12:04 AM
@lyxal additionally, if these are courses intended for like third or fourth year, there's also the fact that to the target students, university starts to become more of a burden/dredge
first and second year is fun, and the novelty hasn't worn off
it's around third year that it starts to be less fun and more tedious
Add in a few group projects and it becomes very easy to see lectures as just another chore
very lucky that here at least, workshop attendance usually isn't compulsory for non-first-year courses
I say usually because there's the occasional second/third year course that pulls de-facto mandatory attendance through marks :p
@lyxal I lived a 10 minute walk from my class
And if you really do need to commute you can find a quiet room on campus to do work between classes
assuming you have enough time to get established and then actually get focused on the work
@emanresuA I told myself that and then I would have Discord open in lectures
I would talk here during math workshops :p
I try to avoid that
12:23 AM
TNB help I'm in a strange strange situation
I was walking down the stairs and a girl talked to me
Her phone wouldn't work and she needed to borrow mine
And then she called her dad and somehow figured out my name? And then we walked around for a while and I showed her my dorm and I'm in the lobby of her dorm now since there's a board game thing tonight
What the fuck is happening
And like she's interrogating me for details about my life. She's either very very friendly, romantically into me, or trying to get state secrets out of me
Possibly all three
I'm pretty sure she knew my entire plans for my future, saw my dorm, and walked a mile through a dark alley witht me before I realized I didn't know her name
@emanresuA That's my assumption until I get further information
Either that or she's actually Ginger
May we use some other ASCII character e.g. -/~ instead of ? (some langs have trouble using non-ASCII) — emanresu A 5 hours ago
I didn't even realize that was a Unicode overline
I thought it was an underscore on the next line up
12:42 AM
Nah, SE just added multiline comments while you were asleep
1:30 AM
I love managing to get arrows to somehow do sharp turns
it's not even visio this time
Wow
@rydwolf Yeah probably all three
@emanresuA 🤝
I definitely wish it was the worst software my university had
But not that hard
Because it would still set a fairly low bar
Visio!

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

squareroot12621ALU: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division code-golf arithmetic Challenge Given two integers \$a, b\$ in \$[0, 256)\$ and a number \$c\$ from the set \$\{0, 1, 2, 3\}\$, perform an operation corresponding to \$c\$. If \$c\$ is 0, output \$a + b \pmod{256}\$. If \$c\$ is 1, output \$a -...

@rydwolf that's most likely the IRS
do not share any further information with her
Activate the logo gushing plan
Ah, if that's how the IRS operates, no wonder I've gone this long owing like $3k without any issues :P
That just means you're still under their radar
The moment they get a slight suspicion, that's when they send out the romance plan
Get you swept up by a significant other and then get you to reveal all your tax secrets
@rydwolf this wasn't a call to her dad. This was her ringing the IRS with your phone to confirm contact and to install trojanware to harvest information from your phone
Unironically if someone asked to make a call through my phone I'd somehow manage to worry that dialing the number would put me on some scammer's call list
But I wouldn't actually articulate this and just entertain a false dichotomy between letting them physically handle my phone to dial the number and not doing anything at all
Because it would simultaneously also not occur to me that I can dial it for them, because I wouldn't want to try to think of that
and if they suggested that then maybe it would work but I would also still be too taken back by assuming they meant for me to actually physically hand it to them, so it would still be, like, extremely suspicious
Like I would be tempted to say I'm out of battery the same way I say I don't have cash when people ask me for cash in random ass parking lots, even if they literally saw me using it
*taken aback
2:19 AM
@rydwolf Some people are just nosy as fuck
@UnrelatedString you could say you're low on battery and need to call someone later
And some people will get all the information they can from you, then kill you and sew your face onto themselves and live in your house and pretend to be you to your friends and family and dog. Some might go so far as to open several bank accounts in your name
...actually yeah I guess that would make sense if my hypothetical call was to something that would, like, possibly take upwards of 20 minutes whether due to a wait or just being really involved
Thanks
Will try to keep that one handy
take that with a large handful of salt because I have no idea about what phone etiquette is
2:21 AM
Me neither :P
And I hope to never learn
You could just tell them to f off
See that is basically my intent
Or like, start loudly playing porn or something
That is not basically my intent
Coward
2:22 AM
@user real
You do not understand the courage it takes to, like, have my phone speakers on at all
If I didn't just have earbuds in then who knows what might be playing in the background without me noticing somehow
I was kidding lol, I also have my phone and laptop on mute at all times
Well for my phone I have notifications on but not media
I have my laptop muted at all times due to crippling fear of accidentally playing something
2:24 AM
I think some time when I was a tiny child I did get burned for some random ass background audio on the family desktop, but it might also just be that it personally spooked me and I couldn't figure out where it was coming from to turn it off
minimized windows :P
att
att
i could never play anything in public
@user I have alarms on but notification audio would kill me
@Redz Yeah even when I have headphones on I perdiocally take them off to make sure no noise is spilling
2:25 AM
And the alarms are also silenced if I have my watch on since the watch vibrates :P
Because I once saw a guy plug in in his headphones and then loudly play a pop song and he never realized
That secondhand cringe has stayed with me
@emanresuA I really like recordings because I can play them on 2x speed and pause whenever I want
I've never actually thought to do that, for two reasons
- It's pretty clear how different it sounds from speakers versus headphones, and at worst I can sense the difference if I turn my head
- I do not DARE take my headphones off without pausing/muting everything first
I also hate Panopto but its subtitles aren't always bad
2:27 AM
personally I go the extra mile and never use headphones
subtitles are lifesavers
Oooooh yeah wait I forgot there were some hilarious subtitles on some movie with French audio I had to watch for an art history class
Man I wish I could treat real people like videos
@user I like them in principle for this exact reason, but in practice I just... never watch them
Granted, around here you're lucky if there even are recordings
Think recordings really only started being a thing because of people quarantining for COVID and even then it was inconsistent
Like I remember some professors taking like 5 minutes at the start of class getting recording set up when and only when they knew someone in the class wasn't allowed to be there
In real life you can't be like "John, you're boring, I don't care that your brother just died, just skip to the part where you tell me whether you did the assignment or not"
2:29 AM
@UnrelatedString Yeah that was one good thing about COVID
Although I was sick once in high school (just the flu, just for a couple days) and I had to virtually attend one class
Interesting
It was incredibly awkward because the teacher set up a camera inside the class just for me and assigned one student to move the camera around the whole class
💀💀💀💀💀💀
WHY
2:30 AM
Turned my camera off after like 10 seconds because the whole class was like "Hi user"
I don't even know
Fun teacher though
I can imagine :P
I wanna clarify, the camera was on a tripod and the student rotated it for the duration of the class, they didn't carry it around the whole class
@UnrelatedString when the teacher starts talking and it's on mute
When was this?
2:31 AM
YEP LMAO
My senior year, so 2021 or 2022?
Ah okay
still kinda weird
Yup
Why have I always assumed you were older than me
Uh...because I act so very mature?
2:32 AM
TRUE
Why have I always assumed you were younger than me
Wait are you also 20 Unrelated?
Oh
2:33 AM
Old people these days
Look on the bright side you don't have to share a school with genalpha kids
@emanresuA Because I'm about as sensible as a 6-year old with a fever
@emanresuA Gen Z kids sucked too. All kids suck when they're kids
2:33 AM
@emanresuA this is the sole reason I wish I finished school ages ago
It's so surprising how nice people are as you grow older
Anyone under the age of like, 13-14, is nonsapient
Median gen Z kid seemed fairly chill, I was just bringing down the average
att
att
@user Hi user
Middle schoolers and below are complete jerks, high schoolers are slightly less jerky despite what movies depict them as, college students are pretty nice, and outside of college, people are super duper nice
@att Hi att
2:35 AM
woahhhh
Interesting
Do note that I am a college student who has had a limited number of interactions with people outside of an academic context
Gosh dang why do so many people bring dogs to local council election polling places?
There's like 5 dogs here
have you seen the people who bring macaws in
I'm sorry what.
2:38 AM
Have you seen the people who bring her caws in?
In my experience it was like
Elementary schoolers are just unhinged and immature but in a kind of neutral way
Middle schoolers half try way too hard to pretend they have all their shit together and half just actually chill
High schoolers are genuinely awful
and I have met like a single digit number of college students
att
att
are you not in college
Oh interesting
(the dogs are now barking at each other because they don't like each other it seems)
2:38 AM
@lyxal there's a group of people around where I live who have macaws and they bring them in for polling it's hilarious
That's definitely something
Single digit is an exaggeration since I'm pretty sure I've meaningfully interacted with at least 20 people through clubs alone
(the macaws)
@UnrelatedString from experience this is preeetty close to true
But it could easily only be in the double digits
att
att
2:39 AM
that's more than me (:
@lyxal macaw situations are always interesting
att
att
ime people are generally nice
There's an "auslan interpreting sign" here with two hands doing 👌 but they're rotated in such a way the first looks like a 6 and the second like a 9
@UnrelatedString Me personally, I saw kids pick on others for no reason at all in elementary school and middle school and got bullied for most of middle school. But in high school, I never saw anyone bullying anyone, and random people walking by would actually be like "Hey, you good man?" and fist bump me
2:41 AM
🫂
Either someone knew what they were doing or this is the funniest thing I've seen at election time (the 69 auslan sign)
Yeah my high school's extremely chill
@user other way at my school but more mild
There were fights occasionally but I never saw any of the gratuitous meanness you see in movies
I mostly just self isolated for the entirety of grade school but still managed to get mildly bullied in high school
2:41 AM
@user you have FIGHTS? gosh damn I want some of that in my school
(that said literally every single-sex high school here has at least some amount of lingering homophobia :\ )
High school overall still felt kinder and gentler because we didn't have PE after freshman year
But the students not so much
@emanresuA You have those? Yiiiikes
Oh yeah wait you literally JUST talked about this
... chat escaped the ) so instead of :\ ) I had homophobia :)
And here at college, it's even better. For the first time since I was a kid, I can actually speak and have my ideas heard, instead of people steamrolling me or pretending to hear what I said and then ignoring me. I can even interrupt people
Goldfish brain
PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF
@user WHAT
yoooooooo
2:43 AM
@emanresuA Wait are these like religious schools or something?
About half but all of them have issues
@Redz tbh I never saw one directly. The two that I saw had so many people around that it was impossible to see what was going on (and I'm short so I would've had to stand on someone's shoulders or something)
That's crazy
the girls' schools slightly less so, christian ones slightly more so
@user cool
@emanresuA Hate when bugs in ancient software turn you into a bigot
2:44 AM
Ugh this voting line taking so long fr
att
att
somehow i dont think i ever really came across anything in my school years
@lyxal Can't you vote by mail?
@att Did you live in a perfect vacuum?
Not unless you're registered to do so
And voting is compulsory
Is that hard to do?
No
Just takes a while
Because everyone has to vote
2:45 AM
Oh it's too late ok
Oop almost at the get your ballots table
att
att
@user yes I'm empty
@Redz My singular friend in middle school did try to start one once 💀
To clarify: yes they've tried to address this, yes all the schools I've mentioned (even the christian ones) have an official position of supporting LGBT students (although the T is the awkward one) but at the same time homosexuality and traditional gender ideals really don't go together (especially in the case of gay people / traditional masculinity)
Ended up getting suspended in high school (after we went to different high schools and never spoke again)
2:47 AM
Hey @lyxal I was an election worker, you wanna know a fun trick you can pull at the polls?
aww
@UnrelatedString sad but fair
@user tell me before it's too late :p
Stuff your ballot into the scanning machine the wrong way so it gets jammed
He's got a lot of issues and I hope he's had some space to work on them at this point
Election workers HATE this "prank"
2:47 AM
@user no scanning machines
Oh
@UnrelatedString Some people grow and change, and some people smoke toilet paper in the PE shed in primary school and never look back
true story, unfortunately
WHAT
@emanresuA people smoke toilet paper????
2:48 AM
Does that even feel good?
I doubt it
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
why the PE shed in particular
Good question
Is it like especially isolated or something
2:49 AM
Better than the PEE shed I guess
Just one person at my primary school, he got suspended for a week
One guy I knew in HS did crush up Altoids and snort them like a line of cocaine, but it was purely for the bit
@user don't you dare make that joke I still have fear of it from primary school :P
The PE shed?
2:50 AM
Probably for like equipment?
yeah, sports equipment
No I know what PE is, I meant why does Redz have nightmares?
But I imagine most equipment gets stored inside since some of it needs to be inside
@user people constantly making the mispelling joke at school
Voting done
2:50 AM
oh congratulations
are the dogs still there
@Redz ... that's relatively tame tbh
Doing very rough and very optimistic numbers, I guess I've probably interacted with, like...
15 across three semesters of conversation exercises in Russian, 30?ish people across a bunch of linguistics classes + a club, maybe as many as 10 through the autism support group, probably about 10 through the competitive programming club, ...maybe this compsci class I'm taking right now already adds up to like 27?
So I'm probably forgetting some other classes in between but that's like 72
If I forgot a *lot* it could be triple digits
I think the weirdest story I've heard of that sort at my school was that some kids had sex in some room with music equipment so it had to be kept locked afterward
what
I
what
2:51 AM
@emanresuA I have still seen much worse
the answer to "what" is in this case "the fuck"
@UnrelatedString Yeah that's exactly what they did
8
@user heard the same story at my school actually
Oh my god was it the room with the drums? Maybe we went to the same school
I've heard of sex in the bathrooms but like that's relatively normal
... for a certain value of "normal"
2:52 AM
Depends on the bathrooms
... we live in a society
I feel like music equipment rooms are probably like the #1 place for hiding shit
The first floor bathrooms at my school were filthy
Because there really aren't that many places in a school
Were the bathrooms on any other floors not??
att
att
depends on the layout
2:53 AM
The second floor bathrooms didn't have piss all over the floor, and the third floor bathrooms only had piss on the floor around the urinals and in the toilet stalls
@emanresuA I've heard of people being aware of the possibility but I've never heard of it actually happening
@user Whoa
Nice LMAO
Only rumours yeah but it must've happened at some point
I think the higher floor bathrooms were used more for vaping than pooping
@user don't have three floors in my school so definitely not the same school
Yeah probably
2:54 AM
@user that too
Funny story: I used to think it was the stink of poop I was smelling in those bathrooms. Found out after I came to college that nope, it's weed
I assume straight couples wouldn't do it without planning way ahead to make sure to do it in the middle of a class period, but gay people proooobably existed here too
@user Fascinating LMAO
I actually still don't know what weed smells like
does it smell like cigarettes or something?
And also managed to get out of grade school like right before the bathroom vape apocalypse
I mean teenagers are comfortable making out in public spaces while others awkwardly hurry past so like it's definitely something that would've happened
2:56 AM
...teenagers do that?
@Redz No, didn't smell like smoke, just smelled really bad
The kids at my high school did idk
fair
But with straight couples in particular, someone would have to be going into the wrong bathroom
And that would get some looks
@UnrelatedString gender neutral bathrooms exist
or at least like the wheelchair accessible ones
As single rooms with lockable doors
2:57 AM
yeah
...I guess one could go in, close the door and not lock it, and wait there long enough that nobody would notice that they didn't come out before their partner goes in
@Redz Damn ok
There was actually one CGCC user who went to the same high school as me and the same university too
That's probably what happens most of the time actually
I assume he's graduated by now though
@user woah
2:58 AM
Because it's not like people are just staring the door down
@user WHAT
Nice
Yeah he recognized my high school based on my GitHub profile and I recognized our university based on his
@user Technically same (because I brought him here :p)
@emanresuA Nice
I've been TRYING
Except not that hard ever since I started the whole anime pfp thing
2:59 AM
I don't want people irl to come here at all because the separation between TNB/the Discords and real life lets me be myself here while acting like a serious mature guy irl
More like tempting fate with it :P
@user relatable

same as the difference between user and att
@UnrelatedString If they judge you so much for being a weeb that it gets to be a problem, maybe they aren't such great people after all
Or they might tease you at first but then you introduce them to some good anime and they're like "No I still think this is shit but okay I'll stop being a jerk"
The worst people I've met here are the only ones I ended up being honest about it with and I wasn't even the one they actually teased about it
honestly 90% of people I know with unsettling levels of weebness are cooler than the average person

But in retrospect, expecting them to read THAT may have been my real error

now see the real problem was calling them Rococo bytes
everyone knows they're actually Rokoko bytes

11:08 AM

Okay TNB, time for a radvylf-relationship-debrief
So, 19:45, I'm walking down the stairs, see her, let her borrow my phone, business as usual
We chat a bit on the way out of the building, and we have a lot in common. I'm in the dorm she wanted as her first choice, so we somehow end up deciding to go there together
So we get lost oj the way and eventually get there, then sit and talk in the common area for hours
Then we decide to go get food at the only 24h place on campus, which is in the Mellon Institute, which is pretty far off campus
We can't badge in; so we just wander around for a while. We end up back on campus, and talk for a while longer in one of the weird little academic buildings
Finally at like 1 AM we decide to go home, so I walk her to her dorm, but we get distracted on the way and play a card game for an hour or so
Oh, I totally forgot, there was a board game night at her rez hall until like 23:00 somewhere in there
And we talked for hours about our whole lives, politics, family, future plans, etc. And she was leaning up against me a lot
Wait so yeah chronologically this would mean we walked to my dorm twice
Which yeah I think we did, once to just show her around and once to talk for hours
Sounds promising. Did you make any plans to see each other again?
11:27 AM
Yeah she was super worried we'd just never talk again so we planned like five things lol
