Q: Code Golf: Shortest way to crash an iOS App

Alex WulffSo I came across this question on SO, but none of the answers really focus on forcing crashes in the shortest amount of characters. So, my question is, what is the shortest way, using the least number of characters, to crash an iOS application? Either a Swift or Obj-C solution would be fine. The...

@flawr the phrase exaggerates how clueless someone is by saying that they are like a newborn baby in having no life experience

why you bork @SE

@Dennis Well, array += [1] is just shorthand for array = array + [1], and when you do array + [1], a new list is created, and this is then assigned to array. If array is not local, then this should fail because you're trying to assign to something out of scope. On the other hand, array.append(1) works in-place. It's like sorted(array) versus array.sort().

Q: New Aviation Site Design!

Bret CopelandGood news everyone, it was discussed on the Stack Exchange podcast, and we now have a site design. Lol, that's amazing.

Oh speaking of site design
I was away from this site for a few months
Can anyone tell me why we don't yet have our own site design?

2:30 AM
No, nobody can tell you that.
Because we're all wondering the same thing.

@busukxuan Because @SE hates us.

Joel talked about that on the podcast once

Alex said somewhere something like "4 years to graduation, probably 4 years to design", but I don't know where.
@Quill o_O He said he hates PPCG?

PPCG: 5 years from beta to graduation, 5 years from graduation to design. Let's make it happen.

@Phrancis Feel free! If you think it would be fun to solve go ahead!
Although you probably shouldn't post that as a answer.

@El'endiaStarman That's not true. Appending to an array, even with +=, does not create a new array. (I really should say list, since it's different for tuples.)

@Phrancis Actually, I'm not sure how I feel having it posted on an entirely different site before I've even officially posted it here.

@HelkaHomba Did you all get a design template?

No. That's my point

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan Yeah I just linked the Sandbox post in CR chat. But by all means, if you'd rather I remove it from there I can do that

I'd rather have the finished product linked to, but I guess it's not really a big deal.

Which cryptographically secure random number generator do you suggest for JavaScript?

it has an rng

For node, there's Int64.js

I use browser JavaScript.

@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 C++11 RNG specification
tl;dr: don't bother looking at the API
just look at the implementation

Okay.

@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 you shouldn't need 64 bit ints though
all 64 bit ints that I use in that implementation are basically 2x32 bit

7:33 AM
I decided that doing ChaCha in JavaScript is hard.

The United Nations officially condemned the practice of countries shutting down access to the internet. A resolution (PDF) entitled The promotion, protection and enjoyment of human rights on the Internet effectively extends human rights held offline to the internet. It was passed by consensus, but only after a determined effort by a number of countries, including China and Russia, to pull out key parts of the text.

@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 you might wanna try blum blum shub

@Maltysen "Blum? Blum Blum Blum?" Shub! XD

Blum Blum Shub (B.B.S.) is a pseudorandom number generator proposed in 1986 by Lenore Blum, Manuel Blum and Michael Shub that is derived from Michael O. Rabin's oblivious transfer mapping. Blum Blum Shub takes the form x n + 1 = x n 2 mod M {\displaystyle x_{n+1}=x_{n}^{2}{\bmod {M}}} , where M = pq is the product...

I meant, I was joking on the name "Blum Blum Shub." I know that it is an RNG algorithm.
In this implementation, p = 3559 and q = 3517.
Are these primes large enough (with product 12517003)?
(3559 - 3517) mod 4 = 2. ._.
Which primes fit?
In this implementation, p = 3559 and q = 3557.
Are these primes large enough (with product 12666481)?
(3559-3557) = 2. ._.

7:54 AM
@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 well that depends on the cycle length
notice that it is just modular exponentiaion
xn = x^(2n) mod M, so the cycle length is basically phi(M)
well, technically its the charmichael function as the article says, but close enough

In this implementation, p = 7883 and q = 7841.

oh cool, you can calculate lambda by lcm(p-1,q-1), makes sense

Doesn't fit. ._. (7883 - 7841) mod 4 = 2.

what do you mean doesn't fit?

> The two primes, p and q, should both be congruent to 3 (mod 4) (this guarantees that each quadratic residue has one square root which is also a quadratic residue)...
> For a given positive integer n {\displaystyle n} n, two integers a {\displaystyle a} a and b {\displaystyle b} b are called congruent modulo n {\displaystyle n} n, written

a ≡ b ( mod n ) {\displaystyle a\equiv b{\pmod {n}}} a \equiv b \pmod{n}

if a − b {\displaystyle a-b} a-b is divisible by n {\displaystyle n} n...

8:02 AM
@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 oh
why are you subtracting?

> ...if a − b {\displaystyle a-b} a-b...
In this implementation, p = 7907 and q = 7901.
Doesn't fit... ._. (7907 - 7901) mod 4 = 2.

wait where is this from?
i don't see this in the wiki article?

oh oh
i was asking about the sample primes you have
"In this implementation..."

Hah! (5651 - 5623) mod 4 = 0.
Is there Euler's totient function in Python?
preferably standard library

8:08 AM
@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 for primes, totient(p) = p-1
because all numbers less than it are coprime to it

>>> 5651 - 1 - 1
5649
>>> 5623 - 1 - 1
5621
>>> gcd(5649, 5621)
7
Is a so-called "cycle length coefficent" of 7 enough for a large cycle length?

idk?
maybe
probably

I forgot, is it true that two prime numbers are also coprime to each other?

@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 the definition of a prime number is one that is coprime to everything (except its multiples of course)

Alright.

8:56 AM
@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 you should probably take this chat less seriously

@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 How is that a scandal?

-._(._.)_.-

What's wrong with being invited to the Trash?

@Maltysen Cycle length testing my RNG on the seed 2, I got 3 prompts to stop the "not responding" script, the last of which I stopped the script. But I also got a result of 1647228+.
Therefore, the cycle length is definitely large.
And finally, refactor that into an object and factory of such objects.
Such that the functions in one object are independent of other objects and there can be multiple states of the generator.
Independent, too.
