@ZachGates steveverrill's comment seems a good template for explaining vertical
@ZachGates One other thing occurs to me: It might help to explicitly state which way up the parabola is. For example, Wikipedia shows the curve the other way up to yours. Is it your intention that people can assume the parabola will always be your way up?
A parabola (/pəˈræbələ/; plural parabolas or parabolae, adjective parabolic, from Greek: παραβολή) is a two-dimensional, mirror-symmetrical curve, which is approximately U-shaped when oriented as shown in the diagram below, but which can be in any orientation in its plane. It fits any of several superficially different mathematical descriptions which can all be proved to define curves of exactly the same shape. One description of a parabola involves a point (the focus) and a line (the directrix). The focus does not lie on the directrix. The parabola is the locus of points in that plane that are...

@Cyoce omg how u do that

@phase "that"? you'll have to be more specific ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

@trichoplax My intention was that "up" is increasing z values, and "down" is the opposite.

@ZachGates That covers the input. People may assume different requirements for the output, so I recommend defining how many significant figures are required in the output too

@Cyoce highlight all teh things

4:05 AM
@trichoplax The output is a truth/false value

Can anyone tell where a bug report about Microsoft's C++ implementation can be submitted?

@ZachGates Of course - my apologies. That is perfectly clear in your question I'm just tired...

@trichoplax No problem :P
& ditto

@phase mostly regex

@feersum Are you sure it's a bug and not a deliberate difference? Microsoft doesn't follow the C++ standard.

4:06 AM
Yes.

@Cyoce too much tech 0-0

@phase See the discussion around here.

@feersum you could search there github if it's open source, otherwise just try contacting them from their website

> Microsoft

4:08 AM
@ZachGates That still doesn't cover it.

The C++ compiler/standard library is definitely not open sounce.

@ThomasKwa For output?

What if we're given three irrational-coordinate points, which all lie on the same parabola when unrounded but are rounded to 6 sigfigs?

@feersum best thing you can do is support.microsoft.com/en-us/contactus

@ZachGates I think the same is true of the Wikipedia diagram, but they have a u shape instead of an n shape. Both are valid parabolae, so you'd have to mention if you only want one or the other.

grc
4:09 AM
@feersum btw I think I worked out what was causing it

@grc What is that?

@ThomasKwa Input will only be whole numbers

grc
I think it used a 4096 byte buffer, and lost any newline that fell on the 4096th position (presumably when converting \n to \r\n)
only happens when piping though

@ZachGates Okay, say we get very large whole numbers, which lie on the same parabola but not when rounded to 6 sigfigs.

@ThomasKwa I removed the sigfigs requirement and I'm about to add an upperbound to input
and lowerbound
@trichoplax I believe I've fixed it

4:18 AM
@ZachGates I was just looking: vertex has the maximal z value seems to cover it

Awesome

@ZachGates The only other thing I can think of is people might like a few more test cases - covering some false, some true, and any edge cases you can think of.
Will the parabola ever be degenerate? If not, best to mention that. Otherwise, degenerate test cases will make sure people cover it.
For example, if the point on the parabola is vertically directly below the vertex, so the parabola is of zero width everywhere (a half line).

Oh, will two of the points be the same?

Actually, I'm not sure if that degenerate example I gave is possible for a parabola

@ThomasKwa The third may be the same as one of the others, but the vertex and arbitrary point on the curve will be different.

4:23 AM
@ThomasKwa As long as the two given points are distinct, I don't think it will matter if the point in question coincides with one of them
Ninja'd
@ZachGates Can the parabola be of arbitrary width? Specifically, can it be zero width (a vertical half line) or infinite width (a horizontal line)?

@trichoplax You'll get that particular case when a = infinity (as in, ax^2+bx+c).
Infinite width would be y = 0x^2+0x+c.

@El'endiaStarman Thanks :) I was doubting myself because I couldn't reconcile "all parabolae are similar" with one of them being a line/half line...

@trichoplax "The parabolic curve will continue infinitely by all axes (x, y, z)." How does that sound?

@ZachGates I don't know what it means :)

4:27 AM
Is it to address the width?

Well, by definition, the curve will continue infinitely downward (z axis)
@trichoplax yeah
im confused

@ZachGates That's another thing which makes me wonder if the degenerate case of a vertical half line counts as a parabola - all other parabolae extend infinitely wide if you move infinitely downwards

I'm confused on what width you're talking about

I mean how quickly the curve gets wider as you move downwards
As El'endia Starman mentioned depends on a

It will always be a conventional parabola /:
Infinitely expanding with respect to at least two axes

4:33 AM
So you can just say "the parabola will never be degenerate"
The two cases I mentioned are extremes which wouldn't normally be called parabolae, so excluding them seems fine

@ZachGates Looking good. I can't think of any edge cases now that you've excluded degenerate cases.

I hadn't thought of that in the first place :P

5:02 AM
Boring Perl, 21 (-p flag added): y/([{<>}])/)]}><{[(/

@ZachGates You still need a few more test cases.

@ThomasKwa What kind?

@trichoplax That's not very clearly stated and it's in some run-on sentence.
Parallel to the z-axis would be unambiguous.

@ZachGates Sundry cases, both truthy and falsey.

@feersum @ZachGates for your attention

OK, I did not see that factorial coming.

5:11 AM
It's too expensive and 4->3 is too hard :/

@Sp3000 How does this work?
I don't know CJam.

Few do. It's a very inside joke

Basically, for Dennis' ones it's () -> 1, <> -> 2, [] -> 6, {} -> 6, where the number is what to XOR by
I was just toying with the fact that the offsets are all factorials :P

I guess I'm not going to report this C++ bug because it's too hard to figure out where to report it.

@feersum a bug in g++?

5:15 AM
@Lembik No, Microsoft's one.

ah...

I still can't believe this. A compiler bug in an elemental cat program...

I just found this joke in the comments of a youtube video:

Schrodinger and Heisenberg were speeding down a highway. A police officer pulls them over.
"Do you know how fast you were going?" asks the officer
"No." Heisenberg says, "But I know exactly where I was."
The officer thinks this odd response is grounds for a search, and upon opening the trunk, he finds a dead cat!
"Did you know that there's a dead cat in your trunk?!?!" exclaims the officer
"Well," Schrodinger retorts, "I do now!"

@ZachGates Will the parabola ever lie within a plane parallel to the xz-plane or the yz-plane?
If so, test cases; if not, add it to the question.

What is this parabola question?

5:19 AM
@ThomasKwa Yes, or a plane parallel

@Geobits How much for two?

I can let you have them for free. Because it's you and all. Don't tell the others.

Maybe we can have a grand to identify the poster of every single message.

The lack of timestamps sucks, yes. Blame the terrible inconsistencies of the transcripts for that. They are in chronological order, though.
@ThomasKwa Yea, I figured we could make good use out of a full one for various challenges.
I may take a look at cleaning up the onebox links later. They're pretty ugly right now.

Hm, I wonder if I could use that for Jelly's word frequencies.

6:47 AM
For general purpose word frequencies I'd probably rather use something like the Billion Word Corpus.
But be my guest :P

If the language's purpose is to answer PPCG challenges, it makes sense to use a corpus based on the utterances of the challenge authors.
