Q: Shortest simple regex matching a binary word

LynnTask Define a simple regex as a non-empty regular expression consisting only of characters 0 and 1, grouping parentheses ( and ), one-or-more repetition quantifier +. Given a non-empty string of 0s and 1s, find the shortest simple regex matching the full input string. (If there are multiple ...

@AlexA. your comment on my blog got caught in the spamfilter, sorry.

@PhiNotPi Spamfilter?!? You've been getting spam :-(

Is said spamfilter operated manually? :P

@NewMainPosts That seems so familiar...

7:03 PM
Yes, I have, and no it's not manual.
Some of the spammers are failing at spamming, though.
Because they don't provide a link to their product, and just say to search google for it.

7:16 PM
i have a big long regex that i want to display so it looks pretty and pretends to be readable. what's the best approach to do that
is there some styleguide or something i can reference

Do you know about the /x modifier lots of regex engines support?
Ctrl-F perldoc.perl.org/perlre.html for “Here's an example”.
That sort of thing helps. If you’re presenting it on e.g. a slide, I would use whitespace, comments, and (tactical) colours/styles
There’s no style guide because regular expressions are really freaking ugly.

that's pretty much what i'm looking for. thanks

Q: The happy Ender problem

Luis MendoThe happy ending problem (actually a theorem) states that Any set of five points in the plane in general position has a subset of four points that form the vertices of a convex quadrilateral. The problem was so named by Paul Erdos when two mathematicians who first worked on the problem, Est...

(caution, GPU heavy)

@mınxomaτ "Verticle"?

Dunno, not my code.

@mınxomaτ What does it look like?

Can't make a screenshot (AMD driver issue). Open the frontpage, there should be a thumbnail.

7:44 PM

(it moves, too)

yeah, all kinds of fades and little fractals

8:03 PM
@himarmjr This pleases me.

@flawr Let's see if I can get TMUF up and running on this craptop. If so, I'm probably on Destyno in an hour or so.

TMUF?

It was you, right?
May 23 at 20:35, by flawr
@mınxomaτ @El'endiaStarman up for a game in TMUF?
>.>

finally, I got that clip :)

8:12 PM
@mınxomaτ Oh=)

given a set of percentages, S, is it possible to create a different percentage, X, by multiplying a subset (allowing for a finite number of repeats)?

Badges are going crazy o_O

is there a challenge of the above?

@NathanMerrill What do you mean by percentage?

decimal from (0, 1)

8:13 PM
and X is not in S?
What do you mean by multiplying a subset?

@flawr possibly

What is X different from then?

Well it's certainly not possible if X is greater than any in S >_>

lets say X is .15, and S is (.6, .5, .3)
.5*.3 = .15
@Geobits true

Q: Something's wrong with excavating (and some other badges too)

nicaelThe excavator has been awarded to... many users just some time ago. What a... bug? Certainly it is, too many unavailable posts :D Also looks like it's everywhere. SO's got a similar problem a couple of minutes before.

8:15 PM
isn't that pretty much the subset sum problem?

apparently people are getting duplicate Marshal and Excavator bugs

3 mins ago, by Geobits
Badges are going crazy o_O
There are only four posts on Meta about it, so it can't be that bad :P

@aditsu I don't know if it can be simplified to that, but they are similar

other than the integer part, I think it can

Oh, they started closing/deleting the dupes. Good :)

8:17 PM
also, I allow for repeated elements
so .25 could be constructed with .5 and .5

"given a set (or multiset)"

still slightly different, because there are no limitations on repeat counts
a multiset would say "You can only use 3 5s"
where I only impose that .5 is used a finite number of times
that said, I'm not sure how much of a difference that makes
actually, the problem is better represented using fractions

you can have enough repeats so that using any more would definitely not work

true
ok, so it looks like the subset product problem can be reduced to the subset sum problem
you factor the numbers and then you have N sum problems (where N is the number of prime factors)

I was thinking logarithms

8:28 PM
and fractions is the same thing: you have two subset product problems
the only iffy thing is fraction reduction
Intuitively, I think that that would simply add to the complexity, but I'm not sure

So after Wi-Fi we will have Wereo or something? Could market as "Wherever you go..." (there it is) — no comprende 3 hours ago

8:50 PM
Aww, my buggy badges went away :(

did you call pest control?

Yes, they sent over some guy named Nick Craver.

so..
what's the answer to martins image?

You should ask Martin ;)

he said u knew

8:52 PM
I'm saying he knows.

and you know?

I'm not saying even he said that.

Anyone feel like golfing a subnet string validator regex

@Geobits so that's where you hid the treasure

People keep saying things about me. I can't control that :P

boo

I'd rather not say if these things are or are not accurate.

Feb 24 '15 at 16:59, by Geobits
I heard a rumor it was set for May 14th.
I rest my case

May 14th has come and gone, and we're now no longer in beta. What's confusing about that?

I'm not quite sure how to feel about this discussion

A lack of feeling is probably the appropriate response.

9:16 PM
Can I request locking a question of mine that I think is poorly worded and would rather have no more action on?

9:39 PM
@flawr Yes. It needed to be reposted becuase nobody liked it.
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ no. That is the delete button iirc.
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ nice yup program
> well... yup.
10/10

@flawr fb*** <- is that you?
aka N8****

9:54 PM
monring

@mınxomaτ Yes=)

8kth in your country. But that's not saying much :D

I haven't played for ages^^

Me too, 127 days apparently. I got 500 coppers for me being away. Donated them.

What are those coppers anyway?

10:01 PM
Since Ubisoft decided to make the temporary freezone permanent, servers have to pay coppers to be listed for freezone players.
Also, in some versions you need them to build larger custom tracks.
I just always donate them to servers I like :-)

And how do you get coppers?
PS: Are you online?

For each version / key you bought (except on Steam), you get 50 a day. Boni are given for great runs and being away.
@flawr Not yet, I just tested if I can get a playable framerate. I did. But I have to eat first ;-)
Aw, I have such a nice number of points: 55 545.

10:24 PM
What game is this?
@flawr and @mınxomaτ?

@himarmjr Trackmania Nations Forever

okay

If you wanna play, download the "trackmania 1 demo"

I'll go online now.

I will not be able to play for too long anymore=)

A: Can I ask about assembly programming in the game "Human Resource Machine"?

LaurelI thought a little about this and I might have an even better idea. You're right that you have something a little too "fun" for Stack Overflow, but maybe a little too technical for Arqade (although you could post there and see if it attracts anything). But there is one site combining both of thes...

Does someone wanna take a look at this:
> But there is one site combining both of these realms a little:
Programming Puzzles and Code Golf
@flawr :)

@mınxomaτ Sorry, for some reason I cannot play, this is about the third game in a row where I am forced to stay spectator.

11:01 PM
Too bad I do not know any of those maps.

@flawr Just /afk before the map times out (at 10s left or so).
(or... buy the game. It's $ 8 :P)
Another thought: Did you by any change switch into spectator mode and the server is full?

11:21 PM
No i do not think so, there was the message about freezone etc.

We need a Meta.SE post for what PPCG is not.

If people read our meta posts, it wouldn't be an issue ;)

yeah, but people don't. And many people on meta SO/SE seem to think any "fun" coding goes here.

Ooooh, a meta.se post. That would probably get closed as off-topic.

yeah
but it would make the point.

11:26 PM
@himarmjr s/SE/PPCG/
@himarmjr posting an off-topic question just to get attention is not a good idea

okay

even if your intentions are good :)

Yeah, but like I said, I doubt a ppcg meta post would do any good.

an awesomely simply but effective meta post here that you can link to would be good

That's what the help center should explain (and is a good link target).

11:27 PM
I'd agree. I'm a little bit disappointed that the SE network generally misunderstands PPCG, but I don't the it's worth making a meta.se post.

Along with the community ads, you guys could do one of these

Nah, the community ads need to be nothing but kids kicking over sand castles :P

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ like an ad on PPCG that says "Unsure whether your post belongs here (on ppcg) or on SO? Read here"

Where are the community ad stats (as in how many times each has been clicked)? I can never remember how to find them.
nvm >_>

11:31 PM
http://meta.codegolf.stackexchange.com/ads/display/<ad question id>

Yes, I noticed there's a link at the end of the question too. Moving on... :P
I feel the issue is that it wouldn't lower the rate people on other sites "recommend" us anyway, which is what started this discussion. And once the recommendation is made, we already have link targets (help center, various meta posts, etc) to point people to. I don't think it's going to preemptively stop anyone from thinking "this should be on code golf", since most of the time the people that do that aren't even members and wouldn't bother reading/clicking an ad anyway.

11:53 PM
@Downgoat why are you upgoat now?

it's the second most clicked ad on Code Review
and interestingly my low voted oss docs ad is in third place

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I have to say, the meet the team videos are hilarious.

@himarmjr yup XD
@himarmjr yes :3

XD

BTW is the sandbox bot working?

11:57 PM
?
NewSandboxPosts? Yeah.
Just takes a bit.

@himarmjr Oh, yeah, that video XD
