Question: is there a term to describe the "root" class in an OO-inheritance hierachy? e.g. name for Java's "Object" class

not a superclass?

What's the golfiest way of getting everything but the first character of a python string?

@Riker this is why uprightleftgoat has no friends, he keeps showing off

@Downgoat I've heard "Adam class", but that's not the term usually used. I can't think of the normal name.

(I am python noob)

@Phoenix s[1:]

thanks

idea: "Root class"

sounds good to me
or base class

codegolf.stackexchange.com/questions/121921/make-a-interpreter has no interesting golfing tricks I can do ;-;
The obvious python solution seems to be the shortest

Q: Infinite Sequence of Unique Random Integers

MegoOutput an infinite sequence of positive integers, such that, for each element in the sequence, all positive integers that have not yet been output have a positive probability of being chosen, and no value is repeated. For example, if the first integer is 3, then 3 may not be output again, but al...

@Downgoat None of the above

@Mego alternative suggesiton?

Anonymous
9:11 PM
@Downgoat Object

D:

^^
Object is good
nooooo
bad
It's Object in Java And C#, why do you need to be unique for no reason?

because VSL is not Java

@Phoenix for the answer?
it's not shortest
I can think of one nice way to golf right now :p

if java creator said "why be unique for no reason" you'd be using MyClass extends VoidPtr

9:15 PM
Well think of something actually good then.

okay, fine, I'll do objectgoat

;=;
IDK what that emoticon is but I think it's appropriate

@roomOwners: can you move my pings to ascii-only to VSL room?

2 messages moved to VSL

@Downgoat Only because you're my favorite goat

9:18 PM
:D

Beat me to it...

lol
@Mego is he also the only goat who know who can type complete english sentences?

@Riker s/complete english//

but can other goats type goat sentences?

Anonymous
@Riker From my experience he can't manage that a lot of the time :P

9:29 PM
@Downgoat Foundation class.

Anonymous
@Adám That sounds like the next crappy Microsoft framework

@Mego :| it is the name of Apple's crappy framework

are there any 2d languages that don't have a memory separate from the codespace?

Ah yes, Microsoft Foundation Class Pro 2017.

i.e. the only way to store data is in the code?

9:32 PM
@Downgoat Root class is good.

Anonymous
@Downgoat Oh that's why

Question: did Wat/Mendeleev get chat banned or something? I haven't seen him around recently

Anonymous
@Adám No, it would be Microsoft Foundation Class Pro 9, with no versions 1-8.

Quesiton: does explanation for how type deductor work make sense: github.com/vsl-lang/VSL/blob/master/src/vsl/resolver/README.md

@Mego That's the consumer version. I'd settle for nothing less than Microsoft Foundation Class Pro Server 2017.

9:38 PM
@Downgoat Suspended for a week, I think it's been more than a week tho.

oh, he must of done a zyabin then

@Mendeleev is still pingable, having talked 16 days ago.
I thought it didn't let you do that after two weeks

he might have been in here in the last 2 wks tho
even if he didn't talk

@WheatWizard have you released the challenges for your restricted source challenge yet? If not, that's perfectly fine with me because I haven't yet updated Del|m|t

No I kind of forgot about the challenge since no one answered it

9:42 PM
RIP
it's a cool challenge, just really hard
@Mego ouch lol
not as bad as geobits's dog

What challenge?

@Riker brb blaming all hoof on doggo

Q: Unrestricted Languages

Wheat WizardOne of my favorite types of challenges on this site are restricted-source challenges. These challenges impose a computer tractable restriction that the sources of potential answers must pass. I like these challenges so much I have been working on a golfing language designed to win at these chal...

9:59 PM
congrats to es.stackoverflow.com for graduating
rip us

did SEs designers quit or something no site has gotten a design in over a year

SO got a new fancy design

Maybe they are working on them all in parallel, with newly graduating sites being added to the pot at a rate which prevents any of the designs ever reaching completion

fancy new design = new top bar

it's had it for a while

10:02 PM
@trichoplax Like Zeno's paradox.

@Phoenix which one they are 9

I don't remember which one, but it sounds like one of them.

is it the (1/2)^n one

probably

@Phoenix Exactly, except with a sufficient rate of newly graduating sites this one really would last forever...

Anonymous
10:11 PM
@Downgoat Fancy new design = it looks horrible

^
I don't get why they would make it intentionally different from other SE sites
everything is in a different place

^^, but I like the new SO design.
I wish everyone had it

Anonymous
@MistahFiggins They want the other sites to have it, too

@Phoenix this woudl break so many userscript though

@Mego that I'm ok with

Anonymous
10:13 PM
I haven't used SO at all since the new design rolled out

Is that really because of the design.

Anonymous
@Phoenix It's a big part, yes

It's just annoying that SO and the rest of SE are different

Anonymous
I don't know why SE is trying to be more like Microsoft. That's never a good idea.

Anonymous
Don't fix what ain't broken.

@Mego Microsoft makes good things
Like C#

@Riker Could you please tone down the frequency of your image posts? It's getting to the point where they're making up a large portion of your chat contributions.

@Mego I don't think Riker's image posts are too frequent at all but I'm not RO so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@Downgoat One month of ban
@Phoenix Nope one month
Also downgoat you are my fave goat :D

@Christopher :D

10:29 PM
@Downgoat i woulda been DownChristopher but people had to rain on my parade
@DJMcMayhem how is 1 with a newline a valid quine in golfscript?

It is not

67
A: Golf you a quine for great good!

Chris Jester-YoungGolfScript, 2 bytes 1 (note trailing newline) This pushes the number 1 onto the stack. At the end of the program, GolfScript prints out all items in the stack (with no spaces in between), then prints a newline. This is a true quine (as listed in the question), because it actually executes th...

I don't know. Why are you asking me? xP

@Christopher it's been there forever and the quine def is hazy af right now

@DJMcMayhem <sarcasm> You sounded smart. I guess I was wrong ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ </sarcasm>
@Riker ok

10:38 PM
@Christopher ouch

Q: Should we repost a challenge because of a changed consensus?

Erik the OutgolferGolf you a quine for great good! is a great example, since it was posted before the quine consensus was made. That means it's cluttered with answers not following it. Should we repost challenges containing a lot of answers affected by a consensus change?

DJ is very smart :p

"Yes" seems to be winning but we should give it a few days

@Riker It was too easy. I was set up

10:39 PM
doesn't really matter >_>

@Downgoat that hackmd is outdated af though

:P close enough

@Riker Added my sarcasm tags
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ @Downgoat the shrug dude is broke
Wait what. _

Why did you ping the goat

@Christopher o_O well that was uncalled for

10:52 PM
@DJMcMayhem Sorry. I was being sarcastic :P

Not really

I would remove it but I can't
@Phoenix I found a bug. But it is odd
_ chat bug is shown
If you do backslash and an underscore the backslash goes invisible

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

Sami AltamimiIntroduction Today I met a man in my local park. He's a very interesting man, however, I was pretty sure he was homeless. No phone, but he had a watch. I asked for the time and he said, "It's 1:43 P.M., facing Southwest. Today is May 21, 2017. And Daylight Savings Time ends on November 5th." I d...

Oh wait I see
That's because the backslash is escaping the Underscore, which is a special character

11:06 PM
\_
This is also what's responsible for a lot of shrug emoticons missing their arms.

Just use the chat commands tacoscript
/shrug

Hey I recently discovered this sandboxed question and I would like to fix it up. Any thoughts?

11:30 PM
So you first have a true quine, then you output the last program, and so on? I feel like it will just be various literals, getting larger and larger.

looks decent

@ATaco What do you mean? could you give an example?

I can see there being a problem - you can just check if there is input - if there is, just do a normal quine

if input==foo: quine

11:31 PM
hm
I should probably add an incentive to golf

Also, what should it do if the input ISN'T the last program?

maybe that will prevent that.
@ATaco I think I'll go with undefined behavior.
just not a quine

Then why don't I just submit a- Yeah...

@LeakyNun just realized you might want to see this for a Charcoal tutorial, working on an interactive one though

11:47 PM
With all respect, wheat, this just becomes an expansion of the generic quine challenge, but with an if in there.

Yeah I see why I abandoned it

There's a proposal to rename VSL to something less bad, any ideas? Currently only real idea is Clarity.

JavaCode /s
