@Mego oh it's a disaster

@Mego ?

There's a meta post about it. Let me go find it...

Yeah, as a room owner I can confirm that it's absolute trash

It's not so much bad as that there's basically no moderation.

What's Mos Eisley though?

It's kick or nothing AFAICT.

Q: Flags in chat are defective by design

Benjamin GruenbaumYes, I know the topic has been discussed before. I know that Meta already has threads that complain about how flagging doesn't work. I wanted to give a practical example. Today, a user came in to the JavaScript chat and asked the following question: Hey guys, as soon as I embed javascript,...

why do I always spell "emperors" as "emporers"

The mods:people message ratio is going up in here.
And yes, that kinda implies you're not people.

4:07 AM
Why would you think that mods are people?

I dunno, just putting it out there before someone called it out.

Mods are people modulo responsibility tacos

So if you take away as much responsibility as you can from people, what you have left are mods? That sounds... backwards.

Who said responsibility? I have tacos.

Exactly!

4:09 AM
Well of course Doorknob has tacos. He's in Texas.
I'm surprised at you, Seattle-man.

There are more tacos per capita in Washington.

I find that hard to believe, but I've only spent limited time in each state.

@Doorknob Hi

hahaha
that happens to me all the time

@Geobits Which is why he needs tacos. He has a deficit to make up.

With enough tacos he might become a people

What could possibly go wrong?

Sounds good to me.
@Calvin'sHobbies Alex is giving up his diamond for tacos. It's yours now.

Whats a very simple one line ascii art taco?

Tbh Calvin is the most modly a user can get without actually being a mod - well-respected, impartial, fair, and mostly-sane

@Mego :)

4:16 AM
> mostly-sane
ha ha, that's funny
none of us are sane :P

Yeah, thanks for that

Anonymous
@Doorknob Relatively speaking, of course

Peter's up there too, but I'm pretty sure he'd need modhood forced on him physically.

He's one of the most sane members, that's for sure

(re: Calvin)

4:18 AM
But I have no desire to be a mod (except to id @ಠ_ಠ)

That doesn't matter, it's been decided on a whim by a minority.

@Geobits Peter's endless quest to fight ambiguity sometimes comes off as abrasive, though, to some people. He's a great guy, though, and very helpful for getting sandboxed stuff ready for main.

Anonymous
though though though though though

@Geobits You could at least appease me and answer my taco question

Sandpaper is good sometimes. I'd rather have that than one who's out to make friends more than improve quality, at least.
@Calvin'sHobbies The ASCII art one? Have you met me? I don't do ASCII art :P

Anonymous
4:22 AM
@Geobits Agreed. I'm just saying, I don't know that he'd be popular enough with people to win an election. I'd support him, but I don't know about the majority of the site.

I mean the actual art, like (( or something. I was gonna use it in a mini challenge

@Mego Ah. Elections. Yea, maybe that's true. I think the election system is bit flawed in that respect.

@Geobits ... :(

@Calvin'sHobbies I really don't know. I tried for a minute or two to think of something, but nothing ended up looking like tacos :(
@AlexA. You're the one that wanted tacos.
(and defined mods to be people without tacos)

I've confused myself
What do tacos have to do with moderation

4:25 AM
You should eat them in moderation

I didn't think they had anything to do with it until a moderator told me otherwise.
Now I just assume that's part of the SE Moderator Agreement.

The Taco Clause

With sour cream it's the Taco Clause Supreme.

Anonymous
@Geobits I think the elections system is fine. With the recent removal of one of SFF's mods, it shows that abrasive people may be great as users, but not great as mods. The ideal mod is well-respected, well-liked, and positively contributes to the community.

@Mego Maybe. I've voted in them in the past, but it always has a high-school-student-council feel to it to me.

Anonymous
4:28 AM
If people don't like a mod, it doesn't matter how much good work the mod does for the site - it has a negative influence on the site.

I have no issue with calling out someone in chat for blatantly copying an answer

@ETHproductions does Japt have any variables that can be used for variable names?

I don't either, just adding to the hypothesis chain.
And I certainly don't have a problem downvoting blatant copies ;)

@ThomasKwa Agreed

4:44 AM
@Mego I don't believe that could be accomplished. A lot of our aliases are recursive.

You should cap the input so nobody dies trying to eat one of these posi/nega-burgers. 5 layers is already a bit much.

@Mego How does this work? Is that an empty function literal I see?

Anonymous
@phase So it's in the recursively-enumerable category :P

@Geobits Not a problem; the negaburgers cancel out the posiburgers

Do they destroy each other on contact? If so, that seems fun to watch.

4:47 AM
@ThomasKwa Yep. Get input, dupe, push "|", repeat n times (n = input), push "(", push "]", swap, concat x2, push `R`, push `` (empty function literal), rotate copy of n back to top, if n > 0 push empty function, else push `R`, execute function on top

@Calvin'sHobbies at 0500Z?
this is like the least active time
oh wait, you mean an hour to compose the challenge?

@ThomasKwa Meh, it gets more active. I often post around this time

Yea, I'd say an hour to compose, two days to tally votes sounds good, right?

Speaking of which, @Calvin'sHobbies, do you think the -30% bonus I included is good?

Unfortunately, my best challenge type (vote-wise) seems to be KotH, and those take slightly more than a hour from conception to posting.

5:37 AM
@El'endiaStarman Maybe. I was thinking you could measure how much bigger you euclidean code is vs manhattan to get an estimate of the bonus.

Guys, I did something my Math professor hadn't seen before.

For a sanity check

@Calvin'sHobbies That's basically what I did. Manhattan: 211; Euclidean: 327.
In terms of lines of code.

@Justin I'm going to need more details unless you want me to make an off-color comment about this ;)

5:38 AM
^

Basically, I used L'Hospital's rule in reverse

Though not so much off-color as just...weird or unexpected.
@Justin ....go on....
@Calvin'sHobbies So should I make the bonus bigger to incentivize it? 40%?

@El'endiaStarman Oh idk, 30 sounds good

Rather than using $\lim_{x\to a}\frac{f(x)}{g(x)} = \lim_{x\to a}\frac{f'(x)}{g'(x)}$ when we meet certain conditions, I went from $\lim_{x\to a}\frac{f(x)}{g(x)}$ to $\lim_{x\to a}\frac{F(x)}{G(x)}$, where $F'(x) = f(x)$ and $G'(x) = g(x)$. Made a proof 3 lines long rather than 8.

5:41 AM
I love having ChatJax. :D

^

@El'endiaStarman download where now what yes please

oh wow
fancy

5:45 AM
Here was the actual problem I did: Let $f$ be differentiable on an interval $A$ containing 0, and $(x_n)$ be a sequence in $A - \{0\}$, with $(x_n)\to 0$. If $f(x_n) = 0 \forall n\in \mathbb N$ and $f$ is twice differentiable at 0, show that $f''(0) = 0$. (Well, that's part b, part a was showing that $f(0) = f'(0) = 0$)

^ my mind has already exploded
@El'endiaStarman do you have a link?

aw shisct what did I do wrong

$?

Here was my proof: $f$ is continuous, so $$f(0) = \lim_{x \to 0} f(x) = \lim_{n \to \infty} f(x_n)\\ f'(0) = \lim_{x \to 0} \frac{f(x)}{x} = \lim_{n \to \infty} \frac{f(x_n)}{x_n} = \lim_{n \to \infty} \frac{0}{x_n} = 0$$. $$f''(0) = \lim_{x \to 0} \frac{f'(x) - f'(0)}{x - 0} = \lim_{x \to 0} \frac{f'(x)}{x} = L$$ For some $L$, because $f$ was twice differentiable at 0. By L'Hospital's rule, $$L = \lim_{x\to 0} \frac{f(x)}{\frac12x^2} = \lim_{n\to\infty} \frac{f(x_n)}{\frac12x^2} = 0$$
