@Downgoat @ZachGates @AlexA. @EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ You guys better hurry with the GCJ if you want to qualify.

Yeah
I did A but I haven't figured out a good way to do B yet

Oh wow, you're super far behind :P

Yeah
I probably won't end up participating this year

Well, magpies are one of the most intelligent birds ... so you can do it.

@TheNumberOne Not going to.

10:05 PM
@TheNumberOne :)

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ which one are you?

RikerW

Lt. W Riker? :)

Pretzel design change: higher-order functions (like fold) are not really functions: they are constants that, when passed to a function, change its behavior. This makes parsing easier and more consistent without negatively affecting byte count. For example, to find the max of array a, one would do >\a (where `\` is the fold operator)

actually, first officer

10:09 PM
Are you now going to confuse RikerW and TheNumberOne?

Make it so

B is super easy if you just think about it
I finally got home and am working on a u64-(bigint-on-overflow) solution for C large :P

@Doorknob I have been

even D is not that hard

@aditsu Commander... :P

10:11 PM
I have 45 points so I don't know why I'm doing this but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ it's been a long time :p

No excuse. :P

@Doorknob I used BigInteger for that one

@Doorknob oh you haven't solved C? it's easy, I did it first

Actually quite fun having Riker W. as my real name, when W. Riker is a famousish fictional character.

10:12 PM
@aditsu I did C small but C large overflows 64 bits

Why does it say my time for A is 22 minutes? o_O

of course there's a not-brute-force way but I don't want to use my brain

@Doorknob definitely the simplest of the four

> is super easy if you just think about it

10:12 PM
>_>

@MartinBüttner ;-;

@aditsu C took me forever to figure out.
well "forever" compared to the others

@AlexA. Somebody else isn't doing it either, you have a compadre in lazyness. ^_^

"Wow, that's pretty short!"

10:13 PM
@MartinBüttner the actual solving-the-problem part of my code is literally 9 lines of Rust

Oh.

@Doorknob 7 bytes in Retina ;)

haha

numbering the lines for the output format was much harder

10:14 PM
13 lines for me in kotlin + 16 for I/O :/

7 bytes in Retina?!

I bet it's pretty short in Pyth too

@AlexA. plus about 50 bytes I/O framework, yeah

Damm sum

7 bytes in retina to solve what?

10:16 PM
Coogle Code Jam B

^ that

I didn't really golf B, got 217 and 569 bytes
(including some comments)

Comments? What is this, Code Review? :P

I'm going to enjoy reading everyone's code afterwards.

> Coogle

10:18 PM
well, some programs are not necessarily obvious how to run

Coogle Gode Yam

Poodle Geode Jam

Joodle Doodle Pood Dude

Coogle Jode Gam

10:20 PM
shoot, the shortest I can get for B is 11 bytes in Pyth :P (@MartinBüttner)

You guys are golfing it and I don't even know how to do it ;-;

Code jam b was super easy
I can't think of a way to do C without bruteforce though

(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

I'm probably just not thinking well enough though

10:21 PM
(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

@AlexA. Just do it as if you were a pancake waiter with x-ray vision :P

Like all good pancake chefs

@AlexA. YANA.....

I am a pancake waiter with X-ray vision.
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ ?

You are not alone in having problems.

10:22 PM
My question B solution is a really gross two-liner that bruteforces that I split up nicer in the source file (but it's still in essence a two-liner

@AlexA. Well ... you need more practice.

er
Question C
Question C is nice because you can check to see if it runs in time before you even download input :p

I am a waiter X-ray with pancake vision

> pancake vision
legit
@LockOpeners Is your avatar Danny DeVito or the pope or something?

@AlexA. I've given you some hints in the other channel. ;-)

10:24 PM
It's the ice cream taster guy

@AlexA. it's gotta be one of the two

@LockOpeners 6/10

5/7 would recommend

++
8/10 with rice
@ChrisJester-Young is there a secret codejam channel?

10:28 PM
I just started CodeJam.
I named my Sheep program "Sjepp"

@PhiNotPi do the problems in order; they're pretty much ordered by difficulty
translate en: sjepp
(from English) sjepp

@LockOpeners actually, there is

@Doorknob See? It's valid English.

can I come in

10:29 PM
have you solved everything? :p

no :(
I can't be bothered to do D
my brain isn't turned on all the way today

@PhiNotPi na'e drani .i la'o gy. bing .gy. bebna

@PhiNotPi Username?

@Doorknob you must be dutch

@TheNumberOne PhiNotPi, probably :P

10:31 PM
oops
wrong person
@PhiNotPi

Q: Draw a spiral in a box

CoolestVeto This geometric spiral looks complicated, but it's fairly simple to draw; take the following box: Draw a straight line between the corner of the box and some set distance above the next corner counter-clockwise. Continue this pattern inward, always staying that set distance away from the c...

No he's from the UK (at least I think)

@LockOpeners are you on irc?

@quartata Nope

I'm not
I didn't know there was one

10:32 PM
@AlexA. oh I'm dumb

where is it?

The internet

the official channel is #gcj on freenode

@TheNumberOne PhiNotPi

Oh
Collab is allowed for the qual round?

10:33 PM
Yes.

Didn't realize that

But not for the other rounds

@AlexA. You were right :D

yeah.. but no direct spoilers

Quick, someone give me ASCII characters to represent the min/max functions! ><mMxX already taken

10:34 PM
Are there language restrictions for GCJ ?

oh. In that case, here's a hint for B... rz8
@TheNumberOne no

@TheNumberOne No

For any of the rounds?

@Doorknob Run length encode?

@TheNumberOne the language must be published before the round starts

10:36 PM
@TheNumberOne It has to be freely available with the exceptions of Matlab, Excel, and something else.

Mathematica?

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@AlexA. And Visual Studio.

Oh okay

Only 2 people used kotlin last year for google code jam :(

10:42 PM
I don't think it's all that widely used in general

I've been considering using Factor
but I don't trust my ability to write Factor code quickly

Pancakes was super-easy.

:/

yeah
it really was
sorry alex

It really is.

10:46 PM
I'm not used to seeing Chris's name in italics instead of blue :(

I didn't realize it was easy last night

@Doorknob I know, right? It's new to me too.

but lying in bed I was like "oh wait I can just do this"
and I tried it this morning and I was right

@LockOpeners Doorknob and I were trading solutions. There is easy, and then there's even easier. ;-)

my solution is pretty easy
4 method calls in p6
probably could do fewer

10:50 PM
Mine's 9 lines of Rust, and it could be way shorter :P

I could probably just do it with regex
but can't be bothered

Martin did. 7-byte Retina solution, he says :D

yeah
probably used the same idea
except with regex instead of methods

@Doorknob I always think this language is written backwards when I see a phrase in it. :P

which?

10:51 PM
la jbobau

ah
I was into lojban for a bit
but I haven't bothered with it for a couple years now

@Doorknob Click on it and it'll become blue.

Mia Esperanto kapablo estas multe pli bone ol mia Lojban
if we're talking about constructed langs

zo'o sai spero .iu nai

I have a stump of a conlang. :P

10:56 PM
I suppose that could be worded
Mia Esperanto kapablo pli bonas ol mia Lojban
or multe pli bonas

11:07 PM
@El'endiaStarman I have a phonemic inventory for one
Been meaning to flesh out the phonetics and then move onto the morphology
but exam season isn't a great time for that

Sweet.
Haha, indeed.

Isn't Esperanto like Spanish but fake?

not really

can't tell if trolling

Parseltongue is my favorite, unfortunately you can't type it.

11:08 PM
It pulls roots mostly from romantic languages (specifically french)
but also some slavic and germanic and some asian languages

Though it isn't really a constructed language :)

probably other languages too

@PhiNotPi Only C & D now :)

I have no idea to do C without bruteforce and D

@AlexA. It looks like you finished B :D

11:11 PM
makes me feel bad on the inside

Haha yep!
Debating whether I care enough to try C or D

nice
I did A and B and C-small
which is 45 if all is right

same here

so I'm not gonna bother with D or C-large

@Doorknob >:U

11:11 PM
D-small is very easy.

I think I have a really easy solution for D-small, but it almost seems too easy
@TheNumberOne okay, that's reassuring :P

Try it
@TheNumberOne I'm just not seeing it idk

For CGJ always look at the limits for inputs.

S=K is really helpful (it seems)

One thing I don't like about GCJ is 1-based indexing.

11:15 PM
40 mins ago, by Cyoce
Quick, someone give me ASCII characters to represent the min/max functions! ><mMxX already taken

Do you just check all the tiles?

@Doorknob That's why they included the warning. If tou take the easy way out, you won't be able to verify your algorithm for the large set.

right

wait no I'm dumb
I'll probably see the solution and go like "d'oh"
but
I'm not seeing it right now

"Too much Martin Büttner. I'll browse the HNQ"
Strangely relevant (specifically around 1:40, but the entire thing is worth watching). — Martin Büttner 13 mins ago

11:26 PM
There's no such thing as "too much Martin Büttner."
10

haha

ok, well D-small was as easy as I thought it was

CAN'T GET ENOUGH MARTIN!

88 bytes of ungolfed Ruby

Nice :)
I'm taking my chances that A and B large are correct and I'm just going "meh" on C and D

11:29 PM
the problem with doing D small that way is that you don't get verification of your real algorithm

I just found this:
With the exception of the Qualification Round, you are not allowed to collaborate with other participants — or with anyone else, for that matter — during a contest. This includes discussing, sharing, or posting the problem statements or solutions. Any contestant found cheating or attempting to cheat will be disqualified.

yeah

I thought I had the right algorithm, but it failed on D-small

I took the easy way out and did the thing specific to the small dataset

Standard loophole: Optimizing for the given test cases!

11:30 PM
I'm at 37 without the larges now, and 55 with them :P

I figured out at least one optimization that gives S < K

I'm pretty sure I figured out the right algorithm for S < K

but either there's a edge case I didn't consider for, or there's another optimization

Can I give hints?

you can

11:32 PM
Toucans are members of the family Ramphastidae of near passerine birds from the Neotropics. The Ramphastidae family is most closely related to the American barbets. They are brightly marked and have large often-colorful bills. The family includes five genera and about forty different species. The name of this bird group is derived from the Tupi word tukana, via Portuguese. The family includes toucans, aracaris and toucanets; more distant relatives include various families of barbets and woodpeckers in the suborder Pici. == Morphology == Toucans range in size from the lettered aracari (Pteroglossus...

you can spoilerify them if you want (hover over that link to view the spoiler)

how do I do that?

[example](URL "text")

[text](example.com "spoiler text")

awesome
oooh, with that spoiler, I figured out my problem

11:38 PM
rubberducking!

I'm working on D-large right now.

@PhiNotPi oh you're doing gcj too? same username?

@PhiNotPi are you dutch

@NathanMerrill That's what I did.

@quartata Because I've been procrastinating hard. :P

11:44 PM
@LockOpeners Close.

Belgiumish (What do you call people from belgium)?
oh

jk, you weren't close at all. I'm American.

Belgian
duh
oh
I only ask because "Sjeep"

hi everyone

@LockOpeners half my file names are intentional typos.

@El'endiaStarman I can't really answer that because a) I don't get how that's such a big "character trait" (if at all) to warrant a book and b) I'm probably more of an entrepreneur than programmer in my every day life ;-)

@KennyLau .i .ui ji'a mi na go'i

@Doorknob I sort of gave up so I only know the basic grammatical structure and am now dependent on this

Also, Memrise and Anki are good for vocabulary
@KennyLau .u'i
{bangu baupli} doesn't make much sense. That means "language-language-use"

What is CLL? According to google CLL is Chronic lymphocytic leukemia

@Doorknob .i mo do baupli
