Q: Make an almost-square

noodle personGiven a positive integer N, output a grid with area N and height and width dimensions as close together as possible, so as for the output to be an almost-square. The output can be a 2d array of characters/numbers/etc. or be a single string of characters separated by newlines. You may use any valu...

I kinda want to bounty akamayu's Dyalog APL solution too. It's very clever
and very underseen
@RubenVerg Clicking the link doesn't work for me
Says the page took too long to respond
By the way, how can I check out golf together? I haven't really looked into it but I am a fan of the concept
@emanresuA I think it's a good idea because a lot of people have posted answers which were wrong. It's easy to miss, the format for the song and the lyrics are different site to site
Nevermind, found golf together's link 82.66.97.238:20080
It doesn't let me make my username "Jacob" :o
What are the rules for a legal username?
att
att
01:00
when 4 chars wasnt enough i gave up
Lol
I tried "Jacob1" which I thought would work because lyxal got "lyxal3" which is the same length
but it didn't
@noodleperson I also got lyxal, lyxal2 and lyxal4
Okay yeah so clearly it's bugged
I keep forgetting my password so I just make a new account each time lol
Or Maddie changed the rules
01:13
I just managed to get lyxal5
so TIL that javascript will throw "too much recursion" on catastrophic regex backtracking
att
att
@noodleperson there could be a cool save if only dyalog had fold with initial value
Hey gamers, it's time to write another Regular Expressions System 😎
@att Oh? What would that be?
att
att
01:17
@noodleperson ⍴/ the result of
att
att
doable in bqn maybe
Why would that work?
Oh nvm I get it
That's smart
att
att
feels like it's been ages since i used bqn
I've never tried it. I want to though
I've used Uiua a lot, which I know takes inspiration from BQN
att
att
01:19
i went apl->bqn->k and stuck with k
I know a bit of APL.
I know TinyAPL much better than Dyalog
I also know some J
att
att
j is the big major array language i never really learned
@noodleperson Feels like you'd need to know more than a fraction of a byte to use a language
@lyxal Correction: I know all of APL. A, P, L
@ATaco did you just watch that stand up maths video?
01:25
@noodleperson much better
01:45
@Neil Close, a 3Brown1Blue video

@l4m2 not much to suggest on my end but i feel like the fact this requires your language to hold references or pointers in arrays massively limits what languages can do it
then again not doing that changes the challenge significantly in terms of what maths it is equivalent to so idk
@Themoonisacheese Last paragraph expilictly allow valuey input, no pointer needed for a lang to solve
don't know how i missed that
that's better but i still think it would end up requiring you to reimplement a version of pointers using that
not that it matters to me anyway this is the type of challenge that's way over my head so you can probably disregard what i'm saying

11:59
@noodleperson yeah limit was 6 characters
changed to 5 now
Ok cool
Why didn't "Jacob1" work then? Was there a problem with my password I guess?
@noodleperson it worked fine for me when i tested it out
there are no requirements on the password
(except that it can't be empty)
Ok. I just made an account :)
Have you noticed that your server is very slow?
It took like six or seven seconds to redirect me to the homepage
@noodleperson yeah the pi which was routing the requests died again
@noodleperson it's a database problem, it's across the ocean from the server
we're working on solving that
You could use a cloud hosted database closer to your pi or something
12:02
currently it's on a server in france generously lent by Themoonisacheese
and the database is on Supabase
i vaguely remember not being able to choose the region in free
eu-west-3
Oh hm.
and you cannot move databases that already exist
we're working on putting it locally
and mirror the changes on Supabase as a backup
but it's turned out to be more complex than we thought
12:29
@noodleperson managed to read "seconds" as "weeks"
So when can I expect to see your homepage after logging in?
About 6-8 weeks
13:07
about the more complex than we thought: help is wanted from someone with experience in ipv6 networking because i'm way out of my depth
@RubenVerg dumping the db and recreating it in eu-west-3 is also an option btw
provided it's possible to choose the location of course which it might not be
I'll check
heh, can only create two free projects and one of them is the test one

Discovered a new way to take fractions of numbers in a golfy way in Desmos
In Desmos, x.1 is interpreted as x*0.1, or x/10

Week-long fence hold is finally over
Academically I'm deeply fucked but I organized something that brought hope to more people than I could ever count so I'm happy nonetheless
as you should be
All week we've had people (including tons of profs) who've come by to say thanks or give us free food
We're organizing a (one night) fence painting for Trans Day of Remembrance which I'm pretty excited for
Oh also my advisor is fully onboard with my new career plan (and a big fan of the fence) and gave me a ton of useful info :D
I suppose I can't exactly thank you directly since I, uh, wasn't there :p
but I can thank you for organizing it and (as you said) bringing hope to so many; your work has a bigger impact than you can ever know
Did I show y'all pictures of it?
I don't think so?
it's things like this that keep me going ngl
reassurance that... how'd you put it? this too shall pass
blah I can't words. need water
17:38
@DJMcMayhem Your message ID is the first 8 digits of pi!
I'm currently trying to download the fence pics off instagram and it is taking a whole long time lol
god this is so infuriating
Here's the only one I could get
All of us standing in front of the republicans' fence
yall's faces are like eight pixels each :p
Here's the front
And here's the cool side
You can't see most of the detail but it's breathtaking in person
that's awesome :p
Me last night :D
We had it lit up for a few nights
You can think Milwaukee, CAT, Lockheed Martin (lmao), and a few other of our robotics club's sponsors for the equipment lol
(The irony of lockmart unintentionally being a small part of what enabled this fence to exist is beautiful to me)
Apparently the community engagement fellowship would give me $3k in funding for further efforts which would be sick as fuck
So I'll definitely apply for that
18:07
Also, unrelated note, I fully support Redz as a nominee for RO--she's been a great RO in TGC
2
agreed
the argument against her seems to be that she lacks experience with CGCC, but I think this community really isn't that different from PLDI, especially given how PLDI came to be in the first place

chat is not letting me check how many messages she has here because she's been offline for two weeks :|
> The MCAT score range is 472–528
...why not just make it 0 to 56 ffs
18:22
magnificent cat appreciation test?
duh :p
(the med school admissions test lol)
ah
your chat bio still says "future president" :p
oops
trnas/gender-affirming
shut up
fixed :p

true!
at some point I want to revisit my shitty chat website, because I think I've finally solved the problem of authenticating users
and the solution is WebAuthn (my beloved)
a way to prove your identity that doesn't need you to trust me with your password and doesn't depend on an external authentication provider

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

Klumpy7Go ><> Fish Given a school of fish, for example: ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> <>< <>< ><> <>< ><> ><> ><> ><><>< ><>><> <>< ><> ><> <>< ><> <>< ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> <><<>< ><> <><><> ...

the only problem with it is that I think FF has slightly flaky support for it?
maybe they changed this but last time I tried to use it with FF it didn't work because it wanted a hardware security key and I store my keys on my phone
and I'm loath to use something that Firefox doesn't support
never mind all the times I've done that inadverdently...

@Ginger it seems really really complex
we'll see :3c

2 hours later…
22:27
@Ginger 100% of the reason I haven't voted for yet is the lack of recent chat history.
I suspect a lot of voters think similarly
she's on hiatus for a few weeks, that's why
Respectable, but doesn't make for an active RO
people don't go on hiatus all the time :|
this was an unfortunate accident of scheduling
@ATaco if the vote was at a different time it'd be a different story
Redz has proven to be an active RO of TGC
xnor hasn't been seen for, oh, two years
22:38
^
Bubbler hasn't been seen around very much either
Which is why we're doing a vote isn't it?
A school camp shouldn't be a reason you don't vote for someone
Yeah, but I only have anecdotal motivation to vote for them
I'm not saying they wouldn't be a good RO, which is why I haven't down-voted.
Just wilfully abstaining.
(And explaining that it's probably the same reason many are doing the same)
I don't wish my abstinence to be misinterpreted as a lack of trust in their ability.
(redz uses she/her fwiw)
(Ah, I was playing it safe with theys)
