@Dennis That’s so pessimistic :D
If I get downvoted for my answer not handling downvotes, that would be so meta.

brb downvoting

Anyway, I am installing jq on Cygwin to make it even shorter.

@Lynn @Geobits I summon thee.

if I'm making a language that just transpiles down to JS, do I execute the transpiled code before I serve the JS?

This sounds like it's right up my alley.

10:08 PM
@Quill Idk how one might serve js

s/serve/print to stdout/

I would print the JS first
and then execute transpiled code. unless if the environment points out where in the transpiled code it errored

I'll probably do regex replaces for the syntax as well

@El'endiaStarman I don't really see a conclusion to that. It need more answers or more discussion on the existing answer to really call it "proper way" — Optimizer 5 mins ago
@Optimizer: 12 votes isn't enough?
Do we need to have a separate meta post specifically about language + library combinations?

what is really stopping me to use some third party library which does network call in 3 bytes?

10:12 PM
@Optimizer nothing.

and even much more shortcuts.

But will that exist? Maybe.

You're using a different "lang" at that point. And besides, the library would have be around before the challenge.

There is still the "exist before posting" rule.

10:13 PM
ninjuic'ed

NINJUIC'ED V2.0
dmanit

ninjuic'ed v3.20

@Optimizer Nothing. Feel free to do so. It's still different from a no-third-party-library answer and is still subject to - what Easterly Irk said - the rule that languages/interpreters must be older than the challenge.

10:13 PM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ :3

I don't understand any of the answers. They all reference themselves by post ID, which I thought was not in the spirit of the challenge.

@El'endiaStarman Also, that is literally for downvotes are for.
Uninteresting answers.

Yay, I have to figure out how to enable the FPU. bleh

Can we add "ninja'd" to the list of banned memes? :P (Maybe a single "ninja'd" is fine, but ninja-chains, not so much.)

How does using the post ID not violate this:

10:14 PM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ oh OP just had a nice golfing suggestion.

> Your program/function may use only its own source as a reference point to its vote count

@El'endiaStarman no.

@Geobits I think without doing that you run into the "This song cannot be played on Geobits' record player" problem.

@El'endiaStarman it doesn't happen often. If one instance annoys you, that says more about you than about the bad habits of the chat.

10:15 PM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Doesn't happen often? I've seen dozens of ninja-chains.

I've only seen 2-3.
But apparently I wasn't counting :P

@FryAmTheEggman I dunno. I thought it was supposed to be some sort of semi-quine(not really). As in looking for its own source in the answers instead of going directly there.

I'd like to ban "something\nD"

I just don't see how any of the existing answers fit the rules.
He even gives a single specific URL you're allowed to go to, which nobody does.

@Geobits Yeah but that means any other post could break your answer, and it's entirely impossible to prevent? Unless some information outside the code is allowed that I don't see.

10:17 PM
however, the OP has pretty much confirmed the validity of the answers by golfing them :P

Maybe the correct solution is closing.

@FryAmTheEggman Well if you're trying to convince me that's a problem, I agree. But the rules as written bar all the answers, so that's also a problem, and a bigger one imo.

Yeah I agree. I'll leave a comment asking to clarify the rules.

I will upvote this comment

Alright, I posted a comment.

10:23 PM
I upvoted this comment.

ooo, nice wording

@aditsu Hey, at least my variation was clever, wasn't it? :P

Uhh, thanks? I guess I should sign up for English.SE ;)

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ It's set to the normal size. (And my screen is 1920x1080)

@El'endiaStarman nope

10:26 PM
:(

@HelkaHomba o_O that's small and big

Is it difficult to see in the videos?

it's really small
much smaller than on my screen when I play.

@Doorknob Are these guidelines meant to be enforceable or just advisory?

quick question: how does one increase RAM on their computer?
(I'm asking for a friend)

10:28 PM
you download it

You plug in more RAM

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Buy more/bigger RAM and replace/add to what you already have in the RAM slots.

> Do at least minimal research before asking questions that aren't directly related to a challenge (Google is your friend).

first you need to identify what you have and number of empty slots

10:29 PM
@xnor They're not meant to be hard and fast rules, but the goal is that they will be enforced to some extent.

@Doorknob how would they be enforced?

@HelkaHomba I know nothing about ram and don't know what's true and what isn't

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Laptop or PC?

@xnor One method: move to Trash.

@Bálint he says laptop

10:31 PM
@HelkaHomba Ah-ha, so he needs to ask a friend a question for a friend!

@El'endiaStarman >_> he tells me now he has no money

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Then there's a high chance you have only 1 RAM slot

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Well, that's a problem.

So, first see, how many RAM you have, then buy a bigger one

@xnor That depends on what feedback we get, the extent to which the guidelines are violated, etc. We still haven't worked out all the details.

10:32 PM
Ram is pretty cheap though. How much is there currently?

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ TL;DG buy RAM -> plug in

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Your own computer will tell you what you have. Crucial will tell you what is compatible with your machine. Amazon and Newegg will sell you the parts.

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Yeah, i got that >_>

no money = no extra ram

Unless your computer doesn't allow new RAM, in which you can't do anything short of desoldering and re-soldering new stuff.
@aditsu what about extra goat?

10:32 PM
Then remove the bottom side of the laptop, remove everything in the way, plug out the RAM, and plug in the new one

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ only a virtual one

Optimally, the RAM should be easily accesible

I don't know about mac-s though

10:33 PM
[18:33:24] c_o_n_o_robrien: yeah, you need money
[18:33:30] Skarian : to download it?
[18:33:32] Skarian : .0.
oh help me

Most laptops have a little panel that comes off with one screw on the bottom. But you can just look in your system properties to see what is currently installed.

You need to buy it in the compuzer shop or online

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I'm not sure there's help for that.

@Geobits yeah :P he's a gamer, not a programmer

@Doorknob in that case, my feedback is that I expect this to do little unless it's backed by the ability to take action (remove conversations, 30-min silences, etc), but perhaps this isn't a good use of mod effort

10:35 PM
just ask him to download more brain, then he'll figure it out

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ How does a gamer not know what/how much ram they have? Don't they brag about specs worse than crossfitters?

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Programmers don't touch the hardware most of the time, gamers does, that's not an excuse

@Bálint that's true

I'm done with my hypercube rendering BTW

@Geobits ... I hadn't thought about that

10:36 PM
pls link teh imagez

I had a coworker (really good programmer) who had no idea how to install an SSD into a computer

It can rotate around 6 planes

what's an ssd

solid state drive iirc

A faster HDD
And more fragile

10:37 PM
what's an hdd

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ ಠ_ಠ srsly?

Your disk space

@aditsu I'm a 15-yo self-taught programmer. Yes, I am serious.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ It's where all your programs are

10:37 PM
I'm a year older than you

Your memory

@Adnan hdd = memory twitch

@Adnan Uhh, no, it's his disk space
Memory =RAM != HDD

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ also, waaaay more expensive than hdd
IIRC ~$/gb

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ ok here's some stuff to read: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_disk_drive en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solid-state_drive

10:38 PM
And dies after x amounts of data changes on it

@Geobits googles twitch, finds purple chatbox thingy

but you could learn to use the google for such questions :p

@aditsu is this homework? :/

But makes loading screens 2x as short

@Bálint That's what I meant

10:39 PM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ wat? you asked, I answered

I'm just kidding ;)
thanks

@Bálint however, they are less fragile than in a physical sense(e.g. dropping, stepping, on)

@Maltysen I usually don't play basketball with my HDD

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ hdd = hard disk drive - a hard drive that has physical discs that rotate and store data like cd's. ssd = solid state drive - a hard drive that has no moving parts and uses flash memory like a usb stick

@HelkaHomba oh, ok

10:41 PM
@Doorknob I think the overall cleaner solution would be to split into a site-related chat and a general chat. The idea that off-topic chatter ceases as soon as someone says something site-related is, IMO, unrealistic, and disruptive even if followed

@Bálint You should. It doesn't bounce as well, but it's much smaller than a regular ball so you can make it through the hoop easier.

@Bálint But laptop soccer is the best

Servers love SSD-s, because they make less vibration
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Start watching linus tech tips on youtube, they usually present these topics very understandably

more importantly, they use less power

@Bálint alright

10:42 PM
@Bálint on a more serious note, toshibas are great if your laptop gets a lot of dropping/banging

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ at 15 I knew all about types of computer components and how to install them

@aditsu How old are you know?

@aditsu do/did you have family members who knew about this stuff?

@Bálint about 2.5 times older :p

@Doorknob Regarding "Consider creating a separate chatroom if a topic appears to be dominating or preventing effective discussion of other, more relevant topics.", I'd argue that by the time someone might notice it, it's already too late, and so that discussion should already have been in another chat room.

10:44 PM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ my brother, to some degree

@aditsu Schools don't teach computer archutecture nowadays

oh, I learned nothing about this from school :p

@Bálint s/arch.+ays/stuff/

Oh ok

@aditsu am 15 now, can confirm uselessness of public schools

10:44 PM
I think it was mostly books at that time, and friends

@Maltysen can also confirm this

@Maltysen and s/public/public and private/

and magazines
nowadays it would be mostly internet

I'm taking a poor excuse for a comp sci class next year. We're going to be using Java, taught by a teacher who knows a little C++. We who are taking it are all going to die in that class.

10:46 PM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ ask your school if you can skip to the apcs class. Most schools let you (not that that's much better)

@Maltysen they won't. it only comes every other year, and it doesn't come the next year. cries

To be honest, computer hardware has been pretty much drop dead simple for some time now. Google your model or motherboard, find compatible parts, plug them into the only place they will fit.

TIL some Java method syntax that I had no clue existed and would've helped me greatly a while back. ಠ_ಠ

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ My school doesn't give computer science anymore, because they think it's useless and not so popular...

@VTCAKAVSMoACE lol

10:48 PM
@VTCAKAVSMoACE What?

@Adnan ... ಠ_ಠ to your school. comp sci is probably the most useful class :P
3

void <T> T methodName(Class<T> type) {}

Oh, generics are fun!

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Yeah, it's weird

@flawr It would've been nice to know a long time ago. .-. I know about generic typing, I just didn't know you could basically extract a type while passing a method.

10:49 PM
@Geobits it used to be simpler though, especially CPUs, now there are zillions of model numbers that you can't compare without looking into detailed specs and benchmarks
plus many different types of RAM

I hate wikipedia articles that decide they like using Times and no line spacing rather than the usual font/formatting.

@aditsu Oh sure, the benchmarks and such are more complicated. I meant the putting-it-together part.

once you have the right parts, it's simple
and it's so good that we got rid of those pesky ribbon cables :)

Amen to that

10:53 PM
@aditsu not in the keyboard
i have broken my keyboard multiple times

@flawr LOL :)
@Maltysen what do you mean? inside the keyboard?

@Maltysen Stop smashing stuff into it

Is there a website, where I can upload javascript files?

@aditsu I mean connecting the keyboard to the laptop

Oh, well laptop keyboards are the suck in general.

10:54 PM
most laptops also require moving the keyboard out of the way before getting to some parts of the motherboard

@Maltysen integrated keyboard? yeah.. I don't usually mess with laptop components

@VTCAKAVSMoACE Oh that's what you mean! Thats really cool=) For some reason I have doubts whether that is actually a good practice.

@Bálint Create a Gist.

@flawr Regardless of whether it's good practice or not, it's good for when you're building objects through JSON.

@mınxomaτ I don't have git on this computer :/

@VTCAKAVSMoACE I'm curious as to whether or not that is good practice

@Bálint Gist have nothing to do with git.

@AlexA. Look, a magpie!
@mınxomaτ Don't you need a git console to upload to gist?

@mınxomaτ well, they can be manipulated through git and are full repos

@Bálint No.

10:57 PM
@Maltysen It is if you're building a language whose sole purpose is completely module based.

@Bálint The point was to show that I had gotten 20k reputation .-.

@AlexA. grats!

hank!

@AlexA. Congratulations :)

@AlexA. Sorry, then "Look, a "2" followed by 4 zeroes"

10:58 PM
@Bálint Go here: gist.github.com and click "New Gist".

@mınxomaτ @Bálint you may or may not want to login first

@AlexA. wow you're way ahead of me

@AlexA. Cool hack bruh. Can you make mine show that too?

@aditsu I remember giving you the upvote that got you 10k. :)

@Maltysen I'm already logged in (for some reason)

10:59 PM
@Geobits Sure, just let me fire up MS Paint for Mac

@AlexA. aww thanks :)
