ikr?
2 is weirder.

I just clicked a Straw Poll link and had to check a captcha. Wat.
@MarsUltor Four a's instead of the poll's question and answers. That's very... descriptive.
@Mego Wow, that's a very large cable.

What linux should I use? Ubuntu, arch, or debian?

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Tiny Core. You can have the experience of building your own OS, from a basic template.

If you actually want to use the distro, most definitely not Arch.

@zyabin101 Arch > Tiny Core

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ most use Ubuntu
Almost everyone here with a Linux uses Ubuntu
You can use Ubuntu-based elementary if you want an OS X feel though

I had very bad experiences with Ubuntu, but YMMV.
openSUSE is the best choice IMHO.

2:16 PM
@Dennis very bad experiences?

@MarsUltor You can use Tiny Core without much technical knowledge, but yup, Tiny Core stays tiny by not including tools like a browser or word processor. That's a fascinating installation process.

I've tried only Ubuntu and Mint, and preferred Mint.

Lots of bugs, driver problems, borked installations after system upgrades...

@Dennis Not for me
Except for the weird USB needs internet to connect bug

2:18 PM
Considering my flaky internet connection, that would be reason enough to wipe it.

And the fact my mute LED doesn't work.
@Dennis I don't use USB very often anyway. (Also, I'm pretty sure it's only a problem with my laptop)

I finally ditched Ubuntu after a distro upgrade borked the video drivers required for hardware-accelerated video playback, and I could not get them to work again.

@Geobits Sixteen questions later, the distro choice is undefined. I don't want to amend my choices.

I think I'm going with Mint.

not ubuntu?

2:23 PM
@Dennis On my system, an Ubuntu update broke all sound
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ I think you'll like it

cool
the torrent is going right now

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ not Tiny Core? ;_;

@zyabin101 Not a good idea. It's small, but has bad support, and the small size is only because it comes with hardly anything preinstalled.

;_;

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Do you have dotfiles?

2:28 PM
@zyabin101 no, because i need this to be user-friendly enough for my mom to not prompty brick it as she tries to remove it.
@MarsUltor explain?
I don't think so, but I do have a collection of hidden files with a dot.

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Do you use the terminal often to install stuff?

Do you have aliases set up for your terminal?

@MarsUltor I think he prefers graphical interface over shell and .dotfiles. What do you prefer, @EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ? ;_;

2:30 PM
shell.
graphical ones seem like they are hiding stuff or adding extra work.

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ according to your profile you are 12.5 years old…?

13 actually.

btw, zsh + oh-my-zsh + agnoster theme + any powerline-patched font makes the terminal look really nice. i can show you a screenshot if you want

might have been 12 when I joined.
@MarsUltor sure.
Don't use zsh, but open to change.
@Fatalize yesish. Does it matter other than the SE >13 rule?

Very unfortunate placement.

2:33 PM
need moar terror

how about no.

@Dennis Could you please pull 05AB1E?

people start wasting their time on PPCG younger and younger, that's scary

A large fraction of PPCG users are 15-16 years old

cd
git init .oh-NOOOOOES

2:35 PM
@MarsUltor ooooh
me likee

That shell looks... busy. Maybe it'd be better after getting used to it, but my first impression is not good.

@Fatalize s/wasting/spending/

this warrants a strawpoll I say

I do like the arrows, and the colors are probably configurable.

@Geobits ?
busy?

2:36 PM
@Zgarb how big did you make your mint partition?

@MarsUltor I'm somewhat of a minimalist, that's all. Five colors for that seems a bit much, and I'm not a fan of the background-fill.

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Sorry, I have no idea anymore.

@Geobits Well, you can customize the colors

Just wondering, because I have plenty of space.

2:38 PM
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ As much as you want

making it 100GB.
Because I burn through space on the HD fast.

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ how much is plenty?

Also, anyone have a spare win8.1 product key they don't need anymore?

@Adnan Pulled.

@MarsUltor like 500GB.

2:40 PM
Oh, you're Adnan again!

499.98GB total.
and ^^

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ That's plenty?

I only use 2/5 of the current HD space.
pre-partitioned.

@MarsUltor Here's my current, for reference:
Simple and clean.

^ awful colors

6/10 very Barney

that bg purple burns my eyes

Barney? Ooooh the purple. It's transparent black, I didn't notice what it was on top of when screenshotting.

2:42 PM
take moar pic WITH NO PURPLE

transparent bg? that's even worse!

I like transparent, as long as it's not so transparent I can't easily read it.
Either way, I can't see how anyone would think it's less readable than something with lots of colors and text-background.

Yeah, but transparent enough to have that much purple is a 0/10.

“I like transparent, as long as it's not transparent” — Geobits 2016
4

2:44 PM
@Fatalize Would translucent be accepted by the pedants in the room?

Umm... Yes. Full transparency is bad :P

everybody star @Fatalize's message to put that statement into infamy.

Mine's at like 15%, maybe 20.
Just enough so I can see what's under it without moving/switching the window.
You know who else likes purity....?
Oh crap I Godwin'd.

@_@
weeps and runs away crying

Geobits doesn't trust what's happening behind his terminal. Maybe windows are alive when you don't look at them, like Toy Story but for windows

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Everyone uses Linux ;_;

2:49 PM
I use mac currently.

@Fatalize Trust, but verify ;)

I use agnoster because I think text background > $ and > everywhere. And it clearly indicates each section (and git status as well) by color

@zyabin101 I use Windows

@Fatalize Finally, someone safe is here! \o/

I currently use mac.

2:51 PM
@zyabin101 I use Windows.

@El'endiaStarman \o/

Actually, I think the majority of users in here use Windows.

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ self-ninja'd

I also use Linux. :P

2:52 PM
Which flavor?

@El'endiaStarman At all or as primary OS?

ohai @CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ The best thing about oh-my-zsh is the configurable included plugins

2:52 PM
oooh
spiffy

even if you don't change the theme, i have short package manager and git aliases enabled

DON"T KILL THE INNOCENT DOTS!!!

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ That's pretty hard to get. Most distros customize the kernel.

2:53 PM
@Dennis is there chocolate?

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ you're missing a v in your Whateer' first line

> Whateer sanity you hade

@Dennis Thanks!

@Fatalize No, that's on purpose.

2:53 PM
Haha, yes I changed my name back again :p

@TimmyD \o/

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ WHY ARE YOU SCREAMING?

BECAUSE DOTS MUST LIVE!!!

@Adnan there was dood impersonating you he was "a and n" no way he made the aussi language

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ how does .kill() decide to go into string vs eval mode?

2:54 PM
@Dennis BECAUSE HE DISLIKES THE NAME .KILL!

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ 2/10 90% of the words are spelt currectly

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ String mode first, then eval mode.
@MarsUltor fien

Merci :)
@MarsUltor Yes, that was the intended version

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ If I dual-booted this computer, Ubuntu. The shared hosting server that I use and ssh into is CentOS 6.

can totally imagine @Fatalize with a mustache and puffy hat and crepes

Wtf? Why is Yahoo offering me a toolbar? 1. It's not 1999. 2. Nobody installs them on purpose.

2:57 PM
@Fatalize Are you French?

the sentence still doesn't make sense though
@Adnan yes

Ohh

I'm learning

Je parle français un peu :p
I'm also learning
I tried to say, "the same language as osable?", but that was horribly wrong.

3:00 PM
Le même langage que osable ?

That makes a lot more sense

(langage is used for programming languages among other things, but not for "real" languages that people speak)
Anyway enough with French in here, that's too much culture for this chat room /stereotype

Oh, I didn't know that. I always thought they were the same thing :p.

This chatroom is literally the off-topic one.
The unofficial topic is to be off-topic.

It's always on-topic

3:12 PM
Yeah, because the topic is off-topic.

@Dennis I use the Bing toolbar

@Dennis Because... why are you using Yahoo in the first place?

Excellent point.

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ okay
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ okay

3:19 PM
@Solver It came up in a Google search.
@TimmyD Not sure if more shocked by Bing or toolbar. :P

@Dennis I have no timez for toolbarz

> I just realized you can see murder happening in the background

@Dennis Seriously? I'm like the biggest pro-Microsoft guy in here.

3:22 PM
@TimmyD No. Google go! Windows go! Down with Bing! Down with Yahoo!

@TimmyD I'm close behind :P

@TimmyD Right, forgot to take that into account. Definitely the toolbar then.

I run Windows 8.1 here at work (corporate imaged), Windows 10 at home. I have a Windows Phone. I have a Windows Surface Pro (1st-gen). I primarily use an @outlook.com email address. I primarily game on a Day-One Edition Xbox One console. I use OneDrive for my cloud-based file sharing.
And I golf in PowerShell.

Q: Does it actually make fun using golf-focused languages for golf type questions?

Luis MasuelliI am a programmer, and know many programming languages, as everyone here does. Those languages have a productive purpose, a real-world application. Python and Ruby have a clean syntax and are good for web server applications and simple infrastructure and maintenance scripts. There are many appli...

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ ...
How do you do if statements in oration.....

And Unix in Mac ==> True.

Did you/we seriously forget that?
@zyabin101 no.

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ What is oration?

And AvocadOS is in development.

Linux in Unix && Mac in Unix ==> True

3:36 PM
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Mac is an Unix-based system.

Hello, @PhiNotPi !

@Solver hi

@zyabin101 Linux == Unix ==> False

@Solver good job. Here's your cookie: 🍪

@Solver You missed 419 between 0288 and 716. Ah, you edited before I could say this. :P

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ I DONUT CARROT ALL.

And the next digit is a 5.

@Downgoat My lang is called cookie.

oh, nice

3:40 PM
@El'endiaStarman Thank you! I memorised them in chunks of three, though :P

@Solver It's more impressive if you recite the last 51 digits.
13

@Solver It's better to memorize them in chunks of patterns.

^^^

@El'endiaStarman I memorise 979323 so easily.
Then you have 338 and 327

3:41 PM
For instance, this is how I remember the first 52 digits: 3.14159 26 535 8979 323 846264 338 32795 0288 419 716 93993 75105 ...

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ sorry afk
still afk

Not far enough. :P

@El'endiaStarman I think after that it's 82...
@Dennis needs a zero byte answer

"Mac is Unix-based" is like calling "Windows is OS/2-based" ... superficially technically accurate, but disingenuous

3:43 PM
@Solver 820 97494459 ..., yes

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ go un-afk asap pls.
eh, idc much
do what ya want

what globals should Cheddar have (if any)?

@Downgoat Like, preinitialized?

So I would go 582 974 944 459

3:45 PM
@El'endiaStarman yeah. Like python's global input

that isn't a global
That is a function.

it is a preset function

@Downgoat That's more properly termed a keyword. Or built-in function.

@Downgoat So, maybe the digits of pi?

3:46 PM
It's a function, not a keyword. My mistake.

Pleez?

@Solver okay. I will add that

keyword is like the python2 print. No parends needed.

@Downgoat Yay! While you're at it, add e and factorial.

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Cheddar's print will be a operator not a function

3:47 PM
^^
that is fine.

so you can do (print 2+2)+3

@Solver Yeah but why? If you want to memorize lots of digits, it's better to chunk them in a way that's easier to remember. For instance, 97494459 starts and ends with a 9 and has three 4s in it.

I think I finally understand flex. Now to try and understand bison.

pi, e, __file__
Those are the first 3.

@El'endiaStarman IDK. Though I also sometimes use rhyme.

3:48 PM
__file__ being the filename and maybe path to file.

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ __file__ will be === $0

@Downgoat yay just like Perl

what does python do when __file__ is called in a REPL?

@Downgoat What do you mean?

3:49 PM
It's not defined.

^
@El'endiaStarman open idle, type __file__.

like does it output the path where python was called?

>>> __file__
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module>
NameError: name '__file__' is not defined

oh
okay, Cheddar will do that too then

>>> import os
>>> os.getcwd()
'C:\\WINDOWS\\system32'

3:50 PM
Yeah you're gonna want to delete that
Then Python will work correctly

Eh, I'm lazy. Maybe another time.

>>> import os
>>> os.getcwd()
'/home/dennis'
wat

@Dennis I think you're not running as admin.

What? Surprised?

Oh, that's just the current directory...

3:52 PM
what does os.getcwd do?
should Cheddar have it?

16 secs ago, by Dennis
Oh, that's just the current directory...

>>> import os
>>> os.getcwd()
'C:\\Python27'

Gets the Current Working Directory.

Hilarious.

by the way, @Dennis is there a list of all Jelly builtins?

3:53 PM
Incidentally, cwd is also a bash command, if I recall correctly. pwd definitely is.
