@ssch That seems like a good reason to start the National Climatic Data Center package on Wikicode. I'll get started on it.

4:30 AM
Is someone around with M9.0.1, Windows XP 32 bit who wants to try something?
(A Visual Studio (or any other C compiler) should be installed for LibraryLink)

Hi all, i'm currently trying to use RegionPlot3D, but i got a strange error:
RegionPlot3D[
Evaluate[A[[9]] /. NormPars /. SetparsNoIn /.
Krev -> 10^x /. Kdir -> 10^y /. He -> 10^z /. Ptot -> 10^-6]
, {x, 3, 6}, {y, 3, 6}, {z, -14, -3},
]
it tells me that
RegionPlot3D::boolf: 17.4255>1.61243*10^10 10^z&&379.243>2.34174*10^10 10^z&&6.58454*10^-8 10^y>60.9284 10^(x+z)&&73549.3 10^z>0.000202429&&73549.3 10^z>1.92329*10^7 10^z&&1528.55 10^z>0.000277919 10^(x+z) must be a Boolean function. >>
I cannot understand why this is not a boolean function

11:20 AM
@Yyrkoon you do something else wrong, because here it works. Which Mathematica version do you have and on which system are you working?

@halirutan I'm using Mathematica 9, on Windows 8 64bit

@Yyrkoon Taking the expression from your error message and putting it back to RegionPlot3D does not give a message here:
RegionPlot3D[
 17.4255 > 1.61243*10^10 10^z && 379.243 > 2.34174*10^10 10^z &&
  6.58454*10^-8 10^y > 60.9284 10^(x + z) &&
  73549.3 10^z > 0.000202429 && 73549.3 10^z > 1.92329*10^7 10^z &&
  1528.55 10^z > 0.000277919 10^(x + z), {x, 3, 6}, {y, 3,
  6}, {z, -14, -3}]
Although it doesn't show something either.

It's possibly the fact that my A has also a tooltip inside?
I've attached to every elements of A a tooltip to show

11:37 AM
@Yyrkoon When you try to remove it, does it work then?

HelloAll, does anyone know if there is any simple way to use OptionsPattern as in f[opts:OptionsPattern[]] if f has attribute HoldAll (or similar)?

@halirutan Yes, thank you!! It seems that the problem was that one, do you know if it's possible to create tooltips in 3D in some way?

@Yyrkoon Yes, but not in the input data. You have to tooltip the graphics.
Graphics3D[{Tooltip[Sphere[], "Oh my good, a sphere"]}]

g' morning (or whatever) all

@belisarius Morning.

11:46 AM
@halirutan Hi!
@halirutan The GM script stopped working here. Is it me?

@belisarius g' afternoon

@IstvánZachar :)

@belisarius What is the GM script?

Q: Additional useful buttons for our M.SE editor

halirutanDo you hate the guys trying to optimize every single part of a process? I'm one of those. Believe me, it's even harder for me. When I sit next to someone watching him writing something, taking the hand off the keyboard to mark a portion of text with the mouse, make a right-click just to copy&past...

@belisarius Oh.. Nope, still working here.

11:56 AM
@halirutan Thank you very much for your help :)

@halirutan Ok. It must be my damn FF beta

@Yyrkoon No problem.

12:22 PM
@m_goldberg oh my, rather many bad questions today.

12:33 PM
Hoping to hear something interesting from the conference today... :I

@kirma looking forward to that, too.
@RHall should be there and promised blogging/tweeting

12:50 PM
hmmmh.

@kirma hmmm?

@YvesKlett Didn't know of such an organized plan here. :)

@kirma gotta visit Meta more often :-)

@YvesKlett ... or actually read the stuff there.

@kirma true
Some subpar questions today, no?

12:57 PM
@YvesKlett I haven't really been reading SE for couple days. Instead, reading OpenCL standard on weekend, working today...
Reading OpenCL standard is great cure to insomnia. :)

1:39 PM
@MichaelHale Sounds good! I made an ISD import format: pastie.org/8418669

1:54 PM
This is the part I don't really like that much:

@rm-rf any good advice on this one:

It seems the OP takes downvotes personally.

2:54 PM
@YvesKlett btw, you could possibly try using Predictions`Private`URLStringQ in your answer... www.google.com is a valid url too :)

@rm-rf just curious - did you delete a comment of mine or did I do that?

@YvesKlett I did
It wasn't going anywhere, so I had to stop it :)

that was why I asked for best practice firsthand :-)

hehe

@rm-rf isn´t there some kind of handbook on things like this?

3:01 PM
@YvesKlett lol, no

perhaps it sez: sit down, have a cookie.
although I did try to be reasonable. For a given value of patience anyway
@rm-rf is www.google.com a valid address or is that browser/nameserver comfort?

@YvesKlett hmm... good question. I don't know :)

@rm-rf there used to be a time when you had to spell it out properly. I think that was on Mosaic for me.
perhaps some early Netscape as well.

Has anyone seen a good implementation of keyboard interactions in Mathematica? Like EventHandler only it will work on any graphics object and won't lose focus.

mind you, we had B/W CRTs then ;-P

3:11 PM
@YvesKlett Mine was with early Netscape... probably 3, I think

4:05 PM
This one I like:
"I demand yours help! " (from mathematica.stackexchange.com/q/34455/131)
reminds somewhat of "All your base are belong to us"
@rm-rf what is it with the enraged users today?
I feel not so mellow - lots of close votes today. Need to listen to some relaxing music, perhaps.

4:34 PM
@YvesKlett Hehe, he makes a typo in his code and is enraged that no one's helping him... lol

@rm-rf but I DEMANDS you help me!
without some smooth jazz I might have replied "demand my shorts!".

Work from home == no shorts

@rm-rf eugh... more information than I might have wished for :-)

@YvesKlett I'm sure they're just a non-native speaker and didn't mean it literally... it cracks me up, nevertheless.

@rm-rf yes, I know I am being mean. Today has seen its share of (sometimes double) exclamation marks.
I also did not link this: wiki.lspace.org/mediawiki/index.php/Multiple_exclamation_marks in one case of a triple sometime ago.

4:40 PM
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!‌!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@rm-rf should I feel bad for my quip and remove my utterings above?

not necessary at all... this is chat. Almost anything goes :)

anyway, I gotta head out now... will surely miss the bus otherwise
bye

@rm-rf be driven safely!

4:51 PM
@rm-rf calls for a new punctuation mark: the infinibang

3 hours later…
7:32 PM
@ssch Thanks! I added StationsNearest and ISDFetch to your ISDImport: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Wakebrdkid/…

I ponder what there is to tweet or blog from a conference where everything interesting would appear to be blanketed with NDAs... :-/

@MichaelHale Nice :)

7:52 PM
Something practical:
Finding the actual wind power at a location for a given period?
http://community.wolfram.com/groups/-/m/t/141357

@VitaliyKaurov Good thing you pointed out WeatherData gave "km/h" units, sneakily edited 5./18 into my code :)

@VitaliyKaurov That reminds me of a vizualization I made in January of the wind potential in sub-Saharan Africa: youtube.com/watch?v=3-SLOQt5wVs

r u the guy who posted there ? ;)
@ssch

@MichaelHale That in turn reminds me of this map I made when playing around with the linked questoin: i.imgur.com/ds71nFW.png the scale is dark = low power bright = high power
@VitaliyKaurov ye :P
Although world-scale was way too big to see anything interesting

8:35 PM
@belisarius. Thanks for the link to your Lindenmayer system post. Very nice piece of work.
@belisarius. I used Mathematica to build a Lindenmayer-TurleGraphics-D0L system interpreter back in 2001 after reading Prusinkiewicz & Lindenmayer, The Algorithmic Beauty of Plants. My algorithm works pretty much the same way yours does. I suppose that's only to be expected, because both need to accomplish the same task. Of course, my code is nowhere near as compact as yours, but then, compaction wasn't one of my goals.

9:35 PM
@m_goldberg "Compact" programs like that are a plain nightmare when you try to read them a year after the fact. They're good only for code-golf: goodreads.com/quotes/…

9:55 PM
Hmmm ... Stranger things have happened :D My M.SE pimped edit buttons disappeared ... I tried un- and then re-installing the extension - did not work out. Tried Chrome - not working. Now is the time for me to say that I use - SRWare Iron, which is based on the Chromium source. So, any suggestions ?

@NikolaDimitrov me too

@NikolaDimitrov @xslittlegrass Is the M.SE script the only one not working?

@NikolaDimitrov I use chrome and it disappeared today.
@ssch I'm not sure about other scripts since I only used one.
When I check the extension, it is still there

Maybe related to this? support.google.com/chrome_webstore/answer/… It only says latest version don't know if that is true or has said that a while

@ssch Yup, everything else works just fine :) And that happened three days ago, not today. Mine too, checked, and as I said I tried re-installing it and nothing
@ssch Well, I just updated my browser as I was using a version from 2012 if not 2011 and the editor is still missing .. .:D

10:04 PM
@NikolaDimitrov thanks for your answer on my Spectrogram question. Do you know what the partition length n and offset d means in the Spectrogram function?
@NikolaDimitrov I see in your answer you use the default value, while in rm-rf used customed values in his answer. Do you have a feeling about how to choose those parameters and how them effect the results?

Yup
And to spare
time I will give
you link to an @rm-rf post about those values

A: Computing and plotting a spectrogram in Mathematica

rm -rfThe following is a more detailed version of a Spectrogram implementation in Mathematica and is part of a larger package that I'm writing in my spare time. I've tried to keep the functionality and output structure similar to MATLAB's (but not entirely). The code is provided at the end of this answ...

Read it
it should answer your questions
:)
@xslittlegrass

yes, thanks for the link, I'm reading it now :)

superb :)
@ssch Well, there's a positive thing about updating your browser. Now M.SE chat notifications work just as expected ! :D

acl
10:38 PM
all, a quick question:

@xslittlegrass You can also look on SO/DSP for related posts... for instance, here's one about MATLAB's spectrogram, but should answer your question:
27
A: MATLAB 'spectrogram' params

yodaTo understand window functions & their use, let's first look at what happens when you take the DFT of finite length samples. Implicit in the definition of the discrete Fourier transform, is the assumption that the finite length of signal that you're considering, is periodic. Consider a sine wave...

@acl Hey, long time!

acl
@rm-rf hi!
I lurk
(that sounded ominous!)
OK, so: if I use PlotLegends, should BaseStyle->{FontSize->16} also affect the legends?

@acl Aha, no it doesn't...

acl
@rm-rf Great! :)
well, that'll teach me to use PlotLegends I guess

10
Q: How can I get LineLegend to pick up my plot's BaseStyle?

VerbeiaThe new legends functionality in version 9 really simplifies creating legends, and it automatically picks up the styles of the lines. Plot[{Sin[x], Cos[x]}, {x, 0, 5}, PlotStyle -> {Directive[AbsoluteThickness[3], Orange], Directive[AbsoluteThickness[3], Brown]}, PlotLegends -> LineLegend[...

acl
10:42 PM
@rm-rf aha! Thanks!
I didn't remember that question...
@rm-rf so how's it going?

Someone else in the conference here?

@acl Pretty great, actually... just defended a handful of days ago, so pretty relaxed right now :)

acl
@rm-rf Ah excellent, well done!
damn, time passes

Hehe
@acl Thanks1

acl
so, what now?
ah, time might pass, but PlotLegends will suck forever

10:47 PM
@acl Staying on for a little while as a post-doc. Several applications are due soon, so will move elsewhere depending on how things turn out

acl
@rm-rf cool. good luck

@acl This isn't the PlotLegends package though... it's now built-in and is significantly less sucky

acl
@rm-rf oh, it sucks
look
ContourPlot[
 Sin[x^2 + y^2],
 {x, -5, 5},
 {y, -5, 5},
 BaseStyle -> {FontSize -> 30},
 PlotLegends -> {
   BarLegend[],
   BaseStyle -> {FontSize -> 30}
   }
 ]

@MichaelHale very cool visual Michael ;)

acl
@rm-rf (well, I suck at this I guess, but I need to vent a bit)

10:49 PM
@ssch that's awesome that you posted about wind there - thanks!

@acl Hmm... strange. This works:
ContourPlot[Sin[x^2 + y^2], {x, -5, 5}, {y, -5, 5},
 BaseStyle -> {FontSize -> 30},
 PlotLegends ->
  BarLegend[{"LakeColors", {0, 1}}, LabelStyle -> {FontSize -> 30}]]

acl
@rm-rf Thanks, looks like BarLegend has a undocumented usage patterns (mine doesn't work because I randomly tried things...)

@acl It is actually documented :)

acl
@rm-rf BarLegend[cf,contours] I guess
well, I need to learn about this graphics stuff at some point...
I had no idea what this contour meant

@acl No, the second one: BarLegend[{cf, {min,max}}]

acl
10:55 PM
@rm-rf But my problem is the second argument you used

What second argument? It only has 1 argument and 1 option...

acl
@rm-rf Right, the option
ah!
Options[BarLegend]
well, I'm an idiot
PlotLegends still sucks though

Hehe

acl
@rm-rf OK thanks, I guess I'd have done this by hand had you not told me about this...

So I presume your actual plot has the right looking legend now?

acl
10:59 PM
@rm-rf yep
thanks
well, it's the wrong size at the moment but other than that...
@rm-rf so the plan it so stay on the west coast?

@acl Preferably... Snow == Ugh!.

@VitaliyKaurov Thanks! I made it in response to someone sending me the business plan for Cybernated Farm Systems (they are designing automated, aquaponic greenhouses powered by renewable energy to sell in developing countries) . I tied it into a series of posts I was doing about the main topic classifications for Wikipedia. facebook.com/notes/michael-hale/…

acl
11:23 PM
@rm-rf OK clearly I am now abusing your kindness, but:
ContourPlot[
 x^2 + y^2,
 {x, -5, 5},
 {y, -5, 5},
 BaseStyle -> {FontSize -> fontsize},
 AspectRatio -> 1,
 ColorFunction -> "BlueGreenYellow",
 PlotLegends -> {
   BarLegend[
    {"BlueGreenYellow", {0, 1}},
    LabelStyle -> {FontSize -> fontsize}
    ]
   }
 ]
any ideas how to control the height of the BarLegend?

11:41 PM
ContourPlot[x^2 + y^2, {x, -5, 5}, {y, -5, 5},
 BaseStyle -> {FontSize -> 15}, AspectRatio -> 1,
 ColorFunction -> "BlueGreenYellow", ImageSize -> {Automatic, 400},
 PlotLegends -> {BarLegend[{"BlueGreenYellow", {0, 1}},
    LabelStyle -> {FontSize -> 15}, ImageSize -> {Automatic, 400}]}]
@acl ^^ ImageSize works. If you set the same height for the original plot as well, you can align them well.

acl
@rm-rf thanks!

No problem

acl
You'd think I'd have learned to guess this sort of thing by now.

lol

acl
@rm-rf Well then, how does having a PhD feel?
not as big a deal as it's made out to be, is it...

11:44 PM
@acl Not at all... mostly relieved about being done with the univ paperwork bs
Gaah, almost ran into a library fine at the last min.

acl
@rm-rf yeah, I did things so last minute, I had to send a friend here to deposit a physical copy of my thesis for me
she sent a photo of the thing after she dropped it off :)

@acl I don't need to deposit a physical copy — it's electronic now. However, I did have to print out the entire thing one sided, so that some clerk can manually inspect EACH page!
She's been doing it for so long, that her wrists are in terrible shape and she wears a wrist brace and rubber fingers to avoid chafing

acl
@rm-rf oh sure, it was mostly electronic then too, but you did have to a) deposit a copy there, b) had to print it double-spaced so that notes can be made by the examiners! (who obviously just read the pdf anyway)
@rm-rf but what does she inspect it for?

@acl formatting... if the page number is exactly 0.5" above the edge, etc.

acl
@rm-rf that must be a very rewarding job

11:49 PM
@acl I offered to write a nice LaTeX template for them, as long as the univ blessed it and declared it the official one, but she refused because she'd lose her job then. At least she was honest...

acl
@rm-rf I guess her CV is going to be a tough sell
"expert in ensuring thesis uniformity on paper"

I don't think she cares about her CV... besides, people make up fancy titles for all kinds of jobs
@acl her official title is "Graduate School Advisor" :D

acl
heh

Ah, yes, the infamous thesis formatting woes. Especially bothersome in a science/math field when their strict formatting guidelines are designed for humanities fields.

acl
to be honest, I used 1.5 (instead of double) spacing and smaller fonts to get the thing under the page limit, and nobody noticed...

11:54 PM
@Zibadawa Heh, the funny thing is that the science/math folks use a latex template, and are 99% correct with the formatting. The humanities folks use MS Word and run into all sorts of problems
@acl There's a page limit for a thesis? That's the first time I've heard that!

acl
@rm-rf there was a word limit, and loosely people (ie, the dept secretary) looked at the length
anyway, nobody said anything in the end

Can anyone confirm this issue?
