@Klumpy7 that's actually a pretty fun challenge, you should post it to the sandbox

I review some sandbox posts

@noodleperson I attempted an Uiua solution to the "simple" version of the problem, and I don't think it's too simple. It's on the easy end of challenges but not every challenge needs to be complex
14:36
@mousetail'he-him' did it in uiua too, and as somebody who basically doesn't know uiua it was pretty simple
having the stack around was really useful though
Your Uiua skills might be better than mine
how long?
(mine i spent like two minutes on, not golfed at all)
though i don't think i've done anything particularly uiua-y
would write something very similar in any other language
I didn't actually finish it
@lyxal this is some /r/2sentencehorror "the creature" bs
2s2h
@mousetail'he-him' i'm guessing we have the same approach because i can't think of anything else
can i share sols to sandboxed problems here?
14:46
I don't think there are rules against it
Though maybe spoiler tag it just in case
@Themoonisacheese but then it was knife guy
i thought i was safe from knife guy when i heard the chat.SE notification sound
it was knife guy
is 2s2h active anymore? haven't gotten any notifications in a while
I think so?
might have lost some steam lately but it's not dead dead
14:50
@RubenVerg long permalink jumpscare
had notifications on popular only, maybe nothing reached that threshold?
put it on daily now
i havent looked at reddit beyond google searches in like a years and a half
haven't looked at the reddit homepage in a long time, i only consume content that arrives through notifications

noway
Ok I got this now uiua.org/… (spoilers) Now I'll look at your answer
Oh it's very different
...so TIL that Python's floor divide behaves differently from divide-then-floor with a non-integer denominator
The ⍜¯⇡ trick is smart
1/.1 is 10.0, which obviously floors to 10, but 1//.1 is... 9.0
It doesn't seem there's any discrepancy if the denominator has an exact binary representation?
...10**x//.9 is an interesting way to get repunits...
@mousetail'he-him' hm, can you explain what you're doing?
15:01
though it's only good up to x=15
@mousetail'he-him' good to know i don't know uiua well enough to understand others' code
I panicked the Pad lol now I can't edit anything
...what DOES putting a function in array brackets do ther
e
also come to think of it I should probably try this in Jelly before looking at anyone else's approach
collects all returned values in an array
15:05
Anyway, I use a macro like this to count bytes: Bytes‼ ←^ &pf $"_ bytes" ⧻°□⊢.
oooooooh
That's clean
Then I can just Bytes!!(my code) and it will print the length
What's the benefit of "reshape dip x" instead of "reshape swap x"?
looks nicer(:
the golf there is using the character, i switched to dip because it's more intuitive to me
↯⊙literal is a pattern in my head
15:11
dip is just so clean in general
@mousetail'he-him' Alternatively, use len stringify(...)
@mousetail'he-him' Happens whenever there's an interpreter crash you should report it
I usually just copy-paste the code from the line above, and use a raw string literal len $ ...,
after only 249 days of being dead!
Cool
What's it for exactly?
Oh nvm I get it
It's like a reviewing tool to make edits to improve accessibility, nice
15:24
yep!
@mousetail'he-him' It's a rad idiom yeah
That page has a bunch of similar idioms
under divide range, for example, lets you put the amount to step
@mousetail'he-him' I already have one, it's pretty short
Like 20 chars or so iirc
I'll make it again and count how long
21 chars, uses some experimental functions so it'd be 23 with no experimentals
and the "hard" version would be like the exact same length
maybe a char longer
@Ginger 🥳🥳🥳
no same length
@noodleperson nice, how does it work?
I can send it
That's the one with string input, int input is the same but use dip0 instead of bylen
resdip0, that is
15:37
oh I see
It's pretty simple, just gets the factor pair by doing the 1-range to the square root of N and picking the largest which is divisible
forgot about remainder
I wrote is division equal to floor? but at least that one already gave me the other component to save on the stack
Nice
I actually just golfed the one with number input by another char
because of you taking a string couldn't something with reshape couple infinity work?
Hm good thought lemme see
@RubenVerg Yup 17 chars
My golf to the one with number input is clever lol
15:44
@noodleperson nice!
this is exactly what I want golf together to be like
:) It works best in chatroom format I think, maybe have a discord server with a thread for each challenge?
there'll definitely be a forum like system, but maybe chat like is better
19 chars for number input pad
@RubenVerg I think so because it might allow people to work more collaboratively
And I feel like it just doesn't need the kind of scaling fragmentation a full forum offers/encourages
@noodleperson reusing the number, nice!
15:56
for numeric input
big fan of btw
It's rad yeah
I was the person to finally convince Kai to add it lol
but we talked about it in the Uiua server for months
oooh, nice
@noodleperson thanks
16:01
I'm on fire lol
feels kinda crazy that wasn't there before but I guess there's probably some relatively simple way to compose existing primitives to do that...?
...but the only one I can think of is like
messy as hell
@UnrelatedString onflip
swap dip dup swap???
@noodleperson oh nice
or overflip
That's why Kai didn't want to add it because it's already only two chars. But it's so much better this way
16:04
@noodleperson and over is byflip, right?
do withflip and offflip make any sense?
Maybe
idr
off flip is around I think
they do : + .
withflip is over I guess then
@RubenVerg hm?
⤚: is ⊙.:
Well, we painted the fence. 160 people showed up, and 10 organizations officially contributed. Biggest fence painting since 9/11.

@RubenVerg For dyadic
yeah

@rydwolf Niiice! What with this time?
Last time you mentioned it you were painting solo at 2 AM :P
The republicans painted it night before last, which pissed off such a broad coalition of people that I worked with a couple people to organize this massive event in less than 12 hours
ah LMAO
awesome
16:11
I just got appointed to the CMU Dems exec board for it, and got thoroughly praised by a Kamala staffer
It's always surprising how many there are that just come out of the woodwork at universities
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
wow
I think it actually came out pretty ugly but you should've seen the party going on. We had a whole band that just sorta materialized, hundreds of dollars in food and drinks (not including tons of pizza donated from professors in lieu of being able to help), and random people who I had no idea knew of each other all ended up there
(like I'm not shocked that there's probably MORE of them at UNC proportionally than there are in the entire rest of the Chapel Hill/Carrboro area, considering if nothing else the way we have admission quotas by congressional district, but it was still bizarre to see one of those boards next to the union painted with an ad for the local Toilet Paper USA chapter
)
@rydwolf whoa
...did it actually turn out that those people knew each other or did they just filter in from unrelated groups
Like, Scotch'n'Soda (the theater club here) pitched in, and my RA's in it, so she was there. And then it turned out she knew the president of CMU Dems, who apparently just broke up with "the tunnel guy" who I'm learning that sort of stuff from, who's in the same historically-Jewish frat as about half the people in README, which is a subsidiary of KGB, whose entire exec board minus two people was present, and so on and so forth
Just like a massive spiderweb that I'm now very interconnected with lol
CMC: Make an error that cannot be caught and mitigated by your programming language’s error handling system. (e.g. try/catch)
My academic performance has been hardocre plummeting but I have the sort of friend group and social connections I could barely have dreamed about two years ago, and I have basicsally four more years here
...there are historically-Jewish frats??
And there are people in frats who are like actual interesting human beings?????
which does remind me of this gem that was quoted to me on Tuesday
Alpha Epsilon Pi (ΑΕΠ), commonly known as AEPi, is a college fraternity founded at New York University in 1913. The fraternity has more than 150 active chapters across the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, and Israel, and has initiated more than 110,000 members. Although the fraternity is based upon Jewish principles, it is non-discriminatory and is open to all who are willing to espouse its purpose and values regardless of their particular faith tradition. == History == Alpha Epsilon Pi was founded on November 7, 1913, under the Washington Square Arch at New York University (NYU) by Charles...
> - We should turn game dev club into a frat.
> - In a couple of years it'll be a sorority!

16:18
LMAO
Apparently for the last few years our AEPi chapter has been pretty good in terms of like, being a safe and respectful place, but there's been a lot of stuff going on and it's becoming more like how you'd expect a frat to be
for context this was quoted to me specifically by the club president at dinner, while she was at a table of 5 with FOUR transfems (including me), and she'd just remarked on how she has this eerie tendency to just end up in various kinds of groups where she's the only cis person
:(
(and I imagine most of that tendency is just autistic magnetism but it's still funny)
There's a very large proportion of README that's Jewish, to the point that for a while we were considering doing a whole issue of readme that was just them writing articles centered around it lol
(but that didn't end up happening due to concerns it wouldn't be clear who it was written by, and just come across as antisemitism)
That part also definitely doesn't surprise me
it seems like the kind of thing with Jewish Vibes
16:23
Also due to our naming scheme it would be called "the jewish issue" which is a little unfortunate
even though no one group invented satire obviously
💀💀💀💀💀💀
you should TOTALLY have an article that mentions that though
@rydwolf but anyways yeah same LMAO
hopefully I only have closer to three years left but basically the same
README used to exist a while back as a distinct organization (it was revived by KGB last semester), recently someone found an archive of their old content and some of it was bad
They had an article about a new dorm called "New Hauschwitz"
16:25
To their credit the joke density was impressively high, but we definitelty would not publish that today
I think the edgiest thing I've seen is an article I'm writing right now, about what academic advisors think about minors
ahahahahahaha
I was told "we'll only publish it if it's really funny" so I need to try hard lol
My advisor didn't want me to declare a ling minor because he thought I had too much to deal with and should consider dropping my CS major
I literally already fulfill all of the requirements for a ling minor
And then some
By complete accident
because I was literally just like oh this class sounds too fun to NOT TAKE
16:28
Our advisors here are such enablers. My friend wanted to drop her film major to switch to a different double and they wre like "welllll, you could always do a film minor" so now she has two majors and two minors lol
@rydwolf ?!
lmaooooooooooooooo
NICE!
ok gimme a sec to backread
Ooh ooh wait the coolest fucking thing happened last night
done
The editor in chief and the CMU dems president were talking, and an old friend of theirs (now an alum) is visiting in a few days, and they were talking about going to this restaurant that's pretty good with him. I was like "do you think I could maybe come along?" and they were like "dude you know we're friends right??"
rydwolf's college experience continues to go as I anticipated it would :p
So I have confirmed friends now and I can just do cool stuff with them
I'm surprised it didn't take at least a little longer for his grades to crash but I'm also surprised it took this long for his social circle to just become gigantic
16:30
I was reasonably sure that you would either get the boot for trespassing or become a minor celebrity
or both
I'm sure this is doing interesting things to my six-degrees-of-separation numbers
Also README is going to rent out a whole ass house next year since the people who are in AEPi don't want to live there anymore
don't xkcd that
generally a bad idea to half-ass a house
I'm probably going to be an RA, so I wouldn't live there, but it's going to have an open door policy (and lots of alcohol 👀)
16:32
@rydwolf like when I say I'm having this same experience, "the sort of friend group and social connections I could barely have dreamed about two years ago" is like ALMOST comparable to you in high school if I'm extremely conservative about extrapolating your high school social life
@rydwolf whoa nice
@UnrelatedString I will never understand how people manage giant social circles
@UnrelatedString That's still so good tho
Like how do they even have the mental bandwidth for it
@rydwolf IKR
I have like ten IRL friends lol
it's amazing
16:34
I can manage all of yall exclusively because text chat is asynchronous
Social circles are a gateway drug, you'll be organizing events with 200 people before you know it :p
if that were going to happen it would've happened by now
@Ginger You're three degrees from Kamala Harris btw
I not only have two friends I meet with once every week, but I even have a handful of other people in a club I meet IRL slightly more than once every two weeks AND chat with on Discord, and two other clubs plus a support group AND a biweekly pseudo-club trans hangout thing
which makes me four degrees from both biden and trump
dunno how I feel about that
16:36
😔
Ginger-rydwolf-[name redacted]-Kamala
@Ginger And that’s why you vote independent
no.
no it's not
gingtired.png
😬
Don't say the word independent around me for the next few weeks
16:37
can we not please and thank you
Actually independent is far right
let’s not do that
ANYWAY
I have an old "friend" who was unironically advocating it EVEN THOUGH SHE'S TRANS and it just makes me so mad to even think about
but let's not get into that
16:38
Can we put a little subtitle on the RO election calling it "the biggest election of 2024"
real
this makes kamala a maximum of six degrees of separation from, say, balpha
Having to manage a coalition of the CMU Democrats (which is directly affiliated with the democratic party) and the CMCP (college progressives, very anti-democratic-party) last night was very tough
I can imagine
16:39
At one point I started shit talking the CMCP people right in front of one of their board members lmao
They had a GBM that night that someone dragged me along to, they were making fun of our fence design and blaming the election loss on stupid stuff and I was so tired of it
gingercontinental ballistic missile?
4
I read that as "gingercontinental" and that is canon now
16:41
the roof missile lore expands
took me like three takes to realize you didn't type that
if I had mod powers I'd edit reality to match my expectation
(GBM = General Body Meeting)
16:41
@UnrelatedString this person doesn't know about the roof missile lore
the problem with it is that it's from like two years ago and I don't like two-years-ago-ginger very much
she was chill but yeah I get it
What happened to my empty-continental ballistic-string photography missile? Did it get confiscated?
> [Ginger's] the sort to have like, custom ground-to-air missile installations on their roof
> For squirrels or some shit
- rydwolf
And admittedly that's also an impression I inherited from two-years-ago-String and she was just a disaster
@Ginger I stand by that btw
16:44
if not the outright piece of shit that ten-years-ago-String was
Star this message if you believe that message stars in TNB secretly rule the entire world.
@rydwolf some things never change
Honestly if you don't dislike who you were two years ago in some meaningful ways, you're doing it wrong
real
@UnrelatedString and I even sit at the same table with two of the people from the club in one of my classes after I found out halfway through the semester that we're both in the same section and they specifically invited me to
(because they're on the other corner of the room from where I had been sitting and for the first few weeks of class I kinda tried to actively avoid sitting at a table with anyone at all until one of the TAs told me I had to and at that point who sat where was close enough to stabilizing that eventually I just ended up being able to sit with the same three strangers for a month straight without having to ask too many times if I could)
@rydwolf REAL
16:45
@rydwolf I hate my deleted Stack Overflow posts from two years ago…
I'm at a point in my life rn where I absolutely know I'm going to figure a whole lot out about who I am and who I want to be in the next few years and I'm here for it
👀
the win11 emoji font makes that emoji look like it's having a staring contest with my pfp
AAAAAA
it does holy shit
16:48
but yeah the full list of orgs at the fence painting was: CMU Dems, CMCP (the college progressives), PRISM (our queer org), SPIRIT (black student union), SALSA (latino/a/x student union), KGB, README (technically a subsidiary of KGB but meh), Scotch'n'Soda, Roboclub (our robotics club, they came in clutch with equipment), and fur club apparently
based furries
> I Need To Make A Web Page Which Requires Me To Put Objects Directly Below Other Objects. Here Is What I Tried:
this wikipedia page smacks of being written by one person
And/or being cut whole cloth from an article elsewhere that was written by one person
true
16:52
because stylistically it feels so un-Wikipedia
right??
It was kinda awkward 'cause I was shouting out all the orgs there with a megaphone and at the end I was like "am I missing anyone?" and this group of like three people yells "fur club" and I kinda look at the other organizers like "is this serious or are they making fun of us/the furries" then they just get really angry and yell "SAY FUR CLUB!" So I do lol
@Ginger oh boy this reminds me
PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF
rydwolf is one of very few people I know that I would be willing to bet will have a wikipedia page written about them
I happen to just have been an actor in a sketch about Wikipedia articles written by a single person :p
16:53
asdg;kjlhsdfakgl;nfasdgklj;
WHAT LMAO
how do you even make that a SKETCH
Will give more details once back on my laptop in a second lol
@UnrelatedString oh you're about to see
It's hard enough to imagine a joke article about that
oh yeah I should probably eat the world's fastest lunch and head to class now
why are all the interesting TLDs like $50/yr
16:54
granted this is like THE skippable lecture in this class this semester because it's a guest lecturer talking about something unrelated but it also sounds so fun
Ever tried eating a bagel as fast as you can? I made that mistake once
maybe squarespace is just upcharging me for some reason
They probably are, try name cheap or go daddy maybe
ugh god don't put spaces in those names
that feels viscerally wrong
16:55
Autocorrect with the whitespace making me look like an idiot
if only I had a server that I could potentially use with a domain! :3c
Okay back on a laptop
Strap in
@Ginger Especially with GoDaddy
So, I'm a professor in this sketch
I'm in my office, and a student comes in to take a midterm (presumably a makeup)
Like I'm desensitized to that being the name of the company specifically with no spaces, and because their ads always pronounce it stressed like one word like GOdaddy
16:58
Shortly after she starts writing, I ask, "if you had to describe me in three words, what would they be?" and "what hobby makes me sound most attractive?" and all sorts of stuff like that
but I see Go Daddy and it's like, "Go, Daddy!" and that's just an uncomfortable thing to hear in my brain
So naturally she assumes I'm writing a dating profile or something
ooooh
OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
LGASDRJKGHRDAL:GHJDSR:LJHS JLM:KHFSDAL:MJKAFDS:LKMERA
But then I'm like "what do you mean citation needed?"
16:58
how on earth did this come up
like
And there's a reveal that it's actually my wikipedia page
And we scroll through it and reach "controversies"
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
There's a brief gag where I spent like 10-20 seconds deleting the sexual misconduct section
ahahahahahahahah
Then we get to "the gerbil incident". We briefly make eye contact and agree I should definitely delete it
Then she goes back to her test, and I start taking thirst trap selfies for the infobox
And after a bit, I notice something's rolled back
