Q: Continuous knapsack but fast

felipaThe input for the continuous knapsack problem is as follows. For each item 1...n we are given a positive weight and profit. Overall we are also given a positive capacity which is the maximum weight we can carry. The goal is to pick items so that the profit is maximized without exceeding the prof...

It's not too far of a flight from here, too bad I can't just go over there :p

@RedwolfPrograms well you see, if you somehow managed to change your nationality to Australian, I'm sure we'd let you in
Admittedly, you'd probably have to take a mandatory 14 day holiday in a hotel,
But that wouldn't be too bad :p
I mean, sure, you have to pay for it yourself, and sure, it's actually self-isolation meaning you can't leave the the hotel

It'd still be better than this place lol

wait so what you're telling me is that the 2-week covid quarantine is actually... enforced upon entering australia???? :o

8:07 AM
@hyper-neutrino pretty much
And iirc you get in trouble if you don't

like what sort of trouble / what happens

You pay a fine
maybe jail time
I'm not really sure

Gov'ts: "If only there was some way to prevent COVID"
Australia: "How about making people actually follow the rules?"
Gov'ts: "If only there was some way to prevent COVID"

hm ok. in canada idk exactly how it works so i'm not sure either but i'm p sure it's kinda sketchy and you maybe pay a fine and under some conditions you might just only need to stay for 3 days or smth

@JoKing is this roughly accurate, seeing as how you're in the part of the state which is becoming a hotspot again?

8:09 AM
IMO canada overall's been... bad with handling covid. like really bad

Hawaii's actually pretty strict about COVID stuff, they're almost as good as Australia
Of course the population is significantly smaller

@lyxal (by part of the state, I mean Sydney in general)
@RedwolfPrograms laughs in covid resurfacing in one of our capital cities

@lyxal i'm pretty sure there is jail time

I got a cold the other day, from my sister. First time since 2019 I think.
And "masks don't work" :p

either that or you get deported

8:13 AM
I suppose 55 active cases is still better than what the rest of the world is experiencing though

it's a lot easier to do in a country with no land borders, i'm sure canada's getting screwed by dumb Americans illegally crossing the border

Yeah that's true too. It's way easier to manage a virus when your borders are water

canada was primarily getting screwed by planes entering the country due to airlines not being closed AFAICT - but i'm not sure
but yes, having land borders is definitely trickier

Imagine having your airlines closed. Made by oh wait didn't they recently stop our travel bubble with New Zealand?

you should build a wall or something

8:15 AM
l o l
fun fact: my city now tops the province in new daily cases, even surpassing the greater toronto area (the previous hotspot by far) which has a much higher population and population density...

And make the Americans pay for it :p

Anyway, gtg o/
I'll try to check in again tomorrow

@RedwolfPrograms o/

Okay, go and enjoy sleeping lol
@JoKing haha you're in an area declared a hotspot by the Queensland government :p

yuppers

8:21 AM
But then again, so is the entirety of Greater Sydney

every thing i was going to do this week has been cancelled

@JoKing oh no
what happened

i was actually planning to go to the shopping centre where the first case was found

@Razetime Annastacia Palaszczuk, the absolute epic gamer, declared not just the city Sydney, but all places under the scope of Sydney a covid hotspot in relation to entry into Queensland
Mind you this includes areas with absolutely no covid

our government is currently staging reopening phases

8:24 AM
@hyper-neutrino for the first time or is this after subsequent snap lockdowns?

@lyxal well we had an "extended spring break" which became a "postponed school reopening" which became "the whole school year is online" and then lockdown, stage 1 - ? of reopening, "emergency shutdown", phase 1 - ? of reopening, whatever they named the other lockdown, and then like some color coding, and now more stages of reopening

Wow, that sounds, uh, complicated
We got the whole country reopened with re-lockdowns as needed
In a period of a few months starting in roughly May last year

see your government seems like
somewhat competent

In relation to covid? Yes

well specifically around the pandemic, yes
idk about other things :P

8:31 AM
Honestly, idk about the other things either lol
I mean, it definitely helps that we only have roughly 25 million people
I envy @Ausername though: their government had it way easier than us
You think we're remote? NZ is even more so than us

that's fair enough :p

i wish they wouldn't be so quick to reopen

the exact opposite problem most people have with SO :p
but yeah I agree
like isn't multiple consecutive emergency lockdowns an indication that maybe... ya shouldn't have reopened that fast in the first place...
me: mm yes with these vaccines, in combation with wearing masks, distancing, and restricting travel, we can probably cut down / nearly eliminate coronavirus
government: yes we have vaccines now be free. oh wait everyone has the delta variant now

What is the latest version of Java
cause my computer sir is saying "8, is the latest versoin of Java"

@JoKing have you ever seen this?

8:43 AM
@lyxal have you seen this

@PyGamer0 yes, and I didn't need to click

ok

@lyxal "What's the most important thing in Australian culture? Lying to other people about Australian culture", perfect

CMQ: Which esolang has Errors; traceback; error handling

java
3

8:59 AM
java is an esolang?

hi everyone

from the front page of esolangs wiki:
> programming languages designed to be unique, difficult to program in, or just plain weird.

@hyper-neutrino lol

lol java is esolang
@PyGamer0 you implement one

@hyper-neutrino wow, it's all three, amazing

9:00 AM
well my computer sir is saying JAVA is a SIMPLE language

what??
Java is simple?

apparently from my computer book YES

you said your teacher said it

You can't just say something is such-and-such to make it be that (unless you're God).

@wasif the teacher says everything on the book

9:05 AM
Well, you could say 1+1=3 too, but you'd be wrong.

but we all know that 10 = 0

mod 10, yes.

@Adám Well I can prove 1=3

Java is a terse stack-based language designed especially for inductive logic programming.

sorry 1+1=3

9:08 AM
I can prove that 1+3=2

everyone can prove any x+y=z

@wasif multiply both sides by 0

I can prove that 1+2>3

no if you need to multiply both sides of equations you need to multiply with a number that is not 0
@PyGamer0 ^

@Adám how?
@wasif ok then multiply both sides by (1-1)
or infinity

9:11 AM
the proofs are made like they appearently look possible

@PyGamer0 Try it!

lol

@Adám wait how

;-)
@PyGamer0 Better?

the secret is APL operators are evaluated from right to left
so 2>3 gets evaluated first
and it is 0
and added with 1 is 1
;-)

9:15 AM
@wasif Strictly speaking, APL operators are actually executed left to right, but APL functions are executed right to left.

yes
i am not a nerd

Also, APL's execution matches how people tend to speak too.

bah, someone doesn't like compressed lookup tables

who?

@Neil someone downvoted an answer of yours?
Better now?

9:31 AM
@lyxal We're in level 2 tho :p

huh, the downvote mysteriously vanished!

CMQ: Least favorite tag?

strange thing though is that the last digit of my rep didn't change

never mind, I clicked in the wrong place

9:33 AM
@Ausername If I see or on a question, I won't even bother to read it
In a more "general" version, I'm not usually a fan of challenges

@Neil it wasn't me

@Ausername If I see or on a question, I won't even bother to read it.

@Ausername , I've got 220 answers but only 5150 rep

CMC: Given two integers a and b output the last digit of a to the power b. Your program should work on TIO (as in, display the answer without timing out) for all inputs up to 2^32

@Ausername actually it's really , because it's often really just a but more difficult for no obvious reason

9:36 AM
@cairdcoinheringaahing You just said you hate

@Ausername if I see on a challenge, chances are I won't read it properly

Um....

@cairdcoinheringaahing pow(a,b,10) python

@cairdcoinheringaahing 1 byte: 0. It's the last digit in base a of course...

et in vyxal

9:37 AM
@Ausername I mean, usually it's because I'm too busy trying to fgitw an answer and I accidentally skip info lol :p

@Ausername Yes, because I think it's best used to untrivialise trivial challenges. Most of the time, it's used on interesting challenges but the OP wants to prevent a slower approach that isn't that boring

Yay, more Indonesian Gambling Spam!

Me too
@RecursiveCo. Yay!

I guess I should amend that to !b, in case b is 0...

@cairdcoinheringaahing So we need powmod

9:38 AM
aspodiozixcjiax? now they're just keyboard hashing.

@Neil Well, I suppose so :P

wait, I can do better: 1. This is in base a-1, so always works

One tag they did get right was "game".

And hyper's asleep so they can't nuke it...
Caird can you nuke the nmp

@Ausername Just flag and downvote, it'll be dealt with but slightly slower than if HN's around

9:39 AM
I have a feeling these Indonesian people monitor when mods sleep then post right after that, this happened the last time, hyper fell asleep then IGS came up

@cairdcoinheringaahing I did.

Worst part is that the poster's identicon looks like mine. I do not want to be associated with such posts

@RecursiveCo. This is why NMP can be useful.

@Ausername hehe my spam flag got accepted

9:40 AM
Oof, that's a hassle to do on mobile

Not when I use desktop site on mobile by default

CMC: Given an integer i, output the 7th root of it and then square the number.

Uh...

@PyGamer0 So output, square and terminate without outputting again?

wdym

9:43 AM
Do we output the squared number

@PyGamer0 ⎕*7÷2

take input > get the 7throot > square it > print it

@cairdcoinheringaahing this is hilarious

oops should be 2÷7

9:43 AM
n=>n**(2/7)

@PyGamer0 7Ėe²

I feel like something was lost in translation
I probably shouldn't have put it through 20 different languages.

@Ausername 100s of years of experience

@PyGamer0 The order doesn't matter.

You can only play your first game at a casino.

9:46 AM
That's great

> IDN players can play online and other games

@PyGamer0 dzaima/APL: 7√×⍨

Online is a game now?

I have a challenge here

> "even with hundreds of years", you can only play your first game at a casino".

Well, looks like that person didn't learn anything from the 300 years of experience

9:46 AM
@RecursiveCo. well aren't I rebellious playing hold'em on my Nintendo DS at an age where I probably shouldn't have been doing so

CMC: rotate the string sns n 180 degrees
and for the second part

@StackMeter no
I'd be a sussy baka if I did that

@StackMeter hmm seems kinda sus to me

Yes

@lyxal Super Mario Bros literally has a casino "mode" where you can play poker and other casino games :P

9:48 AM
CMacroC: rotate a generic string 180 degrees:

there should be a bot that automatically deletes IGS

That's called me and hyper :P

Or just a bot to filter out tags that don't match
@cairdcoinheringaahing Hello Robot

@cairdcoinheringaahing the one I played was called Clubhouse Games, and that was when I was around 7

9:49 AM
allowed characters: wmuniopqbdv^zxshjrl!#.',

@StackMeter Example case?

@cairdcoinheringaahing JavaScript: a=>b=>(a%10)**(b%4)%10

@PyGamer0 There's one that almost does that: Smokey. It auto casts 3 (?) spam flags on any spam it detects on the network

@cairdcoinheringaahing how are you a bot

@Neil Doesn't that fail on big numbers?

9:50 AM
@Neil You're missing > in a=b

@PyGamer0 I'm 40% zinc, 40% copper, 40% titanium, 40% dolomite and I have a 0.003% nickel impurity that makes me me
7
@Neil Ooh, nice

Oh so there's a bot behind that dog you carry everywhere

Patch has legs, he can (and does) walk everywhere :P

@Adám question only asked for inputs up to 2^32 and this works for inputs up to 2^53

@cairdcoinheringaahing hmm 40+40+40+40+0.003 ≠ 100

9:52 AM
@Neil Oh. I should have looked closer. You mod first.

you are lying

@PyGamer0 Not in base 6.2425

you can use 4n and 10n if you want big int arithmetic of course

@RecursiveCo. bruh

9:54 AM
@lyxal Can you modify the corpus to find the least used elements?

@cairdcoinheringaahing That's a lot of wasted storage

@Ausername Yeah, but practically everyone's already seen it, it's not that interesting anymore :P

True...
Guys, what do you think?

10:10 AM
Wow
Anyone want to invent the Nickroll? With Nickelback songs?

Be honest, did it get you?

Now that got me. It would've been more obvious if it was a youtube link as I now routinely check such links in TNB

I actually made that a long time ago

CMC: Given a string, output 'rickroll' if it is the video ID of the song and nothing otherwise.
(without the quotes)

According to caird, the first time I used it, "That's very clever, but I didn't even look at the link"

10:14 AM
It what?

(Accidentally pressed enter)

At first I thought you were going to admire tsh again as you always do.

@RecursiveCo. Hi

Bh!

10:18 AM
my challenge should be all correct now
@RecursiveCo. what sort of worked example did you want?

Just like your first example but with a longer explanation.

OK
@RecursiveCo. how is the worked example now?

Great!

now I just need some answers :)
a positive vote count!

10:34 AM
@felipa i see you've been on this site for a long while!

@RecursiveCo. do you think you will write an answer?
@Razetime I am ooooold :)
codegolf.stackexchange.com/questions/10713/… was still my greatest challenge

you may want to clarify that a bit more
since "as close as possible to a reference" isn't really a specification

it's from 7 years ago
I am more interested in today's challenge

never too late to make a question better :)

@Razetime :) Please feel free to suggest constructive edits

10:37 AM
I am considering answering it in K but i'm not sure whether I should add a computer player
so maybe have the following:

the good old days

two paddles, rectangular, must be on each side
point must be displayed for each player
and maybe remove the requirement for a computer player
that's it
ball must bounce at angle of 90 degrees to the direction it was moving in, maybe
or any other simplistic logic
that should work as a spec
@felipa btw where's this
ah the continuous knapsack

yes that one
if you can code breakout in half an hour then that is cool too :)

sadly that is closed
popularity contests don't get much love nowadays

I know... all the best things get closed

10:41 AM
haha

anyway this looks similar to the problem anush posted a little while ago

look at the number of answers to the recent closed questions!
@Razetime what does?

non-greedy solution to fractional knapsaxck
@felipa your new question

@Razetime you mean in this chat? They didn't post a challenge I don't think

10:42 AM
@felipa it was a CMC

@Razetime right. We communicated about this

@RecursiveCo. So we have to do image detection?

does anyone know a good way to add some words to the bottom of a video (on linux)?

@Adám he's looking for the string dQw4w9WgXcQ, the youtube id
@felipa flowblade is a tiny app for that

@Razetime oh wow. Thanks I will look that up

10:45 AM
it's pretty fast and works on most linuxes

it exists for ubuntu!
@Razetime how do I add text in flowblade?I have installed and run it

@felipa video

@Razetime thanks

11:22 AM
@Ausername I always check where the links go before clicking, and last time I checked stack exchange doesn't use surge lol
Also, the link doesn't look like the usual answer link format
@Ausername I don't know how it actually works - I just download the data and press run

11:59 AM
@lyxal where do you run the corpus
I mean how can I run the corpus myself locally

12:20 PM
@cairdcoinheringaahing he's not the messiah!
I have discovered my new favourite set of Unicode characters: 🯰🯱🯲🯳🯴🯵🯶🯷🯸🯹

@wasif I'll put it into a gist - I saved it while it was still available

Yeah, why did 2x-1 delete their account?

that's one of life's great mysteries

stasoids back!

@pxeger why they delete their account has been an unanswered question for around a year now

12:26 PM
hmm

@pxeger in other words, it's not the first time this has happened

@lyxal Any theories?

@user all theories I originally had were discredited due to the circumstances not fitting the expected pattern
so no
Anyone know how to make favicons work?
because it's refusing to work

still not working
go to the vyxal interpreter and tell me what you see as a favicon.
@pxeger ^

12:30 PM
nuffink

what does the caching site say?

favicon.ico gives a 404
@lyxal ?

@pxeger shouldiblamecaching
is this not how to favicon? <link rel="shortcut icon" type="image/jpg" href="https://github.com/Lyxal/Vyxal/blob/master/templates/favicon.png">

@lyxal it says "It's not working? Should I blame caching? YES. [advice may be invalid due to caching]"

@pxeger huh. intersting

12:32 PM
I think it has to be .ico
And image/jpg does not match the .png extension
And https://github.com/Lyxal/Vyxal/blob/master/templates/favicon.png is not the image URL itself; it's the GitHub page for the file
Try https://github.com/Lyxal/Vyxal/raw/master/templates/favicon.png

yes
that works
as you can tell i'm very bad with html

why didn't you just google it btw lol
111
Q: What is the best practice for creating a favicon on a web site?

bytecode77Question What is the best practice for creating a favicon on a web site? and is an .ico file with both 16x16 and 32x32 images better than a .png file with 16x16 only? Could the right method preferred today not be working in reasonably old browsers? Method 1 Placing a file named favicon.ico i...

Top result

@pxeger i did
heck, your linked answer didn't show up at all

huh

I use DuckDuckGo

12:36 PM
oh I googled <link rel="shortcut icon"

see my term was "how to add favicon to site"

12:56 PM
shower thought: "undoable" means both "cannot be done" and "can be undone"

no one I know uses "undoable" to mean "cannot be done".
"it's not doable" sounds more natural
or even better, "it's not possible"
