Folks, how to expand $(1+2)^3$ without evaluating the final result? I want to treat 1 and 2 as if they are variables.
Invoking Expand[(1 + x)^3] /. x -> 2 produces 27 rather than 1+3 2+3 2^2+2^3.
Using spaces for multiplication is fine.

@WhoSaveMeSaveEntireWorld Some ways that come to mind:
Expand[(HoldForm[1] + HoldForm[2])^3]
Expand[(x + y)^3] /. {x -> HoldForm[1], y -> HoldForm[2]}
Expand[("1" + "2")^3]
