@rm-rf When you are around again, could you unfreeze the plugin-room and maybe ping @Szabolcs for me? He sent me a bug yesterday and I think I fixed it, but I have some general questions concerning the highlighting/tracking of local variables I want to share with you both.
Nevermind, I actually just figured it out. It's just sort of... indirect, and used functions I wasn't familiar with. From what I understand, he mapped all of the points he's not interested in to {0,0}.
@OleksandrR. oh come on, he went off the deep end around the time "rule 30" was discovered, that look in his eyes whenever he brought it up in that Ted talk man... speaking as a person who often has that look in their eyes, dead giveaway :P
@MickLH you might be right; I didn't see the TED talk! I suppose in a perverse way it does make sense on some level that Wolfram Research researches Wolfram Science. If not then what justifies the company name? And I suppose just Wolfram would be too confusing...
Does anyone know of a contact with the wolfram people where I can cut some kind of deal with them? Something along the lines of "You can spy on my research if you give me free 9?" or even something like "I'll contribute at least X significant optimizations or features in exchange for free 9" lol
I don't get the impression that their hiring process could handle that. A few weeks ago I did two interviews with them and submitted a sample project. The hiring manager said I made it to the final interview, but then I think they forgot about me. They also forgot about my first interview on the scheduled date, so my impressions of the hiring process and my impressions of the feature set from 6 years ago haven't been very similar.
@Mr.Wizard I saw in the list of recently deleted questions at least five that were marked as duplicate. It was my understanding that policy was not to deleted those, and leave them as a signpost. Has this policy been changed?
Do you hate the guys trying to optimize every single part of a process? I'm one of those. Believe me, it's even harder for me. When I sit next to someone watching him writing something, taking the hand off the keyboard to mark a portion of text with the mouse, make a right-click just to copy&past...
Hm, I actually have no idea how competitive it is. I haven't met another Mathematica user in person, and I get the impression the company is growing well, but I wouldn't be able to guess revenue. I have a friend from Microsoft who interviewed with them back in the mid-late 2000s. He said it seemed interesting, but so did Microsoft at the time and Microsoft was paying more. For me they said they could at least match my Microsoft pay, so that's a good sign I think.
I just did the normal application on the website. I sent a bunch of Mathematica code I'd written, but I'd start out doing C# coding, so I'm not sure how relevant that was.
The interview seemed pretty normal. I really believe that putting consistently-designed implementations of lots of high-level algorithms into a language is the best way to accelerate algorithm innovation, and I think I got that across. They've managed to keep their feature set well ahead of the curve, which is a nice luxury for them to have as a company.
Like I said, though, I haven't gotten a paycheck yet, so take my advice with a grain of salt.
Some solutions to homework problems for an online bioinformatics course, an independent bioinformatics project I did, a browser for Wikipedia traffic/categories, a bot that scrapes film infobox data from Wikipedia for Wikidata, an app that helps me meet my daily nutrition requirements, a stock screener I used for some trading, and two small, fun samples for generating sentences that contain every phoneme and for viewing historical temperature trends in cities.
@Pillsy No problem. One last tip: when you search, you should try rather to use google with an additional site:mathematica.stackexchange.com because it seems that works a lot better.
@SjoerdC.deVries No, the policy has not changed, at least not mine, which is: keep questions that are likely to be found in a search when the original is not or which have unique answers, but delete ones that are just clutter. Of course that is subjective but I try my best. Usually rm -rf does most the deletions, but he's taking a short break so I'm trying to do a bit more now. If any specific deletions concern you please notify me.
@halirutan Sooner or later we're going to end up eating Wolfram Pancakes; just wait and see. :o)
