I'm curious what SE devs are doing ._. It's not like SE is redesigning the entire network, and they barely respond to any [bugs] or [feature-requests]
wat color should i use for cheddar download page. I was thinking purple but that doesnt go good

Cheddar colored.

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan O_O
WTAF.

@Upgoat docs, developer story, bug maintenance, new tag engine, swapping over DNS and CDN providers

12:10 AM
New tag engine?

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ oh good idea

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan yeah

cool
Can my question be the first with the new tag engine applied?

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ can you give me example hex code

No, Jon skeet's will be.

12:11 AM
@Upgoat #008080
Or #009999
@Upgoat So you are a minor? With parents and shit?

I hope we all have shit.

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ yeah, who doesn't have the latter? >_>

\o/ I just made it to the first page on vi.stackexchange!

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan \o/

12:15 AM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ .....
@Upgoat o_O TIL. I thought you were more like El'endia.

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan halp, I'm in vim and I do db to delete word but then it copied it to clipboard. I don't want that, how do I stop it from copying to the pasteboard ._.

MASSSSJIIIIIKKKK

:nnoremap d "_d

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan what does _ do?

It's the black hole register.
Basically the equivalent of /dev/null on *nix.

12:16 AM
._. wat if i get sucked in

Then you deserve it for messing with powerful forces (vim) beyond what you have the power to contain...

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan And another question:
In normal mode, how do I go to the end of the line? I'm not able to db an entire word without going to end of line. I don't wanna have to do dbx

I'm not sure if I get what you mean. Do you mean how $db leaves one character left over?

like the cursor always stays one away from the actual EOL

:set virtualedit=onemore
Or you could do diw instead of db

12:20 AM
i is insert mode I thought?

Not when an operator (like c, y or d) is pending.

@Upgoat:
> This does not mean you should use Maps everywhere, objects still are used in most cases
From MDN

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ maps should be used as hashmaps though

define hasshmap

objects are cool because they are functions and classes
hashmap = key/val pairs

12:23 AM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ s/s/sh

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan I thought it was %s?

Not for only one line.

ahk

@Upgoat Wait, you're a minor? I did not know that.

^
until 20 min ago
He is very private though.
Idea: Vim Editor Small caps keystroke
for later

12:25 AM
What do you mean?
Keystrokes can't be small or caps.

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan how do I enter normal mode for just one command? I thought it was like ctrl+O or something

Did you try Ctrl+O?

yeah (nvm figured it was ctrl+o)
akward moment when you make facebook button download link rather than download link >_>

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan yes they can
@DrGreenEggsandIronMan transliterate in vim?

12:28 AM
No, small caps are unicode. Unicode keystroke doesn't make any sense.

I'm so confused

> one person died from gunfire in the U.S. every 40 minutes
phew, person not goat

TBF, there are over 300 million people in the US.

12:34 AM
@DrGreenEggsandIronMan The Bass Foundation?
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ how would you run the batch script you made?

@Upgoat install

but how would i get it from http? It's located at cheddar.vihan.org/install/windows/cheddar

are you talkign to me?

yeah
is there like a curl in windows

so how would you do the equivalent of bash <(curl -fsSL cheddar.vihan.org/install/nix/cheddar)?
I have to put the installation code on Cheddar website

I don't know what that does.

it gets the installation script at cheddar.vihan.org/install/nix/cheddar and then runs it

You can't do that with windows
(easily)

:| okay then what should i write for windows instructions

12:41 AM
"Download the script"

:/ okay, should I just make a big button?

that usually works

ok :P

Q: OMG! We're Twinning!

user3502615Introduction We define twin primes as two natural numbers p,p+2 which both are prime. Example: 5 and 7 are twin primes. Let's define the twin number of some set of numbers as the number of twin prime numbers in that set Example: {6,7,11,13,18,29,31} has a twin number 2, since there are two t...

Are there any other operating systems people give a shit about besides Windows, and *nix based ones?

12:52 AM
If you count OS x as *nix based, than no not really.

@Upgoat Does Android count?

android is not *nix based?
it appears to be based of linux form a google serach

Oh, okay, I didn't realize that.
Ummm...Sun Microsystems' OS? (Did I get that right?)
Oh, Solaris is another Unix-based OS.

@Upgoat does the first slide's background change colors?

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ only at the start it will fade in the background

@AlexA. Any progress a week later?

1:21 AM
Nope

Then go poke them. It's ok to be a squeaky wheel when you actually do feel squeaky.

@StackExchange fix your clocks they appear to be borked

pop quiz: without looking it up, what is the precedence of AND, OR, and XOR in C++?
the bitwise operators (&, |, ^)

@HelkaHomba I don't feel squeaky

AND definitely has precedence over OR, but I'm not sure about XOR. Not over AND, that's for sure.

1:29 AM
XOR is in the middle
so, basically correct :)

@AlexA. I'll squeak a little then

Q: When is Programming Puzzles & Code Golf getting community ads?

Helka HombaOver 3 months ago, on Febuary 23, 2016, it was announced that this SE site was graduating. That post said that You will soon be able to select your own community ads. Give me a moment to set these up later this week. The ads were not set up that week and still haven't been. Last week our ...

@HelkaHomba I think you want the support tag, they don't monitor discussions
I think they only look at bug, feature request, and support

Good call, thanks

@HelkaHomba It's 4 (almost 5) months right?

1:41 AM
nearly

nvm i cant count

There's also a tag specifically for community ads

@AlexA. does that apply here?

> When is Programming Puzzles & Code Golf getting community ads?
Yes

g'night guys

1:43 AM
@HelkaHomba say you'll change your name back to Calvin if we get community ads, then the mods will have a reason nagging SE for community ads :P
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ night!

@Maltysen Sorry my bad it doesn't

snafoos?

so, I've got 3 potential operators with no current definition: @, &, and |. Any suggestions on what they should do or how I should give them precedence?

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ good night smallcaps-san

@Bigtoes oops

1:44 AM
Do you think cheddar email should be cheddar@cheddar.vihan.org or cheddar@vihan.org?

second

@Upgoat first. or maybe admin@cheddar.vihan.org

cheddar.admin.vihan@cheddar.the.language.not.the.cheese.vihan.org

@Upgoat wheel.of@cheddar.vihan.org

@Bigtoes -1 not hostile enough to people thinking of the cheese

@Upgoat Why should it be hostile? You named a language after cheese. Any cheese-related mistakes or jokes are solely your fault.

fuckcheese@vihan.org
Is that hostile enough?

not quite

@Bigtoes well it was really alex who suggested the same, and no one else made any other suggestions so I just went with it:
Mar 26 at 22:22, by Alex A.
cheddar

@Bigtoes To be fair, "snafoos" sound cooler than "snafus"

1:49 AM
@Upgoat No passing the blame here. You chose it, so don't blame people for thinking cheese.

@AlexA. you forgot the cheddar part, otherwise people might just think Upgoat doesn't like cheese

@HelkaHomba :P

@Quill fuckcheese@vihan.hatescheese.org

@AlexA. nvm hatescheese.org is available

@Upgoat Please ask someone competent when you name your children
10

1:50 AM
@Upgoat ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@HelkaHomba Oh jeez, ouch

@HelkaHomba I am not @VTCAKAVSMoACE my language is not my child :|

@AlexA. :P I was trying to zing Upgoat but I guess I got you too. Sorry

Unless no one else suggests anything, you should name your kids Pobart and Wackle.

> Some guy suggested I name him Toads McDuffin, and nobody else had any better ideas.

@HelkaHomba :P

1:51 AM
Chat mini-challenge: In the least amount of bytes, output the your suggestion of what you think I should name my language [no answering in Julia >:) ]

null

@HelkaHomba I thought the same thing, like who names their child "Alexa"? weird....

And I don't mean name it null, I mean null output, as in no name.

Name your kid noreply. It'll be impossible for them to ever get a valid email address.

@HelkaHomba okay, I've asked
@Quill Amazon is ಠ_ಠing you right now

1:52 AM
@Alexa what's in the news?

@Upgoat "Goats Galore"

I live in an area with a large native NZ community... one of my sibling's classmates is named "Isis"

@HelkaHomba please provide byte count and answer language, otherwise ill have to flag your answer for deleition.
@Quill like the Egyptian goddess?

Presumably

apparently she gets a lot of shit from teachers

1:56 AM
The acronym is unfortunate. Isis is a pretty name imo

^

As I said yesterday, I have a feeling that's why Obama calls them ISIL and NPR usually calls them "the so-called Islamic State."

saw this today

@AlexA. Yet I bet some nerdy couples name their kid Isildur :P

That's on them though :P

1:58 AM
@Upgoat name your child ecma

Name your child eczema

@Maltysen already taken

Those kids have bigger issues, trying to defeat Sauron.

@Upgoat I doubt it; probably some word in a native language

@AlexA. ...

1:59 AM
@Maltysen It's like ecma but it looks fancier, until you think about it

@AlexA. but its a skin disease (that I had as a child)

@AlexA. it's also a skin condition...

ex-zima?

@Maltysen @Quill I know, it's a joke

@AlexA. it looks like the name of a ski— oh it is ._.

2:03 AM
Wait, isn't that also a skin disease?

Wait, isn't that also the name of a Beatles member?

Yeah, Paul McEczema

No, that's Ringo-worm

@Upgoat does babel work as a name?

@Maltysen Oh, that works in basically every language.

2:06 AM
@Maltysen eh :/ it's an okay name

@Upgoat can i have your cheddar website? I need to steal its bg pattern

@Maltysen cheddar.vihan.org - go ahead

its a really nice pattern

> Changes are that you are on a *nix system and you don't know it.
I think you mean Chances

@Upgoat that's just from Subtle Patterns

2:10 AM
@Quill idk what you're talking aobut
@Bigtoes et cetera, et certera...

> Cheddar inherits traits from many language
Should probably be plural

@Quill wut, that dude copied my pattern :P D:

and then time travelled back to 2014 to share it?

@Quill yea ;_;
yeah, remember I'm time traveling goat?
this is totally me:

2:13 AM
That's a very realistic human costume.

@Bigtoes thanks found it at party city
that's me taking costume off

@Upgoat why don't you have a mouth?

@Maltysen see that white stuff?
those are my teeth
around that is my mouth

but that's the same mouth from the costume
you gave yourself a different nose

oh yeah, my mouth is under the costime
I havent taken the mouth part off yet

2:20 AM
oooh, there's a Schema for a programming language
you can tell google that your website is about a programming langauge @Upgoat :)

like google cared about cheese ;_;

Huh
> Usage: Fewer than 10 domains

if i setup google analylyrlics on cheddar ill probably have 0 views for the next week like blog.vihan.org

anal-lyrics? I don't even wanna know...
3
Probably something by the Butthole Surfers.

@Bigtoes O_o wat

2:24 AM
You don't read the things you type, do you?
I mean, I get that hooves aren't optimal for typing, but proofreading is a thing.

:|
shit too late to edit ;_:

:| x |:

@mod fix pls?
@Bigtoes is this supposed to be some inappropriate joke ಠ_ಠ

If you don't know, I shouldn't tell you.

why does cheddar use #{} for inline string formatting over {}?

2:32 AM
because {} might actually be used within a string, while #{} will in 99.999% of cases will not.

Can someone help me find the first message where graduation was first (non-jokingly) confirmed?
The one where it says how things were somehow delayed

@Upgoat I'd then argue for #{}#
because you could easily put a function call with a lambda

@NathanMerrill That is probably good but it just looks ugly (imo)

oh, I agree
but #{} is still half-ugly

2:35 AM
@NathanMerrill idk ruby uses it
swift uses \() which I think is even worse

is it even possible to do a lambda inside a string?
because there's no way you can escape the }

yeah, I guess

but () is even worse, I agree

"#{ [1,2,3].map(-> (item) {
     item + 1
 }) }"

but how does your parser know to stop at the second }?

2:38 AM
@NathanMerrill same way nested if statements work
once it sees #{ it hands off to the expression parser. The expression parser will keep going as long as it can. Then it jump all whitespace, and ensure the final character is a }. Kind of like:

hmmm...I guess that makes sense
because once you hit the {, you aren't in a string any more

str -> item str
         item
item -> "#{" expr "}"
            any
expr -> .. yeah ...
so expr can match {} itself

are you using # as your escape in strings?
or is that backslash?

No, I'm using \

hmmm, I might consider \{} then

2:42 AM
oh... good idea

@HelkaHomba Are you somehow implying that my foreknowledge was nothing but a joke, instead of prophetic genius?

@Bigtoes All your "knowledge" is a joke

o_o
That cuts deep.

That felt mean. Have a 🍤

Ooooh, an empty box. Just what I always wanted :P

Oh, much better. I went to a seafood place and had crab cakes a couple days ago, but I should've gotten the blackened shrimp.

I went to a seafood place a couple days ago, got lobster bisque, and after letting my wife try it, she canceled her order and got the bisque as well :)

Not sure what's wrong with #{} - isn't that pretty normal syntax?

I've never seen it before
are there other major languages besides ruby?

@NathanMerrill cheddar v0.0.316-alpha :P

2:57 AM
Julia uses $(...), Python's about to use {} but only in f-strings, ... (still searching)

closest i've seen is ${}

f-strings? Fixed strings?
@feersum :D +1 for JavaScript

Format

@NathanMerrill it's called string interpolation

what no
not JavaScript

2:57 AM
Oh got one - CoffeeScript does #{}

@Quill I'm referring to the actual syntax, not the concept

@NathanMerrill oh, okay
most languages have them, but mostly in the more modern versions

looking at this list:
In computer programming, string interpolation (or variable interpolation, variable substitution, or variable expansion) is the process of evaluating a string literal containing one or more placeholders, yielding a result in which the placeholders are replaced with their corresponding values. It is a form of simple template processing or, in formal terms, a form of quasi-quotation (or logic substitution interpretation). String interpolation allows easier and more intuitive string formatting and content-specification compared with string concatenation. String interpolation is common in many programming...
it looks like ${} is the most common

@Quill ?

@NathanMerrill i thought it was #{}
ruby & coffescript
oh ninjad by like 4 hours

What should be in a "Getting Started"?

@Upgoat installing & running & helloworld

3:29 AM
Installing is already covered & running is covered by homepage

Hello
@Upgoat is cheddar finished?

@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 >_> I knew you were going to ask that
Yes, it is
just doing finishing touches rn

\o/ Congratulations @Upgoat for finishing Cheddar!
5

@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 yay! :D

Be seeing you in the zyabinVI beta room this night, k?

3:32 AM
(I'm sorry I didn't leave any cheese for anyone else tho)
is there any language that allows literal newlines in strings?

um wat

@Upgoat yeah, C# has @"" strings

V allows literal newlines in strings.

3:40 AM
@DrGreenEggsandIronMan In i...¿, o...¿ and other insertions, yes.
(¿ is Escape.)

@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 Yes, exactly. That's the only type of strings is has.

What symbol should I use for esc?

two problems with literal newlines in strings: Indentation/leading whitespace, and parsing is harder (which matter to compilers/IDES/syntax highlighers)

3:45 AM
Would it really make parsing much harder?

fundamentally no
but if you can't split up the text into multiple lines
and maybe this is just me
but I feel like syntax highlighters either do it poorly, or they deal with strings slowly

I just found out I have four domains I bought a while ago and forgot about

for example, some_command("str will turn every following line into a string

@Quill :O Which domains? :3

19thbyte.com, 19thbyte.space, quill.tech and lainofthewired.com

3:50 AM
@Quill you should start a blog on quill.tech about how Downgoat's blog is really cool :P

I already have a blog
@Upgoat did you try navigating to quill.tech

oh ._.
im getting error 418
wat is that

<!-- -->
PSA: 19thbyte.com works now :)

@Quill why are you using screenshots of code rather than code >_>

the nice part is that the site has no JavaScript at all besides Google Analytics, sharethis and Disqus

3:57 AM
:D +1 for no jquery
what system you using to make the blog
e.g. wordpress

jekyll

no offense to your current theme but either A) change your background B) get different theme. The background is really distracting
maybe put a transllucent column over it

I need to do some cleanup on it: kill the footer, update the lists

@Upgoat 418 I'm a teapot - RFC 2324 tools.ietf.org/html/rfc2324#section-2.3.2

4:15 AM
@Upgoat I'm still having problems thinking of you as a minor. >_>

4:46 AM
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ is this cheetah?
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ well goats only live till like 20 so if you thought I was like 25 I would probably be too told in goat years to even be programming

@Upgoat Hen can you change your name too?
