I knew it sounded familiar, but Google failed me ><

How do I say something is a sequence of a time series? Like, I have a vector v(2,5,7,4,6), how can I explain the elements are successive measurements?

Showing an example graph would do the trick for sure.

Understood

PS: Can anyone recommend an online interpreter for perl? (Where you could pass arguments on call.)

3:12 PM
I've been looking all over for a good one, haven't really found one...
ideone has Perl support but you can't specify command line arguments which really sucks

@Geobits The query manhattan addition -city -school -dog -crossword -office -image -forum -leasing -schultz -neratoff -beer -eaton -beach -thrilled -library -"construction projects" has his post on the second page at the bottom. I don't blame you.

@quartata I am trying to run this submission.

@SvenTheSurfer Needs more specificity. First page or it doesn't count :P

I tried!
The post kept getting eaten up by things like -drug

Yea, you should never subtract drugs, only add them.

3:16 PM
Ahh silly me.

@flawr I think you can put in use 5.10.0; at the beginning and then hard-code the number

So wait, is Dyalog APL considered to be a different dialect from traditional APL?

@feersum Thanks, it works!

(:
In some areas, there are APL interpreters only 20 miles apart whose codes are mutually unintelligible.

3:23 PM
@quartata Yes, it adds new syntax stolen from J, among other things.

o.O Stack Cats is a palindrome... how has @Calvin'sHobbies not yet made a challenge about that?

I think the key word in that sentence is "yet".

pet stack cat step?

You could also stab bats.

I'm still waiting for the one about a llama mall
hi fives feersum

3:31 PM
:D
there's also the good ol' Taco Cat

Do geese see God?

@Geobits Why wouldn't they?

Well I never have. What makes geese so special? @AlexA.?

@AlexA. Do they?

Put use 5.10.0;$n=10;say"| "x$_,"+","-"x(16*$n-4*$_+13),"+"," |"x$_ for 0..4*$n+3;$p="| "x(3*$n+2);say"$p+ | ","| "x2x$n,"+ $p|";$p=~s/..//,$q="-"x(4*$_-1),say"$p+$q+ ","| "x(2*$n-2*$_+1),"+$q+ $p|"for 1..$n;$p=~s/..//;say$p,("+---"."-"x4x$n)x2,"+ $p|";$p=~s/..//,$q="-"x(4*$n+3)."-"x4x$_,say"$p+$q+ | ","| "x2x($n-abs$_),"+$q+ $p|"for-$n..$n;say" "x(8*$n+6),"+----$q+"` into [this.](http://www.tutorialspoint.com/execute_perl_online.php) Press `execute` and enjoy.

Even if you do not like drugs.

3:33 PM
that went really well
pastebin?
ideone link?

Oh, it seems chat.SE does not like pearl.

@flawr no, markdown doesn't work in multiline messages

But it was just one line?

(except block indenting or quoting the entire thing)

Have you guys heard about the brotli extension thing?

3:35 PM
@flawr "Even if you do not like drugs" seems to be in the same messages.

Wow, nice labyrinth. Will keep minotaur entertained for a while.

@Zgarb I see
I mostly was interested in Dyalog since Alex said that certain character combinations would turn into the symbols in its editor.
I want to learn APL but I'm just annoyed by the symbols really

They can't be much different than the alphabet. Either you'll get used to them, or go insane trying.

I just point and click at tryapl.org, it's annoying but works.

3:41 PM
@SvenTheSurfer That's not the problem. Typing them is the problem
@Zgarb This is probably what I'll do

Get a dedicated APL keyboard

@quartata If you only use APL for golfing like I do, you won't have to write anything too long either. :P

Right now I'm just trying to make this string printer I thought of in APL
I might try to golf in it though

Y u no just use alt codes

Alt codes are fine — for one or two symbols. For a few dozen, it's difficult to remember them all quicker than just clicking.

3:45 PM
String processing in APL is a pain.

Wait Dyalog is shareware
Ewwwww

Can you guys help me improving this challenge?
Anything is welcome

1) Is there a reason input needs to be in that exact form? 2) When I said add a graph, I meant one that represented the example inputs, so people could easily see the relationship between them.

1) No particular reason, but I dont know how to specify it, I've got some problems with not specifying it on the Area of Triangle challenge
2) Shame on me, that is really better.

3:54 PM
For most challenges, a good default is "a reasonable format" which might be a separated string, a native array or list, or even separate arguments. This way it's up to the user/language, and they can choose which would be best for the task.
That way you also don't have to be overly specific ;)

I will use that, thank you!
changed the graphs and the input default

So... I've decided not to start learning TSQL today. o-o Calculus beckons.

Uh. Wut?

@randomra Nice work :)

4:04 PM
@Sp3000 thanks

Just posted a comment

@Sp3000 ah, I had no faith in equal

Basically if you did the maths (or random guessing) to find the char you needed to get the right number, then that's fine :)
btw I was going to put r in there for extra fun, but I thought it'd be interesting enough as is :)

Q: Naming non-cyclic carbon chains

Peter Lenkefi(I'm not a chemist! I might be wrong at some stuff, I'm writing that I've learned in high-school) Carbon atoms have a special attribute: They can bind to 4 other atoms (which is not that special) and they stay stable even in long chains. Because they can be chained, we need some kind of naming c...

Q: Calculate Standard Deviation

Beta DecayChallenge Given a set of numbers, calculate the standard deviation of the set. Use the following equation to calculate standard deviation: Input The input will be a string: a list of numbers separated by commas. For example: 56,54,89,87 The numbers will always be integers. Input will be...

@BetaDecay "The output will be a number rounded to a precision of three decimal points" so do you actually want us to output a string with exactly three decimal places? or can the output be a number as long as it's correct to 3 decimal places? also 3 decimal places is a pretty tough requirement if there is no input range. 5 significant digits might be fairer.

Std dev is one of the operations here, fyi:

yeah I found that too

It's old and contains other things, but just throwing it out there.

convinces me more and more that "multiple unrelated tasks in a single challenge" is a bad idea

5:21 PM
Yep

although to be fair that one isn't too bad. it's probably possible to reuse some code between the tasks
implementing several related things in a single program can be interesting, because some shared computations might allow for additional golfitude.
e.g. this codegolf.stackexchange.com/q/37217/8478 (ignoring the fact that it's then also wrapped in rosetta code)

Sure. It just then sucks when the single-task challenge comes later :/

@BetaDecay Without the weirdly strict I/O requirements, this would have been catalogue material.

I think this one's probably ok though.

Is « part of ASCII?
Wait, nope, it isn't. Crap.

5:33 PM
might be in some extended ASCII set
yeah it has character code 171, so it's in ISO 8859-1

Hmm... it's a script character, though, so... crap. It was going to be one of my series of AppleScript answers in the Cops & Robbers thing.

Q: What happens when this SE site graduates?

LuminousEarlier this summer there was a grape in the vine saying this site was going to graduate this Fall and it dawned on me now. What does that even mean? That makes me so happy :)

@MartinBüttner Hmm strict? What would a relaxed I/O be? :|

For most challenges, a good default is "a reasonable format" which might be a separated string, a native array or list, or even separate arguments. This way it's up to the user/language, and they can choose which would be best for the task.

I see. Is it too late to change the input and output format now?

When you say a set of numbers, do you mean non-repeating?
> Given a set of numbers, calculate the standard deviation of the set.
@BetaDecay To relax it a bit? I would say no.

Nope, the numbers can repeat

more like a list of numbers

5:57 PM
I've changed the rules now

do we now need to calculate mean instead of standard deviation?

It's still the standard deviation...

do we now get a set of strings as input?

You can if you wish
But you aren't limited to that

Is there a bonus if I always output -15?
I feel like there should be

6:02 PM
If the input is Beta,Decay, there's a -10% bonus

boo. I wanted a -15% bonus

Alright
-15 bytes bonus

@Geobits Yay, I think I am gonna set up a dating website for people who want to see horrible accidents as their live goals.
3

Can't be too generous ;)

Can I take input as a single number representing the std dev of the list?

6:04 PM
where is the list then?
your input is the single number. its a cat now

Well yea. I thought that would be the most convenient format.

@Geobits I can't tell if that's a glaring loophole or just you being persnickety...

It's definitely not the latter...

If you post that, I'll give you an upvote for sure

@flawr you's gonna get some really bad people signing up in that one ... :P

6:09 PM
@Optimizer Are you going to sign up too?

Haha unfortunate caret ;)

@BetaDecay You might want to delete your outdated comments on the main post

6:12 PM
@Optimizer As someone who's scraped dead bird off planes, I have to disagree ;)

Oh Jesus

@Geobits won't be the first time

@Sp3000 Done

I hope you gave my people a proper burial.

"people" ?
birds are people too?

6:13 PM
Yes

@AlexA. Probably not. If they went through an engine it's mostly just blood and feathers left :/

So you can choose [x] plane crashs, [x] crashes involving animals, [x] crashes of race cars, [x] crashes resulting in severe injury, [x] crashes with fire, [x] crashes with explosions, etc

So all of those are checked for you? :P

Q: Code to print multiples of 3, multiples of 5, and multiples of 3 & 5 between 1-100

Aniruddha BeraCode to print multiples of 3, multiples of 5, and multiples of 3 & 5 between 1-100. Print "Buzz" if it's a multiple of 3. Print "Fizz" if it's a multiple of 5. Print "BuzzFizz" if it's a multiple of 3 & 5. Shortest code please. Programming language not an issue.

No. No. NO.

"and multiple of 3 and 5" ?

@Geobits That reminds me of a story that my driver's ed teacher told us. It was part of a lesson to never endanger human life for the sake of an animal. He mentioned that he was once on a drive with a couple of students. He was in the front passenger seat, a student was driving, and there was a student in the back. There was a goose in the road and the guy said, "Hit it." The student was like, "No!" and the just said, "Hit it." The student went white-knuckled gripping the steering wheel.

the first two will cover them too

6:17 PM
The student in the back screamed because there were feathers and blood stuck to the car.
Also this, @Geobits:
Note that if the person from which you heard we'll be graduating in the fall was named Geobits, it is not true. — Alex A. ♦ 11 mins ago

Do we have a fizzbuzz question already, or is this the first.

We have at least one, I think more.

@AlexA. yes, only my info regarding graduation is correct

We have the catalog, mirage and reverse solver to name three fizzbuzzes

BuzzFizz? What is this, Alternate Evil Mirror Dimension world?

What? No...
This is Patrick.
Is this the Krusty Krab?
No, this is Patrick.

It's not very nice of you to call me a liar (╯︵╰,)

awww
its so cute

I never said you were a liar, I just said that any information you provide regarding graduation is false.
There's a difference, however slight.

Shortest code to produce a paradox

@BetaDecay Please make a note in your challenge for informing people about the difference between the sample standard deviation and the population standard deviation.

^

^

6:24 PM
After up up comes down down, not left.

I'm the bauss

bauss?

Sigma denotes the unknown population standard deviation, which is not equal to the square root of the sum of (x_i - mu)^2 / N. That's the sample standard deviation, denoted sigma hat or s. @BetaDecay
Also the sample standard deviation usually uses N-1 as the denominator

And the subsample standard deviation has N-2 as a denominator.

@AlexA. So, if I understand what you're saying, the equation I give shoudl use sigma instead?

6:30 PM
Well, the population standard deviation is an unknown quantity.
It's estimated by the formula you listed

...you've lost me now :P

BUT WHAT IF YOUR ESTIMATE IS CORRECT?

It's still an estimate

@flawr Investment banks hire you

@BetaDecay Just note that there are two different things that people mean when refering to the 'standard deviation'.

6:32 PM
@BetaDecay What Geobits said regarding input. Regarding output, see the message I sent you earlier.

The difference is that some mean the formula you have there, and other mean basically the same but with an N-1 instead of an N. Many builtins use the N-1 and not the one you wanted.

holy sh*t. Just saw two kangaroos fight like normal humans and then one chocking the other to death. twitter is getting weird.

@BetaDecay Say you're trying to determine how much people's heights vary. You obviously can't measure the height of every living person, so you take a representative sample of people whose heights you can measure. You calculate the standard deviation of their heights and that's your sample standard deviation. That's an estimate of the population standard deviation, which is a fixed, unknown quantity.
Does that make sense?

@Optimizer When I read this I thought you're looking out of your window.

@flawr i am not an Australian

6:34 PM
@AlexA. Ah yeah I get it

Some zoo llamas could probably see kangaraoos.

@Geobits there is no window then

The zoo is like llama prison.

Some zoos have windows.

Some zoos have llamas.
Some zoos have both!

6:36 PM
Does anyone of you know the 'scorpions'?

Of course!

Yea, I do.

@flawr the pair who lives next door?

I've never seen a llama in a zoo... I've only ever seen llamas in fields in cold, damp Welsh valleys

@Optimizer I do not think there are scorpions next door.

6:38 PM
There may be next door to me. I haven't checked.

@flawr you live in the same zoo too?

@Optimizer You mean in the same zoo as geobits?

Geobits does not live in a zoo.

Heh. I just posted an answer in AppleScript that's less than or equal to 2 bytes. Mind. Blown.

Yay for brute forcing a crack! :D

6:39 PM
@VTCAKAVSMoACE Links?

Geobits do not live in zoos.

Geobits is singular.

Geobits are singular
individually

Ugh. I wish there was a way to prevent brute forcing.

The problem with a non-OSX interpreter for AppleScript is that AppleScript's most typical purpose is to automate system events.
For example, I change my system volume as a logarithmic fade with an AppleScript tied to one of my keys.

@flawr I keep thinking about that one.
I'll take a crack at it after I go to a sorta job fair this afternoon/evening.

I'm really sad I couldn't do my other 2 byte answer. :c It's much better, but involves non-ASCII.

I have no idea how to answer him

Tesla just enabled 60k cars to drive themselves, via an OTA update. This is awesome.

You can say absolute area.

@Geobits You can read that comment in two ways. There are now 60 thousands cars that can drive themselves, or there are cars that cost 60 thousand that can now drive themselves.
