4:00 PM
They say they're the descendants of the people from Rome

Guys
How would I explain generator function or taylor series to the people here?

Generator function: Can stop halfway trough

@Bálint yes, my surname

@LeakyNun Where is "here"?

@El'endiaStarman in a challenge.

4:04 PM
And, since you said "Taylor series", I assume you mean "generator function" in the mathematical sense, right?

also, we're descendants of the people from Dacia, but we mixed with the Romans and some other peoples too

@El'endiaStarman Yes.

What's the gist of the challenge?

@El'endiaStarman Generate the nth term of the GF or the taylor series
haven't decided on which yet
of tangent x

@aditsu The people from Dacia are the people from Rome, Dacia was part of Rome
For about 2 hundred years

4:06 PM
only after they conquered it
and I guess you're talking about the Roman Empire (Rome is just the capital city)
@quartata I want to make a new release, but I want to add a little more stuff first

Yep, I do

@aditsu Wasn't saying it was a bad thing :P Just explaining why the "nightly" build is actually more stable

@aditsu So you're Romanian. I always thought your name (aditsu) sounded Japanese :-)

Be subscribed to chat until 19:30, when I release the zyabinVI new project survey poll ^_^

@LuisMendo I also think it sounds a bit Japanese :)
but it also sounds Romanian

4:15 PM
@aditsu On second thought, maybe it's your avatar that looks Japanese :-)

@Bálint you probably know there's a significant Hungarian minority in Romania; my dad was part of it, so that's where the name comes from

@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 Nice.

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ ;)

Yeah, there's a hungarian minority in almost every neighbouring country

4:19 PM
@HelkaHomba Vitsy is such a good name, isn't it?

@aditsu Is aditsu your real name?
Instead of something like adi<t>u where <t> is with hook?

you mean adițu? that's not my actual name either, but yes, that's how I would write aditsu in Romanian

What's aditsu then?

@LuisMendo No progress so far, unfortunately.

@Dennis Maybe you can help me.

4:23 PM
a diminutive of Adi (which is short for Adrian)

21 mins ago, by Leaky Nun
How would I explain generator function or taylor series to the people here?
@aditsu I see, nice.

kinda like Robert -> Bob -> Bobby

@aditsu I thought it was Robert ==> Rob ==> Robby.

@Dennis Anyway it's quite hot now. Better wait till September maybe

that's also possible
but Bob is more common in my impression, and also it's not an exact prefix (just like Adi)

4:27 PM
@LeakyNun carefully

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ That's helpful, thanks

@LeakyNun I would assume most people here would already know it so a link to a Wikipedia article or a quick summary would be sufficient

Good.
New challenge in 5 minutes.

zyabinVI is going to make a new project, and, for the first time ever, is asking from the general public!
(Aaaaah, so much better.)
Click the blue words to send a suggestion.

4:31 PM
Don't be surprised when the immaturity of this community rears its ugly head.

(Also, the username will also be mentioned in the GitHub repo for the project.)

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Guess what :P

Chat mini-challenge: take a shot every time zyabin mentions zyabinVI
5

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ X(
@quartata I'm not mentioning it so much.

4:33 PM
I don't know about you but I can't drink that much

@quartata I'm dead.
@quartata Oh deer. 3 pages.

Maybe we could ask Mego, I hear he has a higher tolerance

@quartata Mego?

"take a shot" is a different kind of challenge..

4:35 PM
I didn't finish >_>

?

I don't think he has tolerance :P

chat mini challenge: find who has said the word "code" per message the most in TNB

But I think he has tolerance.

and you still haven't won

@Bálint Rather, DQ.

m. ender has 98 page
... "mender" o_O

@Upgoat can you come to the password beta room?
(I'm too small to take a shot.)

@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 Too young?

4:40 PM
@Bálint Yup.

Welcome to the club :P

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DRINKING IS FUN
but I can't drink alcohol yet

Q: Golf the Exponential Generating Function of tangent!

Leaky NunAlmost every function can be expressed as a polynomial with infinite terms. For example, e^x = 1 + x + x^2/2! + x^3/3! + x^4/4! + ... For example, sin(x) = x - x^3/3! + x^5/5! - x^7/7! + ... This is also called the Generating Function of that function. The coefficients of the n-th terms form ...

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ actually it's vastly overrated

@quartata I know.
I take communion :P

4:43 PM
I always assumed they diluted the wine at Communion for minors or something

really wouldn't know though
@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 chat search is very bad

Everyone has said the at least one time in this room.

@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 Very common words are filtered out.

4:45 PM

Got no valid submissions. >_>

@quartata I feel like I've asked this question before, but what's the shortest way in J to get nonoverlapping pairs from a list

There are two respondents.
> You have excluded 2 respondents from reports

Like [a,b,c,d] = [[a,b],[c,d]]?

4:47 PM
>_>

yeah
really, I'm trying to, given f, a b c d => a f b, c f d
I think that can be accomplished with an applied gerund tho
but pairs is better

hmmm

actually it can't be with an applied gerund, because J has no standard op precedence

Seems like dyadic $ might be able to help, lemme try

oh, yeah, that could work

4:54 PM
Oops it thinks #x 2 is # on the list x 2

]$~[%~[:#,~ works for lists of even lengths (2 f list)
wait no

@Upgoat : switch statement, if it doesn't exist

@Bálint what's your proposed syntax?

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Well you just need it in the shape #x 2

4:58 PM
Then you should just be able to unbox it I thought

@Upgoat could you come to the you know what beta room?

switch <condition> {
    <value1>:
         <stuff here>
    <value2>:
         <stuff here>
    <value3>:
         <stuff here>
}
Please no break

@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 i did

Unfortunately I think the shape has to be constant because it keeps throwing errors

@Upgoat You did what?

4:59 PM
@Bálint idk, I don't like that syntax. If i'm going to make switches, i want them to have some cool feautre

let's go to cheddar room

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Good idea.
Ah, wish @wizzwizz4 be here...

@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 I already proposed something for zyabinVI

@Bálint I don't see this finish right now.
Please wait wile I check the finishes.
@Bálint Uhh, I don't see any valid finishes from your name?

@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 I didn't enter the name, because I forgot it,

5:05 PM
@Bálint I thought the question is manditory @_@
instant.ly, the survey builder I used for the poll, disallows editing the survey after someone responded to the survey. :(
@Bálint Then under which name did you submit the survey?

@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 You will know wich is mine, I'm sure

@Bálint My name? @_@
@Bálint?

@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 Maybe it didn't go trough

@Bálint So, your submission was about avocad juic?
We already did the avocad thing in Bash >_>

5:13 PM
@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 ಠ_ಠ avocad meme has been killed by mods
@Poke +1 now i know how to respond to spammers

:D yessss
the api is way more extensive than i'd expect

@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 Aham

@Bálint Ahem, or yes?

yes

Okay.
We already did the avocad thing >_>
@Upgoat I can't delete Code Review. >_>

5:21 PM
?

@Upgoat Your submission was about deleting Code Review.
I can't.

i don't know what you're talking about

someone probably used his name

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ And I know who.

5:24 PM
@Upgoat

I remember how once I wrote a C# program (cont.)
It was ~500 lines long
I compiled it for the first time

@LegionMammal978 Where is the start?

and it had 0 bugs.
@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 Was trying to indicate that the message continues

@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 im very confused right now

So, the zyabinVI new project poll is here.
It ends tomorrow at 19:30 UTC+3, so be fast.

5:32 PM
@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 Are the results being released earlier?

@LegionMammal978 Not.

5:46 PM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ _2 f\ (a,b,c,d)
Oh, actually that will give you (f (a,b)) , (f (c,d))

@Lynn yeah, but I could do (f"1) _2 ]\ list

Or _2 f/\ (a,b,c,d)
Because (f/ (a,b)) is just (a f b).

o.o that's really elegant, thanks

Alternative chat mini-challenge: output Graham's number in the form of 3^3^3^3^... using no more than 1MB memory

('10^'X) should do it in FOG

@BaldBantha while 1:print'10^'

@LegionMammal978 I think this can't even be done for g1, let alone g64.

An infinite string! Thanks, Haskell.

6:17 PM
@Lynn HIGH FIVE, HASKELL FTW!!!

Finally got El Capitan working in VMWare. The memory seems a bit slow...

@mınxomaτ Where is the VMWare workstation/server/player?

Uhm, on my PC.
I tried putting it in the fridge, but that didn't seem to do anything.

6:33 PM

@MartinEnder When did you change your name?
I just noticed

in C# you can have magic getters and setters on a variable. Can you reference that getter as a first class function?

Mr Rated Nine

@NathanMerrill Are member functions even first class in C#?

6:39 PM
hmmm

@MartinEnder Mr End Retina
Marten, I nerd

in Java when you do Class::methodName is that called a first class function?

I don't Java. if you can pass it around like any other object, it's a first class function

@MartinEnder Yeah, lots of great nag a rams: wordsmith.org/anagram/…

@MartinEnder then it is :)

@NathanMerrill java 8?

@dorukayhan Some other memes Dennis thinks they are bad and should retire a few years ago.

I'm not certain if that's the proper vernacular in java 8. It's more just a method reference. The compiler will implicitly wrap it in your functional interface

7:14 PM
@mbomb007 Uh, sorry, only wanted the last one

@NathanMerrill yeah and lambdas are wrapped in interfaces (generally Runnable or Callable<T>)

I don't think they are wrapped
they implement an interface, but I don't think they get wrapped

the only reason i say it like that is because suppose you have a function invoke which is overloaded to accept a Runnable or a Callable
if you run invoke(() -> something()) which one is going to be called?

TIL mended is a shorter version of recommended.

it depends on the return type of something()

7:26 PM
I have a question about git but I have no idea what to search so I'm going to ask here if anyone knows :3 :
So I have master branch:

    y-z

and I have develop branch:

    a-b-c-d-e-y-z

I want the structure to be:

  master:            y-z
  develop: a-b-c-d-e-y-z

where z-y are aligned, but git thinks it's:

  master:  y-z
  develop: a-b-c-d-e-y-z
any idea on how would I do the above?

but at this point implement vs wrapped is mostly semantics

in Haskell, is there a hack I can do to make foldl1 (,) [1..10] typecheck?
not for golfing, just playing with stuff

@Upgoat just for aesthetics?

@Upgoat You can also use the Stack Overflow tag.

@Poke no, git thinks develop is like 225 commits ahead of master which isn't correct. This causes merge conflicts. Somehow "aligning" these would remove the merge conflicts everytime I made a fix

7:29 PM
oh ha

@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 they are over 70,000 questions.... ಠ_ಠ

i thought you had some weird-ass branch names

@Poke this is not funny >:|

@xnor What do you mean by typecheck? (I probably cannot answer anyway=)

@flawr if you try to evaluate it, you get the error Occurs check: cannot construct the infinite type: a0 = (a0, a0)

7:32 PM
PS: I just recently discovered that (,) is a function. But now I am disappointed that (..) is not a function=)

@flawr yeah, enumFromTo isn't very golfy

@Upgoat if they're actually aligned is there a reason why you can't delete the local branch and pull it down again

@Poke what do you mean by that?
local branch = all the branches?

nevermind i understand now
you have additional commits on top of master
disclaimer: i'm no git guru. That being said, this smells like rebase territory

oh god pls no rebase
rebase = evil
i once lost an entire project due to rebase

7:36 PM
@xnor So you'd expect foldl1 (,) [1..10] to return (((((((((1,2),3),4),...) right?

merge = evil

May 19 at 1:52, by Downgoat
oh great, I fucked my entire commit history trying to fix it with rebase ;_;

merge ≠ evil

@flawr yes, and I'm not clear why it can't, since the elements of a tuple can have different types

@xnor The problem is that a function needs to have a constant type. You cannot have different return types for differen argument values.

7:37 PM
merge = essential

ten arm diner

@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 you just kinda contradicted yourself there

E.g. foldl1 (,) [1,2] has the type (Int, Int) but foldl1 (,) [1,2,3] has type ((Int,Int),Int)

@aditsu wut

@flawr ah yes

7:38 PM
it's like a one armed bandit

@xnor And due to currying haskell first considers the function foldl1 (,)
Now I feel pround that I saw something quicker than one of the haskell grand masters here=)

@flawr congrats!
though i learned haskell not long ago just to golf

I still remember that one time xnor posted something like "I didn't know python did that" on one of my answers... Good times :)

I'm at a point where I got used to the basics, but I'm still struggling with the types/monads etc

I'm hyped for the Android N name choosing.

But I agree it is a cool language=)

I'm sure Nougat will win.

i think i'm in the minority of people here that don't actually really code except to golf
so everything you see in my golfs is everything i know

@xnor but your golfs are very good so you must know a lot

@flawr i really liked this explanation of monads etc

7:44 PM
ouch >_>

@xnor I think I'm also one of those. My amount of code on this site is probably way bigger than anything else I ever did.
@xnor Thank you!

maybe i should code a real thing now that it's summer

@Upgoat Someone lost 22.2k rep? Who? Why?

@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 Geobits discovered his answers.

7:46 PM
that's 2/3 of their entire rep

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

SEJPMIt's TEA-time! code-golf cryptography Introduction A while back I stumbled across the tiny encryption algorithm (TEA) and since then I have recommended it whenever special cryptographic security properties were un-needed and a self-implementation was a requirement. Now today, we want to take...

Was just thinking of some kind challenge, where you'd have to write multiple programs of the exact same length that produce all the exact same output. (or same functionality). The more the better and the shorter the better. But it is invalidated if someone can outgolf you.

Serial voting was reversed.

i know

So maybe they had additional accounts that rep-boosted.

Q: I lost 3000+ rep as a reversal

Pilot6It is possible that someone serially upvoted my posts. I can't see it. But the weird thing is that some of my answers were unaccepted. That is a puzzle. What does this mean?

This is my new Android friend Sasha. =)
I made him using the app available from here

@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 >:| why cant i make a goat

@Upgoat It's Androidify, you can't make a goat there.
