@AlexA. Must be even worse on a Mac if someone sends you a Windows dated Excel file

Are dates different on Mac and Windows?
On a Mac, if someone sends me a Microsoft Office anything, I open it in LibreOffice. :P

I thought they were for Excel (not sure if they still are)

Microsoft Office for Mac is quite literally the worse piece of garbage software I've ever used.

I think they used to count from a different start date, so if you switch to raw days you get mismatches

Mac is a good, POSIX-compliant OS. Surely whatever it does with dates is correct and whatever Windows does is wrong.

12:04 AM
@AlexA. I have no argument with that...

:P
One of the easiest ways to get stars in here is to bash Microsoft products. :P
(Seriously, two of my current messages on the starboard are bashing Microsoft, one Windows and one IE.)

Seems Windows Excel counts dates from 1900-01-01 and Mac Excel counts dates from 1904-01-01. (This was still the case in 2013)

@VoteToClose maybe bump-edit this? I kinda need an answer to deliver the bounty to...

@trichoplax Mac Excel is still Microsoft's fault. I blame them for deliberately introducing this incompatibility.
I 100% honestly believe that MS Office for Mac was made deliberately terrible to try to convince Mac users that they should be using Windows instead.

12:10 AM
@AlexA. I live a tough life.... That's why I have a shotgun.

Um what

@RikerW bump

font test for userscript

@AlexA. It seems Mac OS up to version 9 counted the epoch from 1904, Windows counts it from 1900, and POSIX counts it from 1970 (which Max follows from OS X).
There has been a horrible mix of dates for different products though, even within Microsoft...
In the fields of chronology and periodization, an epoch is an instant in time chosen as the origin of a particular era. The "epoch" then serves as a reference point from which time is measured. Time measurement units are counted from the epoch so that the date and time of events can be specified unambiguously. Events taking place before the epoch can be dated by counting negatively from the epoch, though in pragmatic periodization practice, epochs are defined for the past, and another epoch is used to start the next era, therefore serving as the ending of the older preceding era. The whole purpose...

@VoteToClose Thanks. I don't want my first bounty going bye-bye without being awarded.

12:14 AM
@trichoplax Oh, yeah. I don't even consider MacOS when I talk about Mac operating systems. OS X or bust, man.

@AlexA. My favourite subtle difference from that page: MATLAB counts from 0 Jan 1 BC, .NET counts from 1 Jan 1 AD

You can even post your own answer temporarily if you want, I will award the bounty there.

@VoteToClose That was a good read.

@El'endiaStarman 'Twas.
I'm now going to change my ssh port. xD
RIP me.

What I want to know now is why passwords are no longer secure enough for SSH.

12:15 AM
I'm still using crypto-keys, though. \o/

@trichoplax That's just heinous.

Indeed

Q: Why is using SSH key more secure than using passwords?

thequestionthequestionIf people use password to log in to a UNIX server, then it could be forced to expire the password, then they change it. If people use ssh key and have no passwords, no password expirity, then nothing forces them to change their SSH key regurarly. Question: Which solution is more secure? Why d...

@VoteToClose Doesn't quite answer my question.
It's pretty obvious that keys are more secure than passwords.

My RPi has been up for a few days now, and it's already been attempted brute-forced a few times. :P
Thank god for wireshark. xD
But no, they definitely aren't secure enough. With how many people will attack, rsa is supreme.

12:23 AM
Do they realize all they are attacking is a thing that runs python, scratch, and mathematica? :P

@RikerW No - but it's on the network. They'd have internal access, which would allow for attack inside the LAN (which is bad. :P).

True.
Bye to my lan minecraft.
:P

I can't actually get my computer to work with the other one, so I can't host LAN games anyway.

\o/ just dominated a TF2 hacker

12:26 AM
Yay.
Play nethack now.

:)

Maybe if Nethack comes out in 3D.

but don't you dare

12:29 AM
Just a few seconds of this made me die:

Don't worry, we've got your funeral covered.

\o/

@Doorknob From one of the reviews:
> Now I don't have to memorize all the complicated keyboard commands.

ಠ_ಠ

That is one of the best parts of nethack... (the keyboard shortcuts)

12:34 AM
@Doorknob ಠ_ಠ I was just thinking, "Oh maybe I'd actually play Nethack this way."

Dude, the ascii is the best part!

False
I had absolutely no idea what was going on

Plus it saved my ass in class a few times cause a teacher thought it was art.

You should probably pay attention in class. :P

Sex ed. Nuff said.

12:35 AM
@AlexA. It absolutely ruins the aspect of being able to imagine everything instead of graphics forcing you to think of, say, a dragon as looking only a specific way

^

@Doorknob I think I was trying too hard to discern what was happening with the little ASCII things to be able to imagine anything cooler. :P
@RikerW You definitely want to pay attention there.

lol I understand.

Unless they're teaching absintence.
In which case, ಠ_ಠ.

I don't think we have any classes like that at my high school, surprisingly
There was a health class in middle school, but it was an elective and didn't really teach much

12:37 AM
Lucky.

I don't think I had it in high school either.

I have it in high school. ._.

@AlexA. umm, okay?
Not sure how to respond to that.

It's not disapproval for you, but for your school, if they're teaching abstinence instead of safe sex.

I had it in high school. >.> We read a book that had a tree made out of penises in it.
It was dreadful. I hated that class.

12:38 AM
o_O

Um, okay?

I didn't even read the book.

^^^

I just used common sense.

common sense > penis tree
> not ≥

12:39 AM
@AlexA. Isn't high school a little too early for sex? >_>

She counted off points on me on the final exam for not saying that abstinence was a form of contraception.

@AlexA. Okay, that makes sense.
@VoteToClose It isn't?
It is not contraception

@RikerW Technically, no, because there's no... interaction taking place whatsoever.

Oh I know. I was agreeing with you.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ People have sex. They just do. Better to teach them how to not get an unwanted pregnancy or an STI rather than just saying, "Hey don't do it."

12:40 AM
^
But still don't.

@AlexA. How bout say both?

Schools are not cool dude.
They don't really care about what the kids do as long as they can't sue.

@AlexA. In my school, it is commonly accepted that the students engage in illegal sexual activity. So the Health class is taken as a joke, and the kids are all incredibly stupid about this subject.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ If they provide actual education rather than abstinence only, then usually they do say that.
@VoteToClose Illegal?

^

12:43 AM
@AlexA. Age of Consent laws.

Oh, okay.
I was confused about the illegal part.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Year 7 over here, which is ~12-13 years old. Don't know what ages high school are for you though

I don't know what the laws are in the UK, but IIRC in the US it's only illegal if only one party is below the age of consent.

Yeah, and the age is 18.

12:44 AM
Also, like, there are these parties that seniors set up and invite freshmen to to get drunk.

Um, okay?

^

UK = 16+ of both parties.

Okay.

12:44 AM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I know. It's disgusting.

So seniors are okay?

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ In that case, education on the subject happens even earlier over here than you expect :P

@VoteToClose What is the drinking age.

@RikerW Yeah, about halfway through sophmore year.

@Sp3000 liek when babby iz fromed?

12:45 AM
@RikerW 16 with a meal, 18 with an adult over 21, 21 no restrictions.

@VoteToClose Okay.

@Sp3000 Yeah. I had sex ed in fifth grade, which is like age 10.

@VoteToClose Okay.

@AlexA. I read that without the ed in it. #scarred

@Sp3000 isn't it like 4am for you?

12:46 AM
@RikerW 11:46am, not quite :P

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I didn't, and now I feel lucky. Sorry.
@Sp3000 Okay. :P
@VoteToClose time?

@VoteToClose I didn't realize that was in response to drinking so I thought you were saying that it was okay to have sex with a minor if you buy them dinner first.

@VoteToClose In the UK, drinking age is 5 at home (not in a restaurant)

5??????????
5 yrs old??????

@RikerW I know!

12:47 AM
WAT
I knew the brits were evil

NONONONO WAT
WTF?
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ w h ere

@trichoplax This is true. I was listing pub/bar ages.
@AlexA. o-o

@VoteToClose I wasn't sure if you'd be aware...

@RikerW ~1 AM.

@VoteToClose ikr

12:48 AM
Okay.
@trichoplax are you uk?

Yes

@RikerW Yes, he's an island and the northern tip of Ireland.

And so I can get a 2 yr old drunk and not get in trouble?
@VoteToClose he is an island? Cool! I always wanted to be one!!!!!!!!!

@RikerW ...no.

No man is an island
5

12:50 AM
@trichoplax Are you a girl? :o

@AlexA. Yeah, they're a band:

@RikerW Hah, "No man is an island" is a quote from a Donne poem from the 1600s.

I know that too.
Edgar allan poe is better.

@RikerW 1. 2 < 5 and 2. Getting drunk is not acceptable - the law is mainly to allow for a small drink with a meal or religious ceremony (and that's only for the parents to decide - anyone else would be in serious trouble).

Wow, NetHack talk

12:52 AM
Rage, rage against the drinking of of the 5 yr old..

There seems to be a bit of roguelike/codegolf interest overlap

@Lynn Yeah, the only three or four people in the world who play Nethack frequent this room. :P

Those are all just your socks

I’m number four point whatever! Or, I used to be. Don’t play much anymore, it got boring

12:53 AM
s/got/is/

how about this?

@Lynn 3.4.3?
There is no 4.x yet
AFAIS

@RikerW She means that she's Nethack player number 4.x.

I mean, if there are 3 or 4 people in this room who play NetHack, I’m the four-or-fifth

12:54 AM
Okay.

(Also 3.6.0 got released!)

Anybody else?
@Lynn I know, but that has no '4' in it. :P

@Lynn I found your youtube channel by chance while looking up nethack speedruns
assuming there isn't another nethack-playing noodl

Oh, yeah, I uploaded Adeon’s run

@VoteToClose Is that a logical inference from "he is an island" and "No man is an island"?

12:55 AM
Nope, totally me

@RikerW Oh shit, I remember them. It has the guy from Porcupine Tree.

@trichoplax Are you a girl non-male segment of the gender spectrum?
(yes, that is a logical inference. c:)

NetHack 3.4.3 is secretly really easy. NetHack 3.6.0 is... a bit bad
Both versions are unbalanced monstrosities of horrible game design, but at least the former has Elbereth.

@Cyoce I like the earlier one better

@Lynn Elbereth still works I think?
Does it? I haven't tried IDT.
