So I hear there are some mathematically inclined folks in here
I am in quite a pinch, as I have an assignment due soon and a brainfart to go along with it
In diff eq, I know the homogeneous and particular solutions are both independently solutions as well as together
I've gotten down to a general solution with three unknown constants, but I only have two initial conditions, and I'm wondering if I can separately solve for the constants in the two solutions

Q: Parallel resistance in electric circuits in C

JohnWhat are some tips on how to shorten this code even further? The code is meant to compute the parallel resistance of an electric circuit. Using scanf float r;main(){float a;scanf("%f",&a);r+=1/a;printf("%f",1/r);main();} Using command-line arguments #include<stdlib.h> float r;main(c,v)char**...

@Jono2906 I have answer-spammed this challenge, so if this rule was wrong, I need to delete all of my answers.

CMC: φ-φπ

Phi minus phi pi

@A̲̲ In what language?

@Adám In English Mathematical notation.

@Adám Arguably Wolfram Language? :P

1:51 PM
@A̲̲ The English programming language is generally not allowed on CGCC.
@A̲̲ No that'd be what I wrote.
To clarify: return approximately -3.46517, but with your normal precision.

@Adám Japt, 7 bytes yikes this is long

@Quintec Wow, that's one cool looking Japt interpreter.

Shaggy is awesome

Next week I'm gonna be interviewing an undergrad for a research position. (This isn't exactly a job, but kinda is because they'd be receiving course credit.) This particular person has an appropriate major (they're a neuro major and this is a neuro lab) but they lack coding experience though, which is an issue when coding is 95% of the actual work. So that brings me to my question: how can one judge innate coding talent / self-learning potential in an interview?

2:05 PM
@PhiNotPi Look at their reputation on CGCC during the interview.

@PhiNotPi Btw, my CMC was in honour of you. Can you spot how?

φ(-π) is arguably more appropriate.

phi(1-pi)

@A̲̲ How does "not" translate to subtraction?
@PhiNotPi exactly.
@A̲̲ Why the odd username? How about Ⓐ?

@Adám A username must at least be 3 unicode characters...

2:11 PM
@A̲̲ Ah, I didn't know. And I suppose zero-width spaces are banned?

I guess so.
Maybe I should try to change to ... I haven't tried it yet.
(Or insert 0-width spaces between A and _.)

CMC: Simple super/subscript "TᴇX"-to-Unicode — you have to handle a single level of ^ and _ with single digits and multi-digits in braces. E.g. 3x_{10}^23x₁₀² and 10_211_210₂11₂

ngn
@PhiNotPi industry has been trying to find out how for decades and they still do it (wrong) by giving silly puzzles at interviews

@PhiNotPi You could ask "How would you approach the problem …" and let them talk you through their thought process.

CMC: Simple italic-to-unicode - You have to handle one level of italic asterisks and convert the text to unicode italics. E.g. *fM* -> ƒℳ

Q: 𝘜𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘰𝘥𝘦 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻 F̲o̲r̲m̲a̲t̲t̲e̲r̲ (*Unicode* **Markdown** __Formatter__)

pfgIf you cannot see this post, you can use this image Your task is to create a markdown parser that outputs Unicode. It should support 𝗯𝗼𝗹𝗱, 𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘤, 𝙼𝚘𝚗𝚘𝚜𝚙𝚊𝚌𝚎, and 𝗎̲𝗇̲𝖽̲𝖾̲𝗋̲𝗅̲𝗂̲𝗇̲𝖾̲. Every alphabetical character should be converted into Math Sans. This includes the c...

@A̲̲ What are the rules for beginning and ending italics? All asterisks swap mode?

Since it is a duplicate...
CMC: Find the first unanswered CMC in TNB.
CMC: Implement a left-going marquee. [] indicate the range of a marquee. E.g. a[abcd] Generates a marquee. Steps after N seconds (N is a decimal less than 1 which is set by you): abcda -> acdab -> adabc -> aabcd and then loops back forever.

@A̲̲ It isn't. It is significantly easier.

@Adám This is a subset of the challenge.

@A̲̲ Not a bad thing.

So only one is a non-duplicate CMC.

anyone doing AOC2019?

@Poke Yeah, a lot of people have been discussing it on the discord server

4:09 PM
just what i didn't need... another discord channel
lulz

A month ago it was ded™, but with the recent anti-SE sentiment floating around it's been revived

have there been any updates on that
sometimes i look at meta

4:30 PM
@Poke yes

@DJMcMayhem Are you saying there's discord with SE?

Ha, apparently

Seriously though, Discord is like an alternative location for CGCC chat?

@Adám Kind of?
It's an unofficial server for PPCG people, and some people prefer to user that over anything SE affiliated

Unfortunately, it also fragments the community, well chat, at least. I suppose main challenges still live on SE for now.
Is there a Discord copy level above "BEYOND GODLIKE!!!!"?

@DJMcMayhem there's an anti-SE sentiment floating around?

jesus
maybe I should re-join the PPCG discord

Q: Next Shared Totient

frankThe totient function \$\phi(n)\$, also called Euler's totient function, is defined as the number of positive integers <=n that are relatively prime to (i.e., do not contain any factor in common with) n, where 1 is counted as being relatively prime to all numbers. (from WolframMathworld) Challeng...

@A̲̲ This CMC doesn't appear to have been answered yet. Should previous CMCs already be answered or become answered first, that would make this the first unanswered CMC. However, it would then become impossible to answer, as any answer would by definition be incorrect.

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

SopelSandbox note: I've seen a few similar challenges, particularly Shortest universal maze exit string, that's why I think this fits into this site, but I'm not sure. The tags could be 'code-challenge', 'grid', 'challenge', 'game'. Should I also provide a way to verify solutions with some standard in...
