Q: Domain Name Appraisal

PhiNotPiDomain name trading is big business. One of the most useful tools for domain name trading is an automatic appraisal tool, so that you can easily estimate how much a given domain is worth. Unfortunately, many automatic appraisal services require a membership/subscription to use. In this challen...

Aww... That's one of my favorite jokes.

@uoɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC It wasn't agreeing, it was saying ? again.

12:06 AM
oh

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan basically insulting drummers? o_O

MODERN LANGUAGE: Really confusing!

no
only confusing when it's confusing
sorry, couldn't resist

It turns out there's already a 1 megasoup census for the rule, but I guess I can still add to that

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Pretty much. I used to make that joke all the time, but then I actually was the drummer for a band, so they kept making the joke at me. :(

12:07 AM
Not a hard soup count to double, especially considering it's running pretty quickly

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan rofl

Really, I'm averaging just over 1200 soups/second

Here's another one. This kid wants to learn bass, so he asks his dad to get him lessons, and the dad does. First week of lessons, the dad asks him what he learned. The kid says "I learned how to play on the E string!" Second week, he asks again, and the kid says "I learned how to play on the A string!" Third week, he asks again, and the kid says "Oh, I'm done with lessons. Now we're doing gigs!"

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan awkward silence
also, ?

There are four known still lifes from the previous census, I've hit three of them so far
Goodbye for now, I guess

12:14 AM
still an awkward silence ...
what's this github ppcg user? it's linked to, but it's unofficial...?

My university's "technology service" just sent an email warning about a phishing attack... by forwarding everyone the phishing attack email along with the explanation to avoid them.

still better than the us army that forgot to escape quotes

@uoɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC Yeah, it's just a group to host the new chatiqutte. It's intentionally unofficial since chatiqutte is "guidelines" not "rules".

why aren't the mods contributord
*s

@uoɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC 3/4 of them are github.com/ppcg/ppcg.github.io/graphs/contributors (btw you can edit chat messages)

@LeakyNun I'm not sure if your answer to my challenge is correct.
Score-wise, at least.

@PhiNotPi what did you calculate?

I'm getting 2.55473778393232 but I'm not sure which number, if either, is correct.

@PhiNotPi You left a site named "naughtylesbian" on the test data.

@PhiNotPi You used base e and I used base 2
both are correct
see this

1:05 AM
Okay let's use base e for this challenge, since that's what I have in the question.

changed

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan okay, removed
This is actually really poor performance. Simply guessing 20 gets a better score of 1.762. — PhiNotPi 22 secs ago
@LeakyNun ^

1:42 AM
@LeakyNun yeah
@DrGreenEggsandIronMan glad that was nuked... >_>

2:16 AM
Regarding my domain appraisal challenge, I think a decent strategy would be categorize domains based on length (3, 4, 5, 6+), character type (all letters, all digits, mixed), and by number of words (0, 1, 2, 3+).
You would end up with 36 categories with the above scheme, and there's probably enough data available to find an appropriate guess for each category.
Something that would be cool to do, after the challenge is over, is to combine all of the entrants and see if the result is an improvement.

2:55 AM
I need help. I need to convert an array of arrays like [[3], [4, 5], [6, 7, 8]] to [3, [[4, [6, 7]], [5, [7, 8]]]]

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ in which language?

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ What's the logic here?

it's a tree-like array

@PhiNotPi I'm a bit confused by your challenge. Is there anything that prevents me from hardcoding the actual prices and get a perfect score?

I need an algorithm :p

2:57 AM
@Dennis the training set is not the test set

Ah, just found the part I missed. Got it.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ this should be the first step

I am fluent in pyth, but could you tell me what's going on ? :P
and how it helps

it converts to nested array
[[3], [[4, 5], [[6, 7, 8], [7, 8, 9, 10]]]]

well, that's great, but I was being sarcastic about being fluent in pyth. even after looking at the definitions its doesn't help much.
kinda

3:07 AM
click debug and then look at the pseudocode

waiiiiit debug on helps
yeah, thanks :D

it's a simple reduce

I think I can modify it to do what I need
maybe

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ this?

looks right, asides from a few extra padding, which is probably my fault of not explaining correctly
What does Pchr do?

3:17 AM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ transpose
the chr is the python chr function, but it is overloaded

like J's |:?

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ yes

3:45 AM
@LeakyNun you can golf ,btb to tBb
and take out the Q at the end

@Maltysen it isn't a code-golf
but thanks

lel

@Maltysen the creator of pyth is now unpingable

@LeakyNun not in the pyth room

4:31 AM
@Maltysen are you still here?
or anyone else
is this clear enough?

@LeakyNun i get it, don't understand the rationale

@Maltysen the rationale of its existence?
well it's convenient?

in any case, there's little point in doing the first part implicit and the second part explicit
just have two lambdas

@Maltysen it's hard to invert a lambda

@LeakyNun but since when did we have inverse operations defined for all the operators? the best way i know to do an inverse is .I which works as well on lambdas as it does on operators
gtg, talk with you on this in a bit

4:38 AM
@Maltysen so just throw an error if the operator cannot be inverted

5:06 AM
@LeakyNun sure, but it gets slower

@aditsu how does it know pi?

it doesn't, it just calculates tan

:o

wait, if you mean large as in larger than 64 bits, it probably doesn't work
as it doesn't have enough floating point precision

I see

5:12 AM
actually 52 bits I guess

I commented though, so that may help.

maths.se

What are you, British? :P

kinda
but yes, its always plural

@Quill I usually don't mind the Feedbot joke edits, but could you please only do it when the question has been posted by someone previously (and recently, preferably) in chat? Having to go into the history to find out what got posted is not user-friendly at all and defeats the purpose of the feeds.

5:33 AM
It was an off-topic question, which is what they usually are

What if you waited until it actually got closed? That would help increase it's visibility to get it closed faster.

Which isn't closed yet. The point (or one point) of the feed is to get people's eyes on it so they have the opportunity to close >_>

Although, it's not a huge deal to me.

By the time it gets enough eyes to close it, it'll already have disappeared into the transcript

Well, it's right now sitting at 2 CVs.

5:35 AM
No, it disappeared from the transcript before it got eyes on it. That's my point.

@Quill Do you have close-vote powers on PPCG?

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan I don't, only flag privs

My rules of thumb for when to edit a feed bot post: the question/answer had recently (within one page of messages) been posted by another user, or the post has been deleted, or it's blatantly off-topic/spam/etc and has already been closed.

5:51 AM

@LegionMammal978 So have I (for other rules), but rules like this, which produce a lot of distinct objects, as a result, produce significantly larger haul files for the same number of soups.
80000 soup hauls seem to be working so far though
So it's not one of those rules that apgsearch really can't handle at all
Also, the census now includes its first 19-bit still life
