Guys, I haz a logo:

I haven't added color yet.

@RikerW Hmm... I'll see what I can do with that.

How about a puzzle piece where the 4 edges are made up of {

Make the piece interactive, ie it can be dragged.
gtg now, bye.

The brackets seem a few pixels too close to the puzzle piece imo. Also, perhaps rotate the puzzle piece?

@Ampora Sure!

Just a thought though; the following is a metaphor for my knowledge of Graphic Design:

@PhiNotPi Hmm... Possible. I can sorta visualize it, but I or someone else will think of that.

I'm not a fan of the color scheme but the design is nice

@AlexA. I see that the increase rep meta thread is no longer featured, does this mean that it is (or isnt) going to actually happen, or is it just the timed feature tag?

4:24 AM
ok

@GamrCorps The featured tag on remains active on a question for a fixed amount of time. However, in this case we took it down before its time was up.
The conversation about it is pretty much over at this point; we're just waiting for word from the Stack Exchange overlords.
So in the interest of not having a ton of things featured at once, we un-featured the rep increase post in favor of Martin's best of 2015 post.

Anonymous
@AlexA. Expect a response around the time we graduate

Ah, ok. On an unrelated note, is there a limit to featured posts? Just curious.

@GamrCorps Not that I know of, but they're intended to only be for a small set of questions.
@Mego I'm told that the community team is aware of our request and will get back to us at some point.

@ՊՓԼՃՐՊՃՈԲՍԼ While our site is currently called Programming Puzzles and Code Golf, pure programming puzzles aren't actually on topic. The logo looks nice, but I think the design should not involve puzzles.

4:30 AM
That implies a finite amount of time, whereas our time until graduation is infinite. :P
@Dennis Actually I think the community consensus on meta is that they are still on topic. They just always get downvoted into oblivion every time they're posted.

@AlexA. Alright, let's transform that with f(t) = 1/t and get the fact that graduation time is now! :D
Or rather, when the site was first created. Hmm.

hahaha

A falling llama!

What do you guys think of this?

A: Best of PPCG 2015 — Call for Categories

GamrCorpsASCII Artist Best code arrangement (ASCII art, but with your code) in an answer that still solves the task. Example: 999 999 9 9 9 9 9999 9999 9 9 999 999 //prints "99 bottles of beer" lyrics

Hello (from the other side)

4:34 AM
@AlexA. I think a handful of votes on Meta is rather meaningless if 1. The community downvotes and closes such challenges. 2. The very second default close reason says that they are off topic.

@Dennis Should I add a golf flag?

Opposition to anything golf-the-sport related seems to be rather strong.
31
A: Graduation Design Ideas

MaltysenNo relation to the sport golf There should be nothing related to actual golf in the design. Our name may make for good puns, but it would be way too cheesy to be used.

@AlexA. Better color scheme suggestion?
@Dennis Hmm... substitutes?
(Better ideas?)

@Dennis I think like a single golf club somewhere might be fine but I just don't want the site to look like a golf course

@AlexA. Golf flag included?

How about a cup or a laurel wreath to symbolize competition?

Sure.
I'll see what I can do.

How about a golfing tee with something like this on top:

@Dennis Granted, even the meta answers aren't entirely clear. The highest voted one says that it's meant to be like a long comment on another answer. The only clear thing was that my suggestion that they not be on topic has a negative score.
@GamrCorps Looks too much like HTML tags, IMO

4:41 AM
@AlexA. We wouldn't want those on a website.

@AlexA. Well, any other ideas on symbol(s) that represent programming in general?

It's a fine icon, I just don't think it's representative of the site

@AlexA. If you can't say something productive, say something else.

Oh sorry, that's "bite symbol."
Oh damn, I should have said "shortest code in bites wins" on World Big Dosa.

4:46 AM
I am not sure if this is denial phase..

Why not just make a tag, and have the icon be a list of all questions with that tag

is code "minimized" or "minified"?

4:50 AM
Minified me thinks.

Minification (also minimisation or minimization), in computer programming languages and especially JavaScript, is the process of removing all unnecessary characters from source code without changing its functionality. These unnecessary characters usually include white space characters, new line characters, comments, and sometimes block delimiters, which are used to add readability to the code but are not required for it to execute. Minified source code is especially useful for interpreted languages deployed and transmitted on the Internet (such as JavaScript), because it reduces the amount of data...
tl;dr either

Does someone want to suggest a color scheme for the logo?

No, he's Shirly.

@ՊՓԼՃՐՊՃՈԲՍԼ Seadrus?

@Dennis What's so surprising to you?

yeah, why so surprised?

@Dennis People minify their JavaScript so that browsers don't have to load as much crap or whatever idk

4:53 AM
^ It actually says that in the onebox.

> Minified source code is especially useful for interpreted languages deployed and transmitted on the Internet (such as JavaScript), because it reduces the amount of data...

Alex Can't Read

Well, who usually reads the whole onebox?

@El'endiaStarman How can a definition apply to all languages and especially JavaScript?

4:54 AM
Because JS is especial.

@Dennis It's especially used with JavaScript.

"context" rather than "apply"

You hardly ever see minimization of code in other languages because readability is important, and because space (RAM or disk) is cheap.

@Dennis It's just weird writing. JS is mentioned twice, only the second mention is really necessary I'd say

^

Anonymous
4:55 AM
@Dennis The primary usage of minification is with JavaScript, because it's dynamically loaded in browsers way more often than any other language. When was the last time you needed to load some Python code for a page to work?

omg, we really need to minify this Java code to reduce 2 KB out of it

^ just use Glava

Anonymous
JS is used for client-side scripting waaaaay more often than anything else

It's pretty much the only game in town right now. Flash is on its way out and Silverlight died a while ago.

Silverlight is only used once in a silver moon

4:56 AM
I'm not saying that minification is as common with other languages than with JS, but the wording of the Wikipedia article is still way off.

Oh, there was Actionscript too, right? That one died too. :P

Programming Minification & Code Golf

I understood the wording fine. [shrug]

HTML and CSS could potentially benefit from minification also (and I've seen CSS get minified), but they're typically a few orders of magnitude shorter than JS (especially when you need to load a buttload of libraries like jQuery)

Hmm. More recent than I thought.

@Calvin'sHobbies 10/10 very annoying

I click a link to read content on your page, nothing else!
So, Adblock is an oft-used tool on my computer...
Though recently I encountered a website that also disabled scrolling. I closed the tab after a minute of trying to get it to work properly.

It disabled scrolling?
ಠ_ಠ

Yeah. I think I was supposed to close the pop-over a proper way.

5:15 AM
My personal favorite are websites that put a giant, grey div over the content because AdBlock is enabled.

I haven't encountered one of those yet.

I did recently. And blocked the div with AdBlock.

My favorites are the ones that refuse to work unless you turn off AdBlock.

Well, half of the name includes content that's generally deemed to be off topic.

5:23 AM
True that.
I vote we change it to PPCG - The "Perpetually Peeved at our Classification" Group.

Haha

IMHO there's no bigger slap in the face than posting a programming puzzle on a site called Programming Puzzles, just to get it closed for being off topic.

Perpetual Pedantry and Code Golf

@Dennis I agree entirely that "Programming Puzzles" shouldn't be in the name. I also happen to think "Code Golf" shouldn't either, but I'm quite outnumbered there, I believe.

Why shouldn't it?
16 mins ago, by Alex A.
Personally I think Dennis' proposal to rebrand ourselves as Code Golf makes the most sense. We're already CodeGolf.SE, we're known as Code Golf internally at SE, and it's the vast majority of what we do here.

5:27 AM
It seems oddly specific.

Looked through the name suggestions again and I think I like "Code Sports" the most.

But it isn't Code Sports. It's Code Sport. shudders

I mean, it's a large part of what we do, but is it intentionally the largest part of what we do? I'd rather a community built around fun programming challenges that happens to have a lot of code golf (since they tend to be short, simple, sweet, etc) than a community built around code golf that happens to allow other kinds of challenges too.

How about Code Sports? — Alex A. ♦ Aug 28 '15 at 4:59

We originated because they wanted people to stop posting code golf competitions on Stack Overflow. :P

5:30 AM
That's true, but I don't think it's quite fair to compare the old and the current.

"Probably Perpetually Can't Graduate"

Anonymous
@AlexA. "Code golf on SO got annoying so we made this site for you guys. It will never graduate. Have fun!"

hahaha

@BrainSteel As I have said before, I don't think the name has to reflect the entire scope of the site. Code Golf is a well-known type of programming competition and describes our site a lot better than Stack Overflow, Super User or Server Fault describe their counterparts.

^

5:32 AM
I don't know. When you read Stack Overflow, it'd be a bit silly to think it's a site dedicated to stack overflows, so your next guess is "oh, it's probably a site about general programming errors/advice, and they wanted a catchy name." If you see Code Golf, it would be easy to assume code golf is all we do.
Code Golf is both not catchy and too specific. I think you can have one or the other, but not both :P

I think Mauris summed up how I feel about it quite well:
Sep 10 '15 at 23:40, by Mauris
"Code Golf (but it's a little more broad than that, and some other things are on-topic, if you read the rules)" is much better than "PPCG (but it's a little more narrow than that, and the thing you're thinking of is probably off-topic, and you won't read the rules)".

@Dennis Um... Yes?

We seriously had one of those earlier today.

Rachel Karen Green is a fictional character, one of the six main characters who appear in the American sitcom Friends. Portrayed by actress Jennifer Aniston, the character was created by show creators David Crane and Marta Kauffman, and appeared in each of the show’s 236 episodes during its decade-long run, from its premiere on September 22, 1994 to its finale on May 6, 2004. Introduced in the show's pilot as a naive runaway bride who reunites with her childhood best friend Monica and relocates to New York City, Rachel gradually evolves from a spoiled, inexperienced daddy's girl into a successful...

@El'endiaStarman Basically, Brainsteel built this automatic chicken harvester in Minecraft. Live chickens go in the top and get trapped in a water vortex that puts them into an oven. It's actually quite horrific if you think about it too hard.

Having built a chicken farm myself, I can imagine.

It's not that bad. Except for the part where the chickens lay eggs so occasionally you just roasted a baby chick.

@AlexA. Hahahaha. That's not terribly different from what I did. I trapped chickens in a 9x9 room with two additional squares to either side: a pressure plate and a trapdoor. Below the trapdoor was a piston-crusher system...
It didn't work perfectly. I probably lost a significant portion of the loot. But I had a ton already from the manual-slaughter era.
