01:00 - 19:0019:00 - 23:00

1:05 AM
I just spent 8 hours updating my operating system from OS X 10.9 to 10.10. It took my girlfriend 30 minutes to update her computer. :/

lol
Old computer versus new?

Yeah.
Mine's from 2011 and hers is from 2014.

Wow. Three years (two Moore's-Law doublings) and time is cut by a factor of 16.

Her computer is also a lot nicer than mine (which is still pretty nice IMHO).

I spent a day trying to upgrade to dual boot linux, and now my PC is in the mail on its way back to Dell.

1:15 AM
Computers suck.

(Brand new, but a 2013 model.)

What are you using in the interim?

An HP laptop
windows 8.1

Have you tried to set up dual boot on it?

Why would I want 2 bricked laptops?

1:22 AM
Well is this one yours or are you borrowing it? :P

borrowing from my parents, if that makes sense
The Dell is mine to wreck, but this one isn't.

I don't know why borrowing it from your parents wouldn't make sense.
But yeah, probably shouldn't brick your parents' computer.

Aside from this adventure, I honestly can't remember the last time I heard someone had bricked their laptop. Phone or tablet, sure, but I thought the OS installation process had gotten pretty smooth in the last decade or so.
Something must have gone terribly wrong somehow.

Mine ended up okay, it just took a long time.
I doubt Phi's issue was user error.
Installation process halting with error code 2: Phi != Pi
4

I'm not saying it was, just saying that I thought more failsafes were in place now so that it just didn't happen as often.

1:27 AM
Right

I guess I'm also saying the odds of it also happening to his parents' computer are slim. Go for it! :P

That's also what I meant
>.>

I was following the standard installation process... "click and drag for how much disk space you want to have" "what country are you in" "various progress bars" etc.... then the screen went completely black and the mouse pointer was flickering. Completely unresponsive to every button. My reaction: "oh no"

Seems like an appropriate response.

Idk, sounds a little too nonchalant for me.

1:31 AM
Then I was like... I guess I have to press the power button. "Please remove installation medium and press enter" then darkness

You did check the box that said "I have read the terms, etc", right? If you try to click through without reading them, it'll brick your laptop ;)
It's right there in the terms you didn't read.

Part of the fine print is that they get to sell all of your personal information to advertisers and brick your laptop should you refuse the terms.

The next thing that happened was me knocking on my suitemate's door and saying "I just bricked my laptop!" and his reaction was "the whole f*cking thing??!!" and I was like "the whole thing!!"

Sounds right. Denial, then Anger. Bargaining comes next.

I read that as "soulmate" rather than "suitemate."

1:37 AM
> We become lost in a maze of “If only…” or “What if…” statements. We want life returned to what is was; we want our loved one restored.

And then I started using my phone to google ways to fix my BIOS so that I could at least boot from live media or something. I started to think that I should give removing the CMOS battery a shot. So me and my suitemate spent some time removing the back panel of my laptop (he went out and bought a special screwdriver).

Yep, that fits.
Also, was the special screwdriver sonic by any chance? I'm sure that would have done the trick.

Did it also happen to be a hedgehog?

We were watching an instructional video, and eventually the video got to the point of "remove the optical drive" and then we were like "this is probably a bad idea"

Sonic the Screwdriver

1:42 AM
T_T

So, we reassembled the laptop and called it a night.
This all happened between the hours of 11pm and 2am.

So the next stage (Depression) hit the next day, right?
> The loss of a loved one is a very depressing situation, and depression is a normal and appropriate response. To not experience depression after a loved one dies would be unusual.

Yeah, that was the day when I realized how screwed I was without a functioning computer.

Yeah, the SE mobile app is great and all, but it's just not the same.

That and doing my online math homework in the library.

1:45 AM
Well, it sounds like you made it through into Acceptance now. I'm sorry for your loss, but at least you're doing okay.
> We will never like this reality or make it OK, but eventually we accept it. We learn to live with it. It is the new norm with which we must learn to live.

And then the whole thing coincided with a weekend during which my parents were planning to visit me anyways, so now I got an HP.

Rather than dual booting you could just replace the OS.

With DOS 5.1.

or the original Mac OS

Anyone want another challenge race?

No
We just want you to post a challenge

@Calvin'sHobbies sure :P

Nvm, he does ^

Hmm, but you mods could delete my challenge anyway if you started losing...

We would never do such a thing... right @AlexA.? Right?
<_< >_>

3:11 AM
>.> yeah... <.<

see, very convincing

@Doorknob But if you want, deal is we both write a challenge asap and the highest voted one wins.

Ah. That sounds fun, I thought you meant one of your informal chat-challenges though ^.^

Plus (maybe) every 5 min between the original posts counts as another vote to the earlier poster.

I have to go to sleep soon, but that does sound like a fun thing to do some time

3:14 AM
Soon ≠ now though

Soon = in a few minutes

A few minutes is all you need to successfully craft a challenge though

Do I have to write a full spec in 5 minutes? D:

Yes >:D
I say, not being a part of this at all

@Doorknob No, just if you post your say 15 min before me then you get 3 extra points
I guess (no one really competed besides me last time I tried this :P)

3:16 AM
also, no fair, Calvin can just pull a challenge idea out of his magical hat (I'm assuming that's how he somehow manages to come up with so many unique and amazing challenges)

It's a ten-gallon hat

Oh I see what you're talking about
Nice, thanks for the 2 bytes, @Dennis. :)

Don't mention it.

I already did though... It's in my post body, two revision notes, and now the chat transcript...

Q: Complement a Minesweeper Board

Calvin's HobbiesMinesweeper is a popular computer game that you have probably wasted time playing where you try to reveal the cells that are mines in a rectangular grid based on hints of how many neighboring mines each non-mine cell has. And in case you haven't played it, do so here. A nifty mathematical fact a...

5:17 AM
Are there any other mathy words that mean some sort of opposite besides inverse, converse, complement, and conjugate? (Reciprocal, reverse, and negative too I suppose.)

None come to mind off the top of my head.
What context?

Just thinking randomly

5:35 AM
@Calvin'sHobbies The prefixes a- and anti- can have that meaning in some mathematical terms.

@Dennis Ah yes. Belian groups are groups with an anticommutative pair of elements.

Hahaha. I was thinking about symmetric, asymmetric and antisymmetric relations.

@Calvin'sHobbies How about "transposed"? Or "flipped", but that doesn't sound very mathy.

Contrapositive...
(a very specific kind of opposite, that is)
Anyway, 'night y'all. (I like how I can use accents I don't know when I'm on the internet)

6:01 AM
@Dennis Gonna explain your Minesweeper answer? (I usually try not to upvote until then.)

6:41 AM
@Calvin'sHobbies Done.

the "Don't google “google”" question got to +25 overnight? :O

Six hours with nobody chatting? Wow, and it's not even a Monday.

Crazy

that's like 1/4th of an entire day
but there's still 14 people in the room

Well, in the room isn't necessarily "in the room".
I'm pretty much always in here because I generally have a tab open at home, regardless of where I actually am.

There's one way to find out: ping everybody and see who answers.

2:18 PM
I'm not sure even that's the best. I get pings on my phone even when I'm out.

Shh I'm lurking because I'm busy learning a new esolang: x86 assembly

Lurking and busy? Good luck with that :D

I've been wanting to learn an esolang called Python.

Eww, I hear they did something funky with whitespace in that one.

It's partially based off of Whitespace.

2:21 PM
I'm writing my own programming language :D
Attempting to, rather

I was writing a language, but I got "permanently distracted."

I'll be back in a bit. Going to gym

2:44 PM
Nevermind, we aren't doing anything today
Should I go ahead and post this challenge?

It's not really related to the paradox, though.

It's symbolistic of the rotations/translations required to assemble an identical ball.

3:02 PM
Is it? Maybe I'm misreading it, but it looks more like a simple ROT-like cipher on the inner contents.

Q: The kitten command

TheNumberOneA kitten is much like a cat. Some of the main differences are cuteness, lack of intelligence, and size. Similarly, the cat command is different from the kitten command. Fortunately, there is only one difference in this case. In the kitten command, all uppercase letters are replaced with lowercase...

Noo, I liked the neuron

You appear to have 2 too many vowels in that, @Beta.

Man, people in the UK will just throw an extra vowel onto anything, won't they? :P

@AlexA. I was pretty sure that it was wrong
My biology teacher likes to add it in :P

@Geobits Not as bad as in France though!

4:59 PM
I don't know France well enough to comment on that.
I'll just assume that since you're on the internet, it's true.

@AlexA. Wait, two vowels?! Which half-brained people spell it nuron?

There's an extra vowel in 'Noo' also...

^
@Geobits A wise decision.

Ohh I see
You guys are too sharp for me

You appear to have 1 too many consonants in that, @Beta.

5:01 PM
And not enough punctuation in any of it.

weeeell look whos picking on the poor decaying particle :(

I don't even know where to start with that sentence.

Damn, I forgot to add spelling mistakes. D:

No you didn't.

5:04 PM

What did I misspell?

"well" and "who's"

I can see arguing for 'well', since it could just be an exaggerated dialectal spelling. 'whos' is just wrong, though :P

Who's was a punctuation error...

Missing (or misplaced) apostrophes are spelling mistakes. Ask any kid who's been marked down on a spelling quiz.

Q: The Banach–Tarski Paradox

Zach GatesThe Banach–Tarski paradox states that, given a ball in 3‑dimensional space, you can decompose the ball into a finite number of point subsets. These disjoint sets of points can then be reassembled to produce two copies of the initial ball. You would then, theoretically, have two identical balls. ...

6:03 PM
@FrenchPeople Does forté mean anything in French?
So for example: Les maths et les sciences sont mes forté

@BetaDecay "Strength", sort of. It's what you're good at.

translate: forté
(from French) Forte

It means a strongpoint

Yeah. Means forte.

6:04 PM
@BetaDecay Essentially "Math and science are my strongpoints."

@ZachGates That's perfect, thanks :D

It's worth noting that I know practically no French, but I saw a Foxtrot comic strip several years ago that had a pun on this, so my mom explained it to me and ever since I've remembered it. :P

I'm only in French 2 :P

What does that mean? :P

6:08 PM
@BetaDecay French 2? The second course of French, taught in public school.

Oh haha. I guess I could have guessed that
I'm on my second year of French GCSE

GCSE?

It's a UK thing

@MartinBüttner You around?
Oh, @Phi are you from the UK?

@AlexA. General Certificate of Secondary Education

6:10 PM
No, I'm just "culturally informed"

I'm neither culturally informed nor from the UK

They're pretty important exams. You need them to get into 6th form where you do A levels.
And A levels are used to get into university

Nvm. I saw a flag that got validated and I thought it was because it had the word "tit" but I think maybe it was flagged for being just generally not nice.

@BetaDecay Your education system is gibberish.

There's more stages to education in UK than America. IIRC, the GCSE is like the freshman and sophomore years of American high school

6:11 PM
I stand by what I said.

With A-levels being like the junior and senior years

@AlexA. Better than the billions of different schools that Americans have to go through

Now my Google search at work is littered with "tit alternate meaning", "tit for tat", "tit definition"

@Rainbolt Would you prefer your boss walk in on you Googling tits or looking at llamas?

Tits

6:14 PM
Those are really cute.

^^ That's a pair of Great Tits
2

Exquisite

@BetaDecay ಠ_ಠ

@BetaDecay Is it really forté? I thought it was forts?

Is no one going to mention Boobies? Blue Footed Boobies, I mean.

6:16 PM
translate fr: forte
(from Italian) forte

"forte" is Italian

wtf

Oh. Alex beat me to it.

@flawr You tell me :D

There's two meanings to "forte"

6:16 PM
@ZachGates Actually, the mod translation tool beat you to it. I had no idea. :P

one is 40?

Fortee

its like when you shout out 40

@AlexA. Darn

in rage

6:17 PM
Do you pronounce things differently when you shout?

@Optimizer A french trying to shout 40 in english?

better. an Italian

"it's not my forte" with "forte" meaning "thing I am good at" vs. "forte" in music meaning "loud"

different etymologies too
the first came from French, the second is Italian
But the same Latin roots

awww... it's extinct. :(

;-;

Its okay, @AlexA. has Great Tits now!

RIP Great Uncle Choiseul.

6:20 PM
What a beautiful booby.

Oh that's the SO mod turned employee, bluefeet.

who the f is naming these birds :D
give that man a badge!

And you know it's a guy too.

@Optimizer "Good Question" badge? "Suffrage" badge? Which badge? I'm dying to know!

6:21 PM
Taxonomist, obviously.

Ah, found the message using the back button. "6 year old me was less of a tit than you."
Hardly seems flaggable but I guess PPCG has lower standards.

@Rainbolt You've since become a bird?

You mean the guy who originally posted it?

In a struggle to become a better tit, he became a Great Tit

6:23 PM
All it took was some support.

XD
@AlexA. what kind of support are we talking about here ? ;)

Emotional support, obviously.

A crane

@Rainbolt Who would star something like that?
@ZachGates Bring what back? >.>

@AlexA. Someone who doesn't want a bunch of birds on his work monitor

6:27 PM
@AlexA. That tag, of course.

What tag? Taxonomist?

@Rainbolt I don't know anyone like that.

I am waiting for the first question with that tag.
PS: Have you ever heard about the Fried Egg Jellyfish?
Cotylorhiza tuberculata is a species of jellyfish, also known as the Mediterranean jelly or fried egg jellyfish. It is commonly found in the Mediterranean Sea, Aegean Sea and Adriatic Sea. It can reach 35 cm in diameter. It seems that this jellyfish's sting has very little or no effect on humans. This is an endangered species. == DescriptionEdit == C. tuberculata is usually less than 17 cm wide. The smooth, elevated dome is surrounded by a gutter-like ring. The marginal lappets are elongated and subrectangular. Each mouth-arm bifurcates near its base and branches several times. In addition to...

@Rainbolt so you would prefer llamas!!

6:29 PM
@flawr Now that's my kind of jellyfish!

Interesting. Wikipedia oneboxes have the css class "ob-wikipedia-text" instead of "onebox"
So I can get rid of images but keep the wikipedia articles

I didn't know until last week that there was a https://www.stackoverflow.com

> Why do the Japanese cartoon characters get nosebleeds all the time?

6:37 PM
ELIBD

I have a guess because I watch a lot of anime

Its called anime. not Japanese cartoon
@Rainbolt secretly, we all know it ;)

Their blood pressure raises and that causes their nose to bleed?

So all japanese cartoons are called anime? I thought anime was just a certain race species type of cartoons.

and this question explains what type of animes the OP watches usually :P

6:38 PM
Oh I was answering the wrong question

@BetaDecay -15

>! Spoiler test.
Why the hell are there no spoiler tags for the chat??

@flawr what is that message?? its all white

I want to know why arousal is linked to nosebleeds (in anime) but I can't really google that from work

@Rainbolt heart rate increases -> high blood pressure and blah blah

@Optimizer I understand now

My workplace suggests the weirdest cookoffs. My options are:
- bacon
- queso
- chili
- other
so i picked other and suggested chicken.

I had no idea that Instagram oneboxed...

This is for lunch for the entire company. What kind of lunch is "queso"?

That's a big cup of coffee if those are hula hoops.
@Rainbolt I'm gonna guess something cheese-based :P

6:44 PM
And bacon... we tried that and nobody could move after lunch
Well, we did queso and everyone actually made "cheese dip" (queso in the US)
And that was our lunch. Soda and cheese dip
2

That's... terrible.

At least when we did bacon, we had bacon sushi, bacon wrapped chicken, etc.

Sounds nutritional :D

Chicken just seems like an ingredient that everyone can get behind. If you can't cook chicken then oh well. You wasted a dollar and move on to the next chicken breast.

Well you'd think people could be more creative with something as broad as "cheese", too.

6:50 PM
Was it just a one-off?
Yes :P

Hmmm... I can make chicken cordon bleu for about 15 dollars if he goes with chicken.
I guess I can make chicken cordon bleu if he goes with cheese
I guess I can make bacon wrapped chicken cordon bleu if he chooses bacon. Wow the possibilities are endless!

Just swap the normal ham in the chicken for bacon for that version. No wrapping required :)

^

The ham is precooked though. I'd have to do something similar with the bacon
Nobody likes half cooked stretchy bacon

I'd say cook until crispy, then bacon-bits it and spread as an even layer. It'll soften up a bit while cooking.

6:54 PM
I was just thinking that would taste awesome

Weave strips of bacon together into a sheet

I could cheat and buy bacon bits

That would definitely be cheating :D
But then you don't get the pleasure of eating the "extra" bacon as you're cooking it.

But isn't that what cooking is about? Finding ways to cheat so that you can make the same meal a hundred more times for your family?
I only see two options. Have a kid and "allow" them to do the tedious part, or cheat.

I wish. I still haven't found a good way to cheat the mac and cheese they decided I need to make every time we get together.
It's not hard to make or anything, but making the cheese sauce is a bit tedious.

6:57 PM
@Geobits Just use Velveeta

That's one way of convincing them I shouldn't make it again I guess.

Add the cheese with milk and butter. ezpz.
cheezy

Introduce them to Kraft Macaroni and Cheese, which is better than any homemade or restaurant made mac and cheese I have ever had.

When I was a little kid I tried to make Easy Mac but I forgot the water and I just microwaved a bowl of dry noodles. It caught fire.

@mbomb007 Except then it's velveeta, not cheese ;)

6:58 PM
@AlexA. When I was an intern, my other intern buddy did that.

@AlexA. My brother caught a bag of popcorn on fire in the microwave once. He still hasn't lived that one down.

At work

See, I had an excuse, being a little kid and all.

@Geobits Velveeta is more cheese than any other cheese, since it's multiple kinds of leftover cheeses mixed together.

Have you ever had Cordon bleu with a sweet apple-something filling instead of cheese? It is fanfuckingtastic
