I thought more people than that used Actually

hi!

Anonymous
Hey chatters, could you lend me your ears eyes for a moment? I need to test out a few Ishihara plates, and since I'm colorblind, I'm not the best test subject.

sure

9:04 AM

Anonymous
What do you see on that plate?

a weird M

@Mego is it meant to be a number?
@Mego an M

9:05 AM
an m

Anonymous
It's an M, but supposedly only colorblind people are supposed to be able to see it. I'm not confident that part of the generator works.

@Mego It's definitely a bit darker than the rest of it

Anonymous
Also, telling me if you're colorblind (and if so, what kind) would be useful :P

@Mego As far as I'm aware I'm not colourblind ;)

Anonymous

9:07 AM
I'm not colourblind probably.

@Mego It could also be a rotated 11

Anonymous
It's definitely an M. It looks weird because I drew it with a mouse :P

@Mego Apparently I'm not colourblind. Yay

also not colourblind

also not colorblind

9:10 AM
I want to see what happens if I pick nothing for each one

"Normal Color Vision" phew

Anonymous
Cool. I just got a different result from that test than what I normally do. It told me moderate protan, when I normally get diagnosed as moderate deuteran.

so it isn't reliable?
also it gets mad if you answer the first two no o.o

Anonymous
What about this plate?

Anonymous

9:11 AM
P

@Mego P

P

Well, I don't think a colour test by some company that sells correction lenses is really the way to go. But then again, I have no idea what a "proper" colour blindness test is supposed to be like.
@Mego There's P on your plate.
(sorry)

Anonymous
@DestructibleWatermelon It is reliable, but the Ishihara test sometimes struggles to distinguish protans from deuterans, because the symptoms are similar.

Anonymous
@mınxomaτ It's actually a really good Ishihara test - better than the original, for sure.

9:12 AM
Also, I can definitely see a p on the plate

Am I the only one who doesn't understand what the question is?

So I just learned that my ISP is pissed at me now lol

I know that feeling.

@muddyfish Given separation and limit
find lower primes of the pair of primes separated by that separation

@muddyfish Pretty clear to me

9:15 AM
lower prime below the limit

Anonymous
It was confusing to me the first several times I read it

They're claiming I broke ^

It's just a bit weirdly stated

Anonymous

9:16 AM
@Mego Okay yeah I can see that lol

So it's asking for primes under n where i+k are also prime
H

Anonymous
That one I can barely see. If I hadn't drawn it myself, I don't know that I'd be able to distinguish it.

Last one for now:

@Mego It stands out to me like a firecracker in nighttime

definitely an N

Definitely not clear

(yes, N was correct for the last one)

9:20 AM
@Mego nothing!

mess of colors

@Mego Nothin

Anonymous
Correct, I didn't draw anything on that plate

@muddyfish Really? All of these are really clear to me. :(

Anonymous
Cool, so this generator works for all but the "colorblind-only" plates

Anonymous
9:25 AM
Thanks, people!

@Syxer The N is really kind of faded and it's not very distinct compared to the rest of it

9:41 AM
@muddyfish I'd say the N is a lot clearer than the M and P are.

@Emigna Really? I thought the P was really clear

@muddyfish That's the least clear to me. In terms of clearness: H->N->M->P
Interesting that we view this differently.

H->P->N-M

What's the current opinion on people building small variants of languages and use either depending on the challenge?
Another example would be Jelly and M
More importantly, what's the opinion on people switching the language they use in an answer that they already posted and that got upvoted?

Similar to all the BF derivatives maybe? Usually there's no point in having more than 1 similar language answer a challenge. Other than that I'm not sure. Making several similar languages could get out of hand.
Hmm, in general I'd say switching language is bad.

If the languages are really different, then it warrants another answer, and if they are almost the same, then it feels almost like cheating "let's just make two versions of my languages with different builtins and I'll use the one that fits the challenge"
@Emigna That's what you did though…

@Fatalize I wouldn't switch language in an answer you've already posted

@muddyfish It has been done in the answer I posted, which is why I asked

In this case it felt OK to me to switch as the code is basically the same. Would be pretty unnecessary to post in both. Maybe that was wrong. Didn't think that long.

10:06 AM
Although you could argue if 05A1BE and 2sable are really different languages, but then that's my other point that it's kind of like circumventing the limited number of built-ins a language has by creating slight variations of one

It would be bad if that became the norm for esolangs.

I can think of 05A1BE/2sable and Jelly/M that fit this description

Yes. Maybe seriously/actually as well?

Actually is Seriously 2.0, unless I'm mistaken
The github repo is named Seriously but presents Actually
So in that case it's really the same language, it's just been renamed

Ah ok, but they have an interpreter each on TIO for example.

i mean, obv he shouldn't do it again, but like, it seems somehow not extremely out of character to me

@MitchSchwartz I haven't seen the deleted messages but of what I have seen it seems that he got off to a bad start with a lot of people and so they react harder to him saying things than if someone they'd liked and had known longer would have said the same.

trichoplaxCurrently our main chatroom, The Nineteenth Byte, has only the 4 PPCG moderators as room owners. didnt give errors for me

I know, it only happens on one of my computers, I think I have a config error
@muddyfish it was a problem with a proxy, changing to http fixed it (even though I was getting MITM'd)

@LeakyNun I haven't the faintest idea where to start on that one :D

@MitchSchwartz It's worse because it kept pinging everybody for no reason whatsoever

@LeakyNun Yeah, but inside M over a range, the only element in the stack is the integer I'm using at the moment (there was something in the notes about a temporary stack)

@BusinessCat ok so like 0.00001% worse

12:43 PM
@MitchSchwartz No, really everybody - they asked me what my favourite type of cheese was when I was afk

I'm not sure if there is a single (undeleted) "you-should-hate-this" message. That's the problem with deletion. After the fact, it looks harsh, because you don't have the context. There are a whole lot of deleted messages, though.

I think the problem is that this room is branded as being for "General discussion for codegolf". I think that some people assume this means it's a general chat for codegolf users while others are under the impression that it's general golfing-related discussion. A few of the problems I've seen recently could potentially be solved by having a dedicated space for general discussion.
Obviously there are still cases of people spamming but what is considered to be spam will be different based on the enforced topic of the room.

TIL there is a language named GitHub

@muddyfish i saw that, and i don't change my assessment. a chat full of garbage vs a chat full of garbage with pings aren't really that different to me. i don't take this ping thing very seriously. for example Lembik's ping usage seemed strange to me but didn't bother me

@MitchSchwartz spam
that seem useful?

12:50 PM
and a "hi" train is not spam?

especially as a notification in your inbox?

you have not changed my feelings

I won't try any further then

To be fair, when I asked Lembik to stop pinging me on every message, he did. He didn't just keep on going with it.

@Sherlock9 Just look at other languages' approaches

12:59 PM
i don't think it's at all central to the point, but the afk part seems misleading, as the bot was clearly responding to very recent posts, and the cheese question was right after this one chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/31885757#31885757 (i don't think it changes anything regarding pings tho)

@Downgoat @Adnan Please do not vote to delete spam. If the Community user deletes it because of spam flags, the post is automatically edited and locked. That does not happen if you manage to delete it by conventional means.

@Adnan so lock it manually?

@Downgoat some different options for string modification. Realise that they are "effectivelly immutable" so whenever you modify them you use expensive operations to throw away the string, but it can always be done like this.
String a = "foo"
String a+="bar"
System.out.println(a);//prints foobar\n
System.out.println(a.substring(0,4));//prints out foob zero indexed

@RohanJhunjhunwala :O JS has substring too!
