A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

Christian IrwanEverything about PI code-golf Pi is the most popular transcedental number. As a result, pi have thoroughly studied. This challenge is in spirit of 9-Hole challenge. 1. Digits of PI Given n and k, output n'th digit before point on base-k representation. 5 10 9 10 2 0 6 16 10 If the base is ...

Great timing @NewSandboxedPosts!

12:32 PM
@wizzwizz4 both jobs are running... I'll check my mailbox... waiting for the SD card for the 2nd cubietruck...

@yeti If we ditch the header file and rename the extra .c file to a .h file, it will compile more doesn't for future compilations as it won't save more time than has been spent running the code so far.

I won't interrupt 'em now
no no no...
:-)
mybe some milliseconds can be gained by loop-unrolling...
but just waiting 2% longer is the cheaper operation
;-)

Yes.
But, if there was a system failure, it would be more efficient to use the .c file as a header instead of the header that refers to the .c file, because then the compiler can use inlining.

or jus make an all-in-one c file with some fat comments about where to split if preferring separate files...

12:49 PM
Yeah, but then some would be mine and some would be somebody else's...

ok... that's a reason...
the "edit" feature has vanished.... i cannot correct my typos any more... straaaanage

So I don't have a massive urge to ask whether it is finished all the time, could you @ping me when it's done?
The edit feature isn't gone, it's just you can only edit for a certain amount of time unless you're a mod.

@wizzwizz4 ping test!

@yeti pong test!

;-)
ok

12:52 PM
Say something

something

@wizzwizz4 ping-pong test!
Too many people chatting. Impossible to do a self-reply w/o edits! :-(

/me is sloooow today... probably migraine-weahther
being able to edit is brutal... in irc I just live with my typos...

How long has it been running? Edit: edited this post

and it is ok that way
the 2nd one has 73min according to top
it was started arount about 10 minutes after the 1st
CPU states: 12.5% user, 0.0% nice, 0.0% system, 0.0% interrupt, 87.5% idle
...on the 8-core box
1 cpu at 99.x% is ~12.5&

12:57 PM
8 cores?!? You can run 8 different processes on that box. If you offset the starting seed by 2^29 each time...

but that'll be unfair on a multi user box
it is not exclusively mine

Ok. 4 processes? ;p jk

I have a 4core-PI
;-)
or 2

I have a Raspberry Pi too.
But it's no good for this sort of thing.

atm only 1 PI and one cubie3 are running... 'm short on big SD cards...
migraine weather ==> more typos ;-(

1:01 PM
Typos ==> more typos

/me wants a way to convert typos into power... a typo power plant!
I invented an alzheimer power plant

S***. The nice people on Code Review just pointed out to me that I made a typo.
In the source code.

what? where?
why? how?
;-)
so I should stop both jobs?

I think so. I'll update the GitHub gist.

ok

1:07 PM
Ok. I've updated the GitHub gist. Now it should actually spit out a value.
My previous version worked, but a computer glitch overwrote it with null bytes. :-( I forgot to test this version.
Actually, there is a 1 / 2^(86) chance of actually generating a seed.
Maybe we shouldn't do this. It could just be a waste of time.

no more header?

mt19937ar is meant to end in .h
Just rename it to fix the problem.

ok..

The only thing this program will prove now is whether or not a Hello, World program actually exists in Seed.

then m*.h includes itself

1:16 PM
It probably won't find one.

mooooment...

m*.h shouldn't include itself anymore. Take out that line. I really haven't been doing this properly...
The chances of a seed program existing are just over 0.00000000000000000000000002

both running

Do you know when overflows occur?

no
which ones?

1:22 PM
Or the approximate speed of calculation?
Because if you know the speed of calculation then you know about when it has overflowed.
And when it is seeding with values it has already checked.

64bit xeon @2.3ghz
thats all I know about the single cores of the 8-core one

Because if the program doesn't find anything, and the chances of it finding anything are slim, it will never stop running.

the other one seems to be single core
/proc is not mounted
:-(
no idea how fast

There's probably no point running the code.

make a super interesting website and embed the search in parts as JS...
mwhuaahahaahahahaa
advertise superkittenporn and millions of visitors give you CPU time

1:29 PM
anyone know why?

because it is boring?
maybe I just didnt see the fun in it

@yeti really???
is that a reason to downvote these days?
(and it's not boring!)

but i didnt vote at all

unless you think math is boring of course

I dont like calculating

1:33 PM
@yeti Actually, I am planning to create a website... I've had this idea hundreds of times before, but never actually when I'm creating a website. I think I'll build some calculation code into the core JS framework so that when the framework gets complicated, it will be impossible to extract and remove the calculation code. Mwahahaha.

but jumping arround the numbers to construct divisors or primes is fun
or thinking about integers as multidimensional tuples where each "dimension" is a prime and the coordinate is how often that factor is in that number...
or unrolling euratosthenes...
no... definitely I do like maths... but maybe just other parts of her

@yeti fair enough.. as a simple coding exercise I also think it has possibility for golfing
you basically have to make a histogram of all the possible values of Mx

HEy um here
hi
@wizzwizz4 hi

I am shocked by the downvotes :(

@BlockCoder1392 Hi. You've got a mask, I have a beard. But they're both hats. (?!?)

1:38 PM
/me thinks downvotes should be done visibly and need a comment

me too

anonymous downvotes are a design flaw

@yeti /me is IRC only.

everyone unterstands /me

/me doesn't.

1:39 PM

I just came up with a DOS compliant series of characters that looks like a person without tilting your head!

@AlexA. you shouldn't be holding down j anyway
@FlagAsSpam because I own the account and I made it edit two things so it could get the "post on meta" privilege

Hello

1:43 PM
Heyy

@BlockCoder1392 That website had an invalid certificate.

that wasn't an https link

Oh. I was temporarily intercepted then.

my main problem is how to paste in the math from the wiki page

@wizzwizz4 Fixed; it was HTTP instead of HTTPS

1:48 PM
It's not meant to be HTTPS I don't think.
Whenever I've used it before it's been HTTP.

[the website] was http not https

Yes.

Q: Write the new VIM

tourdetourWrite a text editor You have to write a Text Editor program that allows : Reading a given file Modifying the file Creating a new file Saving a file anywhere on the disk and choosing it's name The shortest program in bytes wins but fancy features are appreciated.

Q: Cracking the Enigma?

AdnanIntroduction The Enigma was one of the first electro-mechanical rotor cipher machines used in World War II. That means that after a single letter is coded, it would change the key for the next letter. This was considered unbreakable by the Germans, due to the enormous key space. Even brute-forci...

3:33 PM
Well, I just beat java.

you should be proud

I beat java at something non-trivial using BotEngine.
Probably the most d instructions I've ever used in one BotEngine program.
(Actually, after some further revisions, it scores a full eighteen orders of magnitude better than java- and only five orders of magnitude worse than C++)
Of course, the winning answer still outperforms it by sixty-four orders of magnitude.

3:53 PM
+1

@AlexA. That account is older than the "real" Maltysen too

4:06 PM
@quartata Thank you for editing my name :)

@Adnan :P

4:40 PM
@El'endiaStarman I updated the paper with a better explanation, and a page-long proof of the linear best case

Should we use the fancy chat event scheduling tool to schedule a (UTC) New Year's party? :P

@Doorknob冰 am I invited? :3
Suddenly I don't feel like a no-life hue hue
except it isn't actually a party
@NewMainPosts You know what bothers me about this?
The person has an account on SO with 480 rep
And they still posted it here
...

4:56 PM
I'm guessing in this case they simply posted to the wrong site accidentally, rather than thinking this was an appropriate place. Most people will realise they are on a different SE site after following HNQ links, but every so often we'll get someone who doesn't, with no ill intention.

I suppose.
Maybe we need a blinking red marquee that says THIS ISN'T STACKOVERFLOW on the top of the ask question page

I don't think we need to make anything any clearer - it happens rarely enough that the current presentation seems sufficient
@quartata lol - annoy 999 people in the hope that the 1 mistaken user will be dissuaded from posting ;)

@trichoplax :P

Alternatively, we blackmail someone from SE into graduating us so that we get a design

@Doorknob冰 I hear that Chris can be easily bribed with Mountain Dew

4:59 PM
I feel an evil laugh coming on...

mwahuehuehue

How long do we need to maintain 10 questions per day in order to graduate?
