@RenderSettings I don't see any such case

...Annnnd I'm just blind
>.<

Okay, it was a bad idea.

@KennyLau Sorry late reply. "tinggal" means leave, and "tertinggal" means left behing by accident

@EasterlyIrk in case that wasn't obvious yes

@Sherlock9 I see.

4:06 PM
"matahari terbenam" is "the sun is setting"

@quartata okai

the root word being? @Sherlock9

"benam" where "karena hari panas, kerbau itu berbenam diri dalam lumpur" means "because the day was hot, the cow wallowed in the mud"

@Sherlock9 Any ter + p...?

Other possible meaning are "going inside" or "hiding" or "covering yourself". So the sun "hides", I guess :D

4:09 PM
@Sherlock9 Yep. That confirms ter has no N.

Oh! My friends came up with an Indonesian version of "Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo." with same number of words :D
"Tahu-tahu, tahu tahu tahu tahu tahu tahu"

:p

"Suddenly, tofu that is knowledgeable knows that other knowledgeable tofu also know."
6

Word by word please?
Tahu-tahu = suddenly
tahu tahu = tofu that is knowledgeable
tahu = knows
tahu tahu = other knowledgeable tofu
tahu = knows
is it knowledgeable+tofu or tofu+knowledgeable?

Tahu-tahu -> Suddenly
tahu (yang) tahu -> knowledgeable tofu
tahu (bahwa) -> knows that
tahu tahu (yang lain) -> other knowledgeable tofu
tahu -> knows
@KennyLau Good question. Let me ask

4:14 PM
@Dennis you seem to be having a lot of fun with my challenge :D

6 answers and counting. :)

@Sherlock9 What languages do you speak?

@KennyLau Usually, the adjective follows the noun
Just English, Indonesian and Python

noun + adjective
I see
Then why are you asking?

"mobil hijau" -> car green
@KennyLau Double-checking

4:16 PM
I see

@MartinBüttner This is also the first time I wasn't annoyed by #> behaving differently for non-negative indices and -1. It was actually helpful.

The adjectival form of "tahu" appears to be informal

I see.

That's also something to ask my friends

What does "tahu" mean, in "tahu-tahu"?
(btw this is called "reduplication" in linguistics. I happen to know that it occurs in Indonesian languages a lot)

4:22 PM
Not sure about that
Reduplication is, in fact, quite common in Indonesian and Malay, as well, I believe

well it also happens in other languages

I'd love to hear other examples

From wiki:
- Rhyming reduplication: hokey-pokey, razzle-dazzle, super-duper, boogie-woogie, teenie-weenie, walkie-talkie, hoity-toity, wingding, ragtag, easy-peasy.
- Exact reduplications (baby-talk-like): bye-bye, choo-choo, night-night, no-no, pee-pee, poo-poo. Couscous is not an English example for reduplication, since it is taken from a French word which has a Maghrebi origin. In South African English, 'now-now' means 'immediately' (whereas an ordinary 'now' can also mean 'somewhat later').
- Ablaut reduplications: bric-a-brac, chit-chat, criss-cross, ding-dong, jibber-jabber, kitty-cat, knick-kna
@Sherlock9 I only know anak-anak xd

"main-main" or "bermain-main" -> "to play"
Oh interesting version of nasal in loanwords
"program" becomes "pemrograman"

peN- program -an

4:29 PM
Yep

wait....
@Sherlock9 Is there any word with p in the middle?

paper

Also, "kali" becomes "mengalikan" while "gali" becomes "menggali". "-ng-" "-g-" are different
Hey One
We're discussing Indonesian linguistics

Am I speaking wrong language? I guess I am.

Nah, we're discussing this in English, though

4:32 PM
@Sherlock9 any word with p between two vowels?

"berapa" for several, is one that comes to mind, but I think you want a p at the beginning and in the middle
Hang on

Oh ok
thanks

What name should I use for my AI team?

Phi's Teamo Supreme

hahaha yes

4:36 PM
@PhiNotPi What AI team?

At my university

AI for a specific game?

@PhiNotPi Machine Overlords

@PhiNotPi PPCG Team.

@KennyLau Have a t word
"tetap" to "menetapi"

4:41 PM
?

Algebraic Integers?

@PhiNotPi How About the Pi Crunchers

@Sherlock9 Does "tap" mean anything?

"Tetap" means "continuous" or "set" or a few other things
"menetapi rencana" is to "make plans" and set them down

I see
So I guess the original form is meng- then

4:43 PM
Or "tentu" to "menentui", "not changing" and "investigating"

@Sherlock9 "tetap"... does "tap" mean anything?

Well, "tahu" becomes "mengetahui"
@KennyLau I don't think so, but let me check the dictionary

@Sherlock9 well, then I guess it is meng- (k)e- tahu -i?

Apparently not. "Tap" is another word, but I don't quite understand it in the dictionary
@KennyLau Yes, actually

@PhiNotPi Alpha Inductors?

4:46 PM
@Sherlock9 Is it e- or ke-?

Alright, it's 11.45 and I'm still sick
ke-

I see

and the k is N'ed
So I'll be getting some rest now. We should continue this discussion soon, Kenny. I'm having a lot of fun :D

what're you guys talking about?

Indonesian linguistics and grammar

4:47 PM
cool

And I haven't even started on how simple pronounciation is. None of this, the spelling is nothing like the pronounciation crap in English. It's pretty phonetic now

@Sherlock9 Me too.

Wasn't always, but it's definitely phonetic (or close to) now :D
Goodnight everyone o/

@Sherlock9 well, English has its spelling for historical reasons...
@Sherlock9 I also should sleep now.

4:59 PM
@flawr some nice pictures in there :)

5:14 PM
I'm writing my AI in Perl.
It's gonna be great.

Ok, fine, it looks like you are more interested in bashing other people than in solving puzzles. This site looked much more fun as a lurker. I'm going back to that. Bye. — Massimo 4 hours ago

This header apparently needs some golfing.
"Pyth, 34 31 29 27 bytes"
Note: struck through 4 is still regular 4 :-(

@quartata I do think 2 retracted upvotes and 10 downvotes is a bit harsh for an otherwise nice challenge, just because the input format is too restrictive.

@Dennis I agree.

Since things to avoid when writing challenges is a thing, first challenges of new users get flooded with downvotes if they don't adhere to it.

5:24 PM
I honestly hope that meta post isn't the reason why this keeps happening.
New users don't browse meta, you can't possibly expect them to know
I wish we could just suggest "don't use tough input formats in your next challenge" and just let it slide...

I'm pretty sure it is.

I added my first AutoReviewComment from my own!

Q: Find the area of a polygon

soktinpkGiven consecutive side lengths s1, s2, s3... s_n of an n-gon inscribed in a circle, find its area. You may assume that such a polygon exists and is unique. Built-ins that specifically solves this challenge are banned, but if it solves most of this challenge (but not all), it is fine. For example,...

The Wiki-Link Game is designed to waste time - to fill those idle moments when you can't think of another article that needs writing, can't find a stub that you would like to expand, and it's too soon to make another cup of coffee. If you are lucky it might also provide an interesting random walk and lead to fresh corners of Wikipedia that you had never thought of exploring. === Wiki-Link Rules === Pick a whole number between 1 and ... well, anything you like really, but something less than 10 and more than 3 is likely to give best results. If this is your first time playing, try picking the number...
So, the premise is: you click Random article on the left, then read and follow random links. It's enjoyable.
@QPaysTaxes ಠ_ಠ to those who did.

regarding the newest cyclic n-gon question on the site
I don't think it can be solved algebraically?
I did some searching for formulas, and it seems that our formulas we know stop at like n = 7

Well, the fact that it's inscribed in a circle is a huge help. You can use two consecutive lengths to calculate the center, and then from there calculate the area that's covered by the two triangles involved. Just work your way around the circle, sum up all the triangles, and divide by two to get the final answer.

> You can use two consecutive lengths to calculate the center
you can't
two consecutive lengths do not define the circumscribed circle, without knowing the angle at which those two length lie

...oh right. Drat.

@Downgoat Of oouree, do tt!
(Of course, do it!)

in the examples section you could clarify again that each line should appear with the same probability (except the first one)
also, the lists should be complete
like:

fo
ffoo

yeah it looks like he forgot about character deletion on the first example

"The input will only contain (printable) ASCII characters for simplicity. Newlines may exist and should be treated as any other character." Newlines aren't printable ASCII.
also you've written the part about printable ASCII twice
and I'm not sure what the "what" is doing in the first sentence :)

@MartinBüttner okay, I've added that
@MartinBüttner oh :|

@Downgoat does requiring it to work with all of ASCII (including unprintables) add anything? wouldn't letters be enough?

@MartinBüttner yeah, but I don't see how it really matters, as I doubt any solution would actually only work with letters

that just depends on how compact the notation for markov chains in the language is

@Downgoat some languages might have an easier time reading printable characters, might not be able to deal with null-bytes, or can only read lines at a time. also, some people might want to use unused characters as some sort of marker in the string or whatever, but the first thing is the bigger issue.

@MartinBüttner lol
Where is Easterly Irk?

is the title "Un-Spelll Chek a Wurd" clear?

@Downgoat The title "Un-spell check a word" is clear.

@Downgoat "First line is input, following lines are possible outputs (all outputs have the same probability)" this is a bit ambiguous now, since the first output (unchanged) should have a higher probability. your statement would be technically correct if you said "all lines have the same probability" but that could be confusing. maybe just say "all outputs except the unchanged one have the same probability"?

6:50 PM
Hey, it's basically the same!

@Downgoat I preferred the original title.
Or "Randomly misspell a word"

@MartinBüttner doesn't the unchanged output have the same probability?
oh

is there a way to get a random element of a set in pyth and modify it

@poi830 O

that takes a random element

yeah, then you can modify it

but if you for example try =hOJ

^^^

"Curiosity killed the cat" is a proverb used to warn of the dangers of unnecessary investigation or experimentation. A less frequently-seen rejoinder to "curiosity killed the cat" is "but satisfaction brought it back". The original form of the proverb, now little used, was "Care killed the cat". In this instance, "care" was defined as "worry" or "sorrow." == Origin == The earliest printed reference to the original proverb is attributed to the British playwright Ben Jonson in his 1598 play, Every Man in His Humour, which was performed first by William Shakespeare. ...Helter skelter, hang sorrow...

Git (/ɡɪt/) is a widely used source code management system for software development. It is a distributed revision control system with an emphasis on speed, data integrity, and support for distributed, non-linear workflows. Git was initially designed and developed in 2005 by Linux kernel developers (including Linus Torvalds) for Linux kernel development. As with most other distributed version control systems, and unlike most client–server systems, every Git working directory is a full-fledged repository with complete history and full version-tracking capabilities, independent of network access or...

This TED Talk was pretty interesting. In essence, the increase in smartness is much like why soldiers have become more precise with their shots: their weaponry has gotten better and more precise.
