I have been learning more about measuring complexity of neural networks, should I edit everything into my existing answer, or should I make a new answer? In particular, if I learnt some other techniques other than VC-dimension, that I think are worse but still of interest, should I create a separate answer or expand my existing one? What is the general protocol and such things? or is it upto me as the answer-giver?

12:28 AM
Is the new answer only about VC dimension?
@ArtemKaznatcheev Anything that fits under that umbrella should probably stay with that existing answer, anything with a new slant can be given its own

@jonsca that is what I was thinking as well. Thanks!

@ArtemKaznatcheev No prob.

Q: Reflections on April 26th 2012 Beta site closures

Jeromy AnglimThere has been a round of recent site closures. Astronomy Economics Literature Firearms Healthcare IT Theoretical Physics Astronomy and Theoretical Physics might be preserved by rolling content into Physics.SE. Perhaps just a personal opinion, but Firearms and Healthcare IT sound fairly niche...

2:23 AM
@jonsca any thoughts on this site closure thing? I didn't realize you were an HIT mod...or a mod at all

Q: Neuroinformatics and cognitive sciences?

Chuck SherringtonI'm asking this in light of the Beta site closure announcements question, but I don't want to steal its thunder. Realizing that we share at least some of the subject matter in common with the proposal for http://area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/38069/neuroinformatics, would it make sense to ab...

@BenBrocka Yeah, I just tapped out some thoughts. I knew it was coming for HIT (I kept waiting for the site to be shut when I got there), but seeing it's company (TP, Lit, etc) was a bit scary
We HIT mods are like ninjas, hiding in the trees of SE
As an added bonus I added that extra Meta question about neuroinformatics, I figure we could use all the help we can get

I didn't even know we had Firearms or HIT

The core of my answer on Jeromy's question is that we need to employ the Reddit machine more. I know everyone disdains it a bit, but it's a great resource for linking
Yeah, HIT was just starting to shape up a bit, too. There's a ton of standards out there and people are starting to wade through them
The top users asked all they had to ask in the beginning and took off, though

I'm afraid it means Science related proposals (that aren't CS or Math) are at risk....

Yes, I was thinking they were trying to thin down their science emphasis and make everything more techy in the long run

2:49 AM
I think long-run that's the opposite of what they hope to do...which is why I'm a bit puzzled
sounds like they're trying to revamp the a51 process to help along sites that don't have lots of current SE users
you can see some discussion about it in the TL
(or ask Shog about it direct)

Yeah, I've seen some of the "new" Area 51 discussion
So, I get what you mean. It was just strange to see TP and astronomy collapse, as I see those as part of the Physics "family"
HIT was bound to go at some point, so I don't correlate it being "healthcare" to any particular pattern

Guys... TP.SE and Ling.SE have nearly identical stats... what's up with that?

Hey @ArtemKaznatcheev
I didn't compare those two side by side, I looked at all of the other stats pretty closely, though

look at those two side by side: TP.SE and Ling.SE
Someone who has a meta account, should point that out on Piotr's question: meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/130361/…
I already contacted him about it on G+

:436410 weird...but Shog did say that TP was closed now because of the option to move the good parts to Physics which is healthy

2:56 AM
linguistics is newer by a couple of months, right? Seems to me there we some sort of weighting based on time in beta

Physics.SE is a giant joke
no
ling is older by a day

@jonsca it's older by one day actually
@ArtemKaznatcheev I don't actually use it, but it seems to be doing okay

@BenBrocka Take a look at the best-rated questions all of them are a joke... complete pop-sci physics.

Shog's point about effort required to answer concerns me as well

of course it has heavy traffic, since pop-sci physics is huge on the internet
potentially bigger than pop-sci brain-stuff

2:58 AM
@ArtemKaznatcheev to be expected, they're not recommendations/closed questions though, so I don't see a big problem with it

@BenBrocka it makes the site useless for people who actually do physics

I don't see how it makes it useless. SO wouldn't be useless for Java developers just because C# questions are more popular

Everyone needs some pop-sci. I hate it, most other people hate it, but it's a drawing card and selling out just a teensy bit would do wonders for our site (don't quote me on that, I'll regret saying this in 5...4...3....2....)

Just because TP and physics both have physics in their name... doesn't mean the communities have any overlap

@ArtemKaznatcheev according to shog they had pretty significant overlap

3:01 AM
because shog9 is an active participant in TP.SE and physics.SE?

lol

anyways, sorry... had to rage for a second... maybe I should make a meta account just so I can rage easier

Because Shog9 watches the beta sites and presumably has access to the direct data

Yeah, I think the staff tends to make highly uninformed decisions in these matters
@BenBrocka But would he know the subject matter?

Oh wait! I realized I have an account on TP.SE.... I can rage on their meta!

3:05 AM
@ArtemKaznatcheev just make an MSO account, you can't not have an MSO account and participate in the general SE network :P
@jonsca Don't know, but they must have had some reason they even let TP go this far, and it's numbers aren't great with a successful site that basically completely overlaps it in potential scope

@BenBrocka thanks for commenting on MSO for me!

Yeah, but HIT went like a week and a half without any, and I mean any, questions in January and nothing was said or done. Now, it starts to pick up and they kill it? The patterns seem haphazard, but perhaps with other data it would make sense.
(I still have leftover grief from the Machine Learning fiasco, so forgive my cynicism)

I'm not all that familiar with how Betas tend to go honestly...my first beta was UX which had been pretty close to launch for a looong time
I don't really care so much about the drama as helping this site grow and find it's purpose though

3:22 AM
@jonsca I was so confused by ML.SE being closed

What happened there?

it was just closed without leaving private beta... although it seemed to be perfectly healthy (at least to my naive eyes)
All the beta questions got merged into stats.SE... where they seem to have gotten almost no attention

Oh...how many questions/users? Low votes/answers?

(all my rep on stats.SE for instance, comes mostly from the few questions I asked on ML.SE and got upvoted there and the upvotes carried over during merger into stats)

Sorry, I jumped away for a second
I wasn't that confused by it, just annoyed
There was a vocal majority from stats.SE that was whining that they had the monopoly on machine learning and no one could have it

3:29 AM
@jonsca except they treat ML questions so badly! arggggg

The truth is, it's a medium to medium-low traffic tag on their site
Yes, and everyone knows that
And not all ML is stats, there's plenty of engineering to it
So I think they wanted to allay the stats folks (as I think a lot of effort went into bolstering stats.SE in its infancy) but wanted to give it a "chance" so they send CHAOS who plants a "This site is closing in a week" sign right in the beginning of private beta. Surprise, surprise, it failed
(I guess there were no dead Apple executives to celebrate that week)
tongue firmly in cheek

@Ben: absolutely - any site that looks like that should be realizing that they have some serious work to do. The primary difference when looking at the two was that Ling was extremely small and has slowly been getting bigger, while Theoretical Physics got off to a reasonably good start and has been trending down ever since (I'm generalizing a bit here, since it depends on what you look at - but there's a reasonable hope that Linguistics is digging its way out after a rocky start). — Shog9 13 mins ago

@BenBrocka yeah, I saw that message
thanks for asking for me :D
I also asked on the TP.SE meta

Jeromy thinks we should be most concerned about the Econ closure

yes, I saw
I agree.
I sort of high-jacked this chat-room to whine about TP.SE being closed. Sorry about that!

3:37 AM
Yeah, he doesn't care about HIT either ;)

@BenBrocka As I said in my answer, I think we should focus on community

Yes, but cheap advertising is also necessary

@jonsca I've tried advertising to the folks I work with, and gotten only 2 questions, and 5 answers out of them

Not too shabby
It doesn't sound like a lot, but it's a lot
Was one of them the "Brain fog" answer? Hehe

nope, that answer doesn't look particularly good

3:44 AM
No, I wish we could delete it. The question was improved and now that crap answer is still there

goes to read more closely to see if it merits a downvote

but it is an answer

You can flag answers like that for [citation-needed] mod post notices

hmm, I don't like the question too much (as in, I did not give it an up-vote, but also did not down-vote), still. I think it is very broad, and the OP should consider asking some build up questions.

@Ben Good to know
Oh, it's not perfect, I know....
There, I flagged it and offered a bribe

3:49 AM
@jonsca umm, it doesn't make any sense....
The first few sentences might be true... but the last sentence is most likely totally false...
without a citation the answer is completely meaningless since it looks like random guessing.

Oh, nonono I meant the question is not perfect. I know the answer is garbage.
*just a minute, my brain needs to belch, it's full
I was answering " the OP should consider asking some build up questions." and then I commented that I was flagging the answer, it all became one thought hehe

Nootropics

Proposed Q&A site for current science and research for cognitive enhancers. Measured and objective discussion of mechanisms of action and effects.

Currently in definition.

should we suggest this as a part of Cog Sci? It's super tiny but the only cog sci related proposal I saw in A51
aside from the neuroimaging one

I'd say nay.
I think it's a bit of "how do I justify my use of illegal substances"
If they renamed it pharmacology, maybe, but I don't know if that's the slant. Plus, then we'd have to fight bio for it

4:05 AM
The actual questions all seem on topic for cog sci
even if the description sounds dodgy

Poke around reddit.com/r/Nootropics for 5 minutes and you'll see what I mean

This is a weird one, but sleep has major cog sci aspects
27
Sleeping

Proposed Q&A site for sleeping enthusiasts about sleeping patterns, power napping, sleeping positions, waking up, dreaming, etc.

Currently in commitment.

I could see that one fitting much better
As long as people kept the dreaming questions on Planet Earth

wow, 300 people and 6% commitment score
332
Roblox

Proposed Q&A site for users of the Roblox MMOG, who need help with scripting or building. Not for the consumers of its many games, but for their creators.

Currently in commitment.

(not suggesting a merge, just thought that was funny)

COGSCI, the MMORPG
Too bad NLP was canned outright, we could have incorporated that easily

4:16 AM
As in neurolinguistic programming?

No, Natural Language Processing
It was most of the way through commitment and they shut it down

ah
between Ling and this site it doesn't seem like it'd have legs on it's own

I rather liked this comment:
Look at Stack Overflow. There's everything from questions about complex enterprise systems to basic hello-world to obscure languages to even homework, all under one successful site. I don't think that it's unreasonable to have doctoral research and high school homework on the same physics site. To say must be separated is elitist. — nhinkle 11 hours ago
BTW, sounds like Theoretical PHysics might be completely migrated to Physics (barring crap closed questions presumably)
