10:00 PM
ciao for now, folks. I'm hungry

@Poke Bye!

For any spaceflight fans: youtube.com/watch?v=8fZajPX6qm4&t=1h53m

@SEJPM If you didn't get any votes, that doesn't signal that the challenge is ready.

@feersum so it should just stay there indefinitely?

10:04 PM
Hmm, you said no activity but there are several comments on it.

@flawr cool

I want to find a more up to date version of this table: programmers.stackexchange.com/a/301540/189306
But I can't :(

@feersum you're looking at the CNF one, this one isn't yet past the minimal 24h wait time and I've already fixed the input format as suggested in the comments
the TEA one however got nothing at all (no comments / no votes) for more than 24h (which is why I'm thinking about posting it on main)

Keep waiting then.

until something happens or it wanders onto page 100 of the sandbox? ;)

10:07 PM
Yeah, page 100 or 10 years should be good.

ok, I'll extend to one week for now then and see if anything changes ;)

Q: What can be done about code golf challenges that encourage writing malicious code?

narawagames Related question, featuring a malicious Stack App): http://stackapps.com/questions/6944/the-serial-downvoters-app-suite What can we do about code golf challenges that encourage participants to write malicious code, like virus-coding challenges, hacking-related puzzles, etc?

oh, that dude

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ \o/ good luck

thanks. it'll probably look like moderate chicken scratch but eh :P

10:16 PM
just so there is no confusion
you guys know what a pupper is right?

Of course. It's a baby dog

@Quill noo

it's a tiny doggo
and just to be clear, a doggo is a big ol' pupper

woah you're blowing my mind here @orlp

I'm disappointed in you guys. I left for 32 hours and only 2390 new messages in here.

HAI BIGTOES

@Bigtoes Half are just a pop-con debate -_-

I suppose that isn't much of a surprise.

10:26 PM
@Bigtoes stealing your icon... that's no good

I know, right? And mine is a totally original, clearly not stolen icon at that.

and his is all pixelated

@flawr make it 13187 rep

Hmm. I just got a gold [android] badge on SO. I haven't answered an android question there in over two years. It's nice to see that all those little +10s that come dribbling in eventually add up.

10:29 PM
@VTCAKAVSMoACE oh god

@Upgoat Those are usually popular because they're extremely easy, so shutting out all newcomers is really counter-productive. For example, the primality catalog got a stellar Hexagony answer from a 1 rep user. I'd rather deal with a few sub-par answers than shutting out newcomers altogether.

@Upgoat #should've-one-boxed-it

^

@Bigtoes he's pressing your button(s)
nevermind

10:35 PM
@Dennis +1, new users posting awesome content is amazing

@Dennis I very much agree with you but they are still cases where questions should be protected imo.
@Quill did you finish your SE-node-chat-API yet? :3

@Quill what is this API the goat talks about?

kinda... It's a little borked at the moment
I'm working on a project that's basically a native chat app for SE
and the code that works for the Terminal, my bots and my chat modules is in there

@Quill ah, ok

10:38 PM
but it doesn't work for my native project.... I have no idea why

I wanna run Chatgoat from node idk how to do that
halp, how to cast in cheddar without infinite loop >_>

@Quill halp, do you know how to create a property that isn't inherited?

You can pin repositories to the top of your GitHub profile now!

@Quill : |
@Quill brb pinning my cheese

10:40 PM
@Upgoat I said rarely not never.

May 13 at 19:03, by Geobits
I generally refuse any request that starts with "halp" either way, so even if I did want to...
Mar 5 at 7:06, by Egobits
halp i try drink for eight beer no drunk. how drunk beer?
@Quill my comma usage is great though

Yep. It appears the only time I say 'halp' is when I'm mocking it. Go figure.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ there's a few web methods that SE chat use to authenticate yourself, I basically just call those

o
@Upgoat 10/10 best name
jk "Set big O" is best

10:43 PM
they use a "fkey", which is a hidden input element on the page, and then you just post that fkey and the roomid to a method

@Quill seems very complicated. my goat brain cannot comprehend

@Upgoat what do you mean by property?

@Quill e.g. I have a class. I'll name it "A". I want a property on it, for example: A.foo. Now let's say I create another class, B, that extends A (class B extends A) I don't want B to inherit the foo prop

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ TIL what cats sound like

10:46 PM
that not me that durk vadeer

oh ok, TIL durk vadeer ees not cat

that iz cat about durk vadeer

@Geobits You're seriously very funny. — Mego 27 secs ago
:D

o_O somebody actually thinks that?
/s

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ ;__; y u haet goat

10:50 PM
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ There are a few definitions of funny. Not all are nice ;)

> @Upgoat you are the best goat. — Geobits 32 secs ago
@Bigtoes you're so kind :P

Ah, fake quotes. Haven't seen those in a while. Oh, right, there's a reason for that...

@Upgoat If you want to do it yourself, you can basically copy all the code from here, the relevant code is in core.js, the other two are for handling config settings and formatting the incoming events
@Upgoat delete B['foo']

._.

@Upgoat that's is about durk vadeer naut gaot
@Upgoat i had to click that to see
10/10

10:57 PM
oh oaky :D i tot u haet gaot

@Bigtoes does it rhyme with chat fan

@Quill you look so weird with a diamond/blue name
good weird though
Feb 26 at 2:18, by RikerW
You would be a good mod.

give me a number in [0, 65536]

@Quill I think it rhymes more with mooring trap

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ 13462

10:59 PM
@Bigtoes i actually can't figure this one out ._.

@Quill wait wat :|

@Bigtoes oh nvm, i did it!

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ e

@Maltysen :D

@Bigtoes I was mentally pronouncing the "oo" as a long o

11:01 PM
\o/ \o/ \o/ casting in cheddar worked first try!

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ :)

@Maltysen Yea, I couldn't think of a better word for that :/
I guess pouring would work.

@Upgoat that probably means it's doubly broken

@Quill no, it actually isn' \o/ \o/ \/o \/o \o/\ /o\ iu\o/gy brb releasing cheddar v0.1-alpha

@Upgoat Is that anything like casting cement?

11:03 PM
@Bigtoes no

So you're not taking something and shaping it into something else?
Or is it more like casting a fishing pole, or casting a spell?
Maybe casting for a role?

@Upgoat is a film director? TIL

Yea but it's all weird goat stuff.

@Bigtoes ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

yeah, me and my goat herd are making a movie about our journey from farms to making a civilation and manafacturing cheese with hooves

11:07 PM
Cheese with hooves? Eww

> civilation

yeah, evidently they haven't really mastered typing yet

^
@Bigtoes ಠ_ಠ we wash our hooves what do you think, we're filthy creatures?

^ this is me :P

@Upgoat I just don't see why there should be any hooves in my cheese, clean or not. I'll take hoof-free cheese any day.

11:09 PM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ 10/10
@Bigtoes no, it's how we don't have opposable thumbs, only hooves but we can still manafacture cheese. the hooves themsevles aren't in the cheese
pls dont sue us

get your mind out of the gutter

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ my algorithm idea was actually to randomly generate cracks and to draw them on an un-cracked piece of soil

@Upgoat Too late. Lawyer said I have a very good case.

i promis we did not bribe cdc and fda that bad
pls no y u do dis ;_;

@Maltysen sorta my idea, except I'm having trouble with generating cracks. Maybe I should do some research

11:11 PM
I know a guy that can make crack. I don't know about cracks though.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ now, i'm thinking of just doing genetic

@Maltysen I don't know what that means in this context, so that says something :P

@Bigtoes You could say he makes cracks in peoples' sobriety

but idk how to get butteraugli to work in python :/ i guess i'lll just use subprocess.Popen?

In the field of artificial intelligence, a genetic algorithm (GA) is a search heuristic that mimics the process of natural selection. This heuristic (also sometimes called a metaheuristic) is routinely used to generate useful solutions to optimization and search problems. Genetic algorithms belong to the larger class of evolutionary algorithms (EA), which generate solutions to optimization problems using techniques inspired by natural evolution, such as inheritance, mutation, selection and crossover. == Methodology == === Optimization problems === In a genetic algorithm, a population of candidate...

11:13 PM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ well that means that I generate a random image and then i keep on changing it based on its distance from the original

@Maltysen subprocess.check_output is great and does all sorts of things

@quartata i was hoping not to have to call an external program, but that at least seems better than Popen
its even worse cuz i'm passing images

@quartata hey I wrote one of those in JS

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I see you've taken a crack at it
(did someone ninja me to the pun?)

11:15 PM
;_: y dey do dis

About soil and cracks: shadertoy.com/view/4lSXR3 (need fairly good GPU)

@mınxomaτ is that being rendered in-browser? There's no way my shitty cpu can run that at 60fps

Q: Genetic Drift simulator

Quill Genetic drift — along with natural selection, mutation, and migration — is one of the basic mechanisms of evolution. In each generation, some individuals may, just by chance, leave behind a few more descendents (and genes, of course!) than other individuals. The genes of the next generati...

@mınxomaτ My GPU is shit and it's not even breaking a sweat on this

@quartata Yeah, It's pretty Low-Fi

11:18 PM
> need fairly good GPU

I was referring to people with absolute crappy GPUs. Like APUs etc.
Also pretty neat: shadertoy.com/view/MdXGW2

@mınxomaτ O.O

@mınxomaτ Intel Integrated Graphics here

Who else is doing all SVGs these days? Considering dropping our PNG fallbacks to cut bandwidth and complexity across the board.

@mınxomaτ holy smoookkkessss
That's really nice

11:23 PM
@quartata Check out the shadertoy frontpage. However, I really dislike shadertoy. It's impossible to browse. If one shader has an error, the whole tab crashes. I like glslsandbox.com better (from a technical view, they have less good examples).
Here's a nice one: glslsandbox.com/e#32172.0

swift for windows https://swiftforwindows.codeplex.com/
Yay! Swift for Windows

I thoguht swift has been for wiendowd since ipsn osurcing

...

that doesn't automagically make it platform compatible

yeah but it's written in c++
can't you just install C++ on winodws and compile

11:30 PM
29 secs ago, by Quill
that doesn't automagically make it platform compatible

or did they make it playform specific
@Quill well why not?

it's written in Obj-C as well, IIRC

wat really
wat why, who would write anything in that shitty esoteric language

at least its not written in JS

ಠ_ಠ

11:31 PM
@Quill Objective C is actually really cross platform (it just compiles to regular C, really)

JS lang is best lang

It's the standard library that isn't
There exist standard libraries (GNUStep, ObjFW, etc..) that can be used on all platforms though

Obj-C is the stupidest language though (after JS of course).

@feersum ಠ_ಠ JS is not stupid. It's smart enough to know howt o implicitly cast

@feersum Objective-C has a lot of things that no other language has that I really like
Apr 23 at 22:57, by quartata
@interface Interpreter:NSObject

@property NSMutableArray stack;

@end

@interface Interpreter (StackManipulationCommands)

-(id) pop;
-(void) push: (id) obj;
-(void) swap;
-(void) rotate;
-(void) duplicate;

@end

@interface Interpreter (MathCommands)

-(void) add: (double) x to: (double) y;
-(void) subtract: (double) x to: (double) y;
-(void) multiply: (double) x to: (double) y;
-(void) divide: (double) x to: (double) y;

@end

11:32 PM
It's all the verbosity and bloatage of Java with all the low-level unsafeness of C.

@quartata but it's bracket [ ... ] syntax is really confusing and dumb

^^^ categories, let you implement parts of a class separately and just in general organize them nicely
@Upgoat you don't have to use that although personally I like the bracket syntax

idk, ill just stick with using cheddar as my primary programming language
its very fast ignoring the slow JS engine

@feersum I agree on the first part but I haven't found Objective-C to be particularly unsafe

apparently it's not really Obj-C anyway

11:33 PM
@Upgoat hehe
@Quill Those 0.6% are actually probably header files. Github is very bad at identifying Objective C (understandably)

@Quill Swift was bootstrapped O_o

It thinks the Linux kernel has Objective C, lol

must be good to have a project on GitHub that is recognised as a language on GitHub

@quartata What do you mean?

@Upgoat That's the standard library

11:34 PM
@Quill python represent! \o/

> Objective-C++
k
@quartata oh, yeah, probably

@feersum The class Interpreter has two categories, StackManipulationCommands and MathCommands

@Maltysen I know, right? Python is just great

;-; y pyton but no javscript,

These each contain methods and are implemented in the @implementation section separately

11:35 PM
@quartata So it would be like Interpreter implements x, y in Java?

Not only does this allow you to organize certain methods better (imo) but it also lets you have "informal protocols"
where classes don't necessarily have to implement a category

@feersum Implementation and declaration are separate in Objective-C. You can think of the @interface as being like a header file with the prototypes
The @implementation is the main part

@Quill O_o your first language was obj-c??
ouch

@quartata Does each class need its own implementaiton of the interface, or do you mean a feature where there is one implementation shared by all interface users?

11:37 PM
first lang was batch (even worse)
@Upgoat first textbook, not lang

oh ok

@feersum The @interface isn't a Java interface (those are called protocols in Objective C)
@interface and @implementation together form a non-abstract class
@interface is where the prototypes of each method and all that are (and usually goes in a header file)
@implementation is where the methods are implemented

OK, so it's just the equivalent of a C++ class declaration.
In C++ you can implement some methods inside the class declaration and some outside if you want

I know and it drives me nuts
I especially don't like that static fields have to be initialized outside the class declaration

Come to think of it, I haven't seen many Swift challenge answers around, maybe I'll change that ;-)

11:42 PM
I've seen a few. It's surprisingly verbose

@quartata though that's the properties not the language unlike Java

"that's the properties not the language" --a wild public static void main(String[] args) appears--

I would like to see file systems be redesigned by the creators of Java. chmod file.txt group public me public else public

Actually I don't think that would be a bad thing
Judging by how many people just chmod 777 everything I think it's safe to say most people don't understand Unix permissions

it would be annoyingly verbose though
and wasteful of space
