Oh wait, I missed the bit about it being caused by the heating. Good lord, who has the heater turned up that high?
I thought he just meant lack of A/C.
That's just terrible.

help make rootword generator

no
4

@Geobits You don't know how?

no, I don't want to.
I generally refuse any request that starts with "halp" either way, so even if I did want to...

@Geobits This is the opposite story of The Swamp Cooler

7:04 PM
@Geobits But if the request starts with "help", it is the same case?

I'll leave that as an exercise for the reader.

@Geobits "Halp downvote this post."

Oooooh, the Daily WTF linked me to this game.

@mınxomaτ Ha, reminds me of an issue we had with an altimeter system. Some of the insulation was missing on an air duct above and to the side of it. Plane takes off, turns the A/C on, altimeter stops working some time later. Plane lands, it evaporates and everything is good on the ground. Took forever to find the problem :D

It is available paid (already printed) and free (print yourself). It's very cool.

7:08 PM
@TimmyD You're evil.

:D

@Geobits ACs in Germany's trains always do the exact opposite of what they're supposed to do. The company is seriously using "the AC's broken because it's too hot (30+ °)" as a valid excuse...
every. single. summer.

Saves a bunch of money I bet ;)

They're currently replacing a lot of older trains in my state with completely new ones. They have the same problem. >.>

@zyabin101 It's pretty easy with recursion.

7:13 PM
But they now have in-train NFC payment and wall outlets every fourth seat in the second class.

@mınxomaτ Whoa, fancy.

@mınxomaτ I'm sure trains here are probably the same, but since I don't live in a huge metro area, I don't really know. The US hates trains.

@quartata And GSM+3G amplifiers in certain parts, which is useful, because some areas in Germany have almost no coverage whatsoever.

@Geobits Naw, we like trains, we hate passenger trains.

@Geobits I like trains but the train routes here only really cover the downtown area which isn't very useful for me
They said they'd be expanding the routes almost 10 years ago and there hasn't been any word since so that's great

7:16 PM
@PhiNotPi design question: in my KoTH controller, who "defines" how to serialize data?
is it the game? The player?

@quartata But idk how to do it in Python. I tried once, and just gave up. Help.

@TimmyD Haha, true. There are no problems having to stop traffic for the 200-car slow-as-dirt CSX trains :/

@orlp wuh
Oh hahaha

@quartata Yea, no trains at all here. There's a bus line for downtown, but overall the mass transit here is nonexistent.

7:18 PM
It has to return title case.

@zyabin101 What did you try?

I had also heard that there was a difference in the track gauge between the commercial lines (CSX, BNSF, etc.) and passenger lines (Amtrak, etc.), and ne'er the twain shall meet.

@quartata I tried using both choosing random numbers for both items, and choosing a random item from the lowercase vowels and consonants arrays.

Oh, do you just want to generate one word?
I thought you meant generate all words.

...not what I expected.

7:23 PM
@TimmyD Probably. It'd still be nice though. I understand the arguments against, and in many areas they make sense. I think Florida is densely populated enough to make an east-west corridor up north and a north-south corridor down the length of it.

@quartata Yes.
Take a seed, and seed the random number generator with it.

If the CV pattern is all that matters, this shouldn't be very hard...

@Geobits I'm actually surprised at how much mass transit there is in the Twin Cities area here in Minnesota.

Then generate one random rootword in title case.

Well that's even easier. 50% of the time pick a consonant vowel two consonants and a vowel, other 50% pick two consonants vowel consonant vowel

7:25 PM
@quartata Yes.
form = random.randint(0, 1)

Soo... what's the issue?

@TimmyD I'd have never guessed that. That makes me even more pissed it doesn't exist here :P
Then again, our governor is on a crusade to slowly bankrupt the state, from what I can tell.

Python has random.choice(, by the way.
If that's the problem.

> customers took more than 85.8 million rides on buses and trains operated by Metro Transit in 2015 source
The Twin Cities entire metro area is maybe 2 million

Whoa.
And here I thought public transportation wasn't very popular in the U.S.
Really depends on the area I suppose

7:28 PM
Apparently Minnesota is doing something right.

@quartata Yeah, it does.

s = ""
if form:
    s += random.choice(consonants).upper()
    s += random.choice(vowels)
    s += random.choice(consonants)
    s += random.choice(consonants)
    s += random.choice(vowels)
else: # add other case here
@zyabin101 ^

@Zgarb Good!

@zyabin101 just curious, how old are you?

@orlp Bahaha. That was clever.

7:33 PM
@NathanMerrill what data?

@Fatalize ಠ_ಠ

@QPaysTaxes If it is, it's only because it's the most populous one.
I do think that it is the case that, when it comes to communication between people who know different languages, Deaf people will tend to understand each other better than hearing people due to the iconic nature of sign languages.

@PhiNotPi er, the objects being passed to submissions in other languages

And, what do you mean by the "game" or the "player"?
I assume that the Java class that talks to the other submissions is the one that should serialize data to send to it.

7:42 PM
I'm worried that if I put the "This is how your serialize" code in the Player, it'll slow down the game too much
because I create a new Player every time a new game starts
where the "definition" of serializing really only needs to happen once

@El'endiaStarman You mean google translate is going to have a difficult time recognizing which sign language is being used?

Hmm. Maybe.

That would be quite a challenge I think=)

Yeah. Probably at least a decade before there are any halfway-decent automatic sign language translation programs.

The other way around would be cool as heck too: A humanoid robot translating speech to sign language^^

7:49 PM
Yeah. And that is arguably more necessary, but probably harder so it's being put off more. :P

Let's tell Elon Musk about it.

Elon Musk. I don't like that he took Tesla's name for his company.
Too pretentious I think

@flawr Haha. Sign language translation is a bit too small for him.

@LuisMendo hey, at least he donated $1M or something like that to the cause of turning Tesla's old lab into a museum.

7:53 PM
@LuisMendo Would you prefer Ampère?

@MartinBüttner Oh really? Well, now I have a better opinion of the guy
@flawr Hm not really :-)

@LuisMendo Volt? Farad? Gauss?

Volta*

Taking a famous scientist name for a company doesn't sound right to me

Faraday

7:55 PM
@Fatalize I'm talking about units=)

Pauli
The Pauli effect is a term referring to the apparently mysterious, anecdotal failure of technical equipment in the presence of Austrian theoretical physicist Wolfgang Pauli. The term was coined using his name after numerous instances in which demonstrations involving equipment suffered technical problems only when he was present. The Pauli effect is not to be related with the Pauli exclusion principle, which is a bona fide physical phenomenon named after Pauli. However the Pauli effect was humorously tagged as a second Pauli exclusion principle, according to which a functioning device and Wolfgang...

@LuisMendo I have had the opposite effect on rare occasion.

@El'endiaStarman Huh? That's not an effect, it's a super-power!

I'd rather say the opposite of a super power.

7:57 PM
sub power?

The idea of a car company using someone else's familiy name without any formal connexton to them is a slightly arresting notion
@MartinBüttner ^^^ Exactly!

@LuisMendo Sure, but (at the moment) I think there are worse things you could use this name for than that company.

@El'endiaStarman I get that, too. Working in IT, it's rather frustrating sometimes, because magically it starts working correctly, but I still know the problem is there, just waiting for me to leave again.

@Zgarb Yep, which is great! Lemme explain more what it takes to have decent translation to and from sign languages. I'll be referencing this video. Some issues that I spotted immediately were 1) signs are disjointed; there's little or no flow between them, 2) there's a conspicuous absence of facial expression and body posture, 3) the signing avatar is even worse in these regards, and-

8:08 PM
(El'endia says: ) 4) there are situations where what's being expressed through sign doesn't match up with words. Like, at all.

I'm ಠ_ಠ'ing you because you messed up my message sequence.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Just watch it, I don't know any russion either.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Now I am ಠ_ಠ'ing you because you messed up my message sequence.

bork

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I guess I can't win

@El'endiaStarman Sounds like the first voice synthesizers.

8:11 PM
Right. And how long was it between the start of development and being on market?

@quartata Yes?

No idea.

4017 years IIRC

That part where he repeats signs in slow motion...how do you translate that?

@El'endiaStarman distant echo?

8:15 PM
Nope.

@El'endiaStarman Because everything is art in black and white >.>

Emphasis?

It's not emphasis either.

Like an attitudinal of some sort

@El'endiaStarman maybe repeating for someone hard-hearing?
bwahaha

8:16 PM
@quartata Rude. Say my name, I respond, and then you just ignore me. :-/

@TimmyD ?

@quartata AdmBorkBork is my gamer handle

Is your name "bork"?
ah

So, I regularly respond (IRL, too) to "Bork"

@quartata It's not really an attitudinal. It's an expression of one's perception of time slowing down as he gazes at a beautiful girl.
The guy signing is showing what's happening, and I think that's very difficult to translate into speech or writing.

Oh so that's what you meant by time encoding

That's only one kind of it, though.
You can vary the speed of signs to demonstrate, for example, drawing carefully vs hastily.

Speaking of signing, my girlfriend recently went to see Deaf West's production of Spring Awakening.

As if translating voiced languages was not difficult enough.

8:24 PM
They had each role doubled as a hearing and deaf actor with the deaf actors signing their lines and the hearing actors speaking/singing theirs.
It looked amazing.

@MorganThrapp Yeah, that's normally how Deaf plays are put on for mixed audiences.

@El'endiaStarman Yeah, that makes sense. This was just my first exposure to it and I thought it was really cool.

It was also impressive because this is a musical, so the deaf actors had to learn their choreography without the help of music. Which I can only imagine is incredibly difficult.
They had a cool video showing how the deaf actors took their cues off of the body language of the hearing actors.

Ɑ:

8:28 PM
@MorganThrapp Speaking of which, have you heard of Nyle Dimarco? He's totally deaf, has no cochlear implants or anything, won America's Next Top Model, and now he's in the semi-finals of Dancing with the Stars.

On the onebox image it looks like a line of Star Wars TIE fighters

@flawr What was the time between frames?
0.1 seconds?

I have no idea. Probably something like that.

AHHH found it!
> Double Solar Transit: Planet Mercury & International Space Station
"For a split second during Mercury's 7-hour transit, the ISS raced across the face of the sun over Philadelphia," explains Thierry Legault.
Legault's camera was running during a 0.6-second interval when the International Space Station (ISS) passed by at 17,000 mph!

There are 23.5 images of the ISS across the sun's face. Over a span of 0.6 seconds, that means the camera was running at about 40 frames per second. (23.5/0.6 = 39.166...)

> the sun's face

The sun has limbs too, did you know that?

Perhpas the sun is always poining her rear to earth.

Well, actually, one limb.

8:53 PM
So what limb?

@flawr You mean the sun is mooning the Earth?
4

There should be an auto-ud-translate.
Btw what gener woud you attribute to the sun?
/the moon?
(instinctively?)

Why are we gendering celestial objects

'cause german

because French

8:56 PM
I've always thought of it as the sun being masculine and the moon being feminine.

@Quill high-five-ninjenga

According to Greek mythology, the Sun is "male" and the moon is "female" fwiw
@flawr @Quill touche

@ANerd-I Which is almost certainly why I have that impression.

@ANerd-I The same in french, but the opposite in german

Does that make Sunday male and Monday female?

8:58 PM
In german those are all days which are male.
(same in french)

Ditto to the sun/male moon/female thing, likely also because of Greek mythology.
Have a good weekend, folks!

You too!

@TimmyD Female or male?
=)

What's bugging me now is that I don't remember the Moon goddess in Greek mythology. Helios is the sun.

9:02 PM
Ahhh yes, that's right.

I honestly do not know much about greek mythology.
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I like that name

@flawr yeah, it's a nice name

Potential children's names: Helios, Selene, Terra...

Nah, go with Ares.

@Geobits Ares?

9:03 PM
Mars.
The war god.

Sirius

Siriusly?

"Aphrodite" I know has been used before.
And Venus too, of course.

@flawr That's my dog's name

9:05 PM
@flawr :-D

@ANerd-I What a creative name! :P ;)

Another planet:

@El'endiaStarman Sirius is the "Dog Star"... Get it? :P

Pluto's not a planet anymore. ;_;

Dwarf planets are planets too :(

9:06 PM
Yes it still is and it will always be

@ANerd-I Maybe I should've used the -_- emoji instead...

@El'endiaStarman Do you think pluto cares about what those tiny ants on his big sister discover and redefine etc within the time of about 1/3 of one of his revolutions around the sun?
He was there long before they even existed and will be there long after they are gone. And he always will be a planet, whether those ants think one way bout it or the other. The ants that thought they discovered it 86 years ago are probably dead by now and a lot more will be dead until he only made one single revolution. What should pluto care about this? That is all just in a glimpse of an eye.

@flawr Pluto sounds slightly Lovecraft-esque.

</philosophizing>
@Zgarb Who is lovecraft? Another planet?

Howard Phillips Lovecraft (/ˈlʌvkræft, -ˌkrɑːft/; August 20, 1890 – March 15, 1937) was an American author who achieved posthumous fame through his influential works of horror fiction. Virtually unknown and only published in pulp magazines before he died in poverty, he is now regarded as one of the most significant 20th-century authors in his genre. Lovecraft was born in Providence, Rhode Island, where he spent most of his life. Among his most celebrated tales is "The Call of Cthulhu", canonical to the Cthulhu Mythos. Never able to support himself from earnings as author and editor, Lovecraft saw...

Perhaps because you registered there?

Yea, it's a welcome message.

Or we now have global wiki accounts?

Wow that's really disorienting to have everything to the right

@Phrancis You can click the gear icon at the bottom-right to change the menus to English
@flawr I know, was looking at the translated version
Google translates "article" as "essay" :p

@LegionMammal978 Are you german BTW?

@Bálint No, southern U.S.

@LegionMammal978 It came up as "Google übersetzer" for me.
I'm not german either

9:19 PM
@LegionMammal978 I like the justice tab=)
@Zgarb I intended more like nihilism=)

I like the translation, something became "Almlhozih", but if you hover over it, it displays "Mlhozih"
You guys know the Google closure compiler? Wich supposed to make source codes shorter?

@Bálint Just deleting all the parens?

It deletes spaces, new lines, etc
It just made a 16 KB file out of my 2KB source code

I think google also had something similar for js

I'm talking about that

9:30 PM
Oh I was thinking you were talking about clojure
Would be fun to combine that one with JSFUCK

It kinda makes me sad that jQuery has more stars than Linux on GitHub
Linux isn't even on the first page of most starred repos on Github, it's on page 2

@quartata Not every Linux user looks at it's source code, but most JQuery users do
@Geobits Goats have four legs, so they aren't out of cheese, and because this, the moon isn't either, and without cheese on the moon, the aliens on a far away planet out of kriptonite can fly, and because this, you're one of Obama's shapeshifter alien guards.

Sorry to do this, but goats are made of cheese, which negates most of your argument. Evidence:

@Geobits Xenomorphs don't have a home planet, they can live everywhere, and they adapt to wichever condition they get in

Right, that's what I'm saying. I found here ;)

@Geobits This isn't actually earth, everyone is lying to you.

/ in python 3 always does float division right?

Q: How can I force division to be floating point in Python?

Nathan FellmanI have two integer values a and b, but I need their ratio in floating point. I know that a<b and I want to calculate a/b, so if I use integer division I'll always get 0 with a remainder of a. How can I force c to be a floating point number in Python in the following? c = a / b

Yup
