exec in a function never works out

def h(x):
 print(x)
 exec("x=x+1")
 print(x)
 return x

print(h(1))
prints only 1's
indeed, it works totally fine outside a function

actually, it works in Python 2 lol

@MartinBüttner At least it wasn't just me that noticed that. I thought about saying something when I saw it, but figured it would sound petty coming from me ;)

:D
I know what you mean...

Wow, Box Muller's as short as erfinv, basically

yeah, it's not too long
the amount of answers I get on these challenges where the authors know they are invalid, but don't fix or delete them is crazy.

2:54 AM
Really? How so?

well I don't know, but there are several answers on #1 where the OP is aware of the answer being incorrect (as mentioned in the comments), and now also the first one on #2

One day this will come out and Python will be a fair bit golfier... (hopes)

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

DJ McMayhemBrick your boss's computer So the idea for my challenge has a little bit of a story behind it. You are a double agent. You work for company A, but company B has hired you to do software design. Company B is a giant evil company, and it's your job to take them down. So you decide to crash compan...

@Doorknob the sidebar is giving away how a superping works :P
(well not that it would work for anyone else... but still... seems buggy)
can you ping anyone with their user ID?
@59776

@@112128 nope

nope
@Doorknob is this worth a bug report on MSE?
@aditsu thanks for adding permalinks btw
also, remind me, did you plan to add UTF-8 bytecount to 0.6.4?

you're welcome, and I'm not planning that yet

should I add a ticket, just in case?

sure
do you often use non-ascii characters?

7:20 PM
reasonably often

7:36 PM
@MartinBüttner Only moderators can.

@ProgramFOX well I didn't mean superping
I meant, someone I can ping with their name anyway

ah
then I don't think you can

yeah I figured :D

are you aware of the sidebar thing being known?
(that superpings show as user IDs)

7:39 PM
I've never seen it before, so no. I'll search on meta.

I tried finding it, but no luck
if you can't find it either, I'll post another bug report

same here, no results

Q: Superpings don't show user name in sidebar

Martin BüttnerDoorknob just superpinged someone in our chat. The message got starred and ended up in the sidebar. However, the superping syntax and user ID weren't replaced with the normal ping and user name there (as they are in the actual message): Click for larger version I don't think it's a big deal, b...

By the way, even if you can superping, that wouldn't ping you (which you wanted to try, I think). I see that you tried to ping yourself with your codegolf id, but then you'd have to use @@31414@codegolf.stackexchange.com, because if you don't provide a site, it uses your chat.SE id.

@@88521 like this ?
I did right .. why is it not pinging/ converting to name .

@@126828 No, like this, because 126828 is your chat.SE id. But you are not a moderator, so you cannot superping.

lol
I did correctly only then for u
that is your chat.se id

@MartinBüttner Heh, whoops... edited, hopefully he still gets the ping

Hm, after your edit, the star is still yellow for me on the starboard, but not anymore next to the message.

another bug report incoming

I've seen that happen a few times
@ProgramFOX this one's for you ;)

Try refreshing?
Err, don't do that yet

Take a screenshot, then refresh :P

yeah, that works, but now I cannot take the screenshot anymore :/
I refreshed before thinking about what I was doing.

or dork-noob

@PhiNotPi Having read a bit about variants, it might be more interesting (and probably faster to run) to make it one big game and require the guesses to be modulo some number.
@Doorknob Shoddy work by the builders.

Say, @Peter, what happened to the Knishops?

@PeterTaylor If the game is played as a large group, there will be a lot more randomness involved.
A single uniformly random thrower will be able to make the whole sum (mod N) be uniformly random.

this sounds like an interesting challenge:

Q: Calculate area under a polyline

user25235Consider the following code: tmp = {{0, 0}, {1, 1}, {2, 1}, {3, 2}, {1, 0.5}}; ListLinePlot[tmp, Filling -> Axis] Is there any easy way to compute filled area? Edit: Actual data consists of thousands of points, so some analytical solution would be the best

the desired area is this:
Here is a more elaborate example: {{0, 0}, {1, 1}, {2, 1}, {3, 2}, {1, 0.5}, {2.5, 1}, {1.5, 1.5}}

Working on a Morra controller right now.
The polyline area challenge seems like a good idea.

@MartinBüttner I forgot about that one. I've got some others on the back burner too.
@PhiNotPi Not if N is larger than the number the thrower is allowed to pick. But I get your point.
@MartinBüttner Area of a polygon? IIRC it's basically a simple fold. (And yes, it is the area of a polygon with a suitable winding rule: it just requires extending both ends down to the axis and then joining them).

@PeterTaylor I just noticed ;) (and answered)

@PeterTaylor it might still be an interesting challenge though if it hasn't been done
@PeterTaylor Yeah, I remember you had some combinatorial OEIS sequence a while back which never made it to main.
(or did you mean other ideas, that aren't even in the sandbox yet?)

9:51 PM
Almost done with a Java-only Morra controller.
I think there was somebody here who said they could write a language wrapper for it.

@Rainbolt ^
he probably won't see it before Monday though

@MartinBüttner There's the elliptic curve cryptography one in the sandbox too.

10:10 PM
wow, that's been there for longer than I've been an active member :D

I think it would be neat to sort through the entire sandbox.
I'm sure there's some very interesting idea in there. The problem is that they'll be on page 20 or whatever where nobody sees them.

I looked through the last few pages once, but I didn't find too much really interesting, I think... but I'm sure there are some gems in there

I've gotten the Morra controller to work when the submissions are Java classes.

11:17 PM
The Morra KOTH could be posted today, if I decided not to have a wrapper.
Or, the wrapper could be added later.
