Haha, yeah, that won't work. If that were the case, the object would be at the center of Earth... :P

@quartata Challenge accepted. (Although a lot of people tend to not learn great languages like CJam and Pyth for various reasons.)
(Me included)
(:P)

Just had an epiphany. I think the points where gravitational force is the same from two objects do form a circle! It's just that its center is offset!

yeah
did you look at the link?
The circle of Apollonius is any of several types of circles associated with Apollonius of Perga, a renowned Greek geometer. Most of these circles are found in planar Euclidean geometry, but analogs have been defined on other surfaces; for example, counterparts on the surface of a sphere can be defined through stereographic projection. The main uses of this term are fivefold: Apollonius showed that a circle can be defined as the set of points in a plane that have a specified ratio of distances to two fixed points known as foci. This circle of Apollonius is the basis of the Apollonius pursuit problem...
A and B are the masses

I wasn't sure that we knew the ratio was fixed.

@BlockCoder1392 E is the empty string. I think you can coerce that?

2:06 AM
m1/d1^2 = m2/d2^2
m1 d2^2 = m2 d1^2

No as I am incrementing it.

But I figured it out by doing a mental scaling of the masses from equal to zero and non-zero and thinking about what the shape should be.
Ah, right, yes.

I wonder if C is that stationary point

no, just trying to make a counter-like thing

@El'endiaStarman are you confirming that, or wondering along with me? :P

Now that I think about it, I have no idea how to declare variables in Jolf.

@Maltysen I'm pretty sure you're right.
If forces are equal at every point on the circle...
But now I'm thinking about how to find these points for three or more bodies.
With a numerical approach, that is.
Well, numerical in the sense that I won't have symbolic equations that I solve.

@El'endiaStarman oh right! that makes sense

It's Voronoi, but with a different distance function, so to speak.

2:12 AM
the multiple mass version? ^

@BlockCoder1392 ~5 is 16 but not a variable

That's fine.

@Maltysen Yeah.

I wonder how to get the traditional equation for a circle from the appolonian one
googling didn't help on that one

Well, the center is halfway between the equilibrium and its antipode...
The radius is half the distance...

2:16 AM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ how do you declare vars in Jolf? (if possible)

the antipode is where the force vector themselves are equal

x = -r/(sqrt(m2/m1) - 1)
yes?

so the radius is (-r/(sqrt(m2/m1) - 1) - r/(sqrt(m2)/sqrt(m1) + 1) )/ 2
cool!

2:19 AM
I think so, yes.

this is really neat stuff

yeah :D

what are you gonna use the multiple point thing for in your game?

It won't be a game, more like a toy.
You'll be able to add and remove gravitational bodies and adjust their masses.

and look at the force field?

2:21 AM
The Voronoi diagram will update in real time.
Yeah.

will the voronoi diagram be for all the points where the forces from all of them are equal?

hmm, no, not exactly
You know what Voronoi diagrams are?

no

ah
In mathematics, a Voronoi diagram is a partitioning of a plane into regions based on distance to points in a specific subset of the plane. That set of points (called seeds, sites, or generators) is specified beforehand, and for each seed there is a corresponding region consisting of all points closer to that seed than to any other. These regions are called Voronoi cells. The Voronoi diagram of a set of points is dual to its Delaunay triangulation. Put simply, it's a diagram created by taking pairs of points that are close together and drawing a line that is equidistant between them and perpendicular...

so your voronoi diagram will be based on force vectors instead of distance?

2:24 AM
basically, yeah
Their magnitudes, that is.

but a thing placed in one region could go into another one's right?

yeah
There are fractals based on that.
The Newton fractal is a boundary set in the complex plane which is characterized by Newton's method applied to a fixed polynomial . It is the Julia set of the meromorphic function which is given by Newton's method. When there are no attractive cycles (of order greater than 1), it divides the complex plane into regions , each of which is associated with a root of the polynomial, . In this way the Newton fractal is similar to the Mandelbrot set, and like other fractals it exhibits an intricate appearance arising from a simple description. It is relevant to numerical analysis because it shows that...

I saw that before, I don't get how that's related to voronoi diagrams

Well, gravity probably won't exhibit this behavior, but a magnet on a pendulum will (when other, attracting magnets are placed on the table).
@Maltysen If you track which cell the object is in, it might display fractal-like behavior.
But I'm not after that. Just the Voronoi. :P

sounds cool
will you also display the regular force field?

2:27 AM
Yeah.
I'll add a checkbox to turn it on or off.

you should allow line integrals
like I'll sketch a path and you tell me the line integral over the field

....wanna help?

sure!

awesome
You seem pretty excited about this, so... :P

oh I see! the circle we did before is a voronoi diagram cu inside the circle is B's influence, outside is A
but that doesn't make sense

2:30 AM
right

what about point D
or D+1

D is on the border.

D+1 is outside the circle but looks like it should be attracted by B

The influence of A is stronger.
Barely.

is it really?

2:32 AM
Well, the math says so...
Don't mistake the thing falling towards B as being more strongly attracted by B.

wow that's pretty counter intuitive

@ՊՓԼՃՐՊՃՈԲՍԼ oVARvalue

But you can go to the extreme to help with the intuition. Think of the Sun and Earth. Now, is Jupiter more strongly attracted by the Sun or the Earth?

oh I see
as you move far enough away, the distance between B and A become negligible

2:34 AM
I'm not sure if that's the right way to think about it.
It's that the force exerted by B falls off more rapidly than the force exerted by A.

@El'endiaStarman why?

That's a regular Voronoi diagram.
z = x^2 + y^2 is a cone.

is there a fast algo for voronoi's of arbitrary metrics

I dunno.

@El'endiaStarman wait how is that a cone?
isnt z=x^2+y^2 a paraboloid?

2:38 AM
Every z-slice is a circle.
oh, my bad
That's z = sqrt(x^2 + y^2).

ah k

And wow, Google has an awesome graphing tool now!
Google it!

its been there for like three years

3:23 AM
I've got gravity voronoi to code!

I just watched the new Star Wars movie

did you like it?

Worst movie I've seen this entire year

only movie youve see this entire year?

Yes :P

3:30 AM
lol

@Doorknob冰 It's not that bad. But it sure doesn't follow the comics.

No, I liked it. I mean, it's the best movie I've seen all year. :P

3:57 AM
@El'endiaStarman I'm kinda curious what the voronoi looks like.

Me too.

IIRC correctly, if there of two stars of unequal masses, there is actually a perfect circle around the smaller one where its force is strongest.

That being the basis of "spheres of influence" in stuff like Kerbal and other games.

Though the center is offset.
Right.

3:58 AM
@ՊՓԼՃՐՊՃՈԲՍԼ Comics?

This is a list of comic books set in the fictional Star Wars universe. Lucasfilm's now-corporate sibling Marvel Comics, which published Star Wars comics from 1977 to 1986, are once again publishing Star Wars titles starting in 2015. Dark Horse Comics owned the license to publish Star Wars comics from Lucasfilm exclusively from 1991 to 2014. The only comics considered canon are those released starting in 2015. For a complete list of Star Wars novels please refer to Star Wars books. This list is incomplete; you can help by expanding it. This list is split into two categories: CANON The new primary...

@ChristianIrwan Your task list is still a little unclear. Your test cases are confusing (you don't need to say language, just input/output). You need to add more detail to that question, because, as I voted, it's still not clear enough yet what this question requires. I'll suggest some things in chat after this, but that was my reasoning
"Output a program in the same language that also obeys this specification, but which does not contain the input character." which specification?
So is it a quine or not? What kind of output do you want?
In the test case that I quote below, which of the lines is the input, which is the output and what is the rest?
> slangi "ABCD"
A
EBCD # "FBCD" "JGGJ" "UGDKJGDJK" are all OK
Are you calling the program, input A, then the output? Because that is not clear at all

@Sherlock9 "ABCD" is a program that, given input "A", will output some program "EBCD" where "EBCD" is functionally equivalent to "ABCD" but doesn't contain the character "A". So the program "EBCD", when run with another input "C", should output a third equivalent program, and so on.
So it's not really a quine, but each program must output a 'version' of itself without a certain character
