@TanMath Why are you asking us? Have you not tried it?

@El'endiaStarman i cannot! i am having problems with opencv

7:15 AM
@NewMainPosts \centerText(\forEach{\chop(\input(,\N|\join('', perhaps. 11 bytes.

@El'endiaStarman in what language?

PY-ACIDIC.
Yet to be developed.

@El'endiaStarman again, if you need help, i am available!

Can you figure out how that code works?

@El'endiaStarman which one?

7:24 AM
8 mins ago, by El'endia Starman
@NewMainPosts \centerText(\forEach{\chop(\input(,\N|\join('', perhaps. 11 bytes.

@El'endiaStarman how am I supposed to know? you wrote it!
your parentheses are not clear anyway
@Mego the function code for my combination and permutation works, but it is the input part that doesn't. How can I do that?

@El'endiaStarman At a guess, chop up the input, join it together, then center
@El'endiaStarman Though I can't quite make out the order of operations on chop, input, and join.

@TanMath I'm aiming to have code that doesn't always need parentheses.

@El'endiaStarman but where the parentheses is confusing

Okay, here's a version with all of the parentheses: \centerText(\forEach{\chop(\input(),\N)|\join('')})

7:32 AM
@El'endiaStarman what does chop do?

Good question.

@El'endiaStarman does centerText center with a space, or something else?

Here's a hint: \N is the sequence 1, 2, 3, ....
@TanMath It centers text. In the output.
Implicit output, by the way.

@El'endiaStarman what is the python equivalent?
wait, i think I get it
@El'endiaStarman what is the need of the for loop?

Note the \forEach{...|...} grouping.

7:38 AM
@El'endiaStarman so what does | do?
@El'endiaStarman it is weird you expect me to understand a language with no documentation and implementation at all!

@TanMath Well, you're the one who wants to help (maybe). You should have some idea of what I'm aiming for.
@TanMath Well, here's a hint: look at what sorts of things are grouped on either side.

@El'endiaStarman it does .join('') for each of the chop?

is that a yes or not?

That's a yes. :P

7:47 AM
good.. thanks!
it looks like you are aiming for TI-BASIC & Mathematica style w/ Python
@El'endiaStarman \N goes till len(string) BTW?

@TanMath Infinite sequence, actually.
But \chop runs out of stuff to chop.

ok

@El'endiaStarman This is a good idea. Writing the ideal solution and making a language to match..

hahaha ;)
It's really more because I don't know the syntax yet.
(I'm behaving very Platonically, actually. As in, it's like the language already exists and I just have to discover it.)
But anyway, I want to have concise but still unambiguous syntax for control structures and operations. Which is hard.

@El'endiaStarman Ah, yes. @isaacg in fact found Pyth encoded in the lyrics of a Miley Cyrus song.

7:55 AM
I wonder what might come out of a Justin Bieber song...

@El'endiaStarman wouldn't this be a direct python translation of your "pseudo-code"?:
if so, why isn't it working?

See: code review.

@TanMath You can do .center()? Huh. Didn't know that.

@TanMath j never changes

@TanMath Look at the other lambdas, figure out what is different

7:59 AM
@Calvin'sHobbies Good idea as long as it doesn't cause overfitting ;)

Also, j should be this sequence: 0 1 3 6 10 15 ....

@Calvin'sHobbies still does not work
@El'endiaStarman wait really?
It does not print anything!
@VoteToClose code review is not for debugging, is it?

Well, that's what it should be if you want it to match my PY-ACIDIC code.

@El'endiaStarman but at this point it should print something, yeah?

@Sp3000 Sure, but with enough sample points you could form a corpus of the most desirable commands and turn them into something real. :D

8:02 AM
...I'm considering changing the name. 8 capitals is a bit much...

@El'endiaStarman Py-ACIDIC

oooh!
Pyadic! Or Pyacidic.
Probably shouldn't go with the former because then math people will be expecting p-adic numbers...

Anonymous
@El'endiaStarman All the more reason to go with it. Confuse the math nerds :P

Or maybe Suhsint...

@aditsu I have a backwards-compatibility breaking feature request. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Make h pop the condition when the loop terminates.
I think I almost never want to keep the condition, and when I do, I usually know if it's 0 or "" so I can get it back with a single character. (Or two in the very rare case that the falsy value is 0c.)
The current behaviour of h can be recovered with _}g.

@MartinBüttner @aditsu Seconded. h; is a lot more common than h<anything else>.

Seconded as well. (Post delay due to race conditions)

1:21 PM
@MartinBüttner we probably only chatted about that (and I took some notes)
@MartinBüttner I can consider that for a future version

I'll open some tickets then
@aditsu Btw, remember that feature request about adding closures? A simple alternative would be to implement GS-style {}+
there's some ambiguity for ArrayList Block +, which could be resolved in favour of the block, but I think there are enough binary operators that are undefined for blocks yet such that you wouldn't even have to use +.

@MartinBüttner we talked about that too when discussing closures

oh right, I didn't recall that. I saw it in a GolfScript answer recently and thought it was the first time I saw that use of {}+

@Rainbolt Sure, but it's really annoying to get half a dozen notifications (within a few minutes) on my phone while I'm out and about for no reason at all, just because someone felt like bothering me.

The other one is about standard terms used in challenge specifications, whereas I thought yours was about technical terms used commonly in answers.

I was mainly posting it so that other people could add answers asking for definitions.

Q: The Many Terms of PPCG

VoteToCloseNote that this is different to this in that this relates to terms used in explanations to answers over terms used in challenge specifications. So recently I found that I was having some difficulty understanding explanations that contained words like 'tacit', 'monadic', etc. And I thought to my...

I got it. ;)

Do either of the examples (monadic, tacit) have meanings here that are different than what you'd find in a dictionary?
> tacit : adj : understood or implied without being stated

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I wouldn't know.

I guess my point is: Are you just looking for words that "aren't common" to make a dictionary, or looking for words that have a specific meaning here that is different than usual? I'd VTC the first.

2:45 PM
@Geobits around here I've only seen them used in conjunction with J (or maybe some other APL-family languages)
where "tacit" means "point-free" and "monadic" means "unary".

I just don't know if this Q is going to end up as anything but a target for "go read the dictionary" replies.
@MartinBüttner I think I've seen people use "monad" in general when talking about other esolangs. I hadn't noticed "tacit" used at all here, really.

If someone uses a word I don't recognize, my first thought is not to search our own meta for a definition.
3

^ That's the best argument, very well put.

@Geobits I'm still learning Haskell, but I believe "monad" there means something completely different.

I wonder where tacit was used. "Understood or implied without being stated" sounds like a linguistic argument was already being had.
Oh, it's in all of Dennis's posts lol

2:53 PM
I think the definition for tacit should be understood without having to explicitly list it ;)
2

Define "stack rotation" with a dictionary. :P

@MartinBüttner Yea, but I don't think that helps the dictionary case. If I put something as simple as "method" or "function" as a word-needing-defined, I might get several answers depending on the language of the answerer.

@VoteToClose That's two words

Ah, but that would be the point it would be most used for. The words "tacit" and "monadic" might have specific meanings for APL/J.

stack rotation: if you're doing this, maybe you didn't want a stack after all
@VoteToClose If you want to know more about APL/J terminology, you should look up those languages IMO.

3:00 PM
For some reason I have never felt the need to understand an APL or J post (I really only care about a handful of languages), but if I wanted to understand and I failed, I would probably just downvote the post. I wouldn't leave a comment for fear of appearing to be dumb.

You'd downvote a post because you can't understand it? Not sure if trolling or serious...

Depends. If, given an honest effort, the post is too convoluted or badly explained to comprehend, it could fall into the "not useful" area.

I guess it's a matter of perspective. Either I am not smart enough to understand the post, or the explanation is not sufficient enough to convey how it works.

Why did someone downvote my stack rotation definition? o_o

@Rainbolt If you leave a comment that something isn't clear, I'm sure most people would around here would be friendly enough to explain it to you in a different way or edit their post. If it actually turns out you overlooked something obvious you can always delete your comment.

3:02 PM
@Geobits I know the vote buttons say useful/not useful, but since when are code golf answers useful?
2

Here I judge them more as useful to the site, as in, "do I want to see more of these here". I don't downvote something just because I don't like it, but if all answers here were a jumble of code and a bad explanation, that would be bad.

I downvote posts because I don't like them honestly
But again, I only really vote on answers that I have put in some effort to understand
Which isn't very many

I see three close votes - Where else would this go? Plus, this question is fine when mine is not? Both questions relate to defining of a word relative to PPCG.

Common misconception - if it is off topic, it must be on topic somewhere else
Another common misconception - if this old question that is like mine is on topic, then mine must be on topic too

Which is why old questions should be closed/locked if they're not longer on topic.
IMHO anyway.

3:06 PM
The other one is a list of technical definitions we use within specs, not just a dictionary of words you haven't come across before.
It's not much alike at all IMO.

Meh. Okay then.
