Is this code golf a good way to learn a language, or is it more a game intended for the elites?

It's a good way to learn a language and become an elite
(really good way, if you want to learn the nitty gritty)

I think most good programmers are not good golfers and vice versa.

We don't just have golf - there are other types of challenge too:

Real testomonials from PPCG users! "I used this site and now I can for loop in FRACTRAN! It's amazing!"
Well I guess it does depend on what you want to learn
No OOP lessons to be found here, for example

Yeah, and also, code golf allows us to know more about the language's features.

@duzzy I definitely think so. I've learned a lot about my favorite languages by trying to golf them. :)

Thank you, everyone. One more question, though. I don't really see where the code golf rules are. the FAQ just seems to be the standard SE questions. Are there special requirements to giving answers if I were to try at some point to participate?

Hi guys, I have a question. I want to post a challenge based on this article: washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2015/11/18/… Basically write a program where the user inputs which states they want red and blue, and the output is a map with the right coloring. I don't personally know how to do it myself, but would it be a good challenge?

d_{iv}\left(x,n\right)=1\left\{\frac{x}{n}=\operatorname{floor}\left(\frac{x}{n}\right),0\right\}
p_{rime}\left(x\right)=1-\operatorname{sign}\left(\sum _{n=2}^{x-1}d_{iv}\left(x,n\right)\right)

Yes, code golf.

7:49 PM
Thinking of any special rules?

@geokavel Either way I think it'd be good to have a set image provided - for graphical, it could be a particular image with white states so state positions can be hardcoded; for ascii-art you should post the original ASCII art to be coloured

^ Otherwise they can make micro-resolution.

yeah, that's exactly what i wanted as far as the graphical output, you're given a blank map as an image file.

I want to make a programming language in which functions are defined externally as a wiki. Like, a person makes a page 1 with the contents of the function; when that character is called in said programming language, the code is executed :P

I'm in!
Just don't make it too publicly editable.

@flawr Ah, right.
That could be problematic.

If someone says "Sorry I am a horrible person. I forgot." and I say "No worries." does that mean I agree that they are a horrible person?

7:59 PM
@Rainbolt Yup.
Ish

What am I supposed to say? Can you guys just be me all the time?

"It's okay" means that. "No worries" means sort of "forget about it, all is okay"

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ You could make the code time dependent: The code uses the definitions of the functions that were active at the time the code was written=)

"Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo" is a grammatically correct sentence in the English language, used as an example of how homonyms and homophones can be used to create complicated linguistic constructs. It has been discussed in literature, in various forms, since 1967 when it appeared in Dmitri Borgmann's Beyond Language: Adventures in Word and Thought. The sentence uses three distinct meanings of the word buffalo: the city of Buffalo, New York; the somewhat uncommon verb to buffalo, meaning "to bully or intimidate"; and the animal itself, buffalo. Paraphrased, the...
