@TimmyD Maybe

how is the question unclear?

The question body says Output a list of as many as you can find in one minute, or your code runs out of resources, whichever comes first., but the OP says You can run it for an hour if you feel like, but it's not necessary. in a comment.
It's either one or the other. It can't be both.

Isn't the winning criterion still code size?

^
He's only interested in the output under a minute.

It is. It's the validity criterion I'm concerned about.

10:03 PM
@ETHproductions No. His one and only hardcoded reply is "Let me check my dictionary" etc when I tell him to update.

I don't know why I tried :(

for the ad thing, we need something instantly recognisable

Recognizable as what?

as a programming puzzle, and also simple enough to be put on a 300x250 ad
i was thinking about putting code on, but it's not very readable/understandable if it's a golfing lang, and too long if it's a normal lang

But programming puzzles isn't really what we do here. We hold programming competitions. There's a difference.

10:08 PM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Arnold C, Hexagony, APL, Snails, BF, Labyrinth?, Retina?, and one I don't recognize at all ([5 8][E C]).

then we need to rename to pccg?

@El'endiaStarman sed is one of them. They are all truth machines.

Q: Should we change our name?

RainboltThis site may have been built primarily on code-golf challenges and puzzles that have no winning criteria, but we have evolved away from that. Our name is outdated, and we should rebrand ourselves. Because the folks in the chat cannot seem to agree on a name, I'm going to post multiple answers a...

@Dennis I mean a question easily recognisable as coming from here
@Dennis if we rename to Code Games, we need more types of puzzles
or at least make more types of puzzles as popular as code golf

We don't. We already have a lot of them.
I mean, more is always better, but it wouldn't be required for a name change.

10:10 PM
@El'endiaStarman Now, to work on your capacitor!
@El'endiaStarman Can the signal merely be an "on" bit?

:( beta sites are broken for me on IE

1. Don't use IE. 2. Why are you using IE?

@El'endiaStarman
uhh nevermind

should i get a portable browser then?

goo.gl/P5PfG7 @El'endiaStarman Accepts a signal from the side adjacent to the live bit; it's period 2, but I think I can change that.
@somebody Anything but IE, Chrome if you must, Firefox is best.

10:18 PM
but should i get portable FF?

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ You have to integrate it into a wire.

Give me an example of a wire?

@Dennis * TryAPL.org

Who said .com? I didn't say .com...
Thanks @Neil!

@Dennis you jumped to most recently active so of course I checked back for an edit

Q: Octal, Decimal, or Hexadecimal?

EridanGiven an input string containing only letters and numbers, write a program or function that prints the possible printable ASCII characters (Hex 20-7E) that correspond with the string's value in bases 8, 10, and 16 (where possible). The characters must be written in increasing order in terms of th...

@El'endiaStarman Could you give me an example of a wire?

@MartinBüttner Is this two challenges, one for each person? Or one challenge for one of them?

10:51 PM
If it's just one then probably yes. But two or more, maybe. @MartinBüttner

@MartinBüttner Also, is this a code golf?

Does hanging count as an "infinite loop"
I created a solution that just waits for a keystroke by the user

Did you disable their keyboard? :3

@LegionMammal978 If the code to this point implies an an actual loop, yes.

However, does "not taking any input" also include "not taking any keystrokes"?
C#'s System.Console.ReadKey ignores STDIN

11:02 PM
@LegionMammal978 Are you talking about the Infinite Loop challenge?

That's what the reference interpreter of the language uses for input
Yes, I'm doing that one

Then no.

No keystrokes?

My Brainfuck answer to that one is +[]. The instruction, alone would not be valid.

True, but that uses STDIN, which is set to EOF by consensus
But what about keystrokes?

11:04 PM
Look at the other answers. The understanding is that you have to implement a loop.

Where in the rules does it state that it needs to loop?
Some answers (such as one of my recent ones) use tail-recursion

@LegionMammal978 You obviously already made up your mind and you're now looking for justification. IMO waiting for keys is not okay.
Recursing is also looping btw. ("In computer programming, a loop is a sequence of instruction s that is continually repeated until a certain condition is reached.")

True, but the language I'm working with is tricky if not impossible to achieve an arbitrary effect at an arbitrary point
Also, what about a program that copies itself, then executes the copy (Core-Wars style)?

No one looks or votes at the answers anyway. Just ask the challenge author for clarification on this (via comment preferably).
@LegionMammal978 That still fits the definition above. It's the same sequence of instructions that get repeated.

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

PhiNotPiThis is not a challange. I am using the sandbox to... sandbox stuff. My Progress I'm not anywhere near the completion of this, but I've got an attack plan. They key word here is "abstraction." If a problem seems to esoteric to solve (as in this whole challenge), just abstract it to he next ...

11:10 PM
What if each program copies the next one further out?
Then it would have different instructions
but still loop

@El'endiaStarman Cool! Thanks.

@LegionMammal978 The same thing happens if you conditionally branch inside a loop. The loop is still a loop. For this specific challenge though, just ask the author.

That font at the bottom kills me.

Okay, what should I change it to?

11:16 PM
I dunno. It's very... formal... for what we do here IMO.

Is that font papyrus

No, Felix Titling.
I would never use Papyrus ಠ_ಠ

k good

I might just not be a fan of mixing two drastically different fonts that close together.

All on one line?
Or on two (the title)

11:18 PM
Everything should be written in LaTeX... Everything

Better?
Consolas/Ubuntu mono

I think you need more space between 'golf' and 'time' also. It looks like one word right now, which I don't like.

@Geobits But the point is that "showtime" is one word

@Calvin'sHobbies Yea... I got that, but I still don't like golftime ;)

11:19 PM
I could hyphenate. Both would be wrong, but less wrong?

cjamtime, pythtime, japttime... none of them really would work.

okay
@Geobits Pythtime sounds kinda nice

>_<

but looks horrid, agreed.
Done in MS paint ^^'

11:22 PM
> Bored at work? Let's go golfing!
^ honesty in advertisement

"go" is a tad misleading.

Yea, a bit. I started with "Let's golf!" but didn't think it sounded good.

Let's golf together. It's all about people.

> Be together. Not the same.
^ totally original >_>

> Pleasantry apart, I have a profound respect for men of science who do possess science, but a profound contempt for men of science who do not

11:28 PM
Cool. I have a box of science still unopened from my last move.

Hmm let's see I think I have some leftover science in my refrigerator

Were we on Imgur, these comments would likely mean something quite different.

11:32 PM
On Imgur, "science" can mean something very, very different. (It started as an euphemism and became a meme in its own right.)
It started with something like "I need the name of this woman for....uh....science."

Why would that change what I said? ‎( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

oh ok I figured it was something vaguely sexual but I wasn't sure. Thanks for permanently tainting the word science for me

@Geobits It'd change how people read it. As did that face. :P
@quartata Luckily for me, "science" only has that alternate meaning on Imgur. :P

Well the quote I posted was from a book written in (checks wikipedia) 1865.

11:35 PM
@El'endiaStarman Until somebody brought it in here anyway....

(Actually, that's a little earlier than I had expected)

@Geobits It only matters if you all start using it.

Is this really necessary?

> BECAUSE TECHNOLOGY

11:36 PM
yes

@Calvin'sHobbies Yes

@El'endiaStarman I DID IT :D

I saw some crazy-ass chairs at auto shows in Tokyo.
And yes, they definitely belonged at auto shows.

goo.gl/rFYmyV Using 2 B13/S and 1 B1/S1

Someday our self driving chairs will transport us around our homes, and our self driving cars will transport us around town...

11:37 PM
Suspicious link is suspicious.

@Geobits Honest it's VoL.

not a rickroll

check it with a url unshortener

Office chairs. Ha!

@El'endiaStarman How do you do the color picker gui in javascript?

11:39 PM
@Calvin'sHobbies That was actually pretty cool. I could see it being very useful.
@SuperJedi224 The input field is type='color'.

Self driving chairs already exist. They're called electric wheel chairs.

I thought most electric wheelchairs were driven by joystick/etc?

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Cool! Next part: make it emit a signal exactly once per on/off.

@El'endiaStarman Thanks

11:40 PM
Isn't that a new HTML 5 thing?

@Quill Hi

@El'endiaStarman So... when it turns on, emit a signal? Also when turned off?

@Geobits I thought there were some self driving ones but what do I know

hey there

11:41 PM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Emits a signal when turned off.

@quartata About as much as me, apparently :D

monking

When will resolutions stop growing? 4k? 8k? 16?

@El'endiaStarman Oh, when turned off.

@Calvin'sHobbies That's...actually a pretty good question.

11:42 PM
@Calvin'sHobbies IIRC 8k is human eye capacity

One answer would be "when we can't see the difference", but I think we've already reached/passed that.

at the point where we can't see better than the screens. that's when we stop

was trying to figure out number prefixes for octal, decimal, and hex of the form '0'+prefix+number to condense some code in Python 3, while octal and hex both had 'o' and 'x' prefixes, there is none for decimal. So I improvised and used '+' :D

@El'endiaStarman our eyes see better than modern screens

@Quill You'd think so, but people like having bigger numbers. So there might still be pressure to continue increasing the resolution.

@Quill Oh, okay. We're getting close, though.

Yeah, we're getting close
Apple's newest high res monitors are amazing

@MartinBüttner I have a 17 byte solution in Retina, assuming it's okay to have each letter on its own line.

Goodbye for now

@El'endiaStarman Strange how most TV stayed at what, like 480p for 50 years?

11:49 PM
Why did that change recently?

these days our cameras do really high res photos and videos, but our monitors and tvs are still only 1080p

@MartinBüttner I also may have witnessed a bug in the Retina interpreter, since sometimes the output is different.

Is that because people don't want high res monitors, or because they're technologically difficult?

@El'endiaStarman idk, I just remember the en.wikipedia.org/wiki/… thing, where we went from 4:3 to 16:9 and better res

11:51 PM
Aaand bingo! @El'endiaStarman goo.gl/w8ls0j
@SuperJedi224 bye

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Awesome!

@El'endiaStarman As for monitors, I guess big ones are much harder on video cards? idk though

Out of curiosity, what did you need it for?

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Not sure if it'll actually be needed yet, but I'm mostly just trying to develop various circuit components.

11:53 PM
@El'endiaStarman Fun! Good luck!

Danke. :)

@MartinBüttner My retina alphabet. Removing the new lines is 2 bytes more. Printing caps, reverse, etc are the same byte count.

@AlexA. For the record, the dough recipe from foodnetwork.com/recipes/bobby-flay/pizza-dough-recipe.html is way better than the one from tasteofhome.com/recipes/homemade-pizza

Sometimes it skips letters in the output (idk why), but re-running the code a few times will eventually display the output correctly.

11:56 PM
@mbomb007 Strange, I get all letters every time.
Maybe you pre-ran the bugs out?

@El'endiaStarman I can't reliably reproduce the bug.
I can post a screenshot if you care.

But it does happen on occasion? Weird.

I just hit a record for most letters skipped:
a
g
j
k
l
m
n
o
p
q
r
s
t
u
v
w
x
y
z

A: Is it 'OK' to use the root user as a normal user?

David RicherbyUsing your computer logged in as root all the time is like always carrying around all your keys, your passport, $5,000 in cash, that piece of paper with all your passwords written on it and the only photo you have of Flopsy, the adorable rabbit whose death broke your seven-year-old heart. Oh, and...

Wow, all the ones after j are fine.

11:59 PM
Maybe the stages aren't guaranteed to be synchronous, idk. Anyways, gtg
