7:00 PM
and I totally agree :)

@PhiNotPi Maybe use G(F(A)) instead of G(A), it will probably cover most use cases.
And giving it values instead of functions should convert them to constant functions with those outputs.

@Downgoat Mine just replaced the highlighted code block with a brace. I'd actually be frustrated if that changed, because I always use highlight + type to replace the highlighted text with whatever I type next.

Then ModifyWith(A, [i..j], reverse) will reverse the sub-array from i to j, for example.

Cool. I just discovered the "extract method" shortcut in Visual Studio. That's handy.

@Zgarb So, lets say we had A=[2,5,7], F(x)=x+3, G(x)=x*2. Then F(indexes of A) -> [3,4,5], and G(F(A)) -> [10,16,20], then zipped is [[3,10],[4,16],[5,20]], and then this sets A=[,,,10,16,20]
Wait, are G and F supposed to take single numbers, or the entire array as an argument?

7:08 PM
The entire array.

So F(x)=x+3, G(x)=x*2 isn't accurate?

We can assume they thread over arrays, so that works

Is my example valid, then?
Or, should A be [2,5,7,10,16,20] in the end?

Yeah, A should be the 6-element array

For other onlookers, here's a Google form for Phigs suggestions: docs.google.com/forms/d/…

7:13 PM
The point is that A is modified to another array B so that F(B) looks like G(F(A))

My computer build idea.
But currently I don't have the required parts, only the list.

Does anyone know what version of gcc has _Generic?

And there are things that are subjective.

@Zgarb What other uses are there?

7:15 PM
For example, the choice of OS and peripherals.

I think my gcc is too old to use _Generic

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ where r u going?

Also, the Corsair power supply can hold the power of 430 wat. That's an excess amount.

@PhiNotPi Well, I don't know about other uses, but easy modification of arbitrary sub-arrays sounds convenient to have.

7:19 PM
> 430 wat
lol

Of course, you could have special syntax for that too.

It's not that we find it "disturbing," it's just lost most of its humor value and has become purely annoying.

@Mego Ah, I assumed v2 was farther along in it development that it is. Good luck

@quartata :(

7:28 PM
@Sherlock9 It's still missing a major piece - the transpiling to Python

Anonymous
@quartata s/most/all/

so did you guys try out the installer? @zyabin101 told me it didn't work for him

installer for what

Python 3.6
check starboard

@quartata Granted, I don't think it ever had humor value.

7:30 PM
well i'm on linux…

Anonymous
The installer ran, but I haven't tried using it yet

do the python people not have an installer for it?

Anonymous
Not yet

Anonymous
It's too new

It's just an unfunny GIF that makes me want to vomit because I get really bad motion sickness.

7:31 PM
It makes me want to vomit too, but that's just because it's so bad

On a somewhat related note, I'd probably keel over if I watched Hardcore Henry.

Hello

It looks barfy as hell
@ZachGates o/

How's everyone doing

Finally another saved part list! \o/
It's a bit less price, but one big point: the AMD processor has no video card. So wattage will be bigger.

7:34 PM
@ZachGates TGIF

@AlexA. I'd love to watch Hardcore Henry if it was showing in my country, but I may have a higher tolerance for shakycam
Though this tolerance is barely tested
Also, did you hear about Hardcore Henry from Rooster Teeth?

To compare: the other part list has a video card included, less wattage, but more expensive.

@Sherlock9 In a roundabout way; an ad for it played before an RT video.

@AlexA. Retweet video?

Retweet?

7:36 PM
Real time video?

I don't use Twitter
I'm not sure what you mean

Ah. Rooster Teeth episodes have been sponsored by Hardcore Henry lately
@zyabin101 Rooster Teeth
@AlexA. Or, one of the podcasts was, at least

@zyabin101 Ohhhh RT. Yes, RT = Rooster Teeth in this case.

@Mego: Just finished getting all medals in Learn 2 Fly. My favorites are Planet Crusher and I.C.B.P.. :P

@El'endiaStarman Next up: Teach to Fly?

7:38 PM
@zyabin101 Nope, Learn to Fly 3! :P

@QPaysTaxes Like type before or after value?

@El'endiaStarman L3F?! @_@

@AlexA. Have you heard that I'm bringing Phigs back?

@PhiNotPi I haven't! THIS IS VERY EXCITING TO ME!
Phi's Golfo Supreme is most supreme golfo language

> _UNK
FTFY

7:41 PM
I wunt Phi's Lang Non-golf Bowlo Supreme ;_;
Or Phi's New Language, if so you mean.

@TimmyD I ' m not sure if you ' re going to be a good idea

Oh dear

> Ò_Ó
FIFY

@QPaysTaxes Golfing language or regular language? If the former, why bother with types?
haha

@zyabin101 More Ó_Ò than Ò_Ó

7:45 PM
@TimmyD I can't make the letter tha on a phone.

@El'endiaStarman I haven't played LTF2 in ages

I played LTF3 for like 15 minutes and then decided that I wasn't going to have as much fun with it.

It's pretty fun to mess around in Sandbox mode

Right now I'm trying to see if the game suffers from integer/double overflow

7:59 PM
Woah, I didn't know 3 ever got released. I'll have to play it.
For a real flash game throwback, I'm still waiting for the next Murloc RPG.

8:15 PM
@Mego You know you're a true computer geek when...

Anonymous
There's a height cap

Anonymous

@Mego pretty sure that's true of all previous versions
also, have fun reaching double overflow
the numbers get really big

Anonymous
Yeah but this one is specifically about going to space, so the cap is higher

Anonymous
8:18 PM
The height cap for LTF1 was like 32k iirc

half of the fun with LFT was the bouncing
do they have like clouds you bounce on?

Anonymous
Nope

Anonymous
But there is stuff in the air that you can hit and it knocks you around

Anonymous
Like balloons, kites, planes, space shuttles, and UFOs

@Mego haha

8:33 PM
does it take more energy to orbit the earth vs escape earth's gravity?

@NathanMerrill I think so, yes.
Yeah, orbital velocity is 30 km/s whereas escape velocity is 11.2 km/s.

A: Does it actually make fun using golf-focused languages for golf type questions?

Alex A.Is it fun to use golfing languages? That depends on whether you like to use golfing languages. Not sure? Try it and find out. As is evidence by their prevalence on the site, a lot of people do like using golfing languages. Is it fun when other people use golfing languages? That depends on whethe...

I tried to be as diplomatic as possible
It was hard not to ಠ_ಠ or (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ once or twice in there

@AlexA. You did very well in that regard.

you'd also be dealing with more air friction with orbital launch
that's crazy

@El'endiaStarman Thank you :)

lol, wikipedia has a publicly available "clear cache" button
how is that not abused

@NathanMerrill The first stage does most/all of the work of getting out of the atmosphere. Apparently, with a reusable Falcon 9 rocket launch, the first stage separates at ~2.0 km/s.
@NathanMerrill Maybe it only works on your own cache?

@AlexA. I ran some statistics and found that 95% of my answers are in PowerShell. The other 5% are a couple KOTH, a couple BATCH file answers, and a VBScript. I think you summed up my feelings really well without the table-flip approach.

@El'endiaStarman its in a form with the parameter "purge=true"

Huh. Well, I guess if it were abusable, it would have been abused by now, so...

8:44 PM
@TimmyD I'm glad to hear that. :)

Though, it is an awesome feeling when PowerShell gets really close, like on the IPv6 challenge.

Haha true
Using a regular language, "OH SHIT I ALMOST BEAT (PYTH|CJAM|...)" is amazing.

Yep.

Haha so it goes

@TimmyD s/IPv6/UUID

8:48 PM
@AlexA. I don't think that that is what this site should be about though

No, and I don't think it is
It's just a nice feeling
Making code in a "regular" language that's competitive against a language designed to be short takes some ingenuity.

I mean, its way awesome and all, but I don't think its a good argument for code golf languages.

Anonymous
I've just made a major overhaul to my sandboxed challenge: meta.codegolf.stackexchange.com/questions/2140/…

really, the best argument for a code golf language is "we don't know where the line is"

8:50 PM
I'm not sure what you mean
I'm not trying to make an argument for or against anything

where's the line for what a golfing language is

Anonymous
I decided code golf was not a good fit for the challenge, since the problem is harder than NP (even verifying that a solution is optimal cannot be done in polynomial time)

Personally, I tend to find myself competing against JavaScript and Python, as those tend to be closest in terms of byte count.

Anonymous
And submissions would probably take around 3 lifetimes of the universe to finish

Is the design goal of the language to be as short as possible? => Golfing language. IMO.

8:51 PM
@QPaysTaxes They have way too much fun, those "scientists"

@AlexA. Diplomatic indeed!

But it doesn't really matter what constitutes a golfing language since we allow any language

@AlexA. intuitively, that's easy. As a rule, that's impossible

Why does there need to be a rule?

Good thing we don't have a rule, then.

Anonymous
8:52 PM
@QPaysTaxes Stuff like The Martian is why I don't want to be an astronaut

that's my point. There are a lot of people that would like that rule, but its an impossible rule

@QPaysTaxes I would already have enough fun sitting in that capsule during that test=)

Ah.

@flawr :D

@NathanMerrill What rule though? I'm not clear on what you mean.
A rule on what constitutes a golfing language doesn't make a difference for anything

8:54 PM
I genuinely think this site would be better without golfing languages. That said, its impossible to make a rule of what a "golfing" language is

@AlexA. I think he's meaning the proposed "bans" on golfing languages, or the various attempts at trying to weigh scoring.

so, because the rule is impossible, we allow golfing languages

Anonymous
@QPaysTaxes I'm aware of that. What I was talking about was the potential for so much to go wrong and the crippling loneliness.

@NathanMerrill We allow them not because a ruling is impossible but because we allow any language.

Anonymous
8:55 PM
If you don't like golfing languages, don't pay attention to them. Plain and simple.

4 mins ago, by Alex A.
Is the design goal of the language to be as short as possible? => Golfing language. IMO.

Dagnabit.

@AlexA. that depends. we do have a meta post that defines what a programming language is, which disallows HQ9+

@TimmyD That's some Loony Toons vocab right there

Anonymous
@NathanMerrill His statement is still accurate. HQ9+ isn't a programming language.

8:56 PM
@AlexA. What in tarnation are you going on about, son?

@Mego only because we define it so

Why wouldn't you call a golfing language a programming language? I'm fairly certain that all of the ones created on this site are Turing complete
which is a more stringent requirement than we require to qualify as a language

Bubblegum is Turing complete
So is Cinnamon Gum

Anonymous
HQ9+ can do exactly 3 things. We have had those 3 challenges already. Even if HQ9+ was allowed, it wouldn't be able to compete in any other challenges.

Well, theoretically.

8:58 PM
@quartata Is it actually turning complete or only theoretically?

Anonymous
That would be Bubblegum

@AlexA. oh, they are certainly a programming language. But since we are already in the business of defining what kind of submissions we allow, we could define that we didn't want golfing languages (if it was possible)

Anonymous
I don't think Bubblegum is TC

@NathanMerrill I don't think most people would agree that we would want to exclude golfing languages.

@El'endiaStarman This article contains information about a rocket launch that is scheduled to occur in the next minute. <- that is what it says for me...

@QPaysTaxes Yes, hence "theoretically."
I haven't actually made a Turing machine in it :P
