12:01 AM
@rm-rf did you have to add it to the path manually to get it to work?

@Szabolcs It returns False here too, but haven't played around much with v9

For 8 I didn't add it to the path
anyway, I really have to log off, I need to prepare for my lecture tomorrow, and I won't while I have thi sand Mma open
talk to you tomorrow!

bye

acl
12:44 AM
OK for some reason automatic completion of templates does not work here
if I evaluate eg test::usage = "test[x]" then, if I type te it does offer to complete to test; but then shift-cmd-K doesn't get me the template
does anybody else see this?

1:17 AM
@acl I don't get templates either (used to in v8)

acl
@rm-rf hm

2:10 AM
Oh today Mma is not good for my productivity, just can't stay away from it!
:D

acl
@Szabolcs do you get completion of the templates for your own functions?
like I describe above?

@acl I don't in 9. In 8 I do. Perhaps it's time for a question on how to extend 9 with new templates.

acl
@Szabolcs on OS X; I wonder if this also doesn't work in other OSs? It did in 8 here

@acl I'm also on OS X.

acl
yes I forgot. Well, that's a problem; I always end up with functions with 10 arguments...

2:21 AM
Have you checked out TableView?
@P.Fonseca
There's a TableViewBox ;)

acl
@Rojo ah yes, the undocumented TableView

Very very nice

acl
@Rojo do you get template completion for you own functions on windows? as I describe above?
seems it doesn't work for rm -rf, Szabolcs and myself on OS X

Let me check, I haven't been following the chat these last 6 hours

acl
just above, where I say "if I evaluate eg test::usage = "test[x]" then, if I type te it does offer to complete to test; but then shift-cmd-K doesn't get me the template"
cmd->ctrl in your case I guess
the template completion thing anyway

2:27 AM
I still haven't got a grasp of the new complete hotkeys and stuff
but
the good old ctrl k doesn't seem to even work on Plot
Ok, with shift it works
but not on your test function

acl
OK so it seems it's not just on osx

@acl probably the way to create them has changed, and we'll either discover it or force the Futz to tell us soon, I wouldn't worry
now, I had a page memory fault and blue screen of death that I had never till today got in my "dubious" W8, twice already
"win32k"
while I was using MMA8 and MMA9 at the same time... Now I'm jsut with MMA9 to see what happens
and saving my work! :P

@acl maybe you can ask a question :)

acl
Sjoerd also panicked his kernel twice today with mma
something with fonts apparently
@rm-rf yes maybe I will
how do I typeset ctrl?
[key:ctrl] something like that?
(I'm trying to ask a question, so I mean on the site)

<kbd>Ctrl</kbd>

acl
2:38 AM
thanks
@rm-rf done

3:03 AM
Do I get an award for showing first kernel crash of version 9?
Just after 20 minutes of use. was not doing anything special actually.

acl
@NasserM.Abbasi well, I crashed it once too, and @Sjoerd managed to crash his whole system, twice. so, your only claim to fame is actually posting a screenshot :)

@acl ok, will take that ;)

@NasserM.Abbasi @acl It seems all your wishes came true and you are now, officially, a beta-tester ;-) Congrats!

acl
@halirutan never wished to!
about my question: do you really get a template if you complete to xxyyzz and then press shift-ctrl-k?
here nothing happens

@acl You are on Linux?

acl
3:13 AM
@halirutan os x, I haven't installed v9 on linux yet

I think I found another bug in V9, but this existed in V8 also: according to folks on the math group, this integral should converge, but Mathematica 9 says no: Integrate[x/(1 + (x^6*Sin[x]^2)), {x, 0, Infinity}]

@acl Don't you have to use Cmd+Shift+K..

acl
@halirutan right, cmd, sorry for that

hmm
@NasserM.Abbasi, can you try the template expansion for a self-made function?

acl
so it does actually work for you? because szabolcs and rm also found it not to work on os x, and so did rojo on win8

3:16 AM
@acl Let me check again
@acl Ups, wrong version.
sorry
I had two windows open and must have mixed them up.

acl
ah I see. so it doesn't?

It seems not. It's definitely too late for me.. 4:17.. I need to sleep.
Otherwise more of this stuff happens

acl
@halirutan night :)

Thanks. Good night all.

@halirutan, It worked for me. windows 7. I typed in one cell foo[x_]:=Sin[x], then in a new and separate cell, I typed the letter f, nothing showed up yet, but when I typed the second letter, so now I have 'fo' on the screen, then I got a pull-up menu showing my function 'foo' to select. Is this what you mean?

acl
3:19 AM
@NasserM.Abbasi no, see the question; what you say does work, but the template doesn't apparently (for the arguments)

@NasserM.Abbasi Have you seen this here:
4
Q: Template completion

aclIn version 8, if one evaluates test::usage="test[x,y]"; then types test, then shift-cmd-k (or shift-ctrl-k), a template appears with placeholders for x and y. In version 9, this does not work: if I evaluate the same thing, when I type te, I am offered the choice to select test from the dropd...

@NasserM.Abbasi Copy and evaluate the test::usage line and then try to press Ctrl+Shift+K after you have typed test

@halirutan, you are right. When I click on the function name from the pull-up menu, nothing shows up and nothing happened

acl
@halirutan hm I am 100km to your east, so it's also 4:18 here...

@acl And your daughter wants to get up at 7:35 too and have a nice meal? :-)))

acl
@halirutan nope, my son gets up then though :)
(meals are not my strong point though so...)
I'll finish some cleanup of my code and be off to bed too

3:22 AM
@halirutan, I just did. Nothing happens. Same problem, you are right. windows 7

@acl OK, we discuss this meal thing later ;-) Night all
@NasserM.Abbasi Thanks for testing.

@acl I also had an issue with the fonts. Placeholders were f, etc. But it got fixed when I reinstalled and actually rebooted my pc as the installer asked after installation.
and, right after I was telling you that, blue screen of death again
Booted in W7, ran chkdsk, fixed all
booted in W8 again, and blue screen before I could do anything
My w7 is overloaded with stuff, working horribly... Now I-m in W8 running chkdsk again, with few hopes of a happy ending

acl
seems mathematica has a thing with fonts. v8 complains half the time I start up about something; support told me it has to do with fonts. but they all "pass validation" when I ask os x's "font book" to validate them
no idea what all this means of course
@Rojo is there some sort of font cache you could clear? I mean, where are fonts stored in windows?
are they cached somewhere and could that cache get corrupted?

@acl I got no idea. I'll ask google

@acl @Rojo I'm stepping in in the middle of a conversation but are you having issues with fonts not displaying correctly in M9? For example [ScriptCapitalD]?

acl
3:34 AM
no, here fonts display perfectly as far as I can tell, and nothing crashes

@AndyRoss I had issues and only noticed them with placeholders at first, but it got fixed by reinstalling and rebooting afterwards. I hadn't rebooted before
But I've had several issues already... I hope I can get it all working more or less without sudden errors. I really want to play with the random processes stuff

export to html still needs lots of work in Version 9. Cells with title and subtitle do not export correctly. See screen shot

There is no end of trouble with fonts if you inadvertently install M9 with M8 running. If that has happened you need to restart the system and probably re-install M9.

acl
@Rojo hmm yes that would have saved me a lot of work some years ago...

3:38 AM
The second image above is the HTML exported version
The first image above is the notebook
This makes it really hard to use Mathematica for making reports and export them to HTML. That is why I still use Latex and Latex2html

4:02 AM
@NasserM.Abbasi Works fine on a Mac 10.8.2. What are you using?

4:14 AM
Back, from my netbook
Sigh, why did this have to happen now
@AndyRoss Yes, I had installed it with M8 running
but reinstalling didn't fix either V8 or V9 until I rebooted
I was still getting a message in MMA8 however. Probably should reinstall it too
Anyway, nwo I have bigger issues. I can't even have my pc on for 5 minutes without a blue screen of death

acl
@Rojo do the logs say anything? windows has log files right? do they say anything just before the crash?

The message I get is page fault in non paged area. win32k. something

acl
@Rojo not very useful I guess

and it just now finished checking and "repairing" the disk, so let's see how long I last.
I won't disappear any more from here, netbook

acl
well, backups? how about reinstalling the whole thing and recovering from a backup? has the added advantage of being a pleasant way to spend the day

4:25 AM
GRRR, there, it died
OH
I just remembered I plugged in the wacom bamboo tablet... Perhapssss
Off you go

acl
sounds like you're going to be busy for the rest of the day :) (I laugh, but last week I spent 4 days trying to fix my girlfriend's macbook--no backups!)

Hehehe

acl
I just back everything up constantly. if something goes wrong on my machine, boot from recovery partition, clear the whole thing, install the OS, copy my stuff back from the backup and I'm done. all this is automatic so I just let it run
and it better run by itself for what apple charges for their computer of course

That's smart
I always say I am ging to do that too
but this time I didn't
The thing is, it's 1:28 AM and by 6 AM I need to invent an exercise for a test... So if I can't fix this more or less fast, I have to not sleep and leave it aside for tomorrow

acl
@Rojo well the trick is, I have a keyboard with USB connections at work. so I plug my macbook air there when I am at the office, and the keyboard is connected to a usb hard disk. so it backs up everything every hour and I don't need to do anything

4:31 AM
@Matariki, sorry was away. I am using version 9. Just a subtitle cell there. Then did SAVE AS and select html, that is all. WIndows 7

@acl after this, I think I'll learn from you

acl
@Rojo well you aren't going to fix it now, go to bed. you'll just waste your time getting angry. bitter experience :)

by the way, anyone else got happy about the new TableView? I didn't get to check the earlier chat and noone seems to have commented after I mentioned it

@NasserM.Abbasi I tried it with title, subtitle and some content using SystemInformation. Rest was as you did, worked fine. mmh

@Matariki Ok. Will put the notebook on my web site and give a link for you to try. need few minutes. thanks

4:33 AM
@acl can't go to sleep until I send an email with the exercise for the test
I'll do it from my laggy netbook

acl
@Rojo ah :)
well I'm practically rolling on the floor laughing... sorry :)
sometimes the universe conspires against you

It's ok, you deserve it
because you suffered yourself

acl
next thing you know, the electricity will go

SCHHT
The executable of the trial is exactly the same as the proper one, right?

acl
apparently yes

4:38 AM
@Matariki, Ok the notebook is here 12000.org/tmp/nov_28_2012 you'll see main.nb file. Again, using V9, opened the notebook, did SAVE AS and select HTML. Then looked at the generated main.html file. thanks for trying it. Note there are cells there that are closed.

@NasserM.Abbasi OK will report back shortly
This it what I see in Firefox
@NasserM.Abbasi Looks like it works here for me

@Matariki. Strange. On my system, I see this
@Matariki I do not know what is the difference. Are you on windows 7 also? see the same with chrom. So something is different between our systems. Using version 9.

@NasserM.Abbasi Definitely something wrong, I had a look at the HTML source and that looked clean
@NasserM.Abbasi Yes I am using M9 but on a Mac using Firefox

@Matariki, oh, I see. You are on a mac ! I am on windows. big difference :)
I think more folks at WRI use mac than windows.

@NasserM.Abbasi Guess so. I have loaded the page into Safary but it rendered fine there too. Which was expected as the source i fine
What is your source looking like
<p class='Subtitle' style='text-align: center;'>
Table showing number of symbols in each standard context in version 9 of Mathematica
</p>

4:51 AM
@Matariki I just put the HTML file here also 12000.org/tmp/nov_28_2012 you'll see a file called HTML.zip. If you could unzip it on your mac, it will create an HTML folder that includes the Mathematica generated HTML output. So you can see how it looks like on the mac. Thanks

@NasserM.Abbasi I had a look at the HTML source and in your one is a Mathematica command in there that should be there. I also saw that you are using the Student version of M9 there might be a bug in there. Could you restart you computer and create a new M9 file with some content and save as a HTML again and see what that looks like?
@NasserM.Abbasi That shouldn't be there I meant! darn typing
@NasserM.Abbasi If the problem is persistent we can write a short Mathematica script to rectify the html code for Subtitles

5:17 AM
@Matariki Do I have to restart my computer? isn't enough to restart Mathematica? Which I did many times. Yes, Student version, but I thought student version is same code base as standard version. thanks

@NasserM.Abbasi No, you don't have to restart the computer but that would eliminate any dirt that might be flying around in the running system.
I noticed that you have a main_V8.css file in the html folder which I don't have.

@Matariki, I do not know how main_v8.css got there. I had a version of main.nb called main_v8.nb, since I could not share the same notebook with V8 and V9 and I wanted to try with both versions. (V8 will not open a notebook created by V9 nicely). I'll remove all that stuff to different folders and see if that makes any difference

@NasserM.Abbasi Yep, that sound good
I am off now as I have to prepare dinner.

@Matariki it worked now! I guess the old HTML_LINKS folder was not cleaned up from version 8. When I deleted all those folder and tried again, now it worked well!
thanks for all your help!

@NasserM.Abbasi You're welcome! CU later

5:51 AM
@Rojo TableView seems to be very very experimental... the arrows don't work properly, the enter doesn't go down, and if you type something different than a number, it crashes Mathematica :). You can’t start it empty or with a vector. WR should drop the View part in the name. Something like TableManipulater should be more appropriate. There's no sort, filter, color, etc (the previous version seemed more advanced, but this is just a visual impression).
And in the way it's being done, I can't figure out how we could easily add "formulas" into it. Have to think about it...
(but it is nice to see the WR didn't dropped the idea)

@P.Fonseca Oh, sad... I lost my whole OS beore trying it properly. Now I am fighting to install it in W7 with the small issue that wolfram doesn't want to activate it for a second time
The previous version was a made up of 29478 other boxes. It couldn't handle more than only a small number of data

@Rojo The activation works only once. I recently installed M8 on a new machine and had to get Support to reset the activation. This took only a few hours though.
Bummer with your system going south

@Rojo oh man I get bsod as well when I try to change a font in a notebook that worked fine yesterday in V8 ... worst upgrade ever ...

Yes. I just mailed them. I don't discard the possibility of having further problems after that. I assume the support will behave properly

@Rojo So this one has probably a more advanced basis. But it is still very rough. It is still on the idea of showing the contents of a variable. So if you add a dynamic to the variable, you can manipulate it from inside, and access from outside. But you can't add a rule to a cell, or at least, not in an obvious way. Hope you get M9 back soon...

6:01 AM
has happend 3 times ... I am scared of opening the program at all at the moment

@P.Fonseca The feature that's lacking in my opinion is one of Dynamic
it should be able to track only parts of variables
I guess it will never work fine if all boxes showing parts of variables have to be updated every time a part gets changed. For big tables it's a big deal
Thanks for your good hopes

@Rojo Excel has some sort of dependency tracking to manage the updates.

@P.Fonseca To me, the ability to inspect big matrices or lists with a speadsheet like the one we have now is useful (assuming it works well with big lists)
Hope it gets better

@Rojo @P.Fonseca matlab has a nice matrix viewer actually. Here is a screen shot looking at a 1000 by 1000 matrix

@NasserM.Abbasi and it's a useful thing :)
My biggest problem with the new TableView is that it's in the new MMA9 that I can't use :)

6:17 AM
I like the new automatic highlighting of matching [] around expressions. I just think the color yellow is hard on the eyes. Will see if I can change that to different color.

Just 2 days ago I could have used the parametric ndsolve

meant to say 'greenish' color not 'yellow'.

It's ok
Floor[greenish] gives Yellow

@Rojo I agree that just viewing, simple editing, and eventually allowing some multi-selection and copy around would already be great (that is, a visual editor of List... is there some sort of graph way of extending it to multiple dimension spreadsheet... with a kind of mind maps exposure of the variable content...). So, how to link it all together with the individual dynamic content...
@Nasser it’s better than Mathematica has, but also very limited. Can you add it to you document content, two or three times... a la notebook way...?

@P.Fonseca If I recall, the tableview allows for multiple selection. Did you try copying and pasting in the notebook to see if it builds the submatrix?
and I thiiink you could also select entire rows and columns perhaps?

6:27 AM
@P.Fonseca, not sure I understand. Add what? The matrix viewer is just build into the Matlab interface to view data in the Matlab workspace. It is not something one can copy and paste. Matlab is not advanced in this respect like Mathematica is.

@Rojo No. After crashing Mathematica 3 or 4 times, I finally understood what it means experimental... Probably in another time when I’ll be less dependent of my M8 (your computer scenario scares me... where were those OS backups again...)
@NasserM.Abbasi I know. That was exactly my point ;-)

Hehe, you coward

my upgrade to V 9 went very smooth. Download .exe, double click. Activate, up and running :)

Mine too
Downloaded trial remotely, installed, font mess, crashes, lost W8, downloaded halfway again 3 times, compelte once again
reinstalled in W8 twice
Got corrupted
Was uninstalling when the OS crashed again
Installed in W7, coudln-t activate
Requested a home license, sent an email

@Rojo wow, that sound so bad even just reading it, you must be very frustrated now.

6:36 AM
Forgot to mention that MMA8 got corrputed by osmose in W8
but that-s not a problem since I can-t even use W8 now
Hehe

So I need a graph manipulator like in mind map apps, but with a punch of Minority Report, that zooms in on bi-dimensional data with a spreadsheet interface, or on Graphics, or on block diagram stuff, and then back again to global view. Can't figure out if this is a graph connecting notebook cells (so that the individual dynamic is already there), of if it takes everything from a variable... and is the block diagram interface based on the same stuff as the mind map...
@Rojo there’s a fine distance separating the coward from the rational...

@P.Fonseca and a big distance separating those two and me. I like my personal space
The irrational brave people
who don't do backups just for the adrenaline of it

@Rojo it's incredible how our brain can build excuses.

@P.Fonseca I'm not to blame for what my brain does

7:09 AM
but if it's good I deserve the merit

7:24 AM
Oh, come on. I installed MMA9 in W7, MM8 wasn't open, didn't even activate, and the piecewise character isn't working now in MM8? Sigh

7:44 AM
guys TableView is still not a documented official function right? ...I have not got 9 yet but there is no reference to it in the docs

@MikeHoneychurch No, there is no entry in the documentation center of M9

I was told that no changes had been made since 8 but from above it appears to be behaving quite differently??

Haven't tried it myself yet
I always wanted to have something like it but TableView wasn't/isn't working in a way that it is useful to me

8:29 AM
Interesting: a failed evaluation has leaked into the what's-new-in-9 documentation: wolfram.com/xid/0bimyy84-dwbh3u

8:55 AM
@Matariki I agree. But can you describe what would be useful to you?

1 hour later…
10:02 AM
another V9 crash. My second of the day. I am on a roll!
I only lost 1/2 hr work this time. I forgot to save all the time.

2 hours later…
11:36 AM
@P.Fonseca & @Matariki what are you looking for in Table/Grid functionality. I have been working on making some useful tables and would be happy to collaborate. see video here: ibnhconsulting.blogspot.com.au/2012/11/dynamic-grids.html for nested lists. I have another version that sorts columns etc.

11:50 AM
@MikeHoneychurch Looks good

Could somebody give some love to this question (of mine):
9
Q: Tell ParalleMap[] to use just specific kernels

AjasjaIs there a way to tell ParallelMap to use just some specific kernels (as is possible for ParallelEvaluate)? Background: I have 6 local and 16 remote kernels. During some analysis I call ParalleMap twice. One ParallelMap is quicker using all the kernels, but one is actually slower (probably bandw...

In particular I would like to know why
num = 10;
list = Range[num];
function = Labeled[Framed[#], $KernelID] &;
ParallelMap[function, list]
aKer = Kernels[];
Block[{Parallel`Protected`$kernels = aKer[[{2, 3}]]},
   ParallelMap[function, list]
]
does not work as expected.

@MikeHoneychurch What I'm looking for is for the possibility of using it as in Excel. Since everybody hates Excel, I'll add that what I want is a visual manipulation of the data. Sometimes it is much more intuitive to copy expressions between "cells", than to programmatically work with Part. And the same applies to creating rules for the values of the “cells” (pointing to others, etc).
Obviously, some kind of protection should avoid the expression from returning Graphic to within a cell (or maybe not...).

@Ajasja, I tried your code. I do not know what to look for, since never used parallel stuff. But this is the output on V9

Out[121] should have only 1 and 2 (only the first two kernel IDs)

12:08 PM
@Ajasja I just didn't had time to trace this myself carefully. Question, what exactly do you understand of automatic load balancing in this case?

Oops sorry, only 2 and 3 (the second and third kernel IDs)
The one allready implemented by ParallelMap
Or an alternative that would support both Coarse and fine grained load balancing.

Yes, the question is, what balancing does ParallelMap? It obviously cannot even guess, that your remove kernels are slower and give them less work.

Yes, that is true.
I'm also really at a loss as why overriding Parallel`Protected`$kernels inside Block does not work...

And IMO for the most cases an adjustment of the grain does not gain so much speed.
@Ajasja Obvious answers: because the $kernels variable is not used like we think it is used ;-) But yes, it looks very much like this should work.

@P.Fonseca so far I haven't wanted (or needed) to go down that path. I have focussed on display features thus far.

12:15 PM
@halirutan Hmm, could be. Will have to run some more benchmarks. I remember that enabling ssh compression gave a modest 5%-10% improvement.

@P.Fonseca I know other programs (MathCAD, Maple etc.) have "spreadsheets" built in (embedded into the worksheet). I've seen the mathcad one demoed to me recently and it was pretty good. But I think these are basically display tools as well. AFAIK they do not act like Excel.

@Ajasja Do you know whether Mathematica makes a different chunking in ParallelMap when you change only the function you map?
@acl I must have really been too tired yesterday. It works exactly like I described it.

acl
@halirutan under linux?

@halirutan Don't know what you mean exactly.

@acl Yes.

acl
12:21 PM
I see. It definitely does not work on OS X here (and others found it did not work on os x either)
@Ajasja could you try this when you have time and see if it works for you?

@Ajasja The Corsegrained and Finegrained stuff must be (in automatic mode) decided by (1) the data you give or (2) the function you use for mapping.

acl
@Rojo also could not get it to work I think (then mma killed his computer so I guess he has other problems now)
@Rojo but how is it even possible for a user program to kill your OS?

@acl Ctrl + K expand just the function name. Ctrl + Shift + K give me the whole template form xx mma8 win7

acl
@Ajasja OK yes, the problem is with mma 9
I thought you were using that; sorry

@acl not yet. Installing now:) Will have to restart soon

acl
12:25 PM
@Ajasja why?
oh windows OK. Well, if you could try this it would be useful

OK will get back to you

acl
@Ajasja thanks. (did you backup? did you see what happened to rojo? strange)
well I guess if you never appear again we know what happened :)

Hehe:=) I backed up only my mathpass file
Will just have to hope for the best or restore programs from a two week old backup

12:40 PM
This is NOT a good day.
Geting BSOD all over the place!
(on a different comp now)

acl
oh

@MikeHoneychurch making it act like Excel doesn't seem to hard. But knowing Dynamic functions, it seems to me that it would be better to have it completely integrated into the FE

12:57 PM
@Rojo Did reinstalling mma9 help with the BSODs?
Im only 90% sure I had mma8 closed when installing mma9...
(Perhaps it was hiding on one of my 12 virtual desktops)

why does Mathematica code has all different strange colors when posted at stackoverflow? it seems random colors for different part of the code
It makes it hard to read the code.

acl
ok so suppose I want to play with one of the featured examples, eg this. How do I download it?

Who have tried to install RLink on Linux? I'm getting `InstallR::fail :
Failed to install R. The following error was encountered :
Unable to load dynamic libraries` after evaluating `InstallR[]`.

1:18 PM
any one knows how to turn-off mathematica 9 input assistant and all these things that keep poping up as I write? I'd like to use CTRL-K as in version 8 for command completion. I find these very annoying

@NasserM.Abbasi Edit -> Preferences -> Interface. It's all there I believe.

@swish, thanks. I got it. I was searching inside the options inspector for "assistant"

1:56 PM
@NasserM.Abbasi I found this all annoying at first as well. I recommend at least keeping the command completion part on. Once you get used to not using CTRL-K and instead using the popup you will wonder how you ever got along without it.

acl
@AndyRoss Does template completion with shift-ctrl-k, for your own functions with usage message work for you (like it did for v8)?
(and I agree about leaving automatic completion on, it's really nice)

@AndyRoss, yes, I need CTRL-K ofcourse. I just do not like the pop-up windows. Very distracting. It stays there for 5 seconds, and when it goes the screen changes on me. I am old fashioned, do not like too many bells and whistles when I write code :) do not like the template completion also. Do not need any of these things.

acl
@AndyRoss I guess you're on windows, that is why I am asking

2:17 PM
Hmm I found a useful link regarding the BSOD. sevenforums.com/crashes-debugging/…
Now I just have to find the offending font

@acl yes I'm on windows. @NasserM.Abbasi For my part even the code completion was terribly annoying at first but I endeavored to keep at for a couple of days. I'm really glad I did, its really sped up my workflow.
@acl Oh, I missed the real question you were asking. No, the template stuff seems to not work/ work differently than it used to. I never really used this since I try to avoid using the mouse whenever possible though.

acl
@AndyRoss I mean: define fred::usage="fred[x,y]", then type fred and shift-ctrl-k. on v8 this gave the argument template, ie it gave me fred[x,y] and let me fill in the arguments and navigate between them with tab. this does not work now here; I can't get it to show me the arguments
no mousing involved at all!

@acl hmm.. as a matter of fact, when I type fred[ and then shift-ctrl-k it removes the "[" I had just typed. Seems like something is possibly broken there?

acl
Apparently it works OK on linux (@halirutan tested it and it works)

@acl well I take that as a sign that the change probably wasn't intended then but I don't really know. @ArnoudBuzing I have little to do with the FE is there anything official to say on this?

2:32 PM
@MikeHoneychurch No, TableView is not a documented/supported function in Mathematica 9.
@Ajasja It did help Sjoerd yesterday, who was running V8 while installing V9.

2:52 PM
@ArnoudBuzing I removed mma9 and reinstalled mma8. Now it seems everything is working again.

@Ajasja OK, thanks for the update. I apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused you.

@ArnoudBuzing No problem. I'll try reinstalling mma9 later when I have more time. Can't wait to try it, but have more pressing work.

@IstvánZachar This was a web issue and has been addressed. Thanks for reporting it. There are a few more places where this happens (for example Arrow). These web issues will all be addressed as well.

acl
@Arnoud is it possible to obtain the featured examples as notebooks? I only see the web (inert) versions
@ArnoudBuzing what @rm -rf describes here happens also to me, with a home license. I get no crashes, but v8 starts up in trial mode (complete with banners etc). If I comment out a line in my mathpass file, v8 works fine.
launching a kernel from the command line also requires activation (if I do not comment out the line)

3:35 PM
@AndyRoss It puts the bracket back if you escape out of the popup.

@BrettChampion I don't get a popup hitting shift+ctrl+k.

acl
@BrettChampion there's no popup here at all

@AndyRoss It'll put the bracket back, once you figure out how to get the popup to escape out of. :-)

4:14 PM
@ArnoudBuzing Thanks for the feedback!

4:39 PM
@acl I think you need to click on each input one by one to bring up a plain text version and copy them
@acl didn't you answer a question about an Ito process one? Time for an updated answer?

@NasserM.Abbasi Can you kindly report this to support@wolfram.com (and ideally copy arnoudb@wolfram.com)? I talked to the developer about this, who wants to know the version of Windows and any non-standard proxy settings or firewall settings you may be using.

5:12 PM
ThreadDepth is a really nice option... Unfortunately, it's available only for Quantity. Would've been nice to have it for other functions

@rm-rf What's your favourite find in M9 so far?

not really a "find", but I do like that they've introduced signal processing functions. It doesn't go all the way as MATLAB's toolbox, but nevertheless, a good start

@Szabolcs The template expansion bug seems to appear in OSX and Windows. In Linux it doesn't work correctly, but it works.

So is their a solution for the bsod with fonts? I have mathematica 9 on two computers, I have done clean installs (first removing v8 and all App directory folders) and I can consistently get a bsod on both machines if I try to use the "Font..." button in the Writting assistant palette ... makes me sad
wait ... people getting the bsod did you install the mathematica fonts into your system font folder? I did this for ease of use with Illustrator ... need to remove them see if that fixes the issue ...

5:30 PM
@Gabriel Please contact support (wolfram.com/support/contact). Reinstalling V9 (with no other Mathematica version running) should resolve the issue.

@ArnoudBuzing I have contacted support ... just hoping for a solution sooner. I did a fresh reinstall it is still an issue. All I can think of is the left over fonts in the system directory ... as even opening that folder bsod me now ... might have to reinstall windows :-(
as for the urgency sadly I had a project I should have finished before upgrading ... to excited ... now I have no working Mathematica ... early adopters curse I guess

5:47 PM
@Ajasja Nothing helped

@Rojo Rojo, Gabriel, Technical Support will reach out to you to help address this issue. Let me know (arnoudb@wolfram.com) if you do not hear from them.

@ArnoudBuzing thanks so much
I have made some progress on my own
using the link as a guide from @Ajasja I stopped the font directory in windows from crashing by deleting the Mathematica* fonts ... I had to use powershell to do this as opening the folder in explorer lead to a bsod
about to test the "Font..." button ... so scared

Q: Search tips needed?

cormullionUsing the SE search tool I searched for 'wavelets', and got one set of questions, then I searched for 'wavelet' and got an overlapping set. Then I searched for 'wavelet*' and got another set. I didn't realise that searching was precise enough to distinguish between singulars and plurals, or that ...

@Rojo Sorry to hear that. I seem to be OK now (I believe the trick was reinstalling mma8, which overwrote the fonts files).
@Gabriel Yup, that probably happens often:)

@Ajasja I didn't try touching MMA8 yet

Perhaps you should give it a go?

ugh not my day ... my phone battery kicks out during the support call ...
@ArnoudBuzing thanks for the quick response though! Wolfram is becoming more beloved every day for me :-)
@Ajasja so does MMA9 work as well for you now? Or just MMA8?

I don't have mma9 installed.

6:13 PM
ah thanks

Sorry got to go.
bye all

6:48 PM
I have crashed M9 three times today (it simply closes without warning), all this while navigating on the documentation center first page (opening chapters, or choosing one of the themes). Any experiences like this one?
