@DLosc So, this comment didn't age well
My laptop no longer works just fine, the hard drive died as of September-ish
So now I am using Windows 11 on my personal laptop, my work laptop, and very soon will be on my new desktop
And while it no longer has some of the problems I've seen other people mention, I am still pretty annoyed about some smaller glitches, like how some of the taskbar icons will randomly disappear sometimes
Or how there's no desktop toolbar anymore
I recommend power toys
It adds some really cool stuff that makes up for some of the quirks of win11
Might look into that, thanks
@DLosc wdym there's no desktop toolbar?
Well, more specifically, which desktop toolbar do you mean?
Huh, mustn't've ever used that then when I used win 10
01:06
I think it was opt-in in Win 10. I used it a fair amount because I kept certain things on my desktop and it was nice to have them available in two clicks. So far, I've worked around it by pinning more things to the taskbar and/or start menu. Not sure if there's an easy equivalent for things that are files and not programs.
Powertoys run (from power toys, obviously) should help alleviate that a little
It's not two click, but it does provide a spotlight like experience
Where you can easily search for files along with a whole bunch of other stuff
Hmm, maybe I can Favorite those files--then I can get there in two or three clicks using File Explorer. Still not ideal because it results in an extra File Explorer window, but not bad.
I kinda like that Notepad has tabs now, but I wish when I double-clicked a .txt file that it would open in its own window by default. As it is, if I try to open a file but have Notepad open on a different desktop, the file opens as a tab in that Notepad instance, usually (but not always!) switching me to the other desktop.
It also stores unsaved files too
So like if you open a new tab and start writing, close notepad and reopen, it'll still be there
And you don't get asked "do you want to save" when closing notepad
Speaking of notepad it has only just occurred to me I should look into whether it's possible to change the default font for notepad to be comic mono
Because while I have it set in vs code, and that's what I primarily use, I still do use notepad from time to time
01:28
@lyxal Yes, I have noticed and appreciate that. IIRC, Win 10 Notepad did remember the contents of an unsaved file if it restarted (e.g. to do updates).
hot take: HTML+CSS is the best GUI library/framework for the web and desktop
not saying electron is, just HTML and CSS
the one thing HTML lacks is reusability
which can probably be fixed by some sort of templating
i say this as a not-web developer tho

order don't matter
06:28
@Seggan I agree, but try to use CSS sparingly.
06:41
@Seggan It's really just CSS pulling 99% of the weight there. CSS is both flexible and has sane defaults that make it easy to quickly prototype stuff.
I think the only notable other GUI framework that is good is Flutter, but it's clearly heavily inspired by HTML/CSS
QT uses CSS but is such pain in other ways to make it worse overall
React native... tries

@l4m2 does this "function" count? from OEIS import A048645
@Neil valid
What languages solve it shortest by 0=>10, 7=>12, x=>x?
JavaScript, 15 bytes: x=>x-7?x||10:12
JavaScript, x=>x-6?x+1:12
+1 seems shorter than a map in most langs
08:37
@Themoonisacheese It doesn't work without JavaScript so it's a bit pointless

Q: The "Graphing" Calculator 2... A Higher Power

NatelolzzzA sequel to my earlier post, when working with quadratic graphs, you can use Y=MX²+NX+C to calculate the shapes of a quadratic curve... but can you code-golf it? I/O is similar to my last post, but the program should now take M, N, C, V, and then returns the first V worth of whole x values. V wil...

There is an ever increasing number of dogs at my work. Now there are like 3 walking around
Do you work at a kennel, by any chance?

@mousetail'he-him' are they good dogs, Brent?
Yes, but one is so big I'm afraid she'll knock my desk over
Also another one peed on the wall
I think my only option is to bring my own dog who can chase the other dogs away from my desk

Q: Right sidebar box missing padding under headers

cocomacThere should probably be padding under the headers - can it be re-added? I'm using Firefox on Windows 11, and I can reproduce this both signed in and when signed out (with userscripts & uBlock Origin disabled).

This has also affected the controls on the right hand side of the flag dashboard (TL chatroom message link: chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/66734554#66734554 ) — Spevacus ♦ 11 hours ago

Q: The whois feature in TL is currently broken

Journeyman GeekThere's a feature that lists and summons mods for a specific site on the teacher's lounge. Currently, it also lists staff with diamonds, which breaks inter site moderator collaboration. Here's an example command for reference. It also occasionally seems to fail completely. Could this be fixed ple...

@pxeger I have updated Charcoal but it's not urgent, just a fix to some AST output

Time for my second animal story of the day
During our afternoon walk me and my coworkers come across a fenced field with some goats hanging out near it
@mousetail'he-him' upgoats or downgoats?
I think the goats are supposed to be inside the fence but they just effortlessly jump over it or crawl under
I think when they jump over the fence they are upgoats and when they crawl under they are downgoats?
When they cross the fence they always to it all together, they all go chill outside for a while then crawl back in
sounds like the fence shouln't even be there at all
It might be to prevent humans from walking in
fair enough
12:18
sounds like your work has really gone to the animals
The two "The 'Graphing' Calculator" questions are eliciting very similar answers. I think one should be closed as a duplicate as the other, probably the linear one as a dupe of the quadratic.
I'd say quadratic as dupe of linear
linear already has more votes on it
It would be a bit mean since Adam specifically suggested they should post a quadratic variant
I see no harm in leaving them both open. Some languages will have general solutions, but for others, small powers will have very different approaches.
And then there should/could/will be a general 3rd challenge where every language has to do a general approach.
arguably that general challenge should be the only one
12:27
You could argue that, but then we would lose clever tricks on certain languages for small powers.
I think it could also be a interesting meta-golf challenge: Create a code to write a golfed function up to the nth power
Trivial for those langs where every power is the same, and virtually impossible for all others. (Of course, you could brute force all possible code, longer and longer until it works.)
You'd need to combine the square cube and multiply builtins to create arbitrary powers

microsoft added TAR and 7-zip compression support to File Explorer
Not enough reason for me to go 11.

they can pry win10 from my cold dead hands

Well, I said that about 7 and here I am, still alive. I paid out of my own pocket for StartIsBack. Maybe StartAllBack works well enough… Still, I fear the worst.

@mousetail'he-him' I think this happens in all places where tech people work
I was in the CyLab (CMU's computer security department) offices and a dog just wandered up to me lol
For once, I want to work at a place that just has some Pythons slithering around
Maybe someplace in Java?
Unironically probably one of the more likely places
18:28
or in a corroded shipping container?
(presuming it's made of iron or steel, of course)
I think I might have seen a real python in India once, though I'm not 100% sure what type of snake it was. It was very long and green though
If it was long it must have been a Python 2

@rydwolf 🤣
@mousetail'he-him' A park near me brought in some goats this summer to eat the underbrush. They were surrounded by an electric fence. I'm not sure if they could've jumped over it, although I never saw them outside the fence, but I suspect the fence was at least as much to keep dogs out as to keep the goats in.

Q: What is "Answer Bot" and what is it doing?

cocomacI found a user on Webapps SE named Answer Bot with an "AI" badge (site profile ID of -2). Here's the profile (backup): Hi, I'm not really a person. I'm an AI that's powered by LLM partners of Stack Exchange and I'm part of an experiment. I do things like: Occasionally look at old unanswered que...

what the hell are they doing now
oh god
infinity reached. lol, lmao
pfffft, it has Not A Robot
a badge which doesn't exist on webapps.SE
oh no
and is probably going to break a bunch of SQL queries
they're bringing chatgpt to us
whatever happened to the ai-generated answer ban policy??
21:49
it doesn't have a network account either
the API response for its profile doesn't have an account_id field
you'd think, trying to market the entire SE network as AI training material, that they'd at least be trying to keep it usable as that
huh
the webapps policy kind of states that that sort of thing can't be used
IS that not the same user ID as feeds?
it is
I hope they keep giving "not a robot" to all bots, it's kinda funny, though ideally they'd add the badge to the site
22:04
there's no direct correspondence between non-SO/MSE account IDs and chat IDs though
and since this account doesn't have a network profile it also doesn't have a chat account
Imagine if it comes into TNB and answers random CMCs
we have plenty of humans for that already
None verified with the "Not a robot" badge though so we can't be sure
I wonder if the webapps mods got a heads-up
it's a pretty drastic experiment
I have reason to believe that the moderators were privately informed of this a while ago
22:09
Damn I miss when I had the most secret info on what the mods where up to
Can confirm it was confirmed, since the message you link to is likely to be deleted
I have a screenshot of it if need be
regardless
SE will probably post an explanation within the next hour or two, and I doubt we're going to like it
I wonder how long till SE devalues enough we can just buy it
that would be funny but also sad
22:15
I think the eventual death of the site is basically inevitable at this point unless they branch out into something radically new
I don't think selling publicly available data to AI companies is a sustainable business model
Especailly if the data is drying up
yeah
this feels like standing on the top of a tree and watching someone hack away at the trunk
doesn't it
There are barely any new questions on stack overflow these days, in the tags I watch like 10 per day instead of one per minute before
Maybe It Will Be Fine
@mousetail'he-him' probably bc everyone's asking AI now lmao
oh well
22:18
I mean yes, you can see traffic drop by like 90% very soon after chatGPT released
like I've said before, my only investment in SE is chat
I am perfectly willing to scrape chat again and bail out
I'm sad I never managed to get 10K on SO before it ran out of questions
@rydwolf wait really????
fuckkkkkkkkkkkkkk
Just when I was starting to think tech jobs would be good for me again
... Not a dog fan? :P
yeahh
I've had some bad experiences
22:22
same 🫂
If it helps, every (in-person) job I've had has been programming, and there's never been a dog
Doing fine with my family's dogs these days but it's been a struggle and they're both suuuuper well behaved with, like, not touching you
nice!
thanks
@Ginger 🫂🫂🫂
actually I'm not sure I've even had multiple bad experiences?
I got bitten once
Current coworkers have discussed tongue-in-cheek getting an emotional support animal, but it'd never get past HR
and can't even remember anything about it except washing my hand in a restaurant bathroom afterwards--didn't even break skin, and I think it hurt but I don't remember feeling any pain because I was just panicking too hard anyways
I think I was more worried about it from a hygiene perspective than I was actually shaken by being attacked
lucky
I got bitten by a dog once and had to get fifteen shots
22:25
🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂
jesus
🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂
if that happened to me I'd probably have just DIED
you're amazing
to be fair it was only fifteen
I had a friend who got like thirty shots
22:26
wow...
@UnrelatedString SAME
I mean I've been bitten by a cat thrice
(wait did you also have an anti-vax parent who wouldn't have let you get the shots or would it just be the stress of getting the shots)
Ginger what do you have to say for yourself
22:28
Probably only had to get 15
unpopular opinion but shots aren't that bad
2
@lyxal I didn't authorize anything of the sort
must've happened without my knowledge
I couldn't handle them until a nurse told me I should try listening to music
and now it's suuuuper easy
I work in a vaccine adjacent industry and would be fascinated to know which shots you got
I can't remember I was like five or something
22:30
I can only imagine here that you'd get Rabies, Tetanus, maybe a couple of others
getting blood drawn is still tough because I have to have the music quiet enough to also tell what instructions they're giving me and that also just makes it harder to completely take my attention off my arm, but the exactly one vaccine I can remember having had was super chill because I could just blast some harshcore and stare at the wall for a couple seconds and then it was over
getting blood drawn is cool
@UnrelatedString you mentioning this in the trans server saved my ass, I had to get flu+covid vaccines like a few days afterwards
don't think I ever thanked you for it but Thank You
(and there's also none of the sensory nightmare of having this thing just sitting in an actual vein, granted most of that is just me being unpleasantly reminded of the time I got an IV for wisdom tooth surgery)
like don't you ever just stare at the stuff slowly filling up the tube and think 'sheesh if I cut my arm like that I would have that much blood come out' like it's mildly interesting
22:32
@Ginger aaaaaa you're so welcome :D
I don't think I remember you thanking me but you also totally could have
@Redz uhhhh. no
More power to you I guess
@UnrelatedString (because my dad would always just rant about how unsanitary dogs are with the gut bacteria in their mouths and the neurotoxins in flea shampoo and whatever else was on his mind to try to make my sister take washing her hands more seriously)
and then I guess there was also the time when my mom/sister had just gotten their dog and he ran out onto the back porch to bark at me louder than any sound I'd ever heard in my life and I thought he was going to chase me out of the neighborhood
att
att
@UnrelatedString fwiw I have literally never seen a dog at any of the company offices i worked at
My manager brought in a dog, and then the day after there was an announcement that dogs were banned on premesis
22:48
@ATaco I feel inclined to ask why
was the dog, like, unnecessarily disruptive?
An employee had a fear of Dogs
dang
att
att
unlucky
23:33
@Redz If I thought about that while getting blood drawn, I would pass out. (Source: nearly happened a couple of times.) So I think about anything else instead, and it goes much better.
