For once, ESMin will do fairly well... :P
:P

Is this right? It seems that their expected output has an extra 0 on the front.
It's a hexadecimal number, after all...

Hi people

@Mego hey! i have been waiting for you!

@Mego i missed you

@Mego the commands.txt has an upside down exclamation mark in 161 for some reason.

Anonymous
12:18 AM
@TanMath You're viewing it with the wrong encoding

cp437

Anonymous
Hold ALT, and type "161"

@Mego i am on mobile
@Mego on mobile, cannot do this

Anonymous
@TanMath How are you expecting to test Seriously code, then?

@Mego using your online interpreter... I also have another trick up my sleeve! hehehe

Anonymous
12:21 AM
@TanMath Hate to break it to you, but it's broken right now

@Mego seriously?!

@Mego you should make the hex dump editable and have it compile to the correct symbols

^
that would be very useful

@phase agreed! i wanted to do that.. but couldn't
why does this code not work?!:

Anonymous
@phase That will be happening soon

12:23 AM
i=raw_input()
if int(len(i)) % 2==0:print chr(((ord(i[len(i)/2])+ord(i[(len(i)/2)+1]))/2))
else: print i[-1+int(len(i)+1)/2]
it is for the find the center challenge...
here is what I have tried:
1.it works for cases when the length of the string is odd

o-o
that's pretty long XD

@TanMath An if/else for the length waists a lot of bytes, though I don't know how to reduce it in Python

2. when the length is even, it is supposed to go through the if, but instead goes through else.... why?!

int(len(i)) why not len(i)?

@phase idk.. i am dumb.. lemme see if that fixes
didn't fix it... now when I put "Hiya" it prints m instead of q...
@phase any other ideas?
I am never the first for answering challenges...

Anonymous
12:32 AM
print[chr(((ord(i[len(i)/2])+ord(i[(len(i)/2)+1]))/2)),i[-1+(len(i)+1)/2]][len(‌i)%2]

Anonymous
That's how you shorten if/else in python

@Mego cool! thanks man!
question is, does it work?

Anonymous
idk try it

trying

Anonymous
It should work the same as the code you posted

Anonymous
12:33 AM
All I did was shorten it

Q: May I create my own programming language, which uses existing compiler?

ZeregesSo, I like golfing, and I like modern C++. I am golfing in regular C++(11(14)) now, so obviously, I did not win a single challenge yet. I noticed, that both Pyth and CJam (probably languages, that win most of the time) were designed entirely for this purpose. I thought at designing my own languag...

Q: Negate a condition if a bool is FALSE

lorenzo-sLet's say I have a condition expression x and that I want to check if it is TRUE or FALSE depending on the value of a boolean y: y ? x : !x Is there a way to express it without repeating x expression? Something like how we can get a number or its opposite depending on a bool, without repeating...

@phase right about now

So many great language names.

Anonymous
12:48 AM
@Dennis And then there's O

What's golfier than a single-letter language name?

Anonymous
One with a readable compiler/interpreter

A zero byte language name
4

Now there's an idea.

Look at my new language called !

12:51 AM
ESMin usually zero bytes for me. At least from my phone. :P
4

when did golfing tips questions become off topic? codegolf.stackexchange.com/questions/64611/…

That isn't a golfing question.
It's a programming question.

"Is there a way to express it without repeating x expression?"
he's specifically asking how to reduce his code size

@Sparr Specific, language agnostic golfing tips don't make a lot of sense IMHO.

12:53 AM
sure, code deduplication is ALSO a general programming question, but that doesn't make it not a golf question

No, he's asking about how to do it without re-evaluating the variable.

@Dennis want me to add the tag for every language my answer is valid in?

Like with his date.hour example.

@Sparr Tags describe the question, not the answer.

he doesn't care about evaluation. date.hour has no side effects. he appears to only care about the duplication of the expression.
@Dennis sure, and I'd add a tag for every language a solution was added for

12:54 AM
But the time can still change.

language agnostic tips questions make plenty of sense

A user could run it right at the hour boundary :P

@LegionMammal978 I don't know of a language where that is true
first, date.hour implies a member, not a method. and even if it was date.hour(), I'm not sure I've seen a language where two calls to a method in the same expression aren't evaluated in the same context.

@Sparr Language agnostic tips can be found here.

/me needs to investigate that...

12:56 AM
Also, have you seen JS's new getters and setters?
They look like regular properties, but aren't.

sure. back to my second assertion.
Can that actually happen? will date.hour()+date.hour() ever produce an odd number in any language you can think of?

Depends on the time.
A hacker could possibly run it at the moment the hour changes.
(Of course, that would just be poor code design.)

What is 𝔼𝕊𝕄𝕚𝕟 anyways?

@phase Blackboard bold.

@phase a terribly named language

1:00 AM
oh that's dumb

@Sparr Imo the name is good

@phase A language that only uses 4-byte squares (I think)

bunch of squares on every browser ever

@phase Not if you have a good browser

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ you also think your name here is good, so your judgment is questionable.

1:02 AM
@Sparr ...
All judgement is biased.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Actually, while I do usually see them, they show up as squares when in a header tag (i.e., when it's like ##ESMin).

@El'endiaStarman Huh.

Is it me or does the word unupvote just look plain weird.

deupvote?

@Vɪʜᴀɴ It looks like the name of an element :P

What I don't understand is why people upvoted such a horribly-defined challenge

@Mego It's simple.
Most REPLs do this in 1 byte... and the bonus was horribly unbalanced.

Hey all!

@ThomasKwa It's simple, but underspecified

But it was a very simple challenge, so it got +42/-8

What text encoding should be used for input/output? Just ASCII (0-127)? Latin-1? CP437? UTF-8? These things needs to be specified. — Mego 1 hour ago

'1' = char code 1

does anyone here put your PPCG solutions into github or any other source control?

2:18 AM
@Sparr No because inline code is required
We had someone who did that a while back actually

@Sparr I don't. My answers tend to be too short.

Doorknob fixed that with a nice trout to the face

@Sparr Some of the first PPCG solutions I did with Minkolang actually are on GitHub, but that was before I had the online interpreter so I had to save them to a file.

Oct 25 at 0:48, by quartata
Then we'll get @Doorknob to whack him with a trout until appropriate amounts of mod respect and understanding have entered his bloodstream
Oct 25 at 0:50, by El'endia Starman
@Doorknob Don't deny you'd love to do that... ;)

@quartata I'm not thinking of using github as the authoritative source for scoring. I just want people looking at my github to see more of the code I've written.

2:20 AM
@Sparr Ah.
I guess you could do it I suppose.

golf stuff doesn't necessarily belong on github, but there are a lot of non-golf things on PPCG

I think some people do that with really incredible stuff (like the chatbot challenge or the all color challenge thingy)

codegolf.stackexchange.com/questions/35328/… <-- I want future employers to see this

You could do it with whatever if you wanted obviously :P
@Sparr This would be something nice to put.
Your Penrose game of life would be good too.

so now I'm wondering... one repo per challenge? one repo per challenge website? one repo for all my competitive coding stuff?
@quartata yeah, that one too :)

2:21 AM
I'd say one repo for all of them.

That feel when you want to downvote a poor challenge like "Find the center" but also want to upvote it so your answer will gain visibility...

Like a "exceptional-ppcg-repo"
@ThomasKwa I will confess I have been secretly editing the truth machine catalog so it will stay on top of the home page
I'm like <100 views away from the gold badge for that and it's killing me

I don't think anything else I've done was anything special

The answer I'm most proud of is from the future

@ThomasKwa Your minimal nethack one had effort
Hell, all of your answers have effort
I don't think I've put effort into any answer I've made
...yet
I'm working on something special actually, but it's really difficult and it's on a challenge from liek two years ago
It was a pop-con

2:31 AM
I also need to get some real code out of gists
I've got a few things in gists that is worth showing off, I think

Score ###/### what are the ###s ?!

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Filler

@quartata ....

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ The first ### is the cops score, you add the two scoring criteria. The second ### is robbers score

@Vɪʜᴀɴ sigh

2:32 AM
Oh, sorry I thought you literally meant why are the #s there

3
A: Find the center

Vɪʜᴀɴ ²(x[t=xn/2]c+xv[t]c)/2) Uses @ETHproductions idea of reversing the string. Try it online Ungolfed && Explanation TeaScript is still JavaScript so it functions a lot like JavaScript too. C((x[t=xn/2]c+xv[t]c)/2)

So, my challenge's score is 256/2^2+256/256=65; what is the second bit?

@Vɪʜᴀɴ While you're at it, why don't you just make your entire answer an image too? :/

@Doorknob hehe
I personally love the header

@Doorknob I don't know that much SVG

2:34 AM
I think it would be really cool if we had a header maker for a few esolangs

@quartata I think it's horrible and I'm very tempted to edit it out

So like a logo and then a generator for the byte counts

Unicode language names were bad enough...

@Doorknob Why?
I mean, it looks cool.

@Vɪʜᴀɴ How do I calculate the robber's score?

2:34 AM
I think it looks strange compared to the other text headers, but if they were ALL image headers then it would look amazing.
We'd definitely need a generator of some sort for it.

@quartata oh sure, so we should add text shadow and gradients to all of our answers and surround them with <blink> tags cause that's fancy too

Like give a logo and the byte counts

please no
2

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ 2^<num_langs>+<roundDown_Length_to_closest_power_of_two>

@Doorknob This is extreme.

2:35 AM
@Vɪʜᴀɴ ._.
Pʟᴇᴀsᴇ ᴇxᴘʟᴀɪɴ ᴛᴏ ᴍᴇ. I ᴀᴍ ᴏɴʟʏ ᴍᴏʀᴛᴀʟ.

From robbers thread:
"2 to the power of the number of different programs used in the cop's answer
Round the number of bytes in the interweaving down to the nearest power of 2."
^ sum of those two criteria

wait that was wrong

@quartata YES. I'm going to go make a generator (if it's okay)

I'm with Doorknob on this. The image header is extremely unnecessary.

and obnoxious :/

2:38 AM
Seriously, what's wrong with it? It doesn't seem that intrusive to me.
It might be a little annoying on mobile but that could be easily fixed.

@AlexA. I'd say it looks nice and it's won't interfere with questions that don't have leaderboard snippets

It feels like it's from a 10-year-old website.

@Vɪʜᴀɴ Hell, if you provide alt text the leaderboard would still work
@Doorknob That's a flaw with the Teascript logo in particular, not the idea.

no it's not

^

2:40 AM
Seriously, how many websites today use images for headers?
It's completely unnecessary and extremely prone to linkrot too.

@Doorknob google.com
2

There are basically no positive effects that could come from it.
@quartata That would be called a "logo."
