10:01 PM
my two most upvoted challenges are also my 2 stupidest

@Fatalize Hey, same!

@FlagAsSpam That's a first. Usually people think it's USA and Friends and then they joke about how USA has no friends

(I only have two challenges :P)

difficult challenges are sometime a pain to answer, I already waste too much time on this site without doing them

My company just bought me a lottery ticket

10:03 PM
@Rainbolt wth
you should find a new company

Why? I still have everything I had before, plus a lottery ticket.

if they gave you money instead, you'd have twice the amount of money on average, plus not having to check if you won the lottery
(the latter term is probably the more important, actually)

I was going to say "Yea, you're right. I problem am too lazy to go check anyway." but then I realized that the gas station I go to has a machine that will scan your barcode and tell you if you won or not.

Is it a scratch-off style ticket, or one of the "pick the numbers" ones?

It's a printed out receipt paper thing
Powerball

10:08 PM
That seems odd to give an employee, since there's a pretty good chance you'd leave if you win
maybe they're secretly hoping to get rid of you

The chances of him winning are probably about the chances of him arbitrarily deciding to go work for another company anyway, though. :P

He did mention what I need to do if I win. He said I have to call in at least.

lol
What is your job? Lottery machine mechanic?
BC that would make sense.

Hello!

how much do you even win if you get lucky?
cause you're not gonna leave your job for 10k

10:12 PM
@Rainbolt we are asking you questions...

@ThomasKwa my challenge is featured in this post!

@flawr Haha the sweet innocence of youth

The most I can win is currently $496,000,000

@NewSandboxedPosts Me too, buddy. Me too.

oh

10:13 PM
I am not a lottery mechanic. My job is in my profile

so yeah you're leaving your job for that

Honestly, no lol

You play Magic?
BUDDY!!!

Code golf finally mentioned on Computerphile but no mention of PPCG :(
(Or did @El'endiaStarman already share that?)

D:

10:14 PM
@Calvin'sHobbies I linked it a few hours ago, no PPCG yeah :(

Okay, should I report this as a chat glitch?

@Calvin'sHobbies Somebody should leave a comment on it mentioning PPCG.

Every time I click a sandbox post link from chat, chrome says my connection isn't private.

@RikerW Are you on HTTPS?

But when the https is removed from the front, it works.
@Doorknob ^

10:15 PM
SE does not support HTTPS
yet

@RikerW meta is always http I believe, so browsers/security extensions may complain

@Doorknob I thought the main sites did but not metas.

@AlexA. It works, but it's not officially supported

OIC

So is it chrome's fault or SE Chat's fault?

10:16 PM
@TanMath How does it look?

@RikerW It's nobody's fault. You're using HTTPS when HTTPS isn't supported.

I get a 403 Forbidden when I try to connect visit a sandbox post link with https. Doesn't work at all for me.

If anything, it's your fault. :P

Thank you @NewSandboxedPosts.

10:16 PM
@NewSandboxedPosts a dog!

Undooooooooo!

@Doorknob I am not doing anything though. But you are probably right. :P

> Kinda silly how my only points on codegolf stackexchange are from a popularity contest
Comment on the Computerphile video ^

Again, "Privacy error"

@Doorknob A dog who has no idea what he's doing and is probably about to get slaughtered on meta PPCG.

SE does not support HTTPS
@Undo hahaha

Yes, but the link in chat is the https one...

@RikerW Probably a protocol-relative link. That'll make the link HTTPS if you're clicking it from HTTPS.

Okay.

@Calvin'sHobbies You already linked this?

10:19 PM
That's a link to my comment about ppcg

um, no?

It links to the video, not a particular comment.

^

At least that's what it does for me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

^^

10:20 PM
> Wait. You don't run linux. Why may i ask ?
> (... other user provides decent explanation ...)
> Then you're not sufficiently advanced

@AlexA. Scroll down a bit, you should see a linked comment at the top. (Is there a better way to link to Youtube comments?)

@Doorknob Ah, YouTube comments...

What's the maximum number of digits we need to support? — Thomas Kwa 2 mins ago
heh
What's reasonable here?

1 billion digits of precision is always required here

10 to 12

10:21 PM
Yeah, or that ^

@ThomasKwa Yeah, me punching my TI comes up with the same thing
10 it is

@Undo If it's only 10 digits, you should probably add a rule about whether hard-coding digits is allowed or whether it actually has to be calculated

@AlexA. I can't help if Youtube doesn't autoscroll to the linked comment like SE does

@Calvin'sHobbies How old is the comment?
I'm just trying to look for it manually.

@Doorknob I'm more interested in seeing how people do the graphing part, so hardcoding is probably okay

10:23 PM
@Undo That sounds like calculator abuse

Best kind

@AlexA. Like 3 minutes

BigRationals. Sum of the reciprocals of the factorials.

@Calvin'sHobbies The newest comment it's showing me is from 9 minutes ago. I guess I have to wait for YouTube to have a cup of coffee before it can show me the comments.

One job and Calvin fails

The comment still isn't showing up for me when I sort by newest first.

@MartinBüttner I'm shocked and delighted to be included in that list ;)

@Geobits come back! Love us, hate us, rate us!

10:28 PM
I've now made a 2x11 display in minecraft... probably still needs to be bigger...

@trichoplax I thought you were into artificial life? ;)

@MartinBüttner "Into" yes, "competent" not so much...

> When did Jean-Ralphio get into coding?

@MartinBüttner Did you get any response? I haven't read through the transcript.

hahahaha

10:30 PM
@trichoplax Zgarb sent me something related but not quite the same thing.

....the puns. >_<

@MartinBüttner Want to change over the pin from "suggest categories" to "nominate"?

@MartinBüttner It's a good place to save drafts of posts until the poster thinks they're ready. Question drafts are not always saved properly and using an external markdown editor is a hassle.

@MartinBüttner I don't have in depth knowledge of CAs but from how universal they can be, I'm guessing that with some work you could convert whatever polyomino changes you settle on using into an equivalent CA. Lack of knowledge prevents me giving even the suggestion of a proof for that though...

@AlexA. sure, give me a minute

10:33 PM
Minute granted

there goes the first nomination

edit the old message or pin a new one?

Q: Best of PPCG 2015 — Now Accepting Nominations!

Martin BüttnerYou have chosen the categories for PPCG's first ever "Best of". We have decided in chat to stick to the top 7 categories, because using any more will probably divide people's attention too much. We've also decided to separate nominations from actual voting to avoid the FGITW effect. So here is w...

@MartinBüttner I'd pin a new one I guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

10:35 PM
We're doing a "Best of PPCG 2015"! Please nominate candidates for the 7 prizes.

It kinda bothers me that the triangles in our up and down vote buttons are almost but not quite equilateral

too bad there isn't the rookie of the year for answers
this one would have been good

@Fatalize Yeah I would have nominated that.
But then it doesn't seem to be huge loss, seeing they already got over 1k rep out of it, and haven't contributed anything else since.

So many nominations in mind, too hard to type on phone :P

@AlexA. haha, "practical use"
well
thanks :P

10:40 PM
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ practical enough

@Rainbolt Maybe you could send SE an example of an equilateral triangle on an integer grid?

Can I just send them an equilateral triangle and skip the integer grid? Because I don't know what that is.

Technically they aren't even triangles.
For the reasons pointed out by trichoplax.

@Zgarb Why did you have to start posting challenges in November 2014? Couldn't you have waited 2 months? T_T

@Rainbolt I meant in pixels - if you make the width an integer number of pixels then the height will be irrational

10:42 PM
How are we supposed to vote on the nominations?

@MartinBüttner Can I add just the challenge link and fill in a description later?

@AlexA. not at all yet
that's the point of doing nominations separately

Oh okay, great

in a week or so we'll make actual voting threads
@Sp3000 yeah sure

@MartinBüttner I was about to ask "Why the intermediate step" until I read "to avoid the FGITW effect". Makes sense now.

10:45 PM
Done. :)

I really want to nominate this for something:

I just don't know what to nominate it for

Educational is the only category that fits isn't it?

Haha. Guy1 asks who is printing gibberish to the back printer. Guy2 sends a private response. Guy1 adds everyone back and says "Thanks all, we figured out who was printing."

Hello & good night everyone!

@Fatalize Mmmm yeah, thanks

10:50 PM
Question: Can I nominate primo's BF Hello World for Above and Beyond?

Can you? Yes. Should you?

@MartinBüttner Bad timing is my forte.

@GamrCorps Didn't he post it in 2016 though?
I had thought about the same thing

Oh did he. Darn it....
Thats too bad

Can always nominate it next year! :P

10:52 PM
^ will do

"Showcase of Most Promising New Golfing Language"
So are we nominating any new language used on PPCG or just languages that could rival Pyth/CJam?
the name is a bit ambiguous

If only that had been "Showcase of Most Promising New 2D Language"...

Goodbye for now

bye!

@Fatalize languages that are meant for golfing. whether they can actually compete with Pyth on a regular basis shouldn't be important I think.

10:56 PM
so not any esolang then, just those designed to be terse

Like Seriously, Vitsy, Jelly, pl...
Y'know, Jelly will probably win that one. :P

ESMin, Teascript, Japt on top of my head
as well

I'd like to see a graph of the number of golfing languages in existence over time. I think there would be an absurd explosion in 2015.
@Fatalize ESMin almost isn't a golfing language by our standards, since we score in bytes and ESMin is optimized for character count, not byte count.

Is the intent of labour of love for immense prepation from one author?
Or can it be from many authors?

from what I've read ESMin is designed so that the symbols used are kind of meaningful like APL

11:00 PM
I wish I could nominate most of the Programming Language Quiz answers for Above and Beyond

@GamrCorps Dennis' Piet/??? polyglot for that is still one of the craziest things I've seen on this site

I'm going to nominate a fortnightly challenge for labor of love. If it was intended to be a one author->one challenge kind of category, then it just won't win that nomination.

@PhiNotPi, @Sp3000 : I nominated SphiNotPi3000 for the teamwork award. :D

Thanks!

@Rainbolt well I'm fine with that nomination :P
but yes, everyone involved poured a lot of work into that, so I think it's definitely in the spirit of the prize
could someone write a SEDE query for Rookie of the Year?

11:15 PM
^

Working on it
Can someone have posted an answer prior to 2015 but not have posted a challenge prior to 2015?
(to be eligible that is)

@AlexA.I thought someone might - thanks :)

@AlexA. yes

@Sp3000 Well deserved :)
@MartinBüttner Cool, thanks

I see you also nominated the challenge, was going to do that but then I remembered bot flocks :P

11:24 PM
I don't think I paid a whole lot of attention to Bot Flocks for whatever reason
I forget why

It never got as much attention, unfortunately, although I feel like CH put more effort into that one. I'll check the chat logs to confirm when I write the description though

@AlexA. It wasn't as good as a game as RvB. I had envisioned more actual building with the blocks but most submissions just moved blocks around with the bots, making the whole block part kind of unimportant.

I find it amusing that you are deciding which of @Calvin'sHobbies challenges to nominate.
Not deciding who's, just picking which one of his...

I'm not deciding, just saying that while I did put a lot of work into BBBF, the end result could have been better

@trichoplax Sorry, totally forgot about that message. Well, since some CAs are TC, some form of conversion is bound to be possible, but I'm not sure how much it will actually resemble the structure of the kind of system I'm suggesting. You can't just encode the shapes in states for instance, because the changing states also mean that adjacencies change over time, which isn't possible in classical CAs.

11:33 PM
I'm nominating @StewieGriffin for "Less is More" for The versatile integer printer

@MartinBüttner I'm guessing the number of cells changes too, unless the shape changes are restricted to prevent that?

@trichoplax they could change yes, but I was thinking that a conversion would actually encode each of the compound cells in my system as a single cell in a classical CA

@MartinBüttner yeah, working on it

Hello!

Eh, something like this I think works ^
(cc @MartinBüttner)

11:41 PM
@AlexA. cool. a link to either the challenge or the user would probably be useful

I know you can do that in SEDE but I don't know how
I can't remember the syntax
It's something with square brackets

@Fatalize seriously of course!

What is the necessary score?
for the challenge I mean?

there is no necessary score

Then how do you guys decide if it is a good challenge?

11:46 PM
awesome
@TanMath reading it is a good start.

@MartinBüttner I already did!
@AlexA. what is this?

the score isn't everything and too often dominated by The HNQ Lottery™
@TanMath eligible users for the rookie category

@MartinBüttner ok... I guess I lose...

@MartinBüttner If this is in reference to the query, I wanted to order by something, so I used descending votes, user ID, date. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@AlexA. no it was in reply to TanMath
codegolf.stackexchange.com/q/44345/8478 seems like a decent candidate
their other challenge too: codegolf.stackexchange.com/q/49747/8478

11:51 PM
@MartinBüttner why?

@ZachGates one thing you might mention about the versatile integer printer is that the score was ridiculously well-balanced for a combined score. (it was probably more luck than anything else, but it's part of what made the challenge as fun as it was)

Oh, so self nomination is fine?

@TanMath simple, interesting problem, well explained, allows for interesting answers. what more do you want from a challenge?
@TanMath yes.

@MartinBüttner how about my challenge?
I am a rookie!

Which one?

11:53 PM

Q: Decimal concatenation of squares

TanMathPremise One night, I was just contemplating on numbers. I found out about something unique about numbers like 7, 10, 12, 13, and more. They are squares of squares! Meaning, that when squared, are comprised of squares themselves. The OEIS calls them Squares which are a decimal concatenation of tw...

@quartata I will nominate you...just not sure for what category...

I'm kidding (mostly)
I don't expect to get nominated for anything, mostly because I haven't put effort into anything

Oh hey so that query I made only lists the first post made per user, not all posts for each user whose first post was in 2015.
(cc @MartinBüttner)

@quartata Working on one for you right now...

@AlexA. I'm aware.

11:55 PM
Like currently editing it in.

it's a good starting point though.

@MartinBüttner Oh, okay. I wasn't until now. I'll try to make it better, senpai.

10/10 would query again.

@TanMath You can nominate anything you want. Whether it's selected will be decided via voting in the next step of the process.

@MartinBüttner decimal concatenation ...I just posted it!

Btw Martin, I added the query as a comment on that meta answer
