12:00 AM
It's otherwise a tad confusing ^^"

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ For-each or For-n?

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I'll keep that in mind. ;)

@phase For-n, I think. It's @VoteToClose 's code

@phase Repeat top item of the stack times - for-n. :)
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I wrote it pretty quickly, and assumed you had pretty good understanding of the language's niggly details.

@VoteToClose I do ;)
I just don't have a good grasp on other peoples semantics ^_^

12:02 AM
Ah, okie. :D

I'd call, for example, a For-n loop a "For loop", and a For-each loop a "Iterative for loop"

@PhiNotPi Okay, the salt-lunch-lunch combination is probably optimal

does this have to have ASCII output?
and/or can have unprintables?
as in would this be valid output?
  ! #"&)*8/R5z<³DĀ

No, yes (provided that you state it (at least how I read it)), yes.

12:07 AM
coolio

@Seadrus which language? :3

js es6

@Seadrus I will break it so hard >:3 I have been working on an algorithm that will pick apart submissions and look for nontrivial solutions

o_o
5
is output to the console valid?

@Seadrus I don't know. Maybe

12:11 AM
wait why did u guys star that message? it is literally 3 chrs
4

star caboose

o~O you guys are nuts

@Seadrus "We're all mad here!"

okay seriously stop abusing stars

12:24 AM
/me stars all those messages
[whistles]

I don't consider it star abuse...

That's why I haven't cleared any of them by now. :P

I just got the Yearling badge three times on SO within 2 days. What? :P
Ah, I think I know why...
> Active member for a year, earning at least 200 reputation. This badge can be awarded multiple times.
> Member for 3 years, 5 months
My reputation 3 days ago: 131.
My reputation now: 631.

Did you rep cap three days in a row?

12:33 AM
I rep-capped yesterday and I think I just rep-capped.
I also got +15s from answer accepts.

Well the only way to get +600 reputation from one site in three days is to rep cap all three days. :P
@El'endiaStarman Wait, just now?

Haha, yeah, but note that I've only gotten +500. ...in two days, yeah, but still. :P

It's only been today UTC for 30 minutes.

Ah, nope, I thought wrong.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I honestly added class implementations over a bet. xD They might be useful for non-golfing purposes. Although I have no reason why anybody in their right mind would use Vitsy non-golfingly.

12:35 AM
I'm still thinking 8pm EST is 00 UTC, but that changed a couple weeks ago to 7pm.

Yeah, same. (Except 5pm PST for me)

Okay, it was actually +245, +165, +90 (+100 now).
So I almost rep-capped the second day.

In the past three days I've gotten +50, +55, and +30.

Q: Count sums of two squares

xnorGiven a non-negative number n, output the number of ways to express n as the sum of two squares of integers n == a^2 + b^2 (OEIS A004018). Note that a and b can be positive, negative, or zero, and their order matters. Fewest bytes wins. For example, n=25 gives 12 because 25 can be expressed as ...

ಠ_ಠ O_O 0_0 o_o ._. .. .

12:46 AM
@AlienG Looks lke you lost an eye.

No, it's just so small they look as if they're one.
Also, does anyone know how to "combine" two exes?

@AlienG o-o You suggest hell. Go in the corner and think about what you've done.

Some of you guys might find this fun: Big Data or Pokémon?

Nevermind, got it.
@VoteToClose But I'm in a circular room.

12:49 AM
D:

So then walk in circles indefinitely?

^ That shall be your hell.
:P

Not get eaten by crows everyday?

Okay, is it bad that I'm a little happy that I'm the only one to actually calculate the date on this answer?
hears the sound of people typing to rush out a mathematical answer

@VoteToClose This Python answer does, and has a better score.

12:57 AM
Oh, damn, I missed that. :D

can we output to the console? e.g. javascript console? — Seadrus 50 mins ago

1:18 AM
Hehehe. I did it.
Just merged exe files successfully

If I ever make an APL-derived langauge the first thing I'll do is make a shorter way to tell the interpreter whether to fork or atop.
Maybe like
command line flags
1 byte instead of 2 parens each

1:40 AM
@ThomasKwa Add loops
Please

@ThomasKwa "atop"?

@quartata Maybe that too
@El'endiaStarman Two composed functions

So like f(g(x))?

When there are three functions in a row in a construct called a "train" Dyalog APL does f(x) g h(x); that's called a "fork"

And if that's the case, then I don't think I know what "fork" means in this context.

1:43 AM
@El'endiaStarman Yes
Sometimes it's preferable to have f(g(h(x)) instead.

@aditsu what

@ThomasKwa So this is f(x)*g(h(x))?

Sorry
g(f(x),h(x))
But APL functions are infix

AH, okay.

Hey all!
Wasup?

A: When is Thanksgiving?

csga5000Javascript: function d(y) {alert("Nov 26")};d(prompt()); Super compressed version: prompt();alert('Nov 26'); 25 bytes - 25% (Because bonus applies, it works just as well for negative years as positive years): 18.75 bytes! Examples: Input:2015 Output:'Nov 26' Input:-2015 Output:'Nov 26'...

It's a joke answer that doesn't follow the spec.

@AlexA. What the actual
> Note: This may only work for some years.
@nicael After reading all my notes, if my program is not functional, you may wish to consider purchasing a new computer. Your current one may have bugs. — csga5000 2 hours ago
The messages literally appeared at the same time for me.

Same

@quartata you are bowing down for me?
@ThomasKwa thanks

I actually didn't know that picture was animated.
I just picked the most fitting ninja picture.

1:56 AM

Happy Thanksgiving!

@AlexA. Not me. :D

@TanMath Thanks, you as well!
@VoteToClose Good.

(Although it isn't yet Thanksgiving in USA, by UTC, it is)

How do you make an answer poof?
With delete votes, that is. >.>

2:03 AM
The answer has to have a negative net score, I think maybe -2, before it's eligible for community delete votes.

Golf it ^_^

A: When is Thanksgiving?

BabelJava 134 Calendar cl = Calendar.getInstance(); cl.setWeekDate(Integer.parseInt(a[0]), 48, 5); System.out.println("Nov "+cl.get(Calendar.DAY_OF_MONTH));

@VoteToClose what does v do in Vitsy?

i'm kind-of disappointed how straightforward the answers to sum-of-two-squares are in golfing languages in the posts so far
in thinking about it with python and haskell, i thought there were some interesting ideas and workarounds
but golfing languages seem to just have the features to do everything directly

O never understood that challenge

@xnor I thought my Julia answer was neat :D

2:10 AM
@AlexA. yes, i like it

Uses the floor(cos(pi*sqrt(x))^2) formula on OEIS
@xnor <3

i didn't realize there was such a formula
perhaps not coincidentally, julia is also not a golfing language

Right

do you know why the formula works?

can we output to the console? e.g. javascript console? — Seadrus 2 hours ago

2:11 AM
@xnor I have absolutely no idea why, but it does!

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

Cᴏɴᴏʀ O'Bʀɪᴇɴstring code-golf Word bubbles! Word bubbles is a game in which you, the puzzler, are given a grid of letters, and words to fill, like so: T O F R O R S T E _ _ _ _ _ (5) _ _ _ _ (4) The "solved" version of this puzzle would be STORE and FORT, and would look like thus: T<2-O<1-F | 3 v R...

@quartata what what

@aditsu what what what

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ what what what what

@AlexA. what what what what what

2:17 AM
@Seadrus what what what what what what

no

okay I sowee

What do you call the game where you change each of the letters one by one to make another word?

@Doorknob Sorry Dadknob

2:19 AM
haha

@TanMath Levenshtein stuff

no, I think he means like SHIP SLIP SLAP SOAP SOAR BOAR BOAT and stuff like that

I don't remember seeing a specific name for that game.

yeah, I've seen those before but I don't know the name (if they have one)

2:21 AM
It's called the SHIP SLIP SLAP BOAT game.

CODE (let's get to GOLF!)

is that a word?

I don't think so

I don't think it is

2:22 AM
Apparently it is and it means cabbage. o_O

the hard part about CODE->GOLF is getting the last letter to be a consonant

COLD

slip slap what now?

2:22 AM
but how do you get from CODE to COLD?

@El'endiaStarman GOLF

@Doorknob CODE -> COLE -> COLD -> GOLD -> GOLF

COLE isn't a thing
oh wait

1 min ago, by Alex A.
Apparently it is and it means cabbage. o_O

well Google tells me it's "archaic" no fair :P

2:23 AM
Now get from Programming to Puzzles ;)

@feersum they need to be the same length, unless you allow adding/removing chars

^ we should do that.
PROGRAMMING

In the version I played of this game that was allowed.
Same operations as Levenshtein distance.

2:24 AM
even then, adding two zs is near-impossible
so is getting rid of -ing

What dictionary are we using?

@feersum any valid English one

How do I tell if a dictionary is valid?

Code golf challenge: Determine whether it's possible to get from a string A to a string B using only deletions and swaps.

Dictionary.reference.com

2:25 AM
Probably been done, sounds familiar

@feersum We all assess the dictionary?

I came here to propose this challenge!
@AlexA. Stop reading people's minds!

Why byte size is so important.

@Babel That's the objective of code golf: to minimize the size in bytes of your code.

@Seadrus PROGRAMMINGS

2:27 AM
The winner is the submission with the fewest bytes.

@Babel because that is what code golf is!
@AlexA. you ninja'ed me!

Yes

You guys interested in my challenge?

Assuming it hasn't been done before. It sounds familiar.

2:29 AM
@AlexA. So what is it a duplicate of?

I don't know. I'd have to search through older challenges but I don't have time to do so at the moment.

Graph reachability if there's nothing closer.

I am java programmer..
I am bit uncomfortable with this Byte size
5
If you would recommend me a new language, in the area of reducing Byte code
which language should I choose
:D

Pyth. It wins most of the time. :P
BUT...it might be more fun to use a different language, or to make your own...

This is definitely the right place for someone named Babel.
4

2:34 AM
Also, CJam is Pyth's competitor, and the two are fundamentally different.

@feersum so Any suggestions.. ???

@Babel Minkolang. Or Vitsy. Or Simplex, if you're patient.

@Babel these languages are known as esoteric languages

you already got 2 suggestions.. and a few more now

BTW what should the sum of a string do?

2:36 AM
Go to esolangs.org and find a language that you are able to learn

uh... a lot of those are useless ^

wow you guys are awesome. !!

@Babel Thank ya kindly :D

@aditsu no..
I disagree

@aditsu I agree

seems like these languages are for just fun

@Babel Pyth is definitely a good place to start, since it is a procedural language (unlike most golfing stack-based languages).

Do they use these languages any where in real world ?

@Babel some of them are, but look into them deeply

@Babel Don't make me laugh.

2:39 AM
@Babel nope!

@Babel Tʜɪs ɪs ᴛʜᴇ ʀᴇᴀʟ ᴡᴏʀʟᴅ.

Unless you want to

I often golf in Python. It's much shorter than Java, yet very useful in real life.

I use CJam for real tasks from time to time

2:40 AM
@aditsu I think he means production code.
I use CJam a LOT for little things

@quartata pardon my naive

well, not really building projects in it

@Babel It's OK :P

Python is the best!

Let's just say they're named esolangs for a reason.
But seriously, start with Pyth. It's much less of a jump from a real language.

2:41 AM
Okay..

CJam and co. are strange if you've never used something like Forth before.

Or start with Befunge if you want to learn a stack-based AND 2D language! :D

@quartata agreed!

It's basically like Python, if you make all the functions one char and no parenthesis

Speaking of which, is there a simple stack-based language that's not 2D?

2:41 AM
I find pyth much more incomprehensible than Chinese :p but I haven't tried to learn it systematically, mostly judging from the answers

Simple as in about the same complexity as Befunge; 15 commands or so.

@aditsu That's because you have been ruined by CJam.

@El'endiaStarman what do you mean by 2-D?

What is this Brainfuck

@Babel Exactly what it says on the tin.

2:42 AM
@Babel it is a language with bad name

@TanMath You control where the instruction pointer goes, in 2D.

@El'endiaStarman thats Fantastic Weird Name..

@Babel BF is a tape-based language (think Turing Machine)

@quartata how could I possibly be ruined by CJam?

@aditsu Because you see something golfy and think in terms of a stack-based language.

2:43 AM
@El'endiaStarman many languages are not 2-D like Seriously

I suspect that if you went straight from a normal language to Pyth without learning anything else it would make far more sense.

@TanMath Most aren't.
But I find 2D (or greater) languages to be fun to program in.

@El'endiaStarman 4D!

@quartata yes... Agreed! I understood pyth very easily since O knew Python

@quartata I'm not trying to see pyth as stack-based, but it just looks like super-concentrated manifold nonsense

2:45 AM
@aditsu Admit it. +2 2 feels strange to you.

maybe a little strange, but it makes sense

@aditsu it is an OOP!

But I think subconsciously or whatever Pyth doesn't appeal to Golfscript-era folk (which includes me, honestly) because it's so different from a stack-based language.
@aditsu You know, I just realized something.
Pyth isn't like Python at all.
It's like Lisp.

Actually, it's pretty similar to Macaroni in concept :P

My "Y" key is starting to break.

2:48 AM
@quartata So soon your keyboard will have a lysp? :P

Yeah.
I'm not sure what to do.
I could be illiterate and say "u"

@quartata it is!

One of my good friends used to have a laptop where the a key was missing. So what'd he do? Copy a to clipboard and paste it everywhere he needed it.

@El'endiaStarman I considered this.

He got good at it.

2:49 AM
Really?

I think I'll do "vous" instead to look cool.

Why not change keyboard layout instead?

@feersum effort

And you'd still have one key that doesn't work.

Have to design a custom keyboard layout no thank vous

2:50 AM
There are plenty of keys that are nearly useless, unlike a.

Solution: Map caps lock to A

@quartata for me it's mainly because it has no trace of any comprehensible structure or syntax

No one cares about caps lock

@aditsu maybe if you place imaginary parens around stuff

Caps lock is useful! I have it mapped to escape when tapped, and ctrl when pressed with another key.

2:51 AM
@ThomasKwa I used to use caps lock instead of shift because it was easier on my keyboard

what

Then I got a new keyboard and realized how stupid that was

I can't possibly imagine how it would be easier

@Doorknob It was an Apple keyboard.

My friend only uses caps lock, and ignores the shift keys.

2:52 AM
Maybe the keyboard was several meters long.

explains everything

I just know that RLE is r something something something 8 (only because I've seen it enough times so it kinda stuck) -> that makes no sense!

wait what since when do I have a ಠ_ಠ at 8 stars
I didn't even notice until glancing at the starboard just now

@Doorknob Pin it so that you can cheat some more
Cheaty cheat cheat cheat

I didn't pin the 63 star one! (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻
10

2:54 AM
...I guess quartata is still a sore loser... :P

@Doorknob Oh, sure. And @ಠ_ಠ isn't a sock of Alex.
C'mon. Confess.

@quartata these are both true statements

ಠ_______ಠ
Okay, now I don’t want to alarm anybody in this room, but it’s just come to my attention that the person to your right is a sock of Alex. Also, the person to your left is a sock of Alex. Also the person sitting in your very seat is a sock of Alex. We’re all Alex.

Wait. If everyone is Alex, why isn't everyone posting in Julia? :P

okay seriously stop abusing code formatting

@Doorknob lmao
ayyyyy
