10:00 PM
@acl Nice place

acl
@belisarius seems nice

@acl Świnoujscie is situated in the oceanic climate, which is characterized by mild winters and relatively cool summers

acl
it's mild for here I guess

On 12 March 1945 during World War II, refugee-crowded[1][2] Swinemünde suffered heavy destruction by the USAAF, an estimated 5,000[3]to 23,000[4] were killed, most of whom are buried on the Golm War Cemetery west of the town. The unfinished German aircraft carrier Graf Zeppelin was scuttled in the harbor in an attempt to prevent its capture by the advancing Red Army (it was nevertheless refloated by the Soviets later).

acl
@belisarius yes I'll see if I can find anything interesting to visit tomorrow
@belisarius let's see tomorrow, I just go here. must be nice

10:08 PM
@acl Seems a nice place to eat seafood

acl
@belisarius smoked salmon here is great, apparently
well, I just went for a walk to the beach. on the way I met a family of pigs wandering about

@acl Did they tell you anything?

acl
@belisarius they ran off
but a drunk pole told me lots of things, none of which i understood

@acl Sorry, context failure. I was referring to this book

I read that one. Trying to convince my kids they should read that too.
@belisarius are you in panama right now?

10:23 PM
@SjoerdCdeVries My kid enjoyed it a lot. mmmm, perhaps "enjoy" is a strange word for that book.
He liked it

How old is he?

@SjoerdCdeVries Nope I was consulting in Panama a few days ago
@SjoerdCdeVries 13

12 and 14 here. Same average.

@SjoerdCdeVries I was deeply impressed when I read it
And I was much older

I remember thumbing through it in a bookstore. I think I read the whole book there, like 200 pages or so, then bought it

acl
10:27 PM
@belisarius ah maus! I didn't even think of it! ha

@acl Your Polish pigs remind me of it. Of course!

acl
I don't think I've ever read it. pictures in books confuse me

@acl You should restrain your scientific self

acl
@belisarius no it's not that, I really get confused
well confused may not be the right word, I have to thunk between words and images and find it tiring
well one book can't hurt, I should read it

@acl It is really an eye opener
try it

acl
10:30 PM
@belisarius I know, so says the girflriend
I trust her on this. We have it in our library, so I should read it on general principle anyway

@acl yep

acl
we have two "comics", maus and logicomix and I've read neither

there are a few comics I enjoy

Logicomix: An Epic Search for Truth is a graphic novel about the foundational quest in mathematics, written by Apostolos Doxiadis, author of Uncle Petros and Goldbach's Conjecture, and theoretical computer scientist Christos Papadimitriou of the University of California, Berkeley. Character design and artwork are by Alecos Papadatos and color is by Annie Di Donna. The book was originally written in English, and was translated into Greek by author Apostolos Doxiadis for the release in Greece, which preceded the US and UK releases. Plot Set between the late 19th century and present-day, t...

Corto Maltese, for example

acl
10:32 PM
@SjoerdCdeVries that yes

@acl I was looking up that one before you wrote you owned it

I've read quite a few of them in a weekly comic bundle

Very nice artwork

It takes time appreciating them. They aren't as smooth as others I was reading at the time.

10:39 PM
@SjoerdCdeVries Hugo was a real innovator

My mother used to drop me off at the library once a week. I exchanged my usual four books and while she did her shoppings I killed some time reading the huge comic collection they had there. Sweet times.

@SjoerdCdeVries Nice. Libraries in the third world are depressing places.
@SjoerdCdeVries Nice. Libraries in the third world are depressing places.

@belisarius Third world?

The term Third World arose during the Cold War to define countries that remained non-aligned with either capitalism and NATO (which along with its allies represented the First World), or communism and the Soviet Union (which along with its allies represented the Second World). This definition provided a way of broadly categorizing the nations of the earth into three groups based on social, political, and economic divisions. Due to many of the Third World countries being extremely poor, it became a stereotype such that people commonly refer to undeveloped countries as "third world coun...

I know the term, but are you referring to Argentina as third world or so?

10:52 PM
@SjoerdCdeVries Absolutely

It's not that poor or undeveloped, is it?

Haha, nice moment to arrive

Hi @rojo

11:19 PM
@SjoerdCdeVries Hi there

@Rojo Discussion about comics derailed a bit.

@SjoerdCdeVries Haha

I have been in a lot of places but none in south America.

Planning to visit down here some time?

My wife doesn't like warm places, but we'll be in NY next week. It's hot there right now.
We're in Iceland now

11:29 PM
@SjoerdCdeVries Iceland? Buy a bank! They are cheap now

Yeah, I know. A former colleague of mine lost 150,000€ he deposited there.
Anyway, it was 15 deg C here, but the whole family got a sunburn today.

@SjoerdCdeVries You could also try to find your way to the center of the earth
Or have a conversation with Snorri Sturluson
many interesting things to do there with a sunburn

We were swimming in the thermal baths of the blue lagoon and didn't think we'd need sun screen at 66 deg north

11:46 PM
Something like that

@Verbeia Hi!

@Jin love, love, LOVE what you've done with the tiled background
Hi @belisarius
Kinda sad to say, I'll probably miss the launch party. I have another business trip this coming week and will be in meetings and planes during the fun.
