I need to work on my language now.

USE FAX MACHINE

@Calvin'sHobbies The difference punctuation makes. :P

@Geobits ^^

@Geobits There aren't any Fedex Offices nearby?

@Geobits Staples, Office Depot, etc...?

6:00 PM
@RikerW Fax? You mean like those things that are built into printers in any modern setting? Yea...
@quartata I tried the UPS store, but they're "backlogged". Didn't know FedEx did it. I'll try them or El'Endia's suggestions next I ugess.

@Geobits FedEx Office used to be Kinko's. They have tons of printers I'd try there
That's usually where I go if I need color prints

Cool, thanks.

@Calvin'sHobbies I need to change my name now

My dad uses the local Staples to print out ~60 sheets of lyrics for worship at a local homeless ministry.

Surprisingly difficult to get a picture of all new dollar bills.
But I found one!

6:09 PM
@El'endiaStarman I saw one of the new dollar bills a couple weeks ago and thought it was counterfeit for a second

@El'endiaStarman Why does Ben Franklin have a honey pot?

100 is the max?

@Optimizer yes

@Optimizer In common circulation, yes.

@Calvin'sHobbies Pretty sure it's an inkwell

6:10 PM
I think there are 500 and 1000 dollar bills.

Oh cool, I found an old 128MB flash drive in my desk. Perfect for this task.

they are given to whom? and how does one know ig they are real?

@quartata The € is currently changing it's bills, too. You could literally pay with counterfeit and no one would notice, because the new bills are so drastically different and the equipment hasn't been updated yet.

@Optimizer They have watermarks if you hold them up to a light, and probably higher tech stuff now too

The base currency of the United States is the U.S. dollar. It is printed in bills in seven denominations: $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100. Previously there have also been five larger denominations: $500, $1,000, $5,000, and $10,000 were printed for general use (in large transactions), and a $100,000 bill for certain internal transactions. == Overview and history == High-denomination currency (i.e., banknotes with a negotiable face value of $500 or higher) had been used in the United States since the late 18th century. The first $500 note was issued by the Province of North Carolina, authorized...

6:11 PM
@Calvin'sHobbies also the color changing ink on >=$20

@quartata As in you use a marker on them and see if it changes color?
I think it's supposed to go to brown or black?

More colors! =D

@El'endiaStarman No you tilt the bill

Are they polymer, too?

It changes color depending on how the light is hitting it

6:13 PM
Ah, that too. Well, cashiers usually have a marker for the purpose of identifying counterfeit $20+ bills.

@Optimizer there's $1 and $2 as well, but $100 is a fair amount to carry around

> Although they are still technically legal tender in the United States, high-denomination bills were last printed on December 27, 1945, and officially discontinued on July 14, 1969, by the Federal Reserve System, supposedly due to 'lack of use'. The $5,000 and $10,000 effectively disappeared well before then. // The Federal Reserve began taking high-denomination bills out of circulation (destroying bills received by banks) in 1969, after an executive order by President Nixon.

@Calvin'sHobbies Yep, that.

> Thief Buy1get1FREE
What a nice deal. I've always wanted two thieves.

6:15 PM
ahh, the oneboxhorror

Those pens are pretty bogus, all they do is perform an iodine test to tell the starch content.

so are buy one get one free theives

@TimmyD Why is that bogus?

They're also notorious for false-negatives (positives?). This is confusing.

false positive for detecting fake notes
and true negatives
false negative and true positive means the check is fine

6:17 PM
In this case, a color change is a positive.
So the color changing on a legitimate bill would be a false positive.

right
and not changing on fake note is true negative

It provides a pretty big false sense of security.

@Optimizer Hmm, no. It'd be a false negative.

There have been documented instances of cashiers just blindly accepting the pen test without actually looking at the bills themselves.

@El'endiaStarman no

@TimmyD I'm guessing the deterrence may be more valuable.

its like "expected, actual"

@Optimizer Yes? The test ends up negative (no reaction) when it should have been positive, so it's a false negative

@Optimizer If a color change is a positive, no color change is a negative. If a bill is counterfeit, the color should change. When it doesn't, that's a false negative.

6:20 PM
@El'endiaStarman that's so cool!

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Yeah. :D

Hello I have challenge I need help juic an avocado so I need program to tell me how long to juic avocad for Through rigorous scientific experiments on ASCII art avocados such as this one: #...

A true negative would be a legit bill that doesn't change color, as it should.

@El'endiaStarman so by that logic, on a fake note, if color changes, its false positive?

Probably oughta clarify it's ~20 men with 3 (sometimes 4) sheets of lyrics per person.

6:21 PM
I'm starting to sound like a broken record but I'd really like to know if this spec is OK

@Optimizer That's a true positive. It should change, and it did.

@Optimizer No, true positive.

@Roujo No, a true negative inverts the colors of the bill.

Positive/negative refers to the result of the test. True/false refers to whether that was the right result.

@mınxomaτ My head hurts =P

6:22 PM
@Roujo I have a pen for that.

@Roujo by that logic, for a fake note, if color should change and it didnt, it should be "true negative"

@Optimizer @El'endiaStarman outlined the logic just now.

@Calvin'sHobbies I really wonder why amazon oneboxes are a thing

In medical testing, and more generally in binary classification, a false positive is an error in data reporting in which a test result improperly indicates presence of a condition, such as a disease (the result is positive), when in reality it is not, while a false negative is an error in which a test result improperly indicates no presence of a condition (the result is negative), when in reality it is present. These are the two kinds of errors in a binary test (and are contrasted with a correct result, either a true positive or a true negative.) They are also known in medicine as a false positive...
It has nothing to do with the fact that the colors are inverted or not - that's coincidental because it's how the test works

@quartata The better question is: why doesn't github onebox anymore? :( o.c

6:26 PM
The test is a function that returns true/false. In this case, the test is "Is it a fake"

@quartata So others can see what useful items you bought.

"Positive result" means that the test indicates that it's a fake. "Negative result" → test says the note is legit
A positive result on a legit note is wrong, hence a false positive
A negative result on a fake note is wrong, hence a false negative

Well, with a test that has two states - no change and change - the former is negative and the latter is positive.
A pregnancy test is the same way.
Well, no, actually it's not.
Well, the readout isn't, but what it looks for is.

@El'endiaStarman It is however useless for detecting counterfeit bills (but detects counterfeit pregnancies just fine).

As I am not a female, I'm going to research this to make sure I get this right. :P
> Markers that indicate pregnancy are found in urine and blood, and pregnancy tests require sampling one of these substances.
Yep, I remembered right. The absence of these markers is a negative, and the presence is a positive.

6:30 PM
@El'endiaStarman So if you get a Sharpie through IV, you're pregnant?

omg this is so weird I'm getting logged out every ~3 minutes ._.

> What an oddly specific number.

@mınxomaτ It's happened ~16 times.
:P

Speaking of counterfeits, this is one way that image manipulation programs know when you're trying to edit currency:
The EURion constellation (also known as Omron rings or doughnuts) is a pattern of symbols incorporated into a number of banknote designs worldwide since about 1996. It is added to help imaging software detect the presence of a banknote in a digital image. Such software can then block the user from reproducing banknotes to prevent counterfeiting using color photocopiers. Research shows that the EURion constellation is used for color photocopiers but probably not used in computer software. However, there have been reported incidents where Adobe Photoshop doesn't allow the editing of banknotes upon...

@quartata I can't comment :( "Also, which of these are valid?"

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ The third one is not valid because it has 2 pits. The rest are OK, although the first one juices instantly :P
Actually wait
The first one is not valid
It has no pit
So only 2 and 4 are valid

So, the pit must be nonempty?

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ There is no pit in that one.
So it isn't valid.
A pit could be empty, but in this case it's a part of the avocado exterior because they are right next to each other

@El'endiaStarman Yeah, I was pretty excited when I learned about that. I could find it on both old and new Canadian dollar bills that I had, and I had not noticed it before ^^

@quartata So the borders can be arbitrarily thick?

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Yes

The other "two" are invalid.

Still multiple avocados
No invalid input will ever be passed anyways

@RikerW What about it?

How do you tell where the pit is?

6:42 PM
Question: I have a recursive function that does stuff based off of the case values. Is it possible to make it a closed (?) function?

@feersum The pit is any shape of # inside the avocado that doesn't touch all sides of the avocado exterior
Ideally the way to parse this would be to take it row by row

I don't follow
Where is it in @CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ's example?

@feersum I have like ten

probably the last one.

The last one.

but that does touch the edge?

@anOKsquirrel It doesn't touch all the edges

What are the sides of the exterior?

If it touched all the edges it would be part of the avocado exterior

@quartata Ohh.

6:44 PM
@feersum In this particular example?
Or in general?

Yes

Very specific

any example

Hmm

Neither region of spaces borders either the leftmost or rightmost column of #.

6:47 PM
That's not what I meant
OK. The avocado exterior consists of the #s that are the first and last non-whitespace characters
I'm going to change the challenge so that the pit must not touch the exterior

Still, I imagine pit juice would be gross.

OK done.
@feersum is that clearer now?
OK I think it should be all clear now
I edited the post

@quartata Not really

@feersum Look at the post again
> This avocado consists of an exterior of #s (specifically the first and last sequences of #s on each line) and a pit (a shape of #s in the avocado that does not touch the avocado exterior).

By # do yuo mean space?

6:56 PM
? I mean #

Are there always exactly 2 connected regions of spaces?

Yes.

That's not clear from the text.

If we were in a physics class, it would be "Consider a spherical avocado..."

A pit disjoint from the avocado would be considered another avocado
And only one avocado will be passed
I'll make that clear

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Since going from ** to 3 is easy, I assume you're talking about going from 3 to **?

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ It seems like you could just run a tree to find it. Memoize all found, etc.
You could run it in reverse (starting from the target), but you'd need four branches on each step I think, to account for the floor.
I think we have a few similar challenges.
