Sandbox posts last active a week ago: Longest Tiles Combo

@user Java 8 is in the minority by now
i feel modules are too clunky to set up; you can go without them, and that's the path most take
> A message from SOMU userscripts
whats SOMU?

1:32 AM
hmm the moderation striike has started on "June 5" when its still 4

eastern time zones be like that :p

hmm @mousetail is the author of the letter?

Australia sitting here half way through monday >:(

6 mins ago, by lyxal
eastern time zones be like that :p
also it's not half way
it's 20 minutes to half way :p

1:47 AM
huh, never seen pinned message injection before
got confused looking for the message before I realised "oh yeah that's right I don't use chat userscripts anymore"

the culprit is chat emojis

@Seggan SO Mod Userscripts apparently

i agree with the reasons for the strike, but i dont like the idea of me not participating on the platform (except on chat apparently), esp with PLDI's private beta

Q: Split a string on unnested commas

DadsdyCreate the shortest program/function/whatever that splits an inputted string along un-nested commas. A comma is considered nested if it is either within parentheses, brackets, or braces. Input and output Output should be a list. The input may contain any characters. All testcases will have valid...

2:47 AM
@Seggan we did agree not to abandon the private beta, because that would 100% kill it

@Seggan many userscripts on both chat and main depend on SOMU which is a library-like thing for userscripts
I have a moderation userscript so I also got that
also despite my initial disinterest I gave it some more thought and decided I'm going to participate too; I still don't think it'll make much of a difference whether or not I do but if everyone thought that way this would fall flat on its face and a) there isn't any risk b) even if there were I can accept that

2 hours later…
4:40 AM
@mousetail I was told to contact you about needing an SO account to sign the open letter - I refuse the make an SO account, so right now I'm only able to sign the letter in spirit meta.stackexchange.com/questions/389811/…
[sorry for butting in on y'all's room but I saw that they were here]

5:10 AM
@bobble We are thinking of a solution, are you OK with me adding you manually for now?
@Seggan Nope, Mythical wrote most of it. I just hosted it

@mousetail feel free. I'm about to go to sleep so I won't be responsive for ~8hrs

@Ginger I hate this so much
what's wrong with putting stuff in like /tools or whatever

5:32 AM
@RubenVerg normally you'd be right but this is one of those circumstances where you just don't question things
And not because you brush it under the rug, but because questioning it leads to further questions and a loss of sanity

2 hours later…
7:03 AM
I don't really have a sanity to lose
so I'm ready :)

7:29 AM
I mean I guess that's fair

1 hour later…
8:58 AM
How long do y'all think it'll take for SE to roll out ai spam filters?
Given that they seem to be going all in on AI, that's probably something they might do

Do we have a challenge about intuitionistic SAT problem?

9:29 AM
@Adám ewwwww! elephant coffee?

10:09 AM
2 cups of decremented mouse tea moved from The Nineteenth Bakery

Thanks again for that
They really need to make a way to mass move messages on mobile
That, or someone needs to make it so I can use volume buttons for shift :p

Wait, you just need a shift button?

That or control
Because otherwise you can't select more than one message

@Adám what... mouse tea... WHAT!?!

@lyxal If you're on Android, you can just install a keyboard that has shifting keys.

10:17 AM
@Adám you would think so, but the keyboard has to stay on screen
And you have to actively hold shift too

Hm. Oh well, I don't use mobile… Happy to be of service.

Good luck interacting with the keyboard and the chat UI at the same time
One will override the other
@Adám thanks again - I appreciate it
@lyxal I've even tried using a persistent keyboard/gamepad thing but it doesn't let me select messages
Interestingly enough, connecting a physical keyboard works
Holding shift on the keyboard and tapping the messages works

@lyxal I've only done that once (mouse too), and it was a truly mind-bending experience.
All of a sudden, it dawned that Android is nothing but a Linux with a strange desktop.

Yeah it's an unusual experience but it's pretty cool
I've previously connected my Bluetooth mouse to Android and it magically worked

For the uninitiated reader: When you plug in a mouse, a cursor appears on the phone screen, and you can now drag and drop stuff, etc.

10:23 AM
I mean, that's probably how they can make Android laptops too

And as for the keyboard, standard keyboard shortcuts just work. Imagine doing Ctrl+X/C/V on your phone!
I don't remember if Alt+Tab worked, or if ⊞ opens a menu.

May 2, 2022 at 9:46, by lyxal
Fun fact: if you have an OTG connector and a wired keyboard, it's easy to move multiple messages at once from your phone
Found the last time I used a keyboard with phone
Apr 11, 2022 at 11:53, by lyxal
I have discovered the power of OTG connections for Android, and can I just say wow! Using a real keyboard + phone is cool as anything
That's right it even let me use SwiftKey autocomplete
That was definitely an experience

Someone should make a phone with a real keyboard and mouse… Oh.
2

Sounds like a fruitful idea
Speaking of fruit maybe it could be named after some sort of berry
Since dark mode is all the rage lately, maybe it could be a black coloured berry
I dunno I'm not that good with names :p

Wait, wait, I have another radical idea: Maybe they could increase the screen size for productivity, especially the width — modern phones are so tall and narrow. Why not make it a clamshell phone with the keyboard and mouse on the bottom half and the screen on to top half?

10:34 AM
@Adám a phone that expands and contracts as needed.

@Adám oh now you're talking! Man, life would be good with such a phone!
(at least I'm pretty sure LG once made something like that)
(might have been Samsung - I don't fully remember which brand)

@Adám isn’t that what old mobile phones were?
Well, maybe no mouse

11:00 AM
@PlaceReporter99 No, I was thinking the screen would simply be big.

foldable phone?
how would the mouse work? a tiny trackpad?
maybe moving your finger on the side of the phone could change the cursor’s position

11:13 AM
@noodleman Why tiny?
@PlaceReporter99 I don't think so, no.

11:42 AM
@lyxal my work has a usb-c dongle to connect monitors etc to a laptop and sometimes i just plug my phone into everything and it works

@Adám My mom has an old camera phone with a built-in physical QWERTY keyboard

@JoKing As in the phone is displayed on the monitors? Or the peripherals connect to the phone?

(Not to offend anyone by calling camera phones “old”, I realize now how that could be taken, but it has pictures of me and my brothers from elementary school.)

@Bbrk24 one of those samsung things?

Yeah!

11:47 AM
nice!
thanks ddg
one second

Can’t be newer than like 2007

that thing?

@RubenVerg cry about it
(and also what lyxal said)

@lyxal oh not that, the camera is smaller

ah

11:49 AM
In terms of branding, it’s Samsung + Verizon specifically
Samsung SCH U960. I was off by a couple years (2009, not 2007)

@Adám are you saying the phone would be laptop sized? tablet sized?

hey wait this just sounds like a laptop but with extra steps
@lyxal ಠ_ಠ
which I think is what I said last time you (or was it Bbrk?) showed us that

@lyxal both!

gosh dang
that's pretty cool

it's also a foldable, so i set it up in the same position

12:01 PM
ayo remember Klein? that was a thing

I just remembered a conversation I had with a coworker at my first job about foldable phones

might revisit it at some point, now that I have seen the light of VSCode and know how an IDE should work

Him: What do you think about these folding phones?
Me: Like the original iPhone 6?
Him: The iPhone 6 could fold?
Me: Not on purpose.

all phones can fold; it's just that most can only do it once

more of a bend really

12:07 PM
I remember that being a big controversy when the iPhone 6 first came out, was that it was bending in peoples pockets

at least it wasn't exploding
that was wack
(side note: @UnrelatedString you have single-handedly added "wack" to my vocabulary, good job)

12:36 PM
@Ginger it was an unrelated string to you that was introduced by UnrelatedString :p

correct

1:05 PM
what a wacky word

@noodleman Yes.
@Ginger Yes!

1:57 PM
@mousetail could you lowercase my first letter in the manually added username? It's a personal preference thing.

2:15 PM
@bobble Oops sorry, I'll fix it in a moment

2:36 PM
@Adám what do I win?

2:52 PM
@Ginger 💻

@Bbrk24 well on that case, I don't do much on cgcc anyway...

hello!

Hen only y people downvoted the strike post
@Simd hey
*Hey only 6 people downvoted the strike post

@Seggan I think everyone can find one reason or another to be mad at SE for this situation, whether it's the policy itself or the bad communication around it

3:13 PM
@Ginger oh I already did

3:23 PM
I hate floating point

@RubenVerg I love APL

what if you use exp instead of math.e **?

@Bbrk24 I'll try

Might still be wrong but

@Adám what does it use?

3:29 PM
Unless you have some symbolic representation of pi, this will probably never be exactly -1

@Seggan Also floating point, but it has both "idioms" (phrases it recognises and special-cases) and a fuzz functionality to shave the sharpest edges off FP issues.

idioms are cheating :)

Hmm

3:30 PM
(idioms in this case means that exp pi times i, with no brackets, works exactly)

Also, Swift’s Double.pi is intentionally not the closest value to pi, but a value one ULP lower so that rounding errors on sine/cosine/tangent don’t put you in the wrong quadrant

@Adám as I said, idioms are cheating :)

It gets you the result you expect, and faster too. What's not to like?

Does it work with variables?

@Adám they can't solve my issue :)

3:31 PM
@Seggan Yes:

@Seggan iirc what it does is interpret star circle as a different function than just the composition of the two which checks for special arguments

3:48 PM
@Seggan Yeah ig the support for them could've been better
IJ gave me weird errors when I tried using them right after they came out
And they don't really help make things simpler

That are nice if you want an access level above package private but below public, but useless otherwise
*they

Does anyone know how to see the assembly produced when you compile a simple cython function?

4:25 PM
You can look at the C file itself (or turn the C into assembly yourself if you specifically need the assembly)
@Seggan internal!
I find it funny that Rust's pub(foo) and Scala's private[foo] do the same thing, but one uses pub and the other private

@user the C file cython produces is ridiculously huge :(

Q: Render text in a slanted ASCII-art font

TimwiGiven a text input such as: THE QUICK BROWN FOX JUMPS OVER THE LAZY DOG render the following output: /\ \ \ / \ / /\/ / / /\ / / ...

Is there anyone with a few minutes and who would be kind enough to tell me if you get the same timings as I do for stackoverflow.com/questions/76407241/… ?

@user kotlin go brrr
im sad kotlin doesnt have package private

5:37 PM
nearly 16% of moderators on the entire network have singed the letter alr

The Monica letter got around 800 signatures, wondering if we'll beat it. 500 after the first "official" day is promising
Not that it's a race

I have a... really weird issue with typescript
every time I build the project it nests a new copy of the output directory inside of itself

Did you exclude the output from the input?

this is after two compiles:
(Imgur not working, frick)
@mousetail good question

@mousetail the real question is, you have to do that?

5:48 PM
Only if you have code at the top level of your repo instead of in a src/ directory or whatever

Yes, the issue of typescript needing to sometimes compile .js file necessitates some way of separating them

@Bbrk24 I have it in a src/ directory

huh

but it is giving this error:
error TS6059: File '/srv/sendthedamnwebsite/public/js/main.js' is not under 'rootDir' '/srv/sendthedamnwebsite/src'. 'rootDir' is expected to contain all source files.
  The file is in the program because:
    Matched by default include pattern '**/*'

yeah set it to "include": "src/**" or w/e

5:52 PM
well, I added an include thing and that fixed it
:/
ok, new issue: getting code in node_modules to build
the TS language server can find the code fine, but since it's not going into public it's obviously not available to the frontend
the example tsconfig.json included this:
"exclude": [
    "node_modules",
    "**/node_modules/*"
]
which might be it, but I'm worried that there's a reason for it to be there
I have tsc and npm set to use ECMAScript modules btw

check your js output. By default I think it transforms esm to cjs

it was doing that, but that caused this error:
> Uncaught ReferenceError: exports is not defined
and if I remove "module": "NodeNext" it complains about not finding the libraries
it might be that the lib doesn't have typings

6:23 PM
using esm works great, I just don't know how to make the node modules appear in the output
are they supposed to be visible? should I have an import map???
send help
will it work if I use a module that has type declarations?
nvm found a different option

Q: qemu: drive with bus=0, unit=0 (index=0) exists

KirtiI am trying to enable trace events using the trace-file on option in qemu. When I executed the following command: sudo qemu-system-x86_64 -drive format=raw,file=/var/lib/libvirt/images/ubuntu-box1-vm-disk1-5G ./build/trace/trace-events-all on It shows the following: qemu-system-x86_64: ./build...

@mousetail never in my life have I needed to do that

user578049
Interesting

@NewPosts look upon this off-topic, ye mighty, and cast close votes

6:39 PM
@RubenVerg Depends on your config, you can disambiguate them in other ways

what's the point of compiling non-external js files in typescript
unless you use it for js only (jsconfig.json etc), in which case you need no build step

no, this also doesn't work
I could use import maps to make it work but then what's the point of installing it at all besides for the benefit of the typechecker?
can someone with more knowledge of TypeScript help me out here? I'm completely stuck

use a bundler like webpack

of course the answer is more tools :p
how do I do that?

speaking from experience, that’s easier than trying to fix it yourself
uhh look it up
my phone is on 10%

6:50 PM
right
WHAT
it worked basically first try
that never happens!

2 hours later…
9:01 PM
when, previous, next, and after seem pretty useful actually...

9:43 PM
AAAAAAAAA
suddenly I'm having more problems!
one of the modules I'm using declares both a class and a namespace named QrScanner and it's making my typechecker shit its pants
(at least I think that's the issue)
wtf do I do

Happens to everyone at a certain age, tell it to wear diapers

Is it just me, or the chat server doesn't recognize my timezone?

it doesnt
apparently caird is the only mod left on this site who is not striking

10:01 PM
@mousetail, I think the datestamps on the open letter broke? Everything is saying June 5 to me.

^

The times are being displayed at GMT.
It's really GMT+9 here.

Not sure what you mean by that? Even people who signed days before June 5 are supposedly "Jun 5"

Just to be 100% clear: I'm not striking because I care more about CGCC and our site health than I do about SE as a whole, or as a company. I wholeheartedly support the messages in the open letter, oppose the new SE policy on AI and oppose the second thing that has only been shared to mods (and I think is on pause atm). Further, I absolutely support my fellow moderators (both on CGCC and across the network) in their strike.
But, having seen this site go through a period with no active moderators before, I believe that me continuing to do my job as a moderator is more necessary to keep CGCC a
10

Wait, it's displayed correctly on my mobile.
Does that mean the NixOS upgrade tempered with it? Dang.

10:11 PM

If SE doesn't change after this strike action, I may give up my diamond, as I don't see a future for the company - and thus the site - if nothing changes

10:33 PM
@cairdcoinheringaahing i agree with your decision

@bobble that's intentional; people requested that all signatures from before the strike started were displayed as the day of the strike

Ah, thanks!
