@RedwolfPrograms I was actually just thinking about this, and wondering about organising an event where users "nominate" a question they think went "underappreciated" and people spend a day/week/month/lifetime trying to answer that question
Something similar to LotM

@RedwolfPrograms that's just how it works lol. Triviality oftentimes pays well

There was something similar for answers one time, wasn't there?
I agree there should be something similar for questions

If we can come to a community consensus and have a list of sandbox posts that we're sure should be deleted and have been independently reviewed by multiple people in the community, I'd be willing to spend some time to just run down the list and delete them all.

@Lyxal Well, its currently at 7750 answers, so I think it's passed 3k :P

@cairdcoinheringaahing yeah but that's including deleted posts
for <10k users like me it's only 2956

12:07 AM
every time i think about privileges I still by default think of the pre-design thresholds lmao
just habit

many of us don't see the extra 4794 answers y'all see

Deleted posts matter :P My phone crashes whenever I try to use the Sandbox. My phone. Not the SE app, but my full phone
@HyperNeutrino Same :( I remember, I got the "View site analytics" about a month before the new rep levels were announced, so it was heartbreaking to see my privileges drop so much

@cairdcoinheringaahing Ouch. that sucks lol. yeah when we got our design I was already 20k+ I think so I just needed a bit more to get site analytics which I still haven't really used I think

@HyperNeutrino Personally, I found them quite interesting but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

What all do the site analytics let you see?

12:09 AM
IIRC site traffic, where people came to the site from etc.
FYI at 5k you get full access to all privileges on non-graduated sites, compared to 25k on graduated ones

@cairdcoinheringaahing so then how do we get rid of deleted posts if deleting them doesn't actually delete them?

@Lyxal Personally, I'd like a new Sandbox but I can understand the issues with that, so that's a question I'll be asking the community if we decide we want to clear up the Sandbox

I don't think there is a solution because I don't believe you can destroy posts.
You'd likely have to create a new sandbox in that case, and I'm not sure that's necessarily great. Crashing on mobile is a bit of a yikes though...

How does that even happen? Is it not paginated on mobile?

Nope
Full list of answers

12:19 AM
That seems like a pretty serious design flaw...is there a main meta post about it?

Its why you might see me online for a couple of hours but I've not addressed your Sandbox question: I have to get to my computer to do that
@RedwolfPrograms SE stopped maintaining their app about 2 years ago IIRC
From the on Mother Meta:
> The mobile app is NO LONGER SUPPORTED. This tag is for the official Stack Exchange mobile applications only. The app is available for iOS and Android on the App Store and Google Play store.

Well. rip mobile then

just use browser lol
thats how i roll

About a week ago, all usernames in comments went black (instead of normal blue) and the Users page is filled with black bars, so it's getting even more buggy as time goes on :/
@Lyxal Man, I hate mobile browser SE
Editing/answering/asking is so bad compared to every other way

12:24 AM
@cairdcoinheringaahing well at least browser has chat

Actually, chat is probably the only part of the app that isn't buggy :P

I have the app but almost never use it; I guess I get notifications on it? That's about it, but I check the site often so it doesn't even matter.

@cairdcoinheringaahing Only since January because time no longer has meaning
@HyperNeutrino Yeah, I only use it for notifications and to check HNQ
I totally don't spend ~6 hours a day sat at my computer "working" while actually browsing PPCG
Although I do have my new sets of dice to keep me occupied when PPCG's quiet :P

I unfortunately don't have the time for that anymore but I still spend a good like 2-3 hours lmao

@HyperNeutrino It's an advantage of a) working from home and b) working with very slow software :P
Also, I just clicked on the "Random" button from ^ comic and got one that, as an 18 y/o, I'm not happy how relevant this is:

12:51 AM
I clicked random and got one that also applies to me

Just post the URL
@RedwolfPrograms Big into kayaking?

No, big into traveling through time and realizing that it's really cool and there's a lot of future

Fair enough :P

Whoa, what are the odds I click random five times and end up back on the first one

Relevant to everyone:
xkcd.com/627 (y'all click if you want)

12:57 AM
Also relevant:

A couple of comics were ok, but let's try not to clog up chat with large images
After this, I'd recommend posting any more comics as just URLs

Yeah, definitely. I'm actually going to edit mine

Yeah, we all (generally) like XKCD, but there's no need to fully take up people's screens :)

I wish there was a way to say "hey, SE, make this image medium sized"
Other than downloading it, resizing it, and posting an imgur link

Well, here's one I can't relate to
Python gang

1:02 AM
Oh man. I'm usually Python gang, but I'm using VBA in my current job :/
Although, tbh, I'm more Jelly gang then anything
"My link is executing"

I'm Javascript gang. "My code isn't doing anything because you're using an outdated browser and nobody enforces any standards"

But have you made sure it works for IE2???
3

Anyway I gotta go make dinner, I'll be back in a little while.

1:42 AM
@HyperNeutrino if you're Keg or Vyxal gang then it's "my code is transpiling" lol

Write a loop of compilers. Then your code can be compiling forever.

Q: Shortest Code to Legitimately Slack Off

Esolanging FruitI'm a developer, and I don't feel like doing my work. I know from XKCD that the best excuse for slacking off is that your code's compiling. 2:00 AM
I just noticed this, but it seems that a link pointing to a deleted answer will fail to be "Secure" according to Chrome
example codegolf.meta.stackexchange.com/questions/1061/… (for those who can see deleted posts; it's just an outdated meta consensus)
is this new and is this happening for anyone else?

not sure what determines whether it is unsecure. for example, this deleted answer is still secure

Huh. Not for me... that's kinda weird
does the link I pasted show as insecure for you too?

@HyperNeutrino yeah. For me, anything on the second page shows up as insecure, while page one is fine

What's the blue number next to my icon? It says "new spam/offensive" or something and links to a room I've never been in with people I've never known

@JoKing Huh. that's really odd, well I have no clue what that could be, maybe could make a main meta post but idk if it's too much of a problem
@RedwolfPrograms the blue number indicates flags
I forget how flags specifically work but anyone with 10k+ network rep can see chat redflags and address them

2:14 AM
Ohhh, I didn't know that. Never realized I was above 10k network rep in the first place, actually.

Reputation gain creeps up on you pretty quickly :P It must've been a long time ago when I reached network-wide 10k so I don't really remember the moment but it was definitely a bit of a surprise
Maybe the flag was already resolved by the time I checked chat again but I wonder why I didn't see it
does it only notify people on the site that the room belongs to?

Maybe you have to be a member of whatever site it's associated with? It looked like it might be worldbuilding related.

That would explain lol.
I remember one time I was online like within a month of getting 10k network rep I think? and there were like 8 flags and I was just kinda like
o_O

Didn't really seem spam or offensive, just looked like some people arguing. I didn't read much because it was just a discussion between two people and I didn't want to seem like I was spying on them :p

Huh, odd. yeah some people use chat flags for stuff they just don't like and it's annoying for people to deal with but, what can you do, that happens..
does chat also have the thing where six flags instantly destroy a message?

2:23 AM
Not sure, but I doubt they'd remove that for chat. Upon further inspection, the flag was on a somewhat heated discussion about the viability of living in salt mines if the earth was teleported away from the sun. Only on worldbuilding...

uhhhh. well that's certainly a very intriguing topic to be having a heated debate about
though I guess a heated debate would be a good substitute if the sun's not nearby xD

1 hour later…
3:33 AM
Anyone been to six flags before?

Never been, but I do have a fun fact about it: the reason it's called "six flags" is because it's headquartered in Texas, which has had six flags fly over it: Spain, France, Mexico, Republic of Texas, Confederacy, and United States.

Golfing pro tip: wait a few days before posting your explanation, so you don't have to keep changing it when people suggest golfs.

But then you get fewer upvotes in the long run

CMC: What formatting methods do you prefer for your code explanations?
@JohnDvorak it's a worthy trade imo

fair point

@Razetime That would be a CMP or CMQ.

CMQ: What formatting methods do you prefer for your code explanations?

6:45 AM
no, no, no, it is a challenge to find some method in our innate madness.

back to CMC then? @Adám

Also, late congrats to you and the other new mods!

Kevin CruijssenIntroduction: You're a key maker, and want to access something from a safe that has a lock. Unfortunately, the key to that lock is lost, so you'll have to make a new one. Q: Shortest C program which compiles to largest file size

LebsterChallenge This challenge is to create the shortest C program which compiles to the largest file size. Your score for this challenge is Size of compiled binary in bytes / Length of program source code The winner of this challenge will be the person with the highest score. Don't really know what to...

@NewMainPosts aka who can generate the largest size array

Bowling pro tip: use something like Lenguage or Unary lol
@Razetime I've used a good variety but I mainly use 3 methods: 1. Character by character walk through (with comments) (either aligned under a full copy of the program or column aligned), 2. A more narrative approach (actually writing big chunks of explanation) and 3. List the steps the program takes and the characters that do so

7:47 AM
wow a proper answer
nice

@Lyxal this wins funniest answer award

@Zgarb Took a hot minute, but it's unfrozen now

8:09 AM
@JoKing Thanks!

@Lyxal did you make this manually?

@Razetime hand made in Ms Word

oh

8:26 AM
maybe there's some utility for writing these

It'll never be able to fully chunk code as we intend it
But that could make for an interesting challenge
Last time I gave a challenge suggestion, you got 18 upvotes

oh lol yeah
friendliness pellets!

9:09 AM
@Lyxal ok, lets have three inputs:
the code
the deltas at which the code needs to be split
and the explanatory string for it
and indentation depth

That's exactly what I was thinking

nvm, four

Post it and you'll get a ton of updoots

this is somehow more high effort than actually writing the thing manually smh

Lol

9:14 AM
you writing it or me?

Yours if you want!

@HyperNeutrino Chat flags notify every 10k+ user in chat, but that means they get resolved very quickly, so you never see them

12:39 PM
@Razetime yes, thanks, that was the challenge I was thinking of, even though it wasn't what I remembered

1:06 PM
lol imagine posting explanations for your answers

1:23 PM
@rak1507 What's wrong with posting explanations? It gets you more votes and makes your answer more interesting and useful to other golfers

It takes so much effort

But it helps other people and makes your answer better. Golfing takes a lot of work too, but you wouldn't post an ungolfed answer I'm sure.

The way I see it: if an answerer isn't willing to put in the effort to explain their answer, why should I put in the effort to upvote it?

You can't edit with less than 2k rep on meta sites. Is it an edit one of us could do for you?

Ah, probably

and bubbler's bounty isn't community wiki.
you should comment on the post or @ him here.

Ok

1:37 PM
I don't get that. We have a Suggested Edits review queue for meta, what's special about meta posts that mean we can't just do the same as main?

yeah that's kinda weird I wonder if there's a specific reason they don't want edit suggestions

There are only 85 suggested edits on meta over all time. Probably tag edits.
(Compare that with over 12k on main)

Yep, they're all tag wiki edits
Last one was Jul 26

Is there a way to get notifications when there's something in the review queues? I always want to help but there's never anything there

1:53 PM
Thanks!

You install it and whenever there's a review task available, it opens it in a new tab with a little magnifying glass icon
You have to keep a tab open on the reviews page, but beyond that it works great
It's why I'm in 6 5 of the "most recent reviews" things

I stole your spot on suggested edits :p

Well, you were reviewing my edits :P

Feels a little weird to be reviewing posts from someone with double my rep :p

I tend to try to ignore rep as much as I can. Helps me treat users by how I know them, rather than by some score. e.g. I've known HN for 3 years, training over in JHT (same with Mr Xcoder), and they both have loads more rep than me (and a mod diamond), but I view them as the people/personas they are, rather than by some number
But I know the feeling :P
Someone with 5k rep can review the tag edits for someone with 19.9k, which is definitely a weird feeling :P

2:00 PM
I haven't spent much time interacting with other users before a few weeks ago, so I'm starting to get to know y'all I guess

lol nice to meet ya

Wait, does y'all sound unusual to y'all? It's just the normal second person plural pronoun where I live :p

I never say it but I type it on occasion
But then again, "y'all" sounds weird in pretty much most non-American accents

Nah I don't mind it

It's not something I usually see but it's not too weird or anything :P

2:06 PM
@RedwolfPrograms It doesn't help that no one is suggesting edits :/
And that my internet is awful, so I keep missing them

I feel like our site especially doesn't have much room for edits because if you have an objectively good improvement to a post, you are supposed to comment it whereas normally it would make sense to edit the answer directly if you know it's 100% an improvement lol

Yeah, the "what can/can't be edited" is much stricter here
Most of the rejected edits I've done are for new/anonymous users trying to golf the code

All of my approved edits/edits I've approved are either on tags or questions

most of my edits are probably formatting fixes especially on failed answer headers or questions that failed to use code block markdown correctly lol

@RedwolfPrograms i would be weirded out if i heard someone say it out loud irl
reading it isn't so bad

2:17 PM
Where I live it's super normal, but it's not like we say it in a super thick Texas accent and wear cowboy hats
My school had us fill out "personality tests" for some sort of career day thing and I got a 0 on everything...am I that boring???

2:49 PM
uhhh
personality tests arent supposed to grade a personality.
they just need to categorize you personality
@RedwolfPrograms for all i know this is a bunch of hogwash meant to scare students into being slave workers

I think it was a software glitch, everybody else got numbers around 20-50

hmm odd

maybe you have so much of a personality that it overflowed xD

must have been an unsigned short

also most personality tests you can get for free online are relatively meaningless anyway

2:58 PM
Evidently :p

@HyperNeutrino Your latest answer, I think, falls under this deadline-less bounty of mine if you'd like to claim it

Oh, it does. Thanks for letting me know :D I'll leave a comment then

Don't worry about that :P

okay :P

I just wanted to check that you did want to claim it, I'll start the bounty in a bit :P

3:03 PM
alright thank you very much!!
TBH it's not an answer i'm currently overly proud of but it's okay and i'll definitely see if i can golf it down more

How hard is a non-brute force answer?

As with all long Jelly answers, I feel like there are a few tricks to shave a couple of bytes off, but nothing is particularly obvious at first scan

I think I could do one in Python with moderate difficultly or possibly relative ease but it might not be very golfy
@cairdcoinheringaahing well I tried one thing which was to remove all the S$s and move summation to the end and it ended up changing the length by exactly 0 bytes :P

I definitely think the two ³ should be able to be removed, but tio isn't loading for me, so I can't test it :/

oh rip :/ yeah I think I can probably get rid of those too but I can't immediately see how
I remember when we were first learning Jelly I think someone liked using the $ and dyad combiner a lot and someone liked using the ^3/^4/^8/^9 things a lot, I can't remember which one I was and who the other person is
I found a way to change ØAœ!³L¤ into ØAœ!L}¥ for a total of... 0 bytes again ._.

3:15 PM
@rak1507 Made my post community wiki, so now you should be able to edit in your bounty claim.

4:25 PM
@JoKing @HyperNeutrino Can we get a featured tag on the Language of the Month for October? codegolf.meta.stackexchange.com/questions/19386/…

sure; do we usually feature LOTMs? I'm not sure what [featured] tag is exactly meant for, I thought it was only to highlight things like elections and consensuses or w/e

Not sure about this, but doesn't the Community user auto-feature popular posts?
> A special moderator-only tag to mark important meta discussions.
From the tag wiki, if that helps

@cairdcoinheringaahing I noticed that in the tag description but I'm not sure if LotM is considered "important" enough versus other things that might absolutely require community attention or immediate action

As far as I can tell, the LotM post wasn't featured last month

I agree it shouldn't be featured, if it gains enough popularity (which it should) it'll be irrelevant anyway

4:37 PM
I just don't know if other LotMs have been featured because I don't think tag edits are logged in history
If LotM is usually featured or [featured] tag can be used on community events/things like this then I will gladly add it, but I agree with Redwolf and I think it's not really necessary and should probably be used specifically to draw attention to things the community needs to know
uhhhh... maybe I'm dumb but
where is the unprotect button? Hello World got auto protected again and I can't find the button to unprotect it

Underneath the question (with the share, edit, close links)

wait... i found it it's in the mod tools section so i don't see the regular button
that's why i couldn't find it :P
@cairdcoinheringaahing Okay, thanks. Why do I recall that tag edits from users that can directly edit without suggestion won't show up in history? Maybe I'm thinking of something else.

Community edits are sometimes ignored I think

oh okay

I keep getting AncientSwordRage mixed up with Dominic Van Essen cause their pfps are so similar :/

Any name ideas for a hexagon based esolang?

hexagony

dammit
thank you xD

@RedwolfPrograms Hex

Creative, but it's already taken :p

@RedwolfPrograms permutohedron

4:49 PM
@RedwolfPrograms What kind of esolang?

although that implies a broader shape

It uses the vertexes of a hexagonal lattice for operators

@RedwolfPrograms maybe permuto<sup>3</sup>
cause a hexagon is a third order permutohedron

It uses self modification for some of its control flow, but also transistor-like operations

4:50 PM
how do i superscript here
why is the markdown different smh

oh rip. yeah many good old questions eventually just get buried under all the new stuff and kinda forgotten forever lol

Yeah, but there are a lot of good questions which are active for ~1 month then get forgotten about
And even more which would be perfectly up to our standards after a quick edit by someone who knows that they're doing
