@Dennis why does it seem like a disproportionate amount of strings end in Aachen?
10 hours ago, by Doorknob
... if we see a brand new 1-rep user post a kolmogorov-complexity challenge to output Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch!, now we'll know why.
I have an Idea! Please wait until @NewSandboxedPosts.
@MartinBüttner I've noticed this too
@FlagAsSpam What difficulty are you running into?
He's running into a Mac ;)
@zyabin101 I take it that means that that word is in Jelly's dictionary
@MartinBüttner Because it's the first word of the long dictionary.
right, but why does that first word get returned more often than anything else?
Because it corresponds to the integer 1. If the penultimate token left a residue of 1, you get Aachen.
Which makes me realize I should probably sort the dictionaries by frequency.
I was just thinking that too.
17:07
> Event handlers should do what they have to do quickly and GTFO as soon as possible. Yours is an old lady doing 40KM/H on a highway, which is illegal.
17:18
are we still talking about @Dennis compressor?
It's like 9 hours later
@Doorknob Jelly isn't that hard.
It's not very different from regular APL/J.
@Maltysen It's a really impressive compressor.
that is true
I think @CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ's Chaine had something similar but he used base 96 for the index
I'd have to ask him
@quartata and I still have no idea how APL/J work
@Doorknob Just read it right to left and remember that functions are infix
Not too tricky
Coding in it is a little harder than reading it though

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

zyabin101Print the largest city name, raw and small tags: code-challenge kolmogorov-complexity The challenge graduates in two weeks. Inspired by this Nineteenth Byte message, your goal is to print Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. You thought it would be easy, but there's ...

Define "compress."
:P
@Dennis Aachoo Aachen!
> The word Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch must be in the code, and it must be at least 58 bytes.
@quartata aal!
@zyabin101 So basically Hello World! but a different string and no compression
Link, if you don't get it: <http://jelly.tryitonline.net/#code=4oCcIcK7>
its basically "who has the shortest print statement"
17:32
126 bytes in Fishing
@quartata the winning submission is then a /// program which simply contains the string

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

Nathan MerrillSimplify a Boolean Expression In this challenge, you need to take a boolean expression, and simplify it as much as possible. A boolean expression is simpler if: It it contains fewer distinct variables. If equal, then If it contains fewer variable occurences. If equal, then If it contains fewe...

@MartinBüttner or a pl solution
Not really a kolmogorov complexity challenge then
if we can't express the string in any different way
> Next up on The Daily PPCG: Is it possible to think of a more boring challenge? – @Doorknob source
The Kolomogorov complexity for the string is lower than 58 for sure (four ls in a row)
17:33
You know comments onebox, right?
"You thought it would be easy, but there's a twist: you cannot compress the string (no offense, Jelly)!"
It's actually easier with compression banned
Winning solution:
pl 58 bytes Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch
that was easy
time to hit the bar
I'd even vouch that that is a valid English program
That too
Mathematica's DictionaryLookup[ would be handy here
Also valid in PHP
Wonder what else
HTML
Yeah
///
hmm

Next up on The Daily PPCG: Is it possible to think of a more boring challenge? — Doorknob ♦ 5 mins ago
@Doorknob Do-nothing
@quartata "Chaine"? I don't know this Chaine. Maybe "Chaîne"
Polyglot 0 bytes
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I'm sorry I didn't type the accent OK
17:38
@quartata Fair enough
:P
XD
@quartata But yeah. Whaddya want to ask me about?
Did you see Dennis's new jelly compressor?
I just wanted to draw your attention to it since IIRC Chaine did something similar
not quite the same
@quartata With the current edit online, this sub is invalid because the challenge requires at least 64 bytes.
Is there a typing speed challenge?
This really makes the challenge interesting!
17:40
@zyabin101 Perl 64 bytes say "Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch"
You were saying
@zyabin101 just add 6 bytes of no-op.
@zyabin101 I was wrong. It was possible to make the challenge even less interesting...
Kolomogorov complexity = shortest way to represent a string
@quartata o_o No, I haven't. Did Dennis really need another way to outgolf us?
17:41
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Yes
@Dennis I don't know why you didn't Huffman code the dictionary in the first place
It's the shortest compressor I've ever seen
@quartata Link me?
@zyabin101 /lol//Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Just scroll up through the transcript
You'll see plenty of talk about it
It's essentially a base-256 dictionary approach
17:42
Oh, I see.
One dictionary for common two-letter words, one dictionary for short words one dictionary for long words and a little something extra for different punctuation/capitalization
It beats shoco by quite a bit
(compresses hello world down to 6 bytes)
Hm... is there is command line client for SE chat?
17:43
@quartata Next up on The Daily PPCG: How high can we make the limit on @zyabin101's challenge?
Fishing, 126 bytes

v+CCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC
`Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch`P
@zyabin101 I don't know but I'll just use LOLCODE if you make it higher
That'll get me the upvotes for sure
Which is 100% golfed
We need to make a most wonderful language to outgolf Dennis.
@quartata Too much work. I'll just use a longer no-op.
17:44
@zyabin101 have you never heard of comments
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I gave up on pl since its one goal (outgolf Pyth at everything) has been handily done by Jelly
Instead I'm trying out a stack-based language with 4 bit instructions
@quartata Oh. :(
@quartata huhhhh
That's cool!
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I might try and finish some of the stuff I had in mind
But I'm not going to take it as far as I planned
I was really honestly planning on absolutely destroying Pyth
But the victory just won't be as sweet
Huh. Well, now you need a way to destroy Jelly.
@zyabin101 you can't be serious...
17:46
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Melt it.
@quartata If you're using 256 byte values, you can do the same thing by base-256-compressing Pyth...
@Doorknob Or 256-compressing Jelly, for that matter :P
@Doorknob ... What's the point of that?
@zyabin101 "Editor's note: this challenge is cancelled because it was whited out. It is kept here for posterity." ... abandoned challenges should be edited down to just the title and deleted to reduce clutter in the sandbox.
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I have some ideas on this front (it's a race to the bottom! who will get there first!)
17:47
@Doorknob My goal was outgolfing Pyth at all challenges by at least 40% which that wouldn't do
I was close too
@quintopia We should collaborate.
Deniis is too powerful
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@quintopia You know, I'd welcome help with pl
Perl isn't most people's forte but
@quartata I'LL HELP YOU
I WILL LEARN PERL TO HELP YOU
@quartata Okay, write it in Python. hth
@quintopia That can't be done sorry
It would be a different language
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ <3
17:48
@quartata \o/
@MartinBüttner Edit: already done by @Doorknob.
If I can push this one final update then we could actually get somewhere
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Chopsticks?
I wouldn't recommend reading the source code for pl in the mean time
It's probably the worst Perl I've ever written. I'm gonna make it prettier
@trichoplax This is good.
17:49
Learn perl while I fix it
@trichoplax now I want some sushi
Which version? @quartata
Sushi 3.5

@Seadrus you wonderful stalker you
17:52
@MartinBüttner I prefer Sushi 2.7. It's archaic and good for golfing, because you don't need to wrap the imprinted fish with ("sushi wrapping stuff").
@trichoplax SUSHI GO!
@zyabin101 I know - I created the term. I hadn't updated it though. :P Thanks. — FlagAsSpam 16 secs ago
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ 5
I hate Perl 6.
They made the syntax really weird
@Timwi Failing to compile in Mono, hits internal "Out of Memory" point.
(the top one with v5)
Don't bother looking for an IDE
Just get Perl and use whatever text editor you want
The Perl debugger can be run with -d
@quintopia Shushi is to Sushi as C++ is to C. Shushi = Sushi++.
That's all the tools you'll need
17:59
oh okay
so where should I get it from then?
That's how the perl website said to get it
