@Zizouz212 I missed that one - I guess you got away with the joke because it is also a genuinely useful question :P

Oh yep, it looks way better on desktop.

Yep, a reason why it has an unusual favourite count :P

Grr. Why do they always have to schedule these for when I'm working?

Q: Join us for the second MSE Town Hall on Wednesday June 22nd

AnaLast month we got together with many of you in the Tavern for our first Meta Stack Exchange Town Hall. Like we shared in my original announcement, amazing as meta is, we need to do more to keep lines of communication open with the users who work alongside us making our software great in the longe...

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan Don't worry. I have a physics exam :P
I feel like I'm going to give that exam half-finished just so that I can participate. That's the spirit... It is the right spirit to have, right?

@Zizouz212 history exam :/

12:03 AM
Oh god.
Actually, history wasn't that bad.

@Zizouz212 I should do the same thing! I can imagine that going over well.
> "Hey boss, I'm done with work for the day." 'Oh, you got everything done?' "No, I just really want to chat with strangers on the internet."

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan or you know, alt-tab

"Miss! I need to go do something very important!" "And what is this important thing? Finish your exam!" "My exam is almost finished, and I want to go talk with strangers on the internet about how to talk on the internet!"

Zizouz212Here's Bub. A not-so-world-class soccer player. This is Bub. O __________________________________________________________ \|/ \ Hi Code Golfers! I need your help to improve my skills! | | |__________________________________________________________| / \ Bub is a soccer player. ...

last last year, my finals were cancelled due to snow. since then, we've only ever had 3 exams (math, english, language)

12:06 AM
@Maltysen No, I already spend way too much time on *.SE while I'm at work. Chat would make the problem 85,000 times worse.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I remember a couple years ago, it was -35 celsius, and we got 30 centimetres of snow the night before. Of course, I had a math exam the next day, and it took me an hour and a half just to get to school (thank god exams start at 10)

@Zizouz212 oh geez where do you live generally?

Awe! That's so cute!
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I live in Toronto. Where it shouldn't even be that bad.
Okay, to be fair, I live north of Toronto in the subs

12:08 AM
Weather here is crazy. -20 plus a windchill in the winter, and 30 plus the humidex in the summer.
This winter wasn't terrible because of the hot el nino thing. I'm excited for next year: isn't the nina cool thing supposed to come up?

I had to run in the dark, through a cemetary (I didn't run through there), to get to a local pub to do my math finals last week

30 cm? That's not too bad. I've had 6 foot (182 cm) drifts in my driveway before.

For some reason, the transit systems here should go move to the tropics. We get 5 cm of snow, and all of a sudden they break down or become 15-20 minutes late

chat mini challenge: given a string matching (last )+ year, output "X years ago" or "1 year ago", according to the number of last s there are.

Can I output the number in unary?

Anyways, opinions on my challenge... Sorry for the excitement. Since it's my first, I really want to get it out there

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan is it for retina?

The ladder latter

An @EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ came by.
How do you do today?

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan yes

110... 43 degrees?
How are you not dying?

idk
110°F though

Which is 43 celsius...
Sheesh... It's 25 celsius here and I think it's boiling hot

12:18 AM
._.
wait wtf
75F is not hot

But then add the humidex and it's maybe 30 or 32

oh right
@Zizouz212 I NEED YOUR HOUSE

Umm... 21 I think

google says 18

there's a website that compares country info like that... can't remember what it's called

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ okay, I'll try

@Quill okay brb moving to australia

sigh I tried.

12:23 AM
25 bytes is a pretty bad score for a "golfing language" but I still enjoy golfing in V. It does awesome at a very small subset of challenges, and awful at others.

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ + "year a go", and pluralization

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ That's not right.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ damnit

@RenderSettings I recognize your avatar from somewhere...

12:24 AM
What you did would be 12 bytes in V.

@Zizouz212 Pokemon \o/ I recolored the PI trainer sprite blue. It's pretty.

Yes! I remember now!
Diamond and Pearl...

Or 8 I suppose if you're ignoring "year"

56 bytes s=>`${l=s.match(/last /g).length} year${l-1?"s":""} ago`

It kind of reminds me of the trainer on that island that has the Lucario (one of my favourite pokemon!)

@Zizouz212 \o/ mine too

Riley is his name!
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I have a lot of 'em...

whose name?
@Zizouz212 I don't play :P

The trainer on that island with the Lucario

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ They were the first (and some of the only) games I had.

12:28 AM
cool!

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ :DDD
@Zizouz212 but but pong?

RikerWFound this out when trying to recite the alphabet in messages. When you hit the rate limit in chat, and there is 1 seconds left, it says the incorrect form. It shouldn't be plural. @CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ thanks for the cosmetic love. :P
I gtg, bye!

@Upgoat that's a strange error. I've ran into a very similar one many times, but never that particular one.

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan bingo

Right now I can't repro. I'll need to mess around with it some more and then I'll put some possible solutions on the github issue.

I think you accidentally an infinitive there.

hi

hi is anyone selling avocad?
I need avocad

@Upgoat Alright, I opened up a new issue. Once we get over this, it'll be easier to start writing docs.
If you wanna help with that, that would be awesome!

Can't you just use \xxxx?

yes
for unprintables
literally \xxxx in the code

Because that would make the byte count way larger

@JoeZ. Congrats on 10k!
looks like 10,051 as of now.

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ you wanna help me pick em out? You know python, right?

yes
but seriously, can you use \xxxx?
e.g. <nullbyte> -> \0000?

3:20 AM
The true beauty is not to use unprintables.
Pyth does that, and Pyth is still near the top.

In V or in python?
In python yes, v no.

Q: Optimize ranges

MCMasteryInput: 2D array of "ranges" (e.g. [[0, 4], [-2, 3], [-3, -1]]), where each array element contains start and end values. Assume the start value is always <= the end value. Also, the start and end values are always signed integers. Output: 2D array of "optimized ranges". Example: [[0, 4], [5, 7]...

@LeakyNun sure, but vim has unprintable keystrokes.

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan alright.

dangit, i had almost a solution to that challenge
lambda x:list(set().union(*[range(i[0],i[1]+1)for i in x]))

3:26 AM
And besides, what I'm doing isn't really any different than what jelly does.

milesBit-Reversal Permutations Your goal is to reverse the bits in a range of integers given an integer n. In other words, you want to find the bit-reversal permutation of a range of 2n items, zero-indexed. This is also the OEIS sequence A030109. For example, if n = 3, the range of integers is [0, 2...

I found a weird way to reload a page using JS
Object.getOwnPropertyNames(window).map(x=>window[x]='')

@LeakyNun nice
@LeakyNun no it really wasn't

Why not?

3:34 AM
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Why not?
damn, ninja'd

Unclear, a bit over complicated imo.

@LeakyNun I had S{srM

It was quite clear. To me.

Pretty much x u y.

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ It was very clear, and straightforward, too
:30474268 No, I mean that was only part of the solution

3:35 AM
@Doorknob But it was written that
> [[0, 4], [5, 7]] can be optimized into a single range: [[0, 7]]

Right, so that would be handled correctly

Not really.
If you use r, [[0,4],[5,7]] would become [0,1,2,3,5,6]

Er, yeah, replace r with }

And you get mine, lol
{S is really equivalent to S{.
But {S is faster

@Doorknob okay, that's fine.

3:38 AM
Oh, yeah. I was only looking at the end on yours :P

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ You mean f g f-1

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ ??

@MamaFunRoll window.location = window.location

@LeakyNun ???
what is f g f-1?

3:39 AM
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ ????
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ f-1 is the inverse of f

11 secs ago, by Eᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏ Iʀᴋ
what is f g f-1?

f^-1

@LeakyNun yes
but what is g

another function?
what was x u y?
g is sort and deduplicate

UTF-8 is a character encoding capable of encoding all possible characters, or code points, defined by Unicode and originally designed by Ken Thompson and Rob Pike. The encoding is variable-length and uses 8-bit code units. It was designed for backward compatibility with ASCII and to avoid the complications of endianness and byte order marks in the alternative UTF-16 and UTF-32 encodings. The name is derived from: Universal Coded Character Set + Transformation Format – 8-bit. UTF-8 is the dominant character encoding for the World Wide Web, accounting for 87.1% of all Web pages in June 2016 (with...

@LeakyNun UTF-8 was designed with other aspects in mind. For example, if any single byte is lost in the transmission, only the character it corresponds to is affected.

4:50 AM
@Dennis which brought rise to my next point.
@Dennis However, it can still be shorter with that in mind.
1. 0XXXXXXX
2. 10XXXXXX 0XXXXXXX
3. 110XXXXX 0XXXXXXX 0XXXXXXX
4. 1110XXXX 0XXXXXXX 0XXXXXXX 0XXXXXXX
