@Sp3000 getting ever closer to that factor of 2 ;)

Inching now, inching...
(with a bit of help)

And I'm just happy with my factor of 3.

Wish I could be as awesome as Octave with 0 errors, but I don't think I can if I'm copying and rotating

Me too :( My answer is perfect for the first quadrant, but has a few lines of error on the reflections. Not something I can fix without sacrificing some serious bytes.

Hm... even in imaginary GolfPython (*not Pyth) where zip returns lists of lists and print is both a statement and a function... I'd still be a byte short from 2x

12:32 AM
I can get the first quadrant with zero errors for just a few more bytes. (I added almost 100 errors to save two bytes) ... but the remaining ones are then due to the lack of rotational symmetry in the binarisation

Hmm I guess we just need to pick a language with a good binarisation then. Too bad all the simplest ones are practically unusable :(

I have the opportunity to gain 3 bytes for 140 more errors... The output looks obviously wrong, though.

My one's pretty obviously wrong :P
There's holes everywhere

all my errors are off-by-one :P
but I guess I'm quite lucky that the gs2 guy can't be bothered to golf his submission :D

12:59 AM
Haha, I wonder if they realize just how close they are.

2 hours later…
2:31 AM
Got a gold badge!

Fanatic ahaha nice

3:10 AM
Does anyone know what k_g is referring to?

Yeah I've been confused too
Woop looks like they've sorted it out
I thought they were referring to dropping accuracy for bytes, but I guess not

2 hours later…
5:38 AM
Oh boy, regex golf with choices!
@Calvin'sHobbies I believe the grandparents are the wrong way around?

6:39 AM
so... @Sp3000 is also into CJam now !!

I wanted the er :(

errr

errrr

6:52 AM
code-golf becomes really interesting when you already have a target to beat

I usually try and get within twice a Python or Ruby score (with C#) if there is one
and as only about 2 other users that use C#, there is rarely anyone telling me I'm not doing a good enough job

And I usually try to get within 2xCJam :P (usually it's impossible but it's very nice when it is)

Well, in the case of Identicon, my goal is still 1xOptimizer :D

Optimizer does not exist
ok 45 first pass

7:14 AM
rewrote the dungeon question into calculating the depth for the greedy approach, and added detailed example
1
A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

randomraDigits Digging a Dungeon code-golf simulation numbers Given a non-decreasing list of one-digit positive integers, you should determine how deep dungeon they will dig. Before the start of the digging the ground is level. ███ ███ A dungeon with 5 blocks removed and a depth of 3. ███ ███ ███ ...

proving/disproving the greedy method's optimality become a bonus puzzle

Ahaha okay

I couldn't even prove your statement, that you only need to dig on one side of the maximum only

I was thinking that could be a first step to proving greedy's optimal
I was trying to come up with an example like 3x1 and 3x2, where you have to do
11
21
2
2
which is nongreedy, but in this case you can switch that around and do this instead:
11
21
 2
 2
And the thing is in the first one, all of them are forced to jump the max height they can jump, but in the second that's not the case for, say, the left column's 2
So I was wondering if you could do some sort of "the greedy algorithm guarantees keeping the best set of digits remaining after each move" argument, but I'm not sure

well greedy using the digits in increasing order so it keeps the best set in pure values
your one-side statement could help a lot as it might be used inductively for the next columns as those could also be approached from one side (the shallower one)

7:31 AM
Oh you posted ><>stac... I mean StickStack

7:42 AM
yeah, do you know why the first ~ is needed in Martin's StickStack evaluator? q'|/"]_,+~"*~

Splat array?
Try inserting debug statements

ahh, I thought that's eval too

Hmmm pretty.
It almost looks as though there's patterns

is that a bruteforced optimal?

Unless I've done something wrong, yes.
Hmmm 2's longer than 3

8:16 AM
@Optimizer good talk

@randomra they would never know
except the two diamonds

I think they still wouldn't know if we know though

2 hours later…
9:57 AM
Added time-complexity requirement: meta.codegolf.stackexchange.com/a/5193/7311
@MartinBüttner it's almost the same task as your book stacking but luckily the algorithms are quite different
that is a cool challenge though

@randomra Is the only difference that you've got three properties and that you only ask for the largest subsequence?

largest monotonic set

well yes

you can permute the books
one way to see it is that you need to find the longest path in a partial ordering
but there are other polynomial methods

yeah that makes sense. "subsequence" wasn't quite the right term.

10:45 AM
Does anyone know about Community Wiki notification rules?
Will comments on my sandbox answer show up in my notifications now that my answer is CW? That's my main concern, especially if we are using comment notification to check if old answers are eligible for being adopted by someone else. — trichoplax 52 secs ago

11:06 AM
@trichoplax left a comment

@MartinBüttner It works :)

11:32 AM
@MartinBüttner it went like iv expected before , integer division made people repulsed off this challenge
this comment explains
iwould reward 50pts for whoever brings up an appreciated work , after 12h

11:57 AM
@MartinBüttner Are you going to mod-chain the new male/female challenge too? :P

do/should we have a meat/main site post for deadline-less bounty offers?
I would be interested what others find interesting/bounty worthy but you can't find those easily

@Sp3000 I don't think I will.
@randomra I don't understand...

A list of questions/answers like this: codegolf.stackexchange.com/a/40180/7311

Ah I see. I'm not aware of one. That sounds like an interesting idea.

12:28 PM
Not sure if people will go back on their word/abandon the site by the time someone solves it though :P

12:39 PM
I would make the post somehow like this:

i my question , there s quiet diversity of solutions , case-separated , (x/xy) or(x/x+y) for whichever y>0 is would give 0 , (x+3)/(x+2) is 1 but (x+4)/(x+2) isnt always 1 (case x=0) so cantbe simplified . otherwise it is 1+1/(x+2) in all cases if division is floating , so what about rolling it back to first edit ?

My problem with the arithmetic expressions question is that it's too hard for me, e.g. what's the optimal for x,x,x,x,x,*,*,*,*,x,x,x,*,*,-,x,x,*,+,1,-?

x^5-x^3+x^2-1 = xx*(x*(xx-1)+1)-1
wait
xx*1-x*1+x*x*1-
8 operation
so ...

xx*1-xxx**1+* is shorter

its all about the program
no
there s 9 operations
in ur polynomial

12:49 PM
Wait, what are you counting by again?
Oh, operators

yea operands
prioritised to length

How did you count 9 from that? Just to make sure

wait
ah its six

7 vs 6, so it's still shorter?

yea
:/

12:52 PM
I don't know if that's optimal, but the fact that it's not fully factorised, yet not fully expanded scares me :/

the challenge is doomed to be eternally open for more optimal strategies
i wonder how matlab do it :/
when u type simplify(f)

Can Matlab handle the above case?
What does it give?

vnt tried ur case yet

I'm sure matlab (and mathematica) just try a few known simplifications, but neither give any guarantee of the result being optimal.
@randomra your new proposal should be fun in Retina :)

factor(x^5-x^3+x^2-1)

ans =

(x - 1)*(x^2 - x + 1)*(x + 1)^2
still above 7

1:01 PM
@MartinBüttner "outputs or returns the sum of the following three integers"... "three integers"... mumbles about Fortnightly Challenge
I still have bugs to fix :(

@Sp3000 "the sum"... just make a pattern that matches all three of them and count matches.

@MartinBüttner yeah, and maybe some of the new pattern languages if they can output numbers

... oh actually I don't need to worry about overlapping, since no two can have the same centre point

i still cant understand @randomra's challenge

which one?

1:03 PM
generating a number fom a stack or vice versa ?
stickstack

0
A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

randomraNon-crossing X's and crossing non-X's code-golf string counting You should write a program or function which given a text as input outputs or returns the sum of the following three integers: Number of lowercase x's which are not part of a cross-formation. Number of uppercase X's which are no...

you are supposed to generate stickstack programs, which in turn output the requested number

(aw I don't have backrefs :( )

is it supposed to output , a program wich outputs , one of the cited numbes ?
thats wierdly hard

@AbdouAbdou yes. you write a program (in any language), which is given a number as input. the output of your program is a stickstack program which outputs the requested number (and should be as short as possible).
this is usually called

1:15 PM
lol count me out this , should the fruited code be always Cjam ? or whatever language u want
can you design a program of specified language , which generates a diiferent language code ?

@AbdouAbdou "fruited"?

resulted

the output code should be stickstack. you can use any language you want to generate the stickstack programs.
you don't need to interpret stickstack at all.
the CJam interpreter is only given for people to play around with stickstack and get a feel for it.

2:11 PM
This is probably duplicate but haven't found a similar question.
You have N dices in an infinte-by-K-by-1 transparent box. You see the forward facing side of every dice. After scrambling there will be K dices at the bottom. What is the exact chance that those bottom sides a)will be a given list b)will have a sum of a given number.
Is this too boring?

Ok, I feel like an idiot :D

I don't understand the significance of having N dice or an infinitely tall box.

well, if you get what I tried to say, certainly not

I think I did. Given the forward faces of some dice, find the probabilities of the bottoms matching a) or b). I'm with Martin on the infinity thing, though.

ohh
I completely skipped the sentence about forward facing sides.
maybe scrambling only involves mixing up the positions and rotating the dice such that the front face remains the same?

2:18 PM
@Geobits yes, and there are N dice total but you take only K (random one) for the matching
@MartinBüttner yes, tried to find an image for that, but couldn't

So scrambling is like rolling then?
Well, rolling in one direction... kinda.

if you see face 6, that dice can be 2.3.4 or 5

btw, little nitpick: the singular is technically "die" (although I believe "dice" has become acceptable by now), but the plural is definitely "dice" ;)

I know just don't like the word :P

2:21 PM
ohh, I though die is the plural
so still messed up

off the top of my head I can't think for a better than brute force solution to your problem, so it's probably not boring ;)

As usual, there's an EL&U for this: english.stackexchange.com/q/167104/48331

Gah I was just there!

maybe the whole story just makes it less clear though
but without it the task is pretty arbitrary

PPCG: Fluffing Arbitrary Task Specs

2:24 PM
it description of the scenario could probably use some work (or a nice illustration), but I think it's helpful.

@Geobits I find it strangely comforting that "roll one dice" is still considered unacceptable

@Rainbolt me too, although I don't really have a say in this :P

Me too. Especially since that's how I taught my son ;)

@MartinBüttner I just had this situation occur to me (except the infinite size of the box) so I might put in a picture

Now if only all of the people who say "I'm doing good." could have an untimely death...

2:27 PM
But what if they're out doing good in the community? :P

They could be. And that's why, when they ask how I'm doing, I respond "I'm doing evil."

when you first said "transparent" and "dice" I was wondering whether there would be an interesting challenge of lining up transparent dice, looking through them and doing something with the number of pips you see.

@Rainbolt That seems more a reply to what you're doing, not how.
So, same as the issue you have with them.

Glad you noticed that it highlights the issue
If it sounded normal, I don't think they would understand
I don't think most of them understand anyway, because we're in Texas

If they didn't understand, they'd probably think it was less petty and pedantic :P

2:30 PM
What if I put my pinky up to my mouth when I say it? Would the comic relief lighten the mood enough for it to sound less petty and pedantic?

Possibly. I assume everyone in Texas has seen Austin Powers by now.
Or you could stroke your hairless wrinkled cat.
That requires a bit more prep, though.

Mom told me that when I was around 6 or 7 I sounded like a hick, and they had to coach me out of it by correcting me a hundred times a day on pronunciations

hm, disappointingly there are only 4 possible shapes you could see through those transparent dice:

@MartinBüttner that could be fun too, maximize pip number seen from top given N dice with given top faces and K base where from you can build stacks

. . . . ... ...
 . ... . ...
. . . . ... ...

2:34 PM
What is that last one?

I was rather thinking give the probabilities of these 4 patterns for a given N
@Geobits two 6/1 faces offset by 90 degrees

Ohh, more than one die. Got it.

well, you have to split the dice in half horizontally

Make them d12. I assume there are pipped 12 patterns out there somewhere.

or print the face patterns for a K-sided dice

2:37 PM
Here's a bunch of layouts for a bunch of different numbers: dicecollector.com/MY_PAPER.HTM
Top right is d12

I think if I went for the straightforward probability theory challenge, then doing a simple d6 with four probabilities would be the right difficulty level

what do you mean by four probabilities

given N dice in random orientations, give the probability that you will see one of the four pip patterns above

That sounds like a solid code-golf. It shouldn't be too algorithmically difficult, but there's at least a few different approaches. I like it.
Is my output too obviously wrong? :P

well the first probability is (2/3)^N ... the second and third (5/6)^N and the fourth is 1 minus those... I think that's too simple

2:51 PM
I should really do the math before commenting on things.

I love this guy's profile text:
Tom, Vancouver, Canada
15.8k 3 22 42

maybe something similar with transparent dominos

or larger dice after all
or individual faces
I think with individual faces it could be sufficiently interesting

@Rainbolt I wonder if it's the picture or the text that is out of date

Here's another pic from his profile on UX (which randomly showed up while I was searching his profile text to see where he stole it from): ux.stackexchange.com/users/6517/tom

2:55 PM
maybe he's just a liar.

You guys are quick to jump to conclusions. I like to think he has a beard, but just keeps it somewhere else.

@Geobits That's ridiculous. If you have a beard, you must wear it proudly!

@MartinBüttner with O(n) (or maybe O(1)) time constraint I guess

@BrainSteel Maybe he just wears it at work. Beards are more appropriate in some places than others, depending on the style.

2:59 PM
Beard oppression is a large problem in modern society. Beards should have the freedom to be anywhere without risk of being called "inappropriate."

beard ?

@AbdouAbdou amazingly it is on topic for the room - we're discussing the phrase "have beard, will code"
3

Peer pressure made me star you.

@BrainSteel I'm curious, but not complaining :)

i m just curious how the conversation strangely turned into beard problem

3:03 PM
@BrainSteel Peer pressure is a large problem in....

Peer pressure is also a major factor in beard cycles

I saw 2 stars and was compelled to follow the small crowd. I am a weak man.

@MartinBüttner although it is still just an iterative matrix-multiplication and I think we have a few of those

I'm a fence-straddler. Not clean shaven, but not wild with beard.

I cannot grow anything but the most embarrassing facial hair. I envy your ability to choose.

3:06 PM
Some of us are free to choose between embarrassing facial hair or embarrassing face

My "choice" was restricted for 10 years in the military. So once I got out, the shaving-once-a-day-every-day thing stopped very quickly.

or do you think there is a shorter alternative?

The shorter alternative is called stubble
Wait - maybe beards need a separate room

Is there a Beards.SE?

@trichoplax My beard isn't that big.

3:07 PM
lol
if u asm-code u must have beard

@BrainSteel Not yet...

after two failed challenges , idont think i really understand how it goes here ! besides , i did remarked that matlab isnt currently used in this SE part

What challenges? I don't see any activity on your profile.

@AbdouAbdou I'm not sure if I already mentioned it, but a great way to find out if a challenge would be successful and if it's clear and on topic is to first post it in the sandbox and leave it there for a few days to get feedback.

yes u told me so

3:17 PM
It also helps (most people) to hang out and answer some challenges first. That helps you see how it works better, so your own are better than they would be.

that was another profile , restrained from contribution
some one should propose a metapost , about if a proceeding is taken within a specific SE subgroup , it shouldnt be extended to all the parent website

Wow. I am following the LGBT proposal on Area51, but now I'm having second thoughts about it.
I didn't even know what tucking was. And now that I do, I can't imagine that ever being appropriate for SE

laughing too hard at Ohnana's answer hahaha

3:39 PM
Another idea I thinking about is this:
Find the greatest x that you can connect (0,0) and (0,x) with a given set of tetris pieces. Connection is orthogonal.

Don't all the pieces have a constant maximum height?
It seems like it would just be the sum of those.

hi all

Might be more interesting for (x, y), sum(x,y) maximised, I dunno

we can all try to guess exactly what the question is there too :)
if you need any help.. "(n) - bottomings consist of a mixture of sweets, usually with ice cream. Similar to toppings, but it is on the bottom. "
(from the urban dictionary)

@Geobits you have to stay level so you can't just connect e.g. Z shapes the simple way

3:46 PM
So simple physics balancing also? I assumed it was like the actual tetris game.

with only O I L J T pieces your solution would be right

it seems buggy to me (see my comment)

with 1 Z you can only connect 0,0 and 0,1 but not 0,0 and 0,2

Oh, right.... (0,x), not just x... nvm.

@Sp3000 that would be just the sum of the Manhattan-diagonal of the pieces

3:54 PM
Speaking of stacking tetris pieces, I received this as a gift, but really have nowhere to put it. Fun to play with for a few minutes, then just.... an oddball lamp.

puzzling moderator seems to induce very interesting questions there (wonder why)

@Geobits Is it bright enough to be useful?

Nope. Maybe as a nightlight, but I'm not four.

@Geobits I like to be able to see my keyboard at night. I don't like bright lights, but I don't like lights that are too dim to see my keyboard either.

Ah. It might be enough for that. My keyboard is lit up enough for me by my monitor(s) in most cases, so I don't know for sure.

3:58 PM
Mine is on a roller kind of like this

Yea, I can see where that'd be an issue. It's probably not bright enough, honestly.
It uses bulbs (not LEDs), and they have to keep the voltage way down because the case is used as the contacts for each piece.

Currently I have this ridiculously bright lamp pointed at the ceiling. I'd love a somewhat dim Tetris lamp sitting on the edge of the desk right near my keyboard

Also, if your desk moves/shakes much, it'd probably fall over enough to be aggravating.

Oh it isn't magnetic?

Nope.

4:01 PM
What I really need is one of those old gameboy lights and a way to plug it into my keyboard

Hmm.. look for ereader lights?

I have a the light. Just no way to plug it in

USB plug, wires, splices :P

If I splice it into the keyboard power supply who knows if the keyboard will have enough power to work
keyboard with usb ports

Oh. My keyboard has USB/headphone/audio jacks on it, I didn't mean directly into the power supply.

4:04 PM
I didn't know that was a thing

It's an awesome thing.
Welcome to Puzzling SE! Are you asking for a program to solve this problem? If so, codegolf.stackexchange.com would be a more appropriate place to do it :-) — leoll2 2 hours ago

What kind of question is this (from Visual Studio)? "SomeFile.cs has been changed in an open editor an also on disk. Do you want to not save your changes and replace the file on disk?"

If I'm not saving my changes, why would the file on disk be replaced?
I think they messed up their order of operations there.

not [save my changes and replace the file on disk]
[not save my changes] and [replace the file on disk]

@Rainbolt If I get confused I press ESC

4:14 PM
I make a copy of whatever file it is that I want to keep, then press the button that looks most likely to align my files with source control
But I have no clue on this one

@Rainbolt Right, it makes no sense. if(!save){what do I replace it with?)

Oh, the version in source control

So you have versions in source control, editor, and disk, all different? Bad rainbolt.
I say screw it and overwrite everything with the editor version.

But here's the thing... every other time I have a file open in an editor and forget to press save, and then I get latest version, it just says "You have unsaved changes in file.cs. Would you like to save them before getting latest version?"
And then after that, it says "File.cs has conflicting changes. Please merge." or something like that
And I reconcile the changes (or I give up at that point because they are unreconcilable) and then all is good

Maybe you should look at what's saved on disk in a separate editor and hand-merge or figure out what the difference is.

4:24 PM
@Sp3000 I think you overdid it too soon. Still only 1 ans
:)

:( I even gave a hint on how to beat me!

There we go

4:44 PM
retina and Cjam are taking over all the ground

You forgot Pyth

I only see 14 Retina answers so far. That's nice, but it's hardly "taking over" yet.

Retina is quite a niche language in codegolfing.
except if Martin decides to solve the unsuiting challenge with it :)

Well I think Reticality just broke a few submissions to decimal printing

@PhiNotPi They fixed the bug I was having with screeps.
