Also can whoever owns @ಠ_ಠ please bring it back into the chatroom, even if it's just briefly? Having to look up the face and C/P it every time I need it is annoying. :P

@Geobits I Actually notice all of them. I just Usually choose not to acknowledge them. :P

Oh, is Usually a thing now? I can never keep up...

@Mego *gasp* New programming language in the works?!

@El'endiaStarman Maybe

@Mego Is "usually" your next language?

@DJMcMayhem Possibly

I Actually did have an idea for a language, but I hadn't decided upon the name for it until just now.

Oh BTW well we're on the topic, did you ever make that queue based language?

Anonymous
3:02 AM
@DJMcMayhem Oh right that thing

Anonymous
I totally forgot about that idea

Anonymous
British and Usually will be my next two languages

Anonymous
British is a queue-based language, inspired by British habits whilst queueing

Anonymous
Usually will be a language where nothing works like you'd expect. I'm going to fork Javascript and PHP, merge them, and hope for the worst.
2

Maybe one named Brexit, where the outcome is the opposite of what anyone looking at it would expect.

3:04 AM
@Mego y u mix such goodness with such badness ;_;

@Geobits Making it queue-based would probably achieve that fairly often.

@Downgoat Dunno. Pure PHP would be better, and that's saying something.

Anonymous
@Downgoat What goodness? I'm not going to write it in Python. Only K&R C, for extra badness.

Why not use that terrible C-in-Java-in-C thing that was posted in here some days ago?

Anonymous
Wait no. I can do worse. I'll collaborate with phase.

Aww, the old java interpreter branch doesn't seem golfed at all :/

:D even NASA uses node: github.com/nasa/openmct

Don't forget about rocketJS

@Geobits not too surprising since every noun suffixed by ".js" is a javascript library

Crap, Helka's here. Start removing all those earlier messages about him.

Anyone want me to transfer repo ownership of github.com/HelkaHomba/ThePeoplesPython to them?

3:16 AM
Ooh, ooh, I do!

Hey guys, what would be your reaction if you were reading a novel and three (or more) characters had a dialogue, and the speakers were distinguished by changing the font color of their words?

I'm unlikely to ever complete it but I don't just want to delete it.

@El'endiaStarman Personally, I'd probably hate it. I'd give it a shot for a couple chapters though.

@DJMcMayhem Ok. Going once...

@El'endiaStarman depends on how serious the book is. If it's more serious, I think it would be obnoxious

3:17 AM
Twice...

@Geobits Yeah, I'm not totally sure if I would like it, and there might be technical difficulties with getting it published since everyone assumes black and white.

What medium is this novel on? Paper, kindle, something else?

Sold!
@DJMcMayhem What's your github name?

Anonymous
@El'endiaStarman Instant dislike. I'm colorblind.

@El'endiaStarman I'm sure they'd print it in color if you paid them to. It wouldn't be as cheap as regular pulp paper/print, though.

3:19 AM
@El'endiaStarman At least for paper books, that's probably going to be a bit more expensive.

@El'endiaStarman maybe do font styling instead of color? I read a book where the font went down over time as the writing became more and more "learned"

@Mego Well, yeah, that'd be a big nail in the coffin...

writer*

@El'endiaStarman Doesn't work for audiobooks either

3:19 AM
@HelkaHomba Oooh, that too. Drat.

Anonymous

To be fair, nothing works very well for audiobooks. They're terrible.

@DJMcMayhem It work?

@HelkaHomba Wait, actually, isn't it normal to have different voices for different speakers?

I love audiobooks!

3:20 AM
^

@HelkaHomba idk, I'm on mobile

The motivation for this idea was to avoid having to identify the speaker with every single line of dialogue. When there are only two speakers, these identifiers can be dropped, which is convenient and reads better.

@El'endiaStarman Sometimes but they can be tricky to tell apart. e.g audio plays can get confusing
@El'endiaStarman Write a play

Anonymous
@HelkaHomba Damn ninjas

Anonymous
@El'endiaStarman The typical way writers get around that is to have the characters have very distinctive speaking styles.

3:23 AM
It's not so bad if you get creative with the identifiers either. You obviously don't want to say "said Brian" after every line, but the accompanying lines can provide more detail, or insight into the character. If it's really dialog-heavy, that might not work as well.

Anonymous
If it's really dialog-heavy, you've written a play, so write it as a play.

Include an avatar of the speaking character, left to the dialogue.

^

Anonymous
@Dennis I see what you did there

Perfect for today's readers, tbh.

Anonymous
3:24 AM
Also to make replies easier, have a little arrow that points to the part of the dialog that the speaker is replying to.

@Dennis That would be interesting to experiment with in print...

@Mego total color blindness or a specific color?

Or do the Dracula thing and write it as a series of correspondences. Automatic identification of speaker and addressee.

@Dennis -1 books arent social network :P

3:25 AM
@Downgoat Deuteranopia, IIRC. And if I spelled that correctly. :P

Anonymous
And add a little identifier at the beginning of the text to specify who the speaker is addressing. Something like @name would work.

Anonymous
@El'endiaStarman Correct on both accounts.

these feels like a potential SE question somewhere

writers.se?
or is it writing.se?

Q: I'm getting tired of "he said" "she said" in dialogue; how do I get around it?

RolandiXorI get tired of "he said", "she said", "they replied". Is there a better, but still reasonable way, to indicate dialogue?

3:26 AM
@Mego :( does that means you have trouble telling different between upgoat & downgoat?

@Downgoat Touché.

@Downgoat lol

Ooh, challenge idea. Given a set of Ishihara test plates and a colorblindness mode, create a program that simulates that form of colorblindness (outputting the correct number from the plates that it should pass, and "None" for the plates it should fail).

Yeah. Kind of like the crossword clue: "Four-letter word meaning 'intercourse', ends in K... oh, TALK!" — kindall Jun 22 '11 at 6:07
@Mego Are those the numbers-in-dots plates?

Anonymous
@Geobits Yep

3:28 AM
I'm gonna work on writing up a Sandbox post for this challenge

@Downgoat I'm considering support for image output though, so if you really, really want to, you'd be able to display red belly-up goats on TIO.

I hate those things. I always come away thinking I failed, even knowing that I've never actually gotten one wrong.

@Dennis :D :D :D :D :D this will be best TIO feature since TIO

Anonymous
An interesting twist on - pass only a certain subset of the tests, depending on the input.

@Mego I remember these from when I was very young, and I absolutely couldn't understand what their purpose was.

Anonymous
3:30 AM
@Dennis If you're colorblind, you can't distinguish the numbers from the background on certain plates. For me, the red and purple plates kill me.

Worse are the depth perception tests. I fail those hard.

TFW people flag your chat post because it has a sample Nigerian Prince email, however, they wouldn't even bother to flag the real email to their email provider (that is, assuming it didn't go to the junk folder automatically)

And then you're banned for around 25 minutes, that somehow feels like forever.

@Mego I do understand it now, just not back then.

Anonymous
Oh I totally misread that

Anonymous
Just like those plates!

3:31 AM
@ColdGolf whether they flag in chat has nothing to do with whether they flagged (or even received) the email

OK, that genuinely made me LOL.

Anonymous
:D

@DJMcMayhem My point is that, if they flag my funny chat post, why don't they flag the real deal too, to their own email providers?

@ColdGolf my point is that you don't know they didn't

Anonymous
@DJMcMayhem Don't feed the trolls

3:32 AM

@Mego The flagging trolls.
I wish there's a feature to know who flagged you.

@Mego I imagine nobody in the US would be dumb enough to do what our capital city did and reinvent the traffic light (now "intelligent" and horizontal).

3:33 AM
@Geobits oh, is it incremental? I didn't know that.

Anonymous
@Dennis Define "intelligent"?

@Dennis We have lots of horizontal lights here.

Anonymous
@Geobits Same, though they're mostly at intersections where there is a 5-light traffic light (which doesn't work so well if it's vertical).

That gave me an idea....

True. I don't see many 3-lights that way. Some though.

Anonymous
3:35 AM
I only see 3-lights that are horizontal on poles with a 5-light.

@Mego That's how they call it. I don't see it. For example, at crossings that allow you to turn left only part of the time, you used to get a red arrow (top) and a green arrow (bottom). Now you get a green arrow if you can turn, no arrow at all if not. Not at all confusing.

@HelkaHomba What is this madness?
How can such writing be exposed to the outer world?

Oh yeah. I don't see red arrows all that often.

Anonymous
@Dennis In the US (at least, in Texas), lanes that can either turn left or go forward have green, yellow, and red lights, plus green and yellow left arrows.

3:37 AM
@ColdGolf The mods have their own room called The Twentieth Byte. I imagine that's not far off

@HelkaHomba Your imagination is quite amusing. Not realistic, mind you, but amusing. The world of modern technology does this to you.

Oh, and the yellow light flashes now when going from green to red. Also not at all confusing.

Anonymous
TIL there's even a specific term for our style of lights: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/…

@Mego Why can't Dallas just be normal?

That's the common one here, too.

3:39 AM
Dallas, please.

Hopefully it doesn't strobe bright-ass white during red lights. They have quite a few of those in Alabama.

@Geobits Alabama.
Alabama?

TIL they were banned in 1990 and Alabama is just dumb and slow.

@Geobits Wow, rude.

3:42 AM
@Mego Well, that wasn't the TIL part.

@Mego Idk, I used to be able to look at a traffic light and and instantly know what was going on. They took that from me... The best one was the sponsored light in front of our campus, which had hands (palm for stop, thumbs up for green) and ads on a kind of TV.

> ... although by Chinese traffic laws, people who are color blind are not permitted to drive ...

@HelkaHomba I've had too many flags for posting memes. Turns out, in the world of the internet, you guys are disconnected. Badly.

We choose to be.

You don't.

Forced memes are not funny.

@AndrewT. Memes that the other side doesn't even know in the first place, forced or not.
That isn't funny nor is it unfunny unless they even know what it means.

If they don't, then it's not my fault that around 300 million other people do.

Guys, is it okay to add bonus questions to a challenge days later after most answers have been posted?

4:11 AM
No.

Okay.
But it's a bonus question, though.
That's why I thought maybe it's fine.

Challenges should have a single, objective winning criterion. Bonuses are discouraged, even if posted in the initial revision.

I'd say it's ok as long as the scoring doesn't change at all (i.e. a pure bonus just for fun) but don't expect many to do it since it will be too late for them to see

Calka's had "write an interpreter for language X" and "just for fun, write a program in language X" which is fine, but yeah just don't expect people to necessarily do it

@El'endiaStarman it would probably be more expensive meaning fewer people read it, and generally you shouldn't need it that much unless your speakers cannot be told alart easily by their grammar, the way they refer to others, formality of language, sentence length, vocabulary etc. if everyone has a distinctive style of speaking the readers should be easily able to tell who is speaking

To the mod that declined my mod flag about the constant chat noise coming from one user: could you please set a definitive policy on what to do when the chatiquette is being violated? Chat flags are apparently not appropriate, but mod flags are also appropriate? How are users supposed to get moderator attention when a user or group of users is blatantly violating the etiquette that has been set for this room?

@Sp3000 That portmanteau makes me sound like construction equipment >_>

Anonymous
@Mego s/also appropriate/also inappropriate

@Mego This isn't easy. Moderator-only flags are visible to all SE moderators, and most of them won't be familiar with our chatiquette.

That seems like a major oversight

Anonymous
@Dennis SE moderators should look at the chatiquette in the room description and see that it is being violated.

4:22 AM
@HelkaHomba Would you prefer Hombies?

Calvomba?

Anonymous
Having the chatiquette doesn't solve anything if we can't point to it and say "this user isn't following our (reasonable) rules, please do something about it".

@Geobits er..

Calvin's Helbies?

4:24 AM
@DJMcMayhem Their stand is that the same rules govern all of SE chat, and that infractions should be dealt with as soon as possible.

Anonymous
@Dennis True, but some rooms have stricter rules than others, and there needs to be a way to flag violations of those stricter rules.

@Mego As a last resort, there's always flags on the main site. For ongoing violation of the rules (rather a single outburst), action would have to be taken on the main site anyway.

Anonymous
@Dennis That's no more of a solution than a moderator flag in chat. In fact, it's worse, because the main-site moderator flag will be attached to something completely irrelevant to the problem.

@Mego Don't you need to ceil after dividing by 4 rather than floor?

Anonymous
@Sp3000 Oh carp.

4:26 AM
@DJMcMayhem Frankly, call me whatever you want. I just might not respond ;P

@Sp3000 Wait no, flooring takes care of the extra 1 that you don't get by saving the Pokemon for evolution instead of transferring it.

Oh you skipped the subtraction, right
Should have read the spec better sorry

@Mego Well, it is what it is. There's also no way to flag a user's profile (which has been an issue more than once), other than raising a flag on an unrelated post. If the user doesn't have any posts...
I agree with you. There's just nothing I can do about it.

Did I miss a Pokemon challenge somewhere?

@Dennis Are you referring to this? Because that implies that flagging for moderator attention is the correct option.

@Geobits which will be 300% less golfy than the java solution

I know. It would be the perfect blasphemy.

@Mego I swear there was something somewhere about how flag should be visible to all moderators, but I can't find it right now. Not sure if bad at searching or misremembering...
Chat is absolutely moderated. There may be problems with how it's moderated - heck, that's undeniable, there are frequently problems with how it's moderated. But a good bit of this... Hell, I'd wager most of this... Comes down to a lack of experience coupled with missing or misleading guidance. For example: moderators can easily suspend users for years in chat if the situation warrants; they usually don't, but perhaps they should? For a habitual, blatant troll, a few weeks to a few months is surely easier than dealing with crap every few days... So, let's set up some guidelines. — Shog9 ♦ Dec 10 '15 at 3:56

I can't imagine how to start doing that, tbh.

Why did somebody flag me 20 minutes or so after I posted something funny? Is there a way to ban flagging on here? @Dennis seriously dude they gotta stop spamming flags on me!!

@ASCII-only Golfing all the non-java crap that goes into an android app.

i think it's removing whitespace mostly

4:46 AM
@ColdGolf generally repeated flagging is a signal that you're doing it wrong and people want you to stop

Probably, but I bet there are some weird tricks you could pull off. Not in the manifest for sure, but somewhere.

@Geobits Tips for golfing in Android: use dp, not dip

Hahaha. Better tip: Skip as much xml as possible.

@DJMcMayhem Or just people spamming the flag button, perhaps?

@Downgoat So is the one in Washington. The one that blew last around 1700 in one of the biggest earthquakes ever and made a tsunami that hit Japan.

4:51 AM
I wonder what the safest place is to live in the US. No earthquakes, volcanoes, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, droughts, landslides, sinkholes, blizzards, hailstorms, wildfires...
Oh, and no crime, pollution, unkempt roads

@HelkaHomba Colorado only has 2 of those

I'm not sure you're describing anywhere at all, much less in the US.

CMC: Find a likely place that has none of these ^^^^

Earthquacks, landslides, blizzards, wildfires, and probably hailstorms.
Oh, and floods.
@DJMcMayhem See the above list ^

@Hosch250 no earthquakes, no landslides. Fair point about the blizzards though
But I meant floods and wildfires

4:55 AM
@DJMcMayhem They are in the Rockies. Landslides aren't uncommon in the Rockies.

@HelkaHomba Easy, after you answer this first: burnt alive, buried alive or drowning?

Drowning

@Hosch250 eh, I suppose.

They don't have very bad earthquakes, true, but there is a fault there and there are minor ones.
And I know there are avalanches in Colorado, which are just as deadly as landslides.

4:56 AM
I lived 20 or so miles from Syracuse for a year. They had a pretty bad blizzard that year.

Personally, though, I'm not worried about any of these. I actually want to see a tornado, avalanche, and blizzard one day.
Oh, and a volcano. Used to want to be a volcanologist.

Oh, I suppose there are tornados too.
Man, I'm not selling this well, am I?

Maybe. I don't know if there are very many of them in Colorado because of the mountain system. I've heard they are more common in wide-open places.

@HelkaHomba Also the place needs to be safe if all polar ice melts and sea level rises

@Hosch250 I used to live 30-35 miles from Denver, and there were quite a few tornadoes there

5:00 AM
OK, I stand corrected.
@DJMcMayhem Talking about landslides: gazette.com/…

Not nearly as bad as Kansas though

BTW, what's the IT/programming outlook there? I'm considering moving to Colorado after I graduate.
