That's an impressive melange of length units.

Beautiful @El'endiaStarman

We make a challenge out of this.
Given a number and two strings represinging two of those units, convert the number from one of those units to the other.

if an ideal gas starts at STP, then is heated by 1337 BTU at a constant volume of 400 perch-rods then how many stone-ft^2/sec^2 of energy does it now have?

@DankMemes Not enough to travel time.

stone is a unit of mass apparantly
wow just imagine actually doing a physics problem in imperial units

9:04 PM
Twip

@TimmyD well you need 1.21 gw to travel time, which would require 4.1 gigaBTU / hour

@AlexA. [imagines whipping a long, thin stick through the air]

@Dennis I wish that was a legal form of punishment for using anything but the metric system.
I also wish I knew the metric system.

@Dennis lol that's not what happens in my physics class

9:07 PM
Then obviously they're doing it wrong.

IDK if you live in the US but we actually aren't imperial-system-nazis like people tend to make it look like
metric and imperial coexist peacefully
maybe we'd switch to fully metric if anyone happened to have a spare like several trillion dollars to go replace all of our imperial infrastructure

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

flawrStone per acre feet code-golf We all know about the versitality of the imperial units. But honestly, they are quite a lot of them to remember. Thats why we need a program that can convert lengths from one unit to another. Here is a table of some of those units: Task Write a program/function ...

hey guess what
travelling time is easier than you thought

We're all doing it now.

yet again, a poorly specified question gets to the top of HNQ and gets lots of answers that are ambiguously valid

9:11 PM
all you need is 1620000 horses!
which one
was talking specifically to dennis for posting that comic

Oh

I can reasonably infer that you live in the US at this point :P

@xnor I see "unique elements" and "convergence" on HNQ
Are either of those what you're talking about?

@AlexA. Nope, the triangle question.
(I think.)

9:13 PM
yes, triangles

lol
people've already posted JS, PHP, and matlab answers
so I can't really post unless I want to do TIBASIC or something
I should learn a golfing lang at some point

Or make one!

it's probably not going to be as fun though

@DankMemes Why not haskell?
There are only few people posting in haskell and it seems to be quite a good language for golfing.

I don't know it :P

9:16 PM
There's a reason why Haskell sounds like it has "hell" in the name.

I could make a language based on octave
just by assigning every useful function to a byte and having lambdas and stuff
I like octlab and ti-basic for their array/matrix handling

@flawr Haskell's good for certain kinds of problems, but the standard library is horribly limited... you have to import Data.List to be able to sort a list. :/

instead of sampletext.map(e=>myfunc(e)) I can do myfunc(sampletext)

@Zgarb Brutal.

@DankMemes I had that idea too, to make a language based on Octave.
I already made an analysis of the most frequently used functions here on PPCG=)

9:22 PM
@flawr What you should do with Octave is build and maintain the new GUI interface as a Mac application.

@AlexA. Are you a mac guy? ಠ_ಠ

Indeed I am!
ಠuಠ

How about ubuntu or something like that?

Yeah, take ubuntu - the OS X of the linux distros. Only worse.

@flawr I have an Ubuntu virtual machine.
@minxomat OS X and Ubuntu are my two favorite operating systems. :/

9:26 PM
openSUSE for life!

arch for life!

chocolate for life!

Never tried Arch.

arch's package manager is called pacman. That invalidates every other distro choice :P

Oh, I know pacman from an Arch derivate. I think it was Manjaro.
Beautiful distro, but I had to ditch it because some part of my hardware made clicking sounds with it.

9:28 PM
(Disclaimer: I only use arch on ARM machines [Servers and netbooks])

@DankMemes We should stay in touch because of this idea for making a golfing language of octave=)

@Dennis You use Fedora though, per one of your challenges?

in touch

cu guys, good n8

9:32 PM
Touch

good night @flawr

@flawr Cue guys, good nate to you too!
<3

<3

9:33 PM
bonna n8, bonne n8, gute n8

Italian, French, German. In each, n8 sounds like the corresponding word for "night".
@AlexA. Fedora on my desktop, openSUSE on my laptop. The desktop still has Fedora because I'm too lazy to change it. It acts as storage server for several other devices in the house, so if I start a reinstall, I can't stop before finishing it.
Tahnks.

@Dennis Haha, that wasn't on purpose.

@minxomat This is incredibly accurate.

ikr. My paint skills are off the chart.

@minxomat This is incredibly accurate.

닥쳐

I "wrote" a userscript that makes this effortless

translate: 닥쳐
(from Korean) Shut the fuck up
@minxomat ಠ_ಠ That's not nice.

No. 닥쳐 is just "shut up".

STFU would be 아가리 닥쳐

translate: 아가리 닥쳐
(from Korean) Baby Lee shut the fuck up
...Baby Lee?

Here

Google is not good with korean.

@minxomat Are you Korean?

No, I'm still german.

9:53 PM
@minxomat The SE translate uses Bing, not Google.
@minxomat You can be ethnically Korean but live in Germany.

I am a native German. Born & raised. But I (learn/) speak korean.

That's neat! What's the occasion for learning Korean? Just for fun?

business.

I studied Japanese because my grandpa was born in Japan (but in a Tatar community).
Do you do consulting?

I spend a lot of time in Taiwan (where everyone speaks chinese obviously) but very few do speak english. So I learned Korean because their Korean happens to be better than their english ..

...Why don't you just learn Chinese?

My girlfriend speaks better Mandarin than most chinese folks (she teaches German in China).
> just learn Chinese?
Are you nuts?

Yes, but that's irrelevant.
4

@AlexA. That's debatable

@minxomat He's batty.

9:58 PM
@DanTheMan That I'm nuts or that my being nuts is irrelevant to my recommendation of learning Mandarin?

Korean is really simple. Apart from having the most logical alphabet (IMHO), you can just throw words in a sentence in any order and it's still valid :)

Incidentally, I have a friend whose last name is literally "Batty". He has, of course, made jokes about this often.

@DanTheMan That's not nice.

@DanTheMan Here, take this: 병신아!

10:02 PM
translate: 병신아!
(from Korean) Asshole!
Also not nice.

@AlexA. That's not nice.

les balls des vices

Apart from being a slightly incorrect translation.

<funpolice> I know this chatroom is a fun, quirky environment that largely tolerates swearing, but we should avoid swearing at other people, even in other languages. </funpolice>

I want to make an add-on for Firefox that would translate text that you type into a bunch of different languages on your command.

10:05 PM
@DanTheMan Wouldn't that just be embedded Google Translate?

@DanTheMan Sounds like there are already dozens of plugins that do exactly that.
(I dunno tho)

I would assume there are.

> swearing at other people, even in other languages
You know, "boy" and "mouth" are also swear words in Korean.

I'm going to make a text-redactor that replaces random runs of text with black rectangles XD

@minxomat No kidding? What words do you use to refer to young males and the facial oriface for eating?

10:09 PM
It would do stuff like turn hello into bonjour, hola, zdravo, dia duit, salam

@AlexA. Slightly different pronunciation.

translate: salam
(from Malay) Salam
@DanTheMan What language is "salam" supposed to be?

It was from Azerbaijani

Like 아가리 means mouth, but is a slang swear word. 입 is the proper word for mouth

I find this odd, though that may just be due to my cultural ignorance.

10:11 PM
There's something like this in German, too.

@DanTheMan It's similar to the Tatar word.

10:55 PM
The what word?

Tatar
The Tatar language (татар теле, татарча, tatar tele, tatarça, تاتار تيلی) is a Turkic language spoken by Volga Tatars mainly located in modern Tatarstan, Bashkortostan and Nizhny Novgorod Oblast. It should not be confused with the Crimean Tatar language, to which it is remotely related but with which it is not mutually intelligible. == Geographic distributionEdit == Tatar language is spoken in Russia (about 5.3 million people), Ukraine, China, Finland, Turkey, Uzbekistan, the United States of America, Romania, Azerbaijan, Israel, Kahahstan, Georgia, Lithuania, Latvia, Finland and other countries...

I'm not sure whether to be upset or relieved that no one has paid any attention to my CJam string printer
@DanTheMan Hello is different in French based on the formality of the situation
I also know in a lot of languages (French and Greek at least since I know them) the formal greeting is usually either good morning or good night so it would have to take time into account

Oh.
Is my diagram correct? (Brain isn't working properly right now.)
    (a,b)
      v_
     /| `-_
    / |H   `-_
   /__|_______`-_
  ^    B          < (e,f)
(c,d)

H = |b-d|
B = |c-e|
A = HB/2

11:22 PM
You seem to assume d = f.

quartataRTTTL, or Ring Tone Text Transfer Language is a music format that was invented by Nokia in the dawn of time when dinosaurs roamed the land. I have started a bounty on this, please come and make some pretty music

11:52 PM
hi

Bonsoir

@PhiNotPi Hello

I'm starting to regret spending 100 of my hard-earned rep on that bounty

11:55 PM
Ah well I want there to be better answers. I thought that challenge was really cool and it makes me sad that there are only two answers

I know what you mean

I'm working on my bitcoin controller. Right now I have a fancy graph: koth-phinotpi.rhcloud.com/runkoth.pl?BitcoinTrading=view

And I added an answer.

@quartata Why, did you lose site privileges?

@AlexA. No

11:56 PM
Then why does it matter? :P

It's so shiny..
I was close to 1k rep too
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I was going to make a Help WarDoq answer as a publicity stunt thing heh

XD
(Oh, I crossed the 1k border :D :D :D)

@quartata ಠ_ಠ

Well you beat me too it (although you used HQ9+ instead)

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Nice work!

11:57 PM
Actually, H9+.
@AlexA. Thanks :D

@AlexA. If you don't like it go complain to Dennis. I was going to make the song pretty at least...

Hey, "Anhem" is a good song.

No I'm not saying yours isn't pretty
I'm just responding to his ಠ_ಠ

Code Review.SE is stealing me..... I just answered my first code review...
