12:00 AM
@phase hav u tri thirtee minut?

@Downgoat wat

@phase uh chown?

@AlexA. I got linux
Kubuntu

> Like any good pancake server, you have X-ray pancake vision
wat.

@phase Yeah, chown is a command
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ What are you doing with complex numbers?

12:00 AM
what was the command that gave that error?

@AlexA. something complex
@QPaysTaxes A lexer lexes

Lexes

it loops over the input and lexes

@AlexA. Just learning Julia

it like scans the file
> What does a lexer do?
@QPaysTaxes you could of phrased that better

12:02 AM
@Downgoat It was somewhat obvious from the previous two statements.
@QPaysTaxes I guess that's correct, but it seems weird.
@QPaysTaxes I did. But I didn't really care that much about a code example. I just wanted a visual representation of the field.

@phase sudo chown -R `whoami` /home/phase

Does anyone else here have a problem with checking for SE notifications way too often? If I'm not actively doing anything at the moment, I just have to check at least every 5 minutes. -_-

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ no

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ Not me.

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ I do but usually I'm checking for mod flags.

12:07 AM
^ that I do.

@AlexA. on average how many flags/day would you say PPCG gets

lemme look

I'mma guess about 5-10.

@ChrisJester-Young I know the whole point of Chicken Scheme is that it transpiles to C but how advanced is it as a Scheme flavor?

@phase you might have to change the permissions too. Just owning something doesn't give you permission to read/write it. sudo chmod 777 <path-to-dir> will allow any user to read/write/execute in that directory

12:07 AM
Racket is awesome but it would be nice to compile to an executable

Looks like we've had 76 in the past week, so I guess roughly 10 a day.

How many helpful flags though
That's the real question

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

phase@phase-edge:~/dotfiles$ sudo git commit -S -v
gpg: WARNING: unsafe ownership on configuration file `/home/phase/.gnupg/gpg.conf'
gpg: skipped "phase <jadonflower@gmail.com>": secret key not available
gpg: signing failed: secret key not available
error: gpg failed to sign the data
fatal: failed to write commit object

12:09 AM
Counting helpful flags would take more work.
Also, C.SE gets about twice as many flags as PPCG.

@AlexA. how many of them are for spam/offensive comments that are helpful?

I don't want to go count

@El'endiaStarman is that a good thing or a bad thing
@AlexA. tell SE to give me a diamond and I'll do it :P

hah

@Downgoat Eh, neither, I think.

12:11 AM
@phase Don't sudo git commit, also did you run the chown thing I said earlier?

Also, I actually suspect there are more flags cast that are handled by the community via review queues.

sudo chown -R `whoami` /home/phase

@phase that happened to me once I think
try deleting the git file
and recloning from http

@phase lel is that actually your last name? I thought the o and l were swapped.

@Downgoat It's a repo I just created
@AlexA. You're correct, I just wanted a fun email :3

12:13 AM
haha

without the sudo works now but the gpg key isn't
yasss id ididid it
github isn't working now...
phase@phase-edge:~/dotfiles$ git push -u github.com/phase/dotfiles master
Username for 'https://github.com': phase
Password for 'https://phase@github.com':
remote: Invalid username or password.
fatal: Authentication failed for 'https://github.com/phase/dotfiles/'
How do I login with 2fa?

Set up your local as a remote for the GitHub one
Did you do that?
And setup your Git locally to use the GitHub credentials?

I haven't setup github credentials
Through the command line

You must create a personal access token to use as a password when authenticating to GitHub on the command line using HTTPS URLs.

git config

I setup the email and username

12:20 AM
git config --list
Does everything look right?

I just spent an hour trying to figure out a problem with my google code jam output that looked the same as the test cases, and realised that I spelled something wrong. AGGGG!

gg
That moment when you're about to implement something big in your parser and are stalling to execute it...

wait right now is the qualification round so we can talk about problems right?
@ChrisJester-Young cant get mine to work rn

12:36 AM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ ?

@epicTCK I think folks are discussing in the #gcj2 channel on Freenode

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ execute?

@AlexA. well there isnt much discussing going on right now on IRC so

12:40 AM
Oh didn't know

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ as in have a REPL running before finishing the language?

@MarsUltor no, as in getting the result

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Scared it'll blow up? :P
Or just fail in general.

yeah :P It's already happen twice

Yeah well that's what programs do. :P

I asked a similar question about JS three days ago.

@QPaysTaxes true

I don't think there is
@Downgoat ...

oh
I thought you meant when compared with true

Hey, those of you with significant others (@AlexA., @ChrisJester-Young, @Dennis, uhhh... @Zgarb? @mınxomaτ? @othersWhoApply), my fiancée suggested to me a few months ago that I should write a blog post on something like "what you should know if you're going to marry a programmer". I've been mulling over the idea for some time, and I'm gonna start soliciting input from other programmers. So, if you were to write such a blog post, what would you include?

12:47 AM
If you wrote an interpreter in three minutes you'd basically have pHP

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ no, you'd have brainfuck

JS was written in 10 days
Literally
So, yeah.

@quartata [citation-needed]

12:48 AM
^
Perl was what happened when someone tried to make brainfuck general purpose
2

hahaha
Being made quickly doesn't mean bad. Pretty sure you made your account for PPCG in under 30 minutes

CORRECT!! yeah! does happy dance

Who takes 30 minutes to make an SE account?!

@El'endiaStarman (I'm probably the wrong person to ask about this since I never have written a blog post.) It sounds like she would be a more suitable person to write this, as it isn't directed to programmers, but their partners.

JavaScript (/ˈdʒɑːvəˌskrɪpt/) is a high-level, dynamic, untyped, and interpreted programming language. It has been standardized in the ECMAScript language specification. Alongside HTML and CSS, it is one of the three essential technologies of World Wide Web content production; the majority of websites employ it and it is supported by all modern Web browsers without plug-ins. JavaScript is prototype-based with first-class functions, making it a multi-paradigm language, supporting object-oriented, imperative, and functional programming styles. It has an API for working with text, arrays, dates and...

12:51 AM
> JavaScript was originally developed in 10 days

> JavaScript was originally developed in 10 days in May 1995 by Brendan Eich,

that was like the very original version
it's been in work for like a decade now

The language has not really changed significantly until ES6

Fun fact: Brendan Eich was a co-founder of the Mozilla Foundation

So.. yep.

12:52 AM
> JavaScript was originally developed in 10 days. Since then, considerable effort was spent in making it weirder. In particular, its typecasting is the source of constant headaches and running jokes in programming communities all over the world.
2

@quartata that is not true

@AlexA. Also, I'm currently making Phigs in Java.
A big step down from Perl, I know.

@Downgoat By "changed significantly" I'm referring specifically to the parts that suck
I know there's a lot of minor changes between ECMA versions
Some very good ones
like lexical scoping in functions
But... then there's also the things that never changed that really, really should have
@PhiNotPi what
why aren't you making it in Perl
you monster

another js debate/bash? really? this is getting real old

7 mins ago, by Cᴏɴᴏʀ O'Bʀɪᴇɴ
Perl was what happened when someone tried to make brainfuck general purpose
Ahem.

12:56 AM
Perl bashing doesn't happen as often

That's false

@El'endiaStarman I don't really have any frame of reference so I don't know how it would be different from marrying anybody else, programmer or not.

Oh, come on! People were bashing Perl before there even was a JavaScript.

not in here :P

12:57 AM
Every time someone mentions a gripe about JS it seems like someone has to take a stab at some other language (usually Perl)

@quartata ¯\(°_o)/¯

Why can't we all just get along lol

@Dennis Perl is the original garbage language

@quartata I'm down for that.

Perl > PHP

12:57 AM
@PhiNotPi Nice! :D

@MarsUltor There's really nobody here to argue with that.

@MarsUltor Actual feces are better than PHP.
9

e.g. JavaScript

@MarsUltor Most everything satisfies the left hand of that inequality

I think the one thing Perl and JS both have in common is that they're both so misunderstood

12:58 AM
But apparently the newest version of PHP is a lot better because they finally have OOP

@PhiNotPi uh I will I love PHP

But

@Dennis PHP is Pretty Horrible Poop.

Q: Find the program that prints this integer sequence (Cops' thread)

Kenny LauThis is the cops' thread. The robbers' thread goes here. The last cops-and-robbers thread was already 4 months ago. The cop's task The cop's task is to write a program/function that takes a positive (or non-negative) integer and outputs/returns another number (not necessarily integer). The co...

You're using PHP wrong if you need OOP

12:59 AM
You're writing PHP wrong if you're writing PHP

I know. node > python server > PHP
